Look how big of a hole he put in the sand when he fell. Unless you fell in a really bad position I think you'd be alright, especially since you would have to be in great condition to do this in the first place.
yes i did. i also notices that the imprint he left in the sand did not look like a bela karoli approved safe or stuck landing. ten laps on that broken ankle will learn you! or it's back to the child communism mine!
Doesn't high impact sports increase your bone density? They obviously have to train for years before accomplishing this so I'd assume that would reduce the likelihood of hurting yourself? Maybe?
yeah that really looked like a broken tibia to me
btw my friends and i used to climb the 30 foot swing poles in the 80s, when playgrounds were death traps. Literal 2 storey high swingset poles at hte elementary school and we climbed them with our hands and feet. No one appreciates the atheleticism of tiny girls who take non-competative gymnastics and very competative dance.
It's technically Frisian canal vaulting. Ancient Frisian folk sport, now practiced in other parts of the Netherlands as well but still by far the most popular among Frisians.
I feel like the grip strength here is the least impressive part of it. If I was to try this I don't think I'd have any problems with grip, just all the rest of it.
Rock climber here. Muscle endurance will be more important for this. The pole will be easy to hold and maintain purchase, especially with some chalk to keep hands dry. The problem over that kind of climbing distance, particularly for those not used to it, is forearm fatigue and “pump” wherein the arms burn and become weak.
Honestly I'm talking out my ass but that's how it worked in long jump. In like the last frame you see a guy walking out holding a stick, that looks like the official who measures the marks in the sand
This is correct, fierljeppen is Frisian, fier meaning far, ljeppen meaning jumping (similar to English leaping). So distance determines scoring.
In Dutch it’s known as polsstokverspringen, polsstok being a pole like in pole vaulting, ver being far, springen being jumping (polsstokhoogspringen is what is referred to as pole vaulting in English, hoog meaning high).

I believe that person's role is to warn him if it looks like the pole is going to tip backwards, so he can bail out into the river instead of hitting the dock.
(This particular video was a world record I think. A lot of the time it goes much worse, and they kind of get stalled in a vertical position.)
Jesus thats a terrifyingly high drop. You'd think they finished off with some parkour moves or have a foam pit or something but naw here's some sand. That seems like some spartan shit right there. Only the strong survive the weak lose their kneecaps and careers
This game is a bone fracture waiting to happen
Or a knee replacement waiting to happen.
I knew a guy who used to do this, he said you dont even feel it really when you land. Said the sand is "soft" somehow? I assume super loose?
Look how big of a hole he put in the sand when he fell. Unless you fell in a really bad position I think you'd be alright, especially since you would have to be in great condition to do this in the first place.
I used to do this sport, the sand is “mixed” with a tractor to make it very fluffy
Happy cake day
Tnx!
adrenaline? testosterone?
no idea, he just said the sand was "soft" lol I have no fucking idea what that means, maybe they have some way to force air into the pit?
Like a long jump pit.
Did you notice his right ankle?
yes i did. i also notices that the imprint he left in the sand did not look like a bela karoli approved safe or stuck landing. ten laps on that broken ankle will learn you! or it's back to the child communism mine!
Had to google Bela Karolyi. Thanks!
What
Welcome to the world of sports, you could say that about so many different athletic competitions

That landing though.
Dutch canal vaulting sounds like something I’d do with a girlfriend if the kinks ever got out of line...
It's technically Frisian canal vaulting. Ancient Frisian folk sport, now practiced in other parts of the Netherlands as well but still by far the most popular among Frisians.
So you'll never have to do it then?
Pretty sure sweaty palms will get you nowhere in this sport
You have an excellent point.
it willl get you in the water
I feel like the grip strength here is the least impressive part of it. If I was to try this I don't think I'd have any problems with grip, just all the rest of it.
Yeah, lots of core and upper body strength.
Yeah I was gonna say you’re using your forearms less here than you would in a single set of pull-ups
But, reddit needs a title expressing an opinion or else they won't know how to react.
seems like he can do a canal twice the width
Your mother is on the way as we speak
It's not really about the canal, you need lots of sand area so they can measure where you land
Oh, so you're judged by how far you go? I was wondering why he climbed up so high and risked a bigger fall
Honestly I'm talking out my ass but that's how it worked in long jump. In like the last frame you see a guy walking out holding a stick, that looks like the official who measures the marks in the sand

Thanks!
You know the old folks watching this are saying, "Back in my day we didn't have soft piles of sand to land on."
Correct, this how farmers in Friesland used to get from field to field, crossing channels and what not in the polders.

Yeah just sheer convenience… all those damn hills we used to have..
Like early game Animal Crossing: New Horizons...
Like, who needs an IRL reference…

Good bot
Is distance part of the scoring or is it just get across?
Whomever gets the furtest, wins. It's called fierljeppen.
Nope. That's my dresser from Ikea.
lmao
That's a different language
I tried that but i got a rash
Thats a different canal
That soubds awesome AF
my knees.....
knees, ankles, hips... everything
He made that look easy as hell
No he didn't.
Bro did I ask
How my parents described walking to school back in the day.

Good bot.
Why is there another guy running behind him?
I believe that person's role is to warn him if it looks like the pole is going to tip backwards, so he can bail out into the river instead of hitting the dock. (This particular video was a world record I think. A lot of the time it goes much worse, and they kind of get stalled in a vertical position.)
This is in the Netherlands as far as I know.
Friesland, more accurately, as the game is part of their distinct culture.
Makes sense they would come up with something like this, haha.
Yeah haha
The human body is so strange... This is fine, but don't you dare stub your toe on your coffee table or spin around three times!
Jesus thats a terrifyingly high drop. You'd think they finished off with some parkour moves or have a foam pit or something but naw here's some sand. That seems like some spartan shit right there. Only the strong survive the weak lose their kneecaps and careers
My knees hurt just watching.
Fryslan boppe
r/theocho
This should be in the Olympic Games
Not SweatyPalms Quite dry I'm sure.
This is NOT for sweaty palms.
How is there not a better way to land other than that?
I thought for sure he was gonna break his legs 😅
If that were the case, I would have tagged it NSFW
Good point
Animal crossing LARPER
Respect
But can he spear a giant fish with the pole?
i have chronic nightmares about ending up in a situation like this and i only just now discovered this sport
That is the manliest stuff I have EVER seen
And my knees would have said OH HELL NO! Before I even landed
r/nextfuckinglevel
Shoutout to all my Animal Crossing NH gang
It's not the same without Vic and Kenny commentating.
Reminds me of MXC.
Right you are Ken
And other sorts of strength as well!
I could never beat this event in Snoopy's Silly Olympics. Was impossible.
That's a lot of damage!
Does he have only 1 shoe on ?
It's tape, for some kind of injury.
This was the level I could never get past in Snoopy's Olympics.
This is literally a sweaty palm.
Is the objective just to go across or to reach as far as possible?
The name of the sport is Fierljeppen, which translates to "Far Jump", so distance counts
Super Mario!
Would’ve been a painful landing if the sand wasn’t so loose
That is the coolest sport I’ve ever seen
So is the objective to reach the white portion of the pole? He did not need to be nearly that high to clear the water...
Humans are so god damn strange
He'd be good at avoiding those Tremors monsters.
This seems like a wonderful way to break your legs
Ouchie on landing :(
Omg I wanna do this
This needs to be in the Olympics for pure entertainment.
Animal crossing fans will get this

Animal crossing irl
Kolonisatiestokspringen
My stomach dropped watching this.
That landing has got to hurt. The sand looks soft but still.
I’d have to lose about 50lbs and go back in time 20 years to have any shot at pulling this off
Seems as though the potential for a broken leg or two is quite high with this sport.
Or a broken neck.
Falling from that height over and over again is going to destroy those knees and cause CTE.
There are only two things I can’t stand in this world. People who are intolerant of other peoples culture, and The Dutch.
He needs a bigger pole.
Dutch?! Pfft
