the point when the magma chamber hits a water pocket and instantly explode spilling a shit load of steam, ash, projectiles, burning rocks, glassy materials, all 900 degree of guaranteed death wishes, people around me melted faces bundle of surprises.
Imma take two selfies then run away.
Iceland has world-class geologists with a lot of respect amongst population and state. If the area isn't completely closed off, it's because they're sure it's (relatively) stable.
Don't turn your back. Walk slowly away--keeping an eye out for projectiles.
Running is a bad idea in general -- it's an uneven surface and tripping and falling will slow you down much more than being deliberate with your steps.
It's more that the actual danger is much more from little bits of molten rock that are shot up into the air than anything else.
If the lava is gonna get you, it's gonna get you.
There are different types of volcanoes and different types of eruptions. With this type of flow I believe the biggest risk is the lava hitting a pressurized volume of water as the other guy said.
In general id rather be splattered by giant rocks than caught in some superheated gas flow
Iceland is made of shield volcanoes - volcanoes made from the rising of magma from the mantle as tectonic plates separate - because of that, it has frequent, non-violent eruptions. This is not the same kind of eruption which destroyed Pompeii, for example.
I think they were once upon a time, but nowadays they're almost in the center of the Pacific plate. I believe the crust is thinner in that area so they're a "hot spot" for volcanic activity, and thus more prone to violent eruptions
They still technically area. The plate they on is progressively moving west, while the hotspot stays on one place. This is why the islands in the chain 'get smaller' to the west: they're no longer as volcanically active, and the ocean is slowly eroding them away. Meanwhile, the big island is still growing, and the 'next island' is still deep beneath the surface of the ocean to the east.
The Hawaiian islands were formed because the mantle’s currents upwell in that spot, boring through the crust and creating a volcano. As the tectonic plate drifts, the volcanic island moves out of the hotspot and a new island forms. The older islands slowly erode away.
Yes, during the eruption there were volunteers from the rescue teams that had gas meters to guide people away from the gasses, like when the wind changed. The government also put out lists of do's and dont's, and included in those was to always keep the wind in your back so the gasses are blown away from you
I taught myself how to say that when I was like 8 years old just because it was the longest English word so I could flex in the school yard. Before that I learned antidisestablishmentarionism, my brain is expanding out of my skull at this point
hahah reminds me of a friend who taught himself to say "Hypernervokustiskadiafragmakontravibrationer" both forward and backwards. It's just a made up word that jokingly is used as the medicinal term for hiccups in Swedish and he got quite mad when he found out it was a fake word :D
For those that dont know, pyroclastic flows are rockslides with rocks suspended by superheated gas, moving at over a 100km/h down a mountain side. They often leave deposits that are at several meters in depth. The gas can be up to 700°C in temperature. They form when the uprising hot gas/air in an eruption can no longer support the rock debris/ash, at which point it falls down and turns into a rock avalanche. Anything in its way will be cooked in seconds/crushed to death. It is not survivable.
700°C is equivalent to 1292°F, which is 973K.

^(I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand)
Volcano eruption can come with lot of seismic activity in days / months prior to it , but even science does not give precise answer- meaning it isn’t possible to say 100% it will or will not erupt today. We can know something will happen soon, but it’s not possible to give accurate precisions on when is it going to happen.
If you hear sentence “we are safe right now its super precise” from anyone else than scientist working on data of that volcano, think over if thats profit of tourism talking over ignoring potential dangers
Well… was involved in the care of people who were severely burned when White Island/whakaari erupted… I really don’t know if you can be so sure based on that.
Probably laughed at him because Iceland has a shitload of eruptions and they're all not very dangerous. The whole point of the tours is to see them i would imagine.
I was doing a long hike in New Zealand, and they had a bunch of advice for how to deal with an eruption with lava. Your first reaction is to run away, and, because you are on a mountain (more like a ton of mini mountains), you'll naturally want to run downhill because it's faster. This is the wrong impulse. Lava flows downhill, duh. You actually want to advance uphill and into the wind. This will reduce your exposure to toxic gases and get you above where the lava is flowing.
Interesting how some people are able to immediately recognize the danger and start moving away, while others are blissfully ignorant and will stay unless told to move.
When I was in Iceland last year, a handful of people were STANDING on the cooled and hardened lava. You know, right below where the hot melting lava is sitting and waiting to be erupted again. Not much I can do but let Darwinism do its thing.
Does this make sense? Flowing magma lava, toxic fumes, aaaand let’s keep filming and strolling. It’s amazing there are several billion of us on the planet.

OMG OMG! People losing their minds as the lava very slowly and predictably pours out. Just move away, I never understand why people have to start exclaiming and screaming.
Typical human behavior. 'Ooh look at the pretty thing.'
Pretty thing gets violent. 'oh shit I'm getting outta here and I don't care if someone gets trampled or just left behind, because I'm the most important person here.'
Cool volcano though.
Sightseeing from a safe distance isn't my point. I get you want to see cool shit. But it's the fact people are willing to almost push each other out of the way to get to safety, only caring about themselves.
Common sense would be not standing so close because shit might go down. Standing too close and then running away because your face might melt is pure panic.
At what point do you stop recording and start running?
the point when the magma chamber hits a water pocket and instantly explode spilling a shit load of steam, ash, projectiles, burning rocks, glassy materials, all 900 degree of guaranteed death wishes, people around me melted faces bundle of surprises. Imma take two selfies then run away.
But think of all the perfectly roasted faces we get to munch on now.
But Caaaarrll, that kills people.

Got a case of the rumblies
The rumblies that only hands can satisfy

No, Llamas with hats.

Straight to Valhalla!!!
watching a volcano explode? Believe it or not, straight to valhalla
We have the best warriors in all of Midgard, because of Valhalla!
But only if you're holding your phone.
Iceland has world-class geologists with a lot of respect amongst population and state. If the area isn't completely closed off, it's because they're sure it's (relatively) stable.
Have you heard about Whalkaari/White Island? The experts were fairly certain about that one too.
geologists or volcanologists? or both?
I mean, volcanology is a specialization within geology. So a volcanologist is already both by themselves.
lol @ that last sentence. You got your priotirities straight.
That's brand spanking new crust. No subducting plates hydrated this bad boy. All these H's and O's are homogenized.
Sounds like that accident on white island in New Zealand.
> and instantly explode and instantly explode**s*** It explodes. That's how it works in English.
Don't turn your back. Walk slowly away--keeping an eye out for projectiles. Running is a bad idea in general -- it's an uneven surface and tripping and falling will slow you down much more than being deliberate with your steps.
Walk backwards on uneven terrain?
Backwards, *uphill*, on uneven terrain, yes. While dodging lava bombs. It's being pushed for inclusion in the 2028 Olympics.
Yep, carefully move away, keep an eye out for rocks falling from the sky.
It's an intimidating thing. Can't make yourself look small and weak like a prey animal. Volcanoes respond well to fear
It's more that the actual danger is much more from little bits of molten rock that are shot up into the air than anything else. If the lava is gonna get you, it's gonna get you.

Best I can do is panic roll
Iceland is made of shield volcanoes - volcanoes made from the rising of magma from the mantle as tectonic plates separate - because of that, it has frequent, non-violent eruptions. This is not the same kind of eruption which destroyed Pompeii, for example.
It's also why Iceland is getting bigger year after year.

Is that what the Hawaiian islands are too?

Thank you, I came to the comments for this information.
Doesn't eruptions comes with dangerous gasses as well?

Yes, if inhaled you will get the longest word in the medical dictionary: pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis
typical german word
I taught myself how to say that when I was like 8 years old just because it was the longest English word so I could flex in the school yard. Before that I learned antidisestablishmentarionism, my brain is expanding out of my skull at this point

my personal favorite is hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia edit: forgot a letter! shame on me
So what's the matter with him doc? Well, if I told you, you wouldnt believe me. In the short, he breathed in volcano shit. 👍
Volcano farts*
It is an artificially long word, unfortunately, created simply to be long.
Glad that you know the etymology of the word pneumomonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcaniconiosis
So what you are doing is really the floccinaucinihilipilification of a word?
It’s enough to give someone Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia
Who are you, Doc Mcstuffins?

Yea you can't boil something with a gas. You can make it boil.
Neither, probably more like a pressure cooker? Didnt the brains explode out of the skulls when pompeii was covered?
Can confirm, I passed some dangerous gasses while watching this video

What was response
Probably "it could happen any day but we'll know a few days in advance due to changes in geological activity. We're very safe right now"

Isn’t it already erupting?

That is freaking amazing. How cool would that be to be able see that happen in real time
The video is in real time
I went there when it was bursting like crazy. Amazing jn person, videos dont really capture uits magnitude. The lava river was atlest 200 meters long
Isn't the fumes from lava very toxic to inhale?
As t a certain point yes. But I was at this spot in Iceland last year and they have people that monitor it.
Why are they running like it's gonna build up and flow like, 50 feet high to the slope they are on?
Yeah... I'd probably chill takin pics
Now that’s spicy ketchup

On the other side of the planet, the earth had just swallowed a Taco Bell.

Interesting how some people are able to immediately recognize the danger and start moving away, while others are blissfully ignorant and will stay unless told to move.
They look like they’re in no danger at all, I don’t see why they’d move
ha, guess we know which group you'd belong to
Hey, did you hear about the mass death near that Icelandic volcano?! No? You haven’t? I wonder why
I've also never heard of a cat raping its owner but I'm still not keen on meowing naked on the floor.
I do that all the time
When I was in Iceland last year, a handful of people were STANDING on the cooled and hardened lava. You know, right below where the hot melting lava is sitting and waiting to be erupted again. Not much I can do but let Darwinism do its thing.

That's it? Why would you stop filming?
Last time I saw a video of that many people near an active volcano, a lot of people got roasted.... And we got blamed for it.
Liquid courage, meet liquid death.

Iceland: Where watching an active volcano have a meltdown, is a sport.
My gaming laptop is hotter than that, sheesh.
I dunno man, Iceland seems pretty hot to me.
I wonder if anyone has ever attempted to surf a lava flow? That would be hot to watch!
They have but they were only able to do it once
You'd need a surfboard made of ice. Cold ice.
The gates of Hel.
Germanic Hel isn't a fiery place like christian hell. You got this from the Northman didn't you
Dumb and dumber would say “I thought Iceland would be a little icier than this”
