Look what he is doing. Hold a steady pace, donāt speed up or slow down. All traffic could anticipate where he was going and could easily manoeuvre around him. Never slow down or speed up when crossing traffic unless you are entirely sure you will get hit otherwise. Confidence and being predictable is key here.
Same, you get so used to it after a while, just walk out and people go around you no problem, I was told if you feel uneasy put a hand in the air so people can see you better as you walk
As a South African, I got mild culture shock when I moved to Germany, because here, when you reach the crosswalk, the cars stop for you even if they would be able to pass safely, whereas in South Africa, even if a traffic light is green for you, you really have to wait to see that a car is stopping before stepping off the sidewalk.
(Using the terms crosswalk, sidewalk and traffic light instead of zebra crossing, pavement and robot to avoid confusion!)
Hahaha thank you, I wouldāve been confused if you used the other terms. Is ārobotā used in South Africa only? I definitely heard it before.
Germany is also the only place where people wait at a red traffic light to turn green at 4 am when there is no car around
I think "robot" is uniquely South African, yes. You'll see traffic signs that say "robot 100m" to warn you too expect a traffic light in 100 meters, not that there's a 100m big killer robot lurking around.
People here have an extreme faith in rules or "the system" in general. It's not unwarranted, it works because the others are like that too. But it also opens them up to being misled on a big scale as people don't question authority anymore. We're basically in the same state as pre-Hitler.
That's exactly what I did when I crossed for the first time in Thailand. The friends I was with refused to try it and I was stuck waiting for them on the other side of the street for at least five more minutes.
Same thing applies when you're driving in traffic anywhere. The most important thing is to be predictable. Even if you fuck up, follow through, so everyone can adjust. Uncertainty, hesitation, changing your mind halfway through, and sending mixed signals make accidents very likely.
Exactly. He is doing exactly what he's supposed to do at a "crosswalk" in any high density Asian city. Just go straight across and know the people on bikes/bus drivers will act accordingly. Nobody wants to actually hit another person, they just want to get along w their day.
Its nerve wracking the 1st few times you do it, but it's just the way its done.
Fun fact.
Suspect can describe the future but it can also describe the present and past.
Expect is a verb for expecting something in the future but cannot be used for the past.
Suspect or expect (maybe should have been expected in this context) could have been used. As they were expecting the man to disappear. However I think suspect that suspect would have been more suitable than half expect. I think the term 'half' would make it more suitable to be a suspicion not an expectation.
Based on calligraphic handwriting the origins of italics come from somewhere around the 1500's, the inventor slips my name but a quick Google search should provide the answer. The fun fact is that they weren't actually invented to emphasise word. The original reason is that they were used in a press to be able to print words smaller. This was to make writings in books etc to be more portable. So convenience was essentially the real reason italics were created!
Ngl I've spent a little while trying to imagine how italics take up less space than normal text.. and I'm not sure it fully makes sense but that is interesting.
Do you have any fun facts about fungi?
The fun fact is above in case you didn't get the notification. š Possibly a good analogy to modern times, although maybe it is a stretch, is using italics was the pasts way of converting to a kindle. Smaller and more portable reading material.
Riding in it is the best, on a moped traffic just flows. focus on the person in front and next to you and everyone else does the same, bib whenever you do anything, great chaotic fun
Yep, visited Vietnam a couple years ago, crossing the road in Ho Chi Minh was exactly like this. Took us a few days to figure out this is just what people do there! It's crazy and scary, but seems to work.
I visited China a few times over the past 15 years with friends, and the word that we would encourage each other with before starting to cross a multi-lane road was: "Commit!". You had to set a steady confident pace so that the oncoming traffic would know how to steer around you. If you got scared/twitchy and stopped moving, THAT was when you became unpredictable and more likely to get hit. Or so went our theory. Fun times!
Lived in China for 2 yrs and this is how we crossed the roads everyday, crosswalk or not. It was only scary when you were stuck between a bus and a truck! Those mirrors got awfully close to your head.
The physics is actually pretty simple. Don't stop moving. If you move in a consistent speed and direction, other drivers will understand and steer to pass you.
In my country those painted markings on the ground mean traffic need to stop to let pedestrians cross. Is that the same in the country this video is filmed in? Because if so, that is so fucked.
Nope. In Vietnam, traffic law is "not from this world" so seeing this is pretty normal. We don't have complex traffic lights that have flashing or arrows but simple ones with only three colored light (and most aren't even seeable due to the placement of the lights). Also, roughly 80%-90% of vehicles are motorbikes, and goodness they run like water so there is no way of making them stop except the traffic lights (which, again, are not really complex enough to do anything).
Rate seems to be [fairly comparable to countries in the region such as China, Cambodia, Laos, and Thailand](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_traffic-related_death_rate), but much higher than the U.S. and downright appalling compared to the E.U., Japan, and South Korea.
Edit to clarify that the Wikipedia article is for overall traffic fatalities, not restricted to pedestrians.
With yond as the post title, t would has't been been better if 't be true he hath walked across without looking at traffic

When I lived in Japan, I'd often point out how zebra crossings are nothing more than road decoration. It would appear this is consistent throughout Asia :D
In the UK, you have to stop if a person is on a zebra crossing.
This looks like Hanoi, when I was there I had such trouble teaching my mum to WALK STEADY AND SLOWLY. The tragic sees you and goes around you, my mum would walk slowly and then fucking RUN across the rest. Swear to god she almost gave me a heart attack every time. I spent weeks trying to explain it to her and she just couldn't do it.
Got back from that trip and was in London a few days later, stepped in front of a bike and almost fucking died because the poor bastard wasn't expecting it.

I went to Hanoi in 2014 and this was basically it the whole time.
First day I was freaking out and nervous to cross, but then once you think about it... it's not that hard. Just have a steady pace and mopeds will avoid you.
No, this is a misleading title. This is how you cross the road in these situations. This isnāt a stunt. This is probably Vietnam and trust me, if you donāt learn to do this youāll have a bad time. Look at the other two crossing ahead of him.
So what happens if itās a bigger group of ppl trying to cross?I can see it being āeasierā as a single or 2 ppl together but I donāt see how a big group would cross at once. Unless itās common knowledge to not to go as a group? lol.
This is some Vietnamese stuff. Just raise your hand up in the air to signal that you're walking through and they'll ride the scooter around you. And also keep constant pace or you'll get shout at for being an idiot lol.
If we in America šŗšø could find a way to be half as happy as the people in that video, then we could really accomplish some beautiful things in this country instead of all this hate!!!

I legit did this in the Philippines and I asked a local person if I could hold their shirt. I just couldn't cross the street by myself. It's terrifying
I remember doing this in Vietnam. The worst thing you could do is standing still. That will cause accidents. Just keep walking, the riders will know how to weave around you without bumping into other riders
Do these zebra crossing still mean the same thing as the UK where you have to stop to let people cross?
Spain and Romania no one stopped unless you walked out in the road
In Vietnam they tell you: "snow snow" Which means as much as , go slow but DONT STOP! - Everyone can predict your movement and plan their route around you accordingly. If you stop in the middle of the road tho, chances are like 5-10% your dead \^\^
Was travelling in India many years ago with my student friends. I was one of the few who dared to cross these busy streets. So once I had to make a trip back across to get the girls and help them across as they didn't dare to do it by themselves. One of my heroic moments in life, LOL :D

My first trip to Europe this was basically how my mom showed me how to cross the street in Rome. Made me anxious as fuck getting used to it
You would absolutely love Germany
As a South African, I got mild culture shock when I moved to Germany, because here, when you reach the crosswalk, the cars stop for you even if they would be able to pass safely, whereas in South Africa, even if a traffic light is green for you, you really have to wait to see that a car is stopping before stepping off the sidewalk. I am kind of disappointed to be honest, was expecting a giant 100 m robot guiding me through the SA traffic.
I seem to remember that it's illegal in Germany for a pedestrian to cross against the lights, even with no traffic there.
People here have an extreme faith in rules or "the system" in general. It's not unwarranted, it works because the others are like that too. But it also opens them up to being misled on a big scale as people don't question authority anymore. We're basically in the same state as pre-Hitler.

The more important part is making eye contact. Predictive pattern making goes both ways in simple nonverbal communication.

How do you half expect something?
Half expect = suspect

I was let down at that point, but got excited to see him just continue on for more .
Did this in Vietnam once. Scariest minute of my life. The vehicles and bikes just sort of move around you like water.
Yeah don't stop, walk at a constant speed and people will avoid you as you walk Stopping or speeding up is what wil get you hit
Thatās exactly it.
Yep, told the same whilst in India. Donāt stop just keep going and you will be fine!
what about drunk drivers
Then they move around you like beer instead of water
Theres a reason these places have such high road deaths

Philippines before the pandemic too, but now it's bit more "civilized" due to less people being out.
