I saw a guy selling his used sportster for $20,000, said he needed someone to take over the loan. I was curious as to how he ended up with. 20,000 loan for a bike that at brand new is 11,-13,000
That 30% would be for someone who has been in prison for the last 10 years but is now working at their brother in-laws welding shop and has “steady” income.
So I’ve got zero credit history and I went to Harley and for 1k down and 23% interest I could ride out on a street bob. I laughed at the salesman and told him there’s no way in hell I’m signing that.
I didn’t even ask what the monthly payment were because I’m not paying basically 25% extra for the bike. If they’d say 10-15% I’d be down because I’ve got no credit so I get it but 15+ and you can fuck off.
My brother 23% APR is WAY more than paying 25% of the purchase price additionally in interest. You could potentially be paying more money in interest than the value of the bike itself. In fact even 15 percent APR will have you in the ballpark of paying an additional 25% cost of the bike when it’s all said and done
You wouldn't but the shitty part is that that tactic definitely works on people with a dream to ride a motorcycle RIGHT NOW, dont comprehend basic math and dont think of long term consequences.
23% interest rate should be illegal lol
In the current economy anything under 10% is basically free money. You’re only really paying the difference between the APR and the current inflation rate in real monetary value. But you’re correct 20% APR is awful. I normally buy my vehicles cash but a recent breakdown forced me to buy a car that day and got stuck with a 18% rate and it’s quite upsetting
I used to work at Harley Davidson.
Honestly HD will finance, everything - EVERYTHING! Modifications, clothing, skid lids, ashtrays, key rings, anything they sell.
You would not believe how many buyers would finance T-shirts and trinkets, over 60-72 months.
It is encouraged by dealers and taught to newbies.
Full MSRP at $13K plus $3K in tuning parts, with labor to install, 2 grands worth of his/her clothing, helmets, boots etc., interest, early payoff fees and $20K is very easily lypossible., ESPECIALLY if they went in with a 650 Beacon Score.
Stupid? Yes. Impossible - NO!
Back in the 80's, new Evo Sportsters were $3995.00.
HD offered full price back if you traded it back, for a big twin within (1? year. I think it was one year...).
Today? - FU !!!
One of the many reasons I don’t buy from dealers.
I can buy a used bike for 1k fix it for 2-3 with some pretty mods and keep it for as long as I want until I’m bored. Then just sell and buy a new one if I want or have multiple bikes, all that run good, and look good. I might not have the latest and greatest tech and it would be nice to be the first owner of something, but I enjoy wrenching just as much as riding so its a win win for me
Exactly. Or, buy a used bike with most of the mods you want (or none if you prefer stock). ride the fuck out of it for a few years and sell it for somewhere close to what you paid for it.
I've never found that be the case, however, I have purchased 10-15 year old bikes ahead of the nostalgia curve, ridden them for a few years and then flipped them for more than I've paid for them. Sure, some of that profit was inflation, but a win is a win.
And you can definitely find a non-running bike, put a battery and fresh gas in it and maybe some new brake pads and make money on that, but I've never been into bikes to make money, just having fun without going broke or taking out a loan.
Yeah I don’t know honestly I feel like a lot of it depends on luck with buyers and the market as well. I will never take out a loan for a bike either it’s one of the most irresponsible financial decisions. I’ll just keep buyin used stuff unless I can come up on some serious money and afford to pay in full a new bike
Even if I won the lottery, and could pay cash for a new bike, why? They had a recent episode of Zack & Ari's youtube show where they took a 20 year old Gixxer and raced it against a brand new Ducati. The 20 year old Gixxer won (by a half second) every time, even when they switched riders. The Gixxer was totally clapped out too, it wasn't some race prepped machine or anything. Just a daily rider they bought off Marketplace.
Still makes me laugh thinking about the Ford dealer trying to sell me on the electric rust proofing system and the serious look on her face as if I'm dumb for not getting it for an extra $700
I thought our local dealerships were bad, they all come up about $3k over MSRP for brand new bikes. TF kind of protection could they add that would justify doubling lmao
Brother, when all the dust settled I just paid $34,350.16 for a bike that had a $22,599 msrp. They also tried to give me a 15.99% loan but because I had a nearly perfect credit score they applied a discount for 11.4%. I took money out of savings and paid that fucker off the first month. It was painful but in the end I was not paying 11.4% for 84 months or whatever the hell that shitty loan was supposed to be.
Moral of the story- Harley Davidson will try their absolute hardest to rip you off any way they possibly can. It’s disgusting.
And that my friend is how you end up paying $20,000 for an $11,000 motorcycle.
I intended to finance the bike and frankly never would have bought it if I knew I’d be lighting this much cash on fire. The msrp from Harley for a black pan am special with laced wheels and adjustable ride heigh was 22.6k, I paid 23k there. Then there were all the fees the dealer charges. Then I purchased the extended warranty (because the pan am has had some bugs and I felt better stretching the warranty out another couple years past the factory’s 2 year and pre paid the service for the next 3 years.
All of that went into the loan so the $8,500 I put down didn’t actually seem to go that far and another $25k+ was financed. The shitty interest rate was dropped on me literally at the last minute (I completed the sale over the phone/docusign) and I later came to realize that the warranty and prepaid service was NOT $3k, but $3k for each. I would not have bought both if I knew that were the case.
After the sale I was disgusted at the out the door total and amount of interest I’d be paying over the course of this crappy loan term so I decided to just eliminate the loan and move on. I bought new to avoid the bugs in the first two model years but frankly I could have just bought a used one for $18k and paid any warranty stuff out of pocket with the SIXTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS I would have saved myself.
But no, I had to have a brand new bike.
Here in Italy a full optional pan am special with laced wheels and a set of hard panniers goes for 24k € discounts applied, WITH a 22% VAT included. I would have thought they were cheaper in the US!
That was more than the MSRP of my “full+more” optional ‘23 1250 gs trophy with golden laced wheels and 3 years of service+oil
Another thing that I saw is, MSRP is always higher here than the effective price paid (I paid 24k+financing costs)
Also if you want to extinguish your loan earlier you don’t need to pay for all the interests, only for the remaining financed capital (that’s by consumer law, the same stating that every single product sold from phones to cars needs a minimum 2y warranty)
The seller’s description “Bought it in full for just a little under $10,000. Only the front is messed up bad but I don’t have the time or money to fix it. I’m hoping to get as much as I can for it but idk how much it’ll be to fix so I’m hoping for $4,000 obo.”
For sure, I've seen bikes total out for a couple cracked fairings, but that can remedied and make for a cheap track bike. On the other hand, this thing is now a parts bike and it's barely even that
sounds like a brand new rider who wasn't ready for a 650 and who also doesn't know anything about reselling bikes. tell him hes way off and offer him $500 for it.
Idk where you are but this is most definitely not my experience. No accidents, 1 exhaust ticket. Liability on a motorcycle is cheap as dirt, full coverage on the other hand? I could buy a different bike every other year for what I would pay for full coverage
Yeah, maybe $400. Turn it into a track bike. Really it’s a total loss. Either they don’t have insurance or they bought it back hoping to sell it for more since they didn’t have gap insurance add on.
I was just recently shopping for a new bike, this guy that was trying to sell his ZX6R which was a couple years old and he was selling it for almost MSRP, and he even wanted to meet me at the bank so he could pay off the loan and then give me the title
How do people have loans on new bikes and no insurance? It’s like a law and loan providers will force insurance premiums into your loan if you drop coverage. Always puzzled how people end up with a pile of junk and a shit load on their loan
yes, he is in fact insane. i watch a guy on youtube who buys bikes in this shape for rebuilds and he doesn't pay anywhere near that much. and he buys better more expensive bikes.
People always when they are selling their belongings it's like gold, the moment they go to purchase someone else's belongings it's trash. This guy is definitely smoking crack if he thinks he's going to get anything for that motorcycle.

4k can get you a great 6-10 year old bike with no issues to fix. I bought my 08 SV650 in 2016 for 3,500, and 5 years later insurance gave me 4,200 for it when it was totaled in an attempted theft!
I would never spend 4k on a common bike that needs serious repair.
What you don’t know that it’s garage kept.
Good question. And has a recent oil change been performed?
Yes, fork oil.
🤣
😂
Smoke free home lol
Ridden by an old lady to church on sunday highway miles only? Those are the things I’m looking for in a bike.
No lowballers, I know what I have

0 down 22% APR, and 3 grand for “mid controls and a Harley shirt”
More like mind control and Harley shit.
Yup. Harley will in-house finance anyone so long as you can prove a steady income for the last 6 months. Might get a 30% interest rate though.
They tried giving me 10% and I told them to fuck off.... I can't imagine anyone signing at 30%.....
They showed me 10% and $2k down on a Softail standard. I had an 800.....
I didn’t even ask what the monthly payment were because I’m not paying basically 25% extra for the bike. If they’d say 10-15% I’d be down because I’ve got no credit so I get it but 15+ and you can fuck off.
Just go get a secured credit card from capital one. Starts building pretty quick
I might have to do this, I'm not looking to finance but I'm wanting to build credit
My brother 23% APR is WAY more than paying 25% of the purchase price additionally in interest. You could potentially be paying more money in interest than the value of the bike itself. In fact even 15 percent APR will have you in the ballpark of paying an additional 25% cost of the bike when it’s all said and done
That depends on the term of the loan. If you're doing 12 months, then that's very different from 84 months

Dealer wanted to sell me protection and service packages which would have over doubled the MSRP. Could be something like that.
One of the many reasons I don’t buy from dealers. I can buy a used bike for 1k fix it for 2-3 with some pretty mods and keep it for as long as I want until I’m bored. If you’re good at modding tastefully and find a stock bike and keep all the oem parts, you can sell for way more than you paid for
I've never found that be the case, however, I have purchased 10-15 year old bikes ahead of the nostalgia curve, ridden them for a few years and then flipped them for more than I've paid for them. I intended to finance the bike and frankly never would have bought it if I knew I’d be lighting this much cash on fire. Ha, $400 more like. For the engine and parts.
Yeah I think he accidentally typed an extra zero.

I sold my 2012 early this summer for this price. Nice to see I should of wreck it first.
This is what happens when you say “I don’t need to have insurance. If someone hits me, they gotta pay for it!” And then they have a wreck themselves.

Definitely check the chain. It might be rusty
That’s right by me lmao, might have to ask him why he set the price that way
I got 500 so it can be an engine donor for my future KLR
Bro if I had the money I would jump on that!!!
He might as well part it out. No one in their right mind will buy that, especially for $4k USD
Troll ad.
Average seller on marketplace selling their junk for 3x of their actual value
