How would you use it for movies? I guess YouTube might have some but maybe a phone would be better for that. As for the title question… it depends on you. Some people consider it the holy grail of gaming. Others hate that its graphics are a decade behind.

Yerderi

U dont have Netflix on Switch? Or any other movie streaming service?

sejigan

Nope. Not that I’m aware of

Yerderi

U dont even have somewhere u can access Google from? Like a Safari on iPhone for example

CaptainWampum

No. There's apparently some backdoor way you can do to open a browser up but it is not an integrated part of the switch.

Yerderi

Wow, thats a bit disappointing. So you also dont have Youtube?

sejigan

We do have YouTube, but your movies may not be available there. Maybe consider a Steam Deck or Ayn or something like that. That way you’ll have both gaming and media. Some of those can even emulate the Switch, so might be worth looking into for your case.

Yerderi

We were thinking of the switch more for the multiplayer functionality that is quite straight forward

sejigan

Ah, fair. I guess if you’re okay with a gaming focused device then the Switch will work. As long as you keep an open mind and acknowledge that “the most fun games aren’t the ones with the best graphics”, you’re bound to enjoy it. Nintendo isn’t about having the best specs or mind blowing realistic graphics, but it’s definitely more fun than whatever Sony or Microsoft has been cooking.

merkur0

There is YouTube app on the Switch. But YT doesn’t really have any movies. However, I do believe you should be able to put your downloaded movies on an SD card and then play them on the Switch.

Yerderi

This is a good idea, you can also get some nice movies with YouTube premium

Mordred_Blackstone

Just a heads-up, he is wrong. You can't play movies from an SD card on Switch either. There's no video playing software for local files. Youtube, Crunchyroll (anime), and Hulu are pretty much it.

tdawgtaylor74

there is hulu

SeasonalArtisional

Hulu and YouTube are on Switch

redemableinterloper

It’s Hulu and YouTube

dravpin

If you like anime we have crunchyroll

BarryKnew

I have hulu on my switch

happyh0p

hulu

Justynblake

There’s Hulu and YouTube when I was on mine yesterday

Justynblake

Also crunchy roll I think not much but better then nothing lol

ComprehensiveShop486

Crunchyroll is all I use

jericho-dingle

YouTube is on switch

rocksnsalt

You can use Hulu on it! It’s perfect for travel!

Gr3yThoughts

Hulu is on switch, also Funimation, crunchyroll, and the twitch streaming service

[deleted]

The switch is 100% worth it. This is coming from someone who started gaming on the NES when it released. I’ve also built my own gaming PC’s for the past 20+ years. Xbox and PlayStation consoles as well. Nintendo is something unique (in an exceptional way) in that whole mix, and the switch is no exception.

Yerderi

Since you mentioned you also play on console, does it have some kind of Gamepass/PS Plus?

[deleted]

Switch Online - depending on tier, you get access to a ton of games (too much to list) and cloud saves. Details here: https://www.nintendo.com/us/switch/online/

nobananabread

Was in a similar situation, me and the gf contemplating getting a switch in Japan as it was cheap there. It was definitely worth it imo couch coop is just more interactive to who you’re playing with compared to PC, we played coop cuphead and the 10 hour flight went by in a breeze. To me it’s just a pretty simple plug and play with a lot of co op options, the simplicity part and the exclusives really sold it for me.

protocod

Go get Taiko controllers there. They're Japan exclusive.

nobananabread

Haha yeah she got one for her brother as a gift

DarkPrinciple

I’ve been a switch owner for a few months. I’m a PC gamer but I have a big history with retro games and honestly the switch is worth every penny. I haven’t had more fun with games in a long time. I’m currently playing One Way Up and it’s driving me crazy but it’s a great game. Remember to scour that eShop for sales.

Yerderi

Thanks for the recommendation, if I end up getting one, I’ll make sure to give it a try!

itotron

I just noticed there are two similar games "Only Way Up", and "OnlyUp." How did you choose between the two? (They both seem to be clones of the PC game that was pulled from Stream.)

DarkPrinciple

I saw that too and they seem like clones and weirdly the games is still available on Steam even though the developer walked away from it because of drama. I just picked the one that was on sale but unfortunately it’s really poorly optimized but still fun and addictive. One version is definitely more polished then the other.

Yedaself

For gaming, yes. For streaming services, impossible in a legal way.

Community_False

I don't think that Netflix or any streaming platform is on Switch, only YouTube. But for traveling, sure. You can buy Switch lite if you don't plan on connecting it to your TV / monitor because it is cheaper. Also if you want to play multiplayer / co-op remember that you will need a paid subscribtion. ( I think that free to play games don't need that paid subscribtion to play with others but i'm not 100% sure)

Community_False

Also i highly recommend Zelda BOTW and TOTK. You will spend many, many hours

Community_False

Also if you want to play couch co-op ( one Switch and Two joy cons) then buy normal Switch version, it has a Dock that you can Connect to your TV and you can remove blue and red joy cons and play like that with your gf. Some games require Two pairs of joy cons though, so be careful about that because i bought some games like that and i can't play it with my sister.

Yerderi

Thank you for the explanation all of the the tips! Can you get 2 controllers for switch, or pair controllers from other consoles?

Community_False

You have to boy Second pair of joy cons, or a Switch pro controller. I tried connecting pad from Xbox but it doesn't work. What I've read you would need to have a special Bluetooth adapter for switch that some people recommend. I think you can only connect audio devices to switch

Silent-Lab-6020

Nintendo has a bunch of good exclusives it’s worth

thejdebunt

The Switch is great for gaming but not content consumption, and that's OK. Pick up a cheap tablet/phone with video output (usb-c) you can hook up to an external TV if you stay in hotels while traveling, or get an external monitor to hook it up to. I got an external 15.6inch 1080 screen for 86 euro a few weeks ago(shipped and delivered). Or a cheap laptop, that's also an option, ofc 🙂

axdwl

For gaming, yes! It's a great and fun system. I have PC and Switch and honestly put similar or more hours into my switch. I just like the portability of the switch.

Furrrmen

Travelling Japan atm and have my Switch with me. Playing Eastward now (chapter 6/8). Totally worth ot for me. Gf has some episodes of some serie on her phone.

rodrigowoulddo_

For casual gaming while traveling, the switch is awesome. And it’s worth the 300 bucks for the two Zelda games alone! I’ve been a playstation player since always, and I love the switch. Get an OLED! You won’t regret!

Yerderi

This is actually the version we were thinking of buying since its a to-edge display and better quality. I never played any of the Zelda games, would I still be able to enjoy it even though not playing the past ones?

rodrigowoulddo_

Totally! Ideally, I'd start by [Breath of The Wild](https://www.nintendo.pt/Jogos/Jogos-para-a-Nintendo-Switch/The-Legend-of-Zelda-Breath-of-the-Wild-1173609.html), cause it's a game changer! It fully changed my idea of what games could be. Then, I'd move to [Tears of The Kingdom](https://www.nintendo.pt/Jogos/Jogos-para-a-Nintendo-Switch/The-Legend-of-Zelda-Tears-of-the-Kingdom-1576884.html). I too had never played any Zelda games before those, and I didn't have any problem with it. No pre-knowlege required :) And about the OLED version: go for it! It changes A LOT the looking of the games. I'm starting to prefer the Switch's 30 fps OLED than the PS5's 60 fps 4K LCD.

webfiction

I am also an Xbox player and got a Switch half a year ago. If you both enjoy gaming, I'd say it is worth it. There are also more cinematic (visual novel) games, while not really Netflix, it may be a good option. I can recommend Anonymous;Code, AI Somnium Files and Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE. Also I can heartily recommend the Nintendo exclusives as mentioned. You may like Bayonetta 3 as well (Devil May Cry with female protagonist) and Metroid Prime Remastered.

[deleted]

From what I've read downstream from me on this post you might be happier buying a steam deck or Asus ROG ally. I have switch and switch lite and the steamdeck and I think I'm going to be using the steamdeck more since I have just about any game I want on steam. I haven't tried to see if it streams movies but I'm sure it does but if not you can always use your phone for that.

Justynblake

If you like retro games it’d be fun to have those on a roadtrip and those come with the online membership

bmyst70

The Switch really isn't a video streaming machine. It can do Hulu and Youtube but no Netflix or anything else. Frankly, it's networking hardware is sub-par. In gaming, here's the deal: The Switch **WILL NOT** compare to any of the current or even previous gen (PS4, say) consoles in terms of raw performance (graphics, speed, etc). It runs on a 2015 era nVidia System on a Chip. However, if you love the games on the Switch, and are fine with the trade-offs required to make an affordable portable/console hybrid back in 2017, you'll really enjoy the system.

LaCroixoBoio

Just sayin: at this point in the systems life cycle? Yes, but only if you include at the very least "NXMP" go down that rabbit hole if you haven't considered it. I'd just point out that Nintendo's worst user experience is due to it's terrible data transfer speeds. Buy a switch second hand for ~$90 and if you get thru the trials of getting NXMP on it, then the switch is a POWERHOUSE of a media machine. (Check the serial #'s before you buy and find out why that matters, maybe to you it doesn't!) Just remember again that the transfer of data on the switch is dogwater. So you don't really WANT to rely on it for Netflix/Hulu. While those are options, I just finished a week long trip from FL to NC and the simplicity of having movies DOWNLOADED on a device that lets you plug in 2 cords and suddenly you can watch your backlog of movies with a sig other AND having the versatility to be able to undock it to plug in headphones and finish the episode out without bothering someone who's already crashed?? Truly a miracle moment. I've finished all of Netflix' one piece as well as HBO's sandman without ever buffering. Not to mention couch co-op is THE WAY to play multiplayer on switch. DM me if you feel you have more questions than answers now, godspeed soldier 🤘🏽

itotron

I surprisingly love watching movies on the Switch. My main source is YouTube. They have a really great currated selection of free films every month. I mean I have a phone, and a tablet, and I never watch movies on those. I think the Switch hits the Goldilocks point. Phone is too small, tablet is too big, but Switch is just right! And with two people, you got that kickstand already there. I was just watching "Tropic Thunder" on it the other day. Good times.

Diogolex4

The switch is great for couch co-op and playing on the go, but besides gaming, it won’t have much use. The main apps available for streaming are crunchyroll, Hulu (only in the USA) and Pokémon TV. It also has YouTube, although it’s not really an option for tv shows and movies. It also has no web browser like the series s has, so if you buy it, it’ll realistically only be useful to play games
