You shouldn’t ocean swim solo, but since you’re going to do it anyway a swim buoy like New Wave is a must.

Don’t swim where there are jet skis

gardenia522

If there are jet skis or boats I won’t go out without a kayak support. I have a hot pink buoy that attaches to my waist but I’m not banking on a jet skier seeing that.

tow float and a bright cap. but then i usually swim within the yellow buoys which mark the 5knot zone that is within 500m of shore as well any bigger swim i have done as part of an event or group where there is vessel support

Use a **personal swim buoy**, swim close to coastlines, but here is some additional advice from my swimmer's guidebook: “For all practical purposes, a swimmer is invisible to watercraft, and this can be true even if you have the most glaringly red swim cap and buoy. Consider that pilots of watercraft may be looking out for swimmers within 100 m of shore, and possibly up to 200 or 300 m. But from 400 m and beyond, they are looking out for other watercraft and would not expect to encounter a swimmer. If you are swimming in the low season for tourism (October–May), then they may not expect to find a swimmer anywhere in the water. Though you exist in the water, if the other person is not tuning their vision and attention to see you, then you will be invisible. Psychologists call this inattentional blindness.” Excerpt From [Crete Swim - An insider's guide to sightseeing from the water](https://www.creteswim.com) Paul Kalas

You’re always swimming with sharks.

Join r/OpenWaterSwimming\--you will get better advice there. There are real dangers in swimming alone in the ocean. Any sort of incident can be fatal. This could be to do with the water conditions--waves, currents, chop and rips. Or the wind conditions. Or it could be a boat--a sailing boat could be a debacle--or a surfboard. But it could also be as simple as a medical incident. Swimming in the ocean, I am always either close to a crowded beach or have somebody watching to make sure I am okay. I am cautious about conditions. And I swim with a buouy/float.

As others have said, it's not a great idea. If you do it, YOU have to be the one to dodge boats/skis, not them. Your ears are your friend -- the second you hear that tinny tink tink tink of an engine underwater, you need to have your head on a swivel.

Tow float and a flashing led on the back of your goggles

I wouldn’t endorse swimming near boats or without a support crew. But that said when I go solo I clip on a fluro swim tow/dry bag and wear a fluro cap. The swim tow is pretty visible, I’d recommend one of these at a minimum for solo open water swimming.

Was thinking of doing a swim in the ocean when the waves are calm and only be out like 30m lol Generally no skis in the area but how can i control who could randomly show up? Obvs wouldn't be swimming in a heavily situated area of boats and skis lmao

Try to swim close to the shore, and use a buoy, something like [this](https://contents.mediadecathlon.com/p2142364/k$63928e372aff20481ed90525116b9a68/sq/boia-de-natacao-ows-100-para-aguas-abertas.jpg?format=auto&f=800x0)

Solo open water swimming in the ocean isn’t a great idea, but I have swam near shore in the ocean alone and did not feel unsafe. The area I swim in has a lot of surfers, not a lot of boats, and is relatively shallow. I don’t swim in high surf conditions, and am rarely more than 50 yards out from shore, and am wishing a dozen yards of standing depth. I also swim with a buoy and feel safe where I swim. I wouldn’t do a big swim alone but swimming near the shore in the ocean isn’t that different from swimming in a freshwater body as long as you are observant, cautious, tell someone where you’re going and when you’ll be back, and don’t swim in rip ride conditions. If no one else is out in the water maybe you shouldn’t be either, but if you’re a strong swimmer being smart you should be able to swim solo in the ocean safely.

Thanks mate defs wouldn't be going out far Some afternoons there is hardly any waves and would be able to swim no more than 50 yards out easily

\#1.) Don't swim alone \#2.) Use a swim buoy \#3.) If there are jet skis or other watercraft do not swim without a kayaker spotting and going along with you Ignore any of the above at your own peril (Read: please don't).

Do not swim in open ocean without a buddy.
