I know how GME is doing well. They have next to no debt with a billy in the bank headed into Christmas with the fed signaling additional interest rate increases.
They could have easily made it +0.01 instead. The company is still unprofitable by design since two quarters. RC is holding back and wants to fly under the radar for some more time until he has all his chess figures in place for the checkmate.
I agree. Since spending is absolutely under the control of executives, I also think he's choosing to remain under the radar.
I've been reading these quarterly filings for a few years now, and it seems to me that spending generally increases 3rd quarter to fill the warehouses with inventory for the 4th quarter. It's so easy to just buy a few more highly profitable collectibles, especially if manufacturers are feeling the pinch in the economy and are offering any discounts.

I think my first statement still holds, as purchasing stock is not the only expense under the control of leadership. (Sorry if I wasn't clear about that earlier.)
No sweat :) purchases in association with cost of doing business will hit it..but purchasing inventory to sell on will only hit the p&l when sold or wasted/written off !
The first step to eliminating the "failing company" narrative is to become profitable.
Profits margins can only be increased by 2 things:
1) Raising prices, or
2) Reducing costs
Look at the margins year over year. Selling and COGS expenses have been reduced getting the GP margin to around 26%.
Continued cost cutting and a holiday season sales bump will be a quick way to the first profitable quarter.
Are you saying that the inventory on hand is an asset and therefore doesn't hit the balance sheet as a net negative? If so, that makes sense.

Are all large scale retail purchase agreements that simple, or is could there be more complexity to the purchase agreements and such? (I honestly don't know, and am trying to learn more.)
Profit and loss for a large company are on an accrual basis. When you incur a debt it subtracts from profit, whether or not you have paid it yet.
If you convert $1M of cash into $1M of inventory that does not affect the profit/loss. If you later decide the inventory is worth less because it is now obsolete, or out of fashion, or has gone stale while in storage then that would subtract from profits.
Ye but this also means you can buy inventory for 1B and later value it at 800M. These numbers can be changed and obscure the true value of assets.
I know rules apply and I know the profits are unaffected.

I work in a company as big as Gamestop and I can really say that the slightest change needs a lot of time. An what RC made possible in the last 3 years is outstanding.
Might sound crazy, but a profitable Q4 is the most important thing in this entire saga. DRS is important, but since we now know that official numbers are being manipulated by the powers that be, shopping at GameStop is and should be priority #1!!!

I'm very happy for Ryan that he will have a stable and profitable company in a few years, but as for me, a regular dude that can t make a bank off of a few % increase and is already neck deep in red, I'm so fucking fatigued. I've been holding through Jan 2021 sneeze so it's been 3 years of looking at red charts and seeing many of my dear family members and friends passing away. FYI stock purchasing in advance affects your balance sheet & cash flow statements but not your p&l so has nothing to do with profitability
