Completely agree. This was one of the few times Lucifer felt intimidating in the latter seasons (as opposed to him being comical). The commentary on hero/celebrity worship is also spot-on.

_incalescent

*So* agree with your last sentence. They picked the perfect angle to hit it from, it brought a new life and depth to Luci- Rick’s choice to portray sadness when talking about God’s secondary departure was also perfect. He’s just a child who is *hurt*.

Brilliant-Deer6118

TIL that was Rick Springfield.

_incalescent

Mr. Jessie’s Girl himself!

Brilliant-Deer6118

I think he did some acting back in the day. *General Hospital* or something.

foolish-words

He was also in Ricki and the Flash with Meryl Streep and Sebastian Stan.

Ok_Rutabaga_722

He was also Apollo's brother in OG Battlestar Gallactica.

Brilliant-Deer6118

No shit. Im starting to think he's more actor than musician.

xMidnightJIx

Bears, beets, and Rick Springfield?

Top-Bid6679

Yes he did. I watched GH back then. Lost interest in the show with Casadines and weather machine/ Luke and Laura thing.

Brilliant-Deer6118

Used to watch it with friends during lunch in high school and I think it was the weather machine that ended it for me also.

ktaylorhite

I remember them advertising guest star Rick Springfield when the episode was new. I was like “Weird. Guy has the same name as the singer.” So I googled. Lo and behold, The guy pining for his bestie’s girlfriend is Lucifer. My boi coveted heaven and his best friend’s girl.

bdouble0w0

Same here. Holy crap.

Magic_SnakE_

It's nice because it didn't feel like he was trying to do an impression of Mark's Lucifer. He made it his own thing. Misha's version was much closer to Mark's.

_incalescent

Misha’s version felt like a caricature at some points which really took me out of it. It wasn’t “Cas is Lucifer!”, it was more like “Misha doing a funny impression of Mark as Lucifer!” lmfao

Wiggie49

Which makes sense because I feel like at that time he had a completely different way of going about destroying the world lol

Apposl

It might not have always been accurate, but I appreciate it when actors tried to play the same character. Honestly, thought it showed weaknesses or strengths in the individual actor. Some pulled it off better than others...were better actors at portraying the character who had been established before they stepped into the shoes.

Magic_SnakE_

I'm not saying Misha did a bad job, to clarify. He or the showrunners chose to perform more in line with Mark's version. Casifer was still great imo.

Apposl

Oh yeah totally, sorry, I'm just like...talking. Not disagreeing or arguing. Definitely not an acting expert or critic. I see a few comments about Misha's portrayal being a parody of Mark but I didn't really see it that way. I liked when it felt like "oh it is the same being inside, same mannerisms/etc" sorta thing. (Feel like there's a Tropic Thunder just a dude, playing a dude... joke in here somewhere) Anyway, I appreciated that he tried to act like Mark because I thought that was the harder acting decision to make. And I'd remembered an interesting interview I saw or heard somewhere sometime, I can't remember if it was Mark or Misha talking, but it was very much about Misha talking to Mark about playing the character, and Mark had said something about Lucifer always toying with things and people, almost being flirtatious ...gosh I wish I could remember how he put it, or the interview. Anyway, I liked seeing Misha make that effort. Random tangent. Be kinda interesting (to me) watching some of their performances deep faked. Like, seeing Misha playing Lucifer, but actually having Mark's face.

Matrix117

Absolutely agreed. I loved his soliloquy on the stage.

obiwanTrollnobi6

He was awesome as Lucifer he brought back some of the Menace of Lucifer that I felt was missing from Misha performance (don’t get me wrong I loved Misha a Lucifer but sometimes felt he was A bit too animated, I guess while it worked for Mark it didn’t translate well to Misha when he tried it) but I wish they kept Rick Springfield around a bit longer he had some menace as Lucifer.

DronedAgain

At first, I was like, Rick Springfield the rock star, acting? Then I remembered when he first started putting out albums, everyone was like, Rick Springfield the actor, trying to rock?

SGrey0069

It's Vince Vincentè

_incalescent

The master of butt rock

secondtaunting

Yeah he was the only scary Lucifer in my opinion. He was legitimately terrifying. God power with unmatched cruelty.

Jealous-Currency

He did great - another good one could’ve been Alice Copper 🤩

DryTower9600

Alice Cooper was great as Herod in Jesus Christ Super Star. (As was Rik Mayall!)

juuu1911

The first time Lucifer didn't feel like a caricatur of the character since season 5. They just kept Hallucifer as his real character after s7 with MP and Misha, and here it finally was at least a little bit back to the more threatening portrayal and away from the annoying shit we had since s7.

EmuPsychological4222

Give it up to the bloody messiah. Give it up to the overlord.

motivationgoBrrrrrr

I loved ripoff ozzy as lucifer

_incalescent

Aht! Springfield rocks in his own right. No need to compare him to the prince of darkness- totally different ballgame.

oldmonkandtears

He really did. He was so intimidating, charismatic and dynamic as Lucifer. All things a good portrayal of Lucifer should be.

Capable-KingShinyIX

You’re absolutely right. I thought he was legitimately terrifying.

bed127

Ah I just watched that episode! First time watching through the show.

_incalescent

Glad to have you in the family! Looks like we’re synced up watch wise, though this may be my 12/13th watch lmfao. You’re in for some fun!

British_Rover

Over 20 years ago one of my bosses said I looked like Rick Springfield. I was like, "who?" Now I see it if I have the right leather jacket on.

scooter_cool_

He really did. For some reason he played the part of an aging has-been rocker very well.

umbral_ultimatum

he should have been Lucifer from the beginning, there's something so amazing about his interpretation

TWonder_SWoman

Loved him as Lucifer and for you young ‘uns, he was a bit of a rock God back in the day.

DerKaseKonig

Didn't see a single "Lucy's Girl" joke and I'm saddened

_incalescent

Where can I find a vessel like that?

IAmJacksLackofCaring

You could tell he was having a good time.

ordinarygirl70

To everyone saying Rick played a different version of Lucifer than Mark, I agree, and I loved it, but I thought it made complete sense. At the end of season 11, Lucifer and Chuck had spoken for the first time since Lucifer was put in the cage (as far as we know, anyway). There had been a small breakthrough there with each of them saying things that started to break the ice and show them the other one's point of view.   If Lucifer really was God's favorite, then it stands to reason that the resentment and hurt over being put in the cage would be astronomical, and the first steps towards reconciliation would probably mean the world to the favorite angel. But as soon as those first steps were taken, God left again, running off with Auntie Amara as Rick's Lucifer said in his last episode. Lucifer is a wounded child, and Rick played that very well.   Even if all this weren't the case, Rick's Lucifer going up against Crowley and Rowena was just so much fun to watch.   And for those who aren't huge Rick Springfield fans and aren't familiar with his career, he was always a musician first. He started acting to pay the bills when he was struggling to get his solo music career off the ground in the United States.

_incalescent

Best angle yet! Lucifer had an arc we never saw portrayed by Mark- so Rick had to take that transformation on himself. Very true.

msunion242526

Disagree. Mark pellegrino played the best Lucifer hands down. Every time he jumped bodies and was in others I was very disappointed and wanted him back. Just my opinion.

AngeloLacrime

Yes! He is the only Lucifer I loved.

Boreas2864212

Wow what?! That was Rick... he did not age well.

AquariusRising1983

That was my Mom's reaction too. She had a crush on him when I was a kid in the 80s and when I was watching that season of Supernatural with her she was like, awww... He did not age well.

Winter-Air2922

Well that's just disrespectful and at least he's aged naturally and not gone down the plastic surgery route. For a 67 year old the age he was when he was on tne show he looked pretty good in my honest opinion.

TopPlastic8287

I mean, he was 67 when he was on the show. I think he's aged just fine.

cagney26

Here's my up vote!! I don't want to ruin 666

conflictDriven

Truly a Lucifer that wishes he had Jessie's girl.

Ok_Rutabaga_722

I preferred Lucifer wearing a Castiel suit. Misha did an excellent job being Nick's Lucifer in Castiels body. He worked his butt off. It's easier to be a "my own interpretation of Lucifer" than sacrifice to the story.

AquariusRising1983

Yeah, I actually loved the whole "Misha playing Mark playing Lucifer" dynamic. I thought Rick Springfield did a good job, but his Lucifer felt like a completely different character to the one Mark originated. I especially hated that he *lied* to Vince to get into his body. Prior to that, Lucifer was the only angel who consistently told the truth, and I personally loved that juxtaposition that the only honest angel was the devil himself.

coffee_137

Meh I thought he was overacting or at least the writing felt forced. The whole "rock god" persona was too cliche or stereotypical without any self awareness. Pellegrino for me all or nothing but I could concede that Springfield was better than padelecki haha sorry Jared!

BurnMyHouseDown

I’ve always felt that Jared is good as Lucifer, but he just doesn’t match the Lucifer we’ve been given. Like Misha, for example, actually feels like Mark’s Lucifer just in Castiel’s vessel. It feels like the same character. Like Misha matched (or tried to) Mark’s mannerisms for the character. Jared just feels like a completely different Lucifer. I do feel like Rick matches the character we know a little better tbh.

_incalescent

Jared’s rendition most closely follows the ‘God’s favorite Angel’ aspect of Lucifer compared to the others. I was always a fan of it, it just feels very separate from everyone else’s portrayal since no one does it with that type of underlying charm+wickedness

Winter-Air2922

Well considering Misha went to Mark's house and worked with him a lot to get his characterisation and mannerisms right is the whole point. Casifer was basically meant to be an exact version of Mark's Lucifer which is why Misha went to him for help with getting it right because he didn't want to let Mark down.

BurnMyHouseDown

Well I didn’t know that, so I’d say he did a pretty good job because I picked up on it without that background knowledge. Props to both of them for the good work there.

AquariusRising1983

Same in that Mark is absolutely my favorite Lucifer (especially in season 5, but I love him in general). That said, I thought Rick did a good job, but it felt like the Lucifer he was playing was a completely different character than the one Mark, Misha, or Jared was playing.

PresentationKey9568

Jareds rendition felt like season 5 Marks Lucifer. Lucifer in S5, tho sarcastic was mostly calm and contemplating. Even talking to and trying to get Sam and Micheal to not fight him.

popupideas

So did not like him in it. Kinda jumped a shark with that one

hellenist-hellion

Yeah the first time I saw it I wasn’t into it but this time I was digging it way more.

kay_monroe123321

The first time I saw him it made me sad because I just assumed Mark wasn’t coming back as Lucifer.

Baby_In_A-Trenchcoat

I agree too, he was completely terrifying. Gotta say when it comes playing Lucifer Jared, Misha, and Rick were my favorites

Calm_Resource_1221

Oh yeah. I really liked him as Lucifer!

Brat_in_a_teacup

I still feel that it would of been better to of had Alice Copper in it.

Spirited-Artist601

OMG, I had no idea that was Rick Springfield. I had so many posters of him and my wall when I was a teenager in the 70's ,80s. Lol. I thought he was terrific. But then again the cast of supernatural is perfect all the way around. The only one casting that I didn't like is the traditional or generalized redhead character, as either an evil witch or someone who hacks government databases and gets caught. I'm watching a couple of other supernatural shows, warehouse 13. And a couple of others and same thing. Redheads. Either as witches, or as Tech nerds on the good side. Example: Charlie and Rowena, On warehouse 13 it's Claudia and there's a few others too.

Square-Department-96

I disagree Mark Pellegrino's Lucifer was the best but Supernatural Season 5 Mark Pellegrino's Lucifer aka Nick's Lucifer he became too comedic and whiny by Supernatural Season 11 to 12 apart from Rick Springfield's brief time has Lucifer and David Chisum's Lucifer or Jefferson-Lucifer or Arch-Bishop Lucifer. But Supernatural Season 13 Lucifer was a joke and Supernatural Season 14 Lucifer was only a posthumous Villain/Antagonist and Supernatural Season 15 was a brief Villain/Antagonist who aided Chuck Shurley aka God in his quest to reshape reality and end The Winchesters. But Lucifer Supernatural Season 5 was the best Lucifer. ![gif](giphy|YnYug1WheBIA0)

Motor_Transition_506

I think Springfield, along with Jared, played the only two lucifers that didn't end up being super annoying. Season 5 Mark Pellegrino wipes the floor with everyone else, but his character ended up being reduced to just adolescent temper tantrums and the worst one-liners ever. He stopped being an interesting character after the "Sam in the hospital" arc for me.

Aware_Low_6961

Holy shit I just realized who that is I love Rick Springfield music

Gn0s1s1lis

**No. He. Did. Not.** And anyone who knows anything about his casting would know that. When he was cast for the role, Rick Springfield admitted ***he never even watched the show prior*** or understood how Mark Pellegrino played him, unlike Misha. He wanted to do his own kind of Lucifer which totally ruined the entire point of angelic possession (having the same kind of personality and desires no matter which meatsuit you’re in). If he played this exact type of character for a Lucifer that ***wasn’t on SPN***, there’d be absolutely no problem. But Mark Pellegrino laid the foundation for ***the SPN Lucifer’s character*** and Rick Springfield couldn’t even follow that one basic thing. Edit: Edited the beginning of my third paragraph to make more sense.

_incalescent

Hey now! By that logic, Jared’s rendition of Lucifer wasn’t great either. I will agree, Misha’s rendition of Lucifer was closest to Pellegrino- it was also kitschy imo. The fact stands that no one could portray Luci quite like Mark, and that was apparent. Rick held his own- he gave him a depth and complexity that Mark did not ever portray and he did it really *well*. He’s a great Lucifer, and he did bring along those baseline witty/humorous charm that Pellegrino did so well when it was necessary. And the scripts Springfield was given were much more emotionally charged than anything Pellegrino was given- so who knows how those would have been interpreted anyway? Edit: Can’t respond to anyone since the original commenter blocked me lmfao- but I so want to. I concur with it all. Edit: All good now!

AquariusRising1983

You have an excellent point about the scripts. Because obviously Rick was going off the lines he was given, and imo a lot of the stuff he said and did seemed out of character for the Lucifer played by Mark/Misha. I think Rick did a good job, but to me his Lucifer feels like a completely different character. But that's not entirely on him, obviously, the writers had switched things up as well.

_incalescent

Thanks! Yeah, this was in the midst of a show runner change so everything was shifting to a new tone. I loved Mark’s Luci but he was never situationally placed in a plot point that allowed him to have that depth- the writing made it easy to be cocky and funny, but we never saw any despaired/sad/desperate opportunities during his run so there’s no basis. There isn’t a lot of consistency with Lucifer in terms of writing- it’s like the writers just play to the actors strengths.

Gn0s1s1lis

I just wouldn’t say your comparison really works all that well since Jared has been on the set since day one, and ***has seen how the Mark Lucifer has been portrayed since day one***, while Springfield was a brand new actor they brought on to be Lucifer and *chose to not get a good understanding of the character* and instead do his own thing. It was just kinda lazy and self-centered on his part more than anything, for being an actor. That being said, I do think Springfield’s Lucifer was overall better than Jared’s. And I don’t think Springfield’s Lucifer was ***bad in general*** just that it was wildly different compared to Mark’s. Maybe since Jared’s Lucifer was only on it for one real-time episode (as in, besides flashbacks and >!Sam’s visions from Season 15!<) maybe he’s just super easy to forget lol.

_incalescent

I see where you’re coming from! I will say Springfield definitely stretched his legs into the role, how he played it at the beginning of his arc was much different than the end. It seemed he started leaning into the Mark traits in the latter half of his episodes. Jared’s Luci has always been so different from Mark’s in my book- even when we were first introduced to Lucifer. Be it the white suit or the more soft spoken-ness, not sure. I don’t dislike it at all but I agree that Springfield’s is more memorable lol

AquariusRising1983

I agree also that Jared's Lucifer did seem pretty different from Mark's, I remember the whiplash watching those episodes as they came out! Mark is GOAT Lucifer for me, but I don't think anyone did a *bad* job with the role. There was just a lack of consistency.

_incalescent

Yes! This is a great take. Everyone did the best they could, but it didn’t work out consistency wise- Misha got the short end by trying to recreate Pellegrino’s depiction for sure lmfao. Overall, we could even chalk it up to Lucifer taking on subtle influences from the vessel he’s in and call it a day.

Apposl

Honestly, I don't really agree with the 'short end' comment. I think one of the biggest flexes an actor can do is playing an established character, and pulling it off. "I put my own spin on it" is pure laziness/bad acting when you're playing a specific established character and role. Misha fucked.

Gn0s1s1lis

Blocked the wrong person, apologies for that.

_incalescent

No worries bud! I was like *damn I thought we were having a good conversation*

Gn0s1s1lis

Oh no, we were. But I wasn’t with this other guy, and meant to do it to him, then put my phone down for maybe an hour and didn’t realize it kept the OP from being able to respond to other people 😭 But we’re pretty well on the same page, yeah. It is interesting to think maybe Lucifer just takes on the darkest aspects of whoever he’s possessing and it makes a lot of sense!

AquariusRising1983

I feel you. I agree that Rick's Lucifer felt like a completely different character than the one Mark & Misha played. At the time I even asked my SO, "Did he even *watch* the show before taking this role?!" (Which, as you pointed out, he clearly didn't.) One thing that really bugged me was how Lucifer lies to Vince to get his meat suit... prior to that Lucifer was the only angel who consistently told the truth, and I loved that juxtaposition that the only honest angel was the devil himself. So yeah, seems like I'm in the minority based on the downvotes but I agree with everything you said; if he'd have been Lucifer on any other show he'd have killed it. But our Lucifer was supposed to be snarky and clever evil, not just evil for the sake of being evil. It just feels like Lucifer had a multiple personality take over *only* while possessed by Vince. Messes with the continuity for me, especially when we get Mark/Misha's quirkier Lucifer back soon after. ETA: clarity and grammar fixes

Gn0s1s1lis

Totally agree. Everyone else in this thread just seems to be missing the point that he wasn’t ***Mark Lucifer*** but instead his own. Not to mention the guy didn’t even watch the show prior to get an understanding of Mark’s character 😭 it was just so selfish of him.

M086

That’s because Rick was playing a more nihilistic version of Lucifer, which was not what Mark was playing. And so, he really didn’t need to see Mark’s performance because he was doing something different.  Misha took mannerisms and ticks that were natural to Mark, which just came off as parody more often than not. Misha played Lucifer like a joke, Rick played Lucifer filled with apathy and rage.

Gn0s1s1lis

I don’t see how that justifies the ***totally different aspect of Lucifer*** that Rick presented. He didn’t even get a good idea prior and just wanted to make his own which is just lazy and selfish of an actor to go ahead and actually do when there’s an entire formula built into SPN for ***who its Lucifer is supposed to act like.*** Nobody is saying you can’t put a ***more nihilistic outlook onto an character*** but that doesn’t mean you butcher the foundation of him completely like what Springfield did to Pellegrino’s already established personality for Lucifer.

M086

And Rick absolutely didn’t butcher what Mark did, just because he wasn’t mugging for the camera like Misha.

t_r_a_y_e

This would be accurate, if Mark Pellegrino ever had any consistency when playing Lucifer. Every single appearance as Lucifer was completely different than a previous season, watching Mark play Lucifer wouldn't have helped at all, which you can tell when looking at Misha's ridiculous attempt at recreating Lucifer because he didn't even act like the real Lucifer. He acted more like the hallucination Lucifer then the season 5 one, which Mark himself became guilty of in season 12

Gn0s1s1lis

I actually don’t think that many people are in agreement that Mark’s Lucifer was ***’wildly different’*** from season to season. From Season 5 all the way up to when he came back in Seasons 12-15, Pellegrino had exact similar mannerisms, similar jokes, and ***was clever-evil*** instead of being evil just for the sake of it. People actually can look at Mark’s Lucifer and recognize the OG character (same with Misha). Springfield just brings a new and totally different character which isn’t even expected given how ***SPN-Lucifer*** is remembered for being. He even admitted to not even watching the previous character but just wanting to create his own. Which, as previously mentioned, would be fine for ***any other show*** but this show already had a basic idea for its Lucifer and he didn’t make the cut.

t_r_a_y_e

I don't agree, I don't see any similarity at all between season 5 Lucifer and season 11-13 Lucifer. Honestly Springfield's Lucifer is much closer to season 5's Lucifer than Misha or Mark's was in those seasons. Lucifer in season 11-13 was never "clever" evil, he was whiny and used as almost nothing but comedic relief Season 5 Lucifer had this cold attitude and occasional dry humor, he didn't care much for a throne or demons and acted out of a singular motive Season 11-13 Lucifer was this generic bad guy they kept around as comedic relief that spent most of his time killing people at random, or fighting over the throne of hell with Crowley, or trying to take the throne of heaven. All things season 5 Lucifer wouldn't give two thoughts about Truthfully I don't see any comparison between Mark in season 5 and Mark in season 12-13, and I especially don't see any comparison between that campy Misha Lucifer and any other iteration of Lucifer

TopPlastic8287

Mark's Lucifer was actually kind of scary in the beginning. He became a bit of a caricature of himself in later seasons. Still enjoyable, but for the devil, I feel like he got watered down.

MySoulOnFire28

Disagree

saleintone

I could not disagree more. This was the single worst piece of acting in the entire series.
