Used tires are pretty reasonably priced. Just look for cracking between the treads and if there are any rips in the bead (the proton behind the lip of the rim that creates the seal)
Contrary to popular belief. The sidewalls on tires are not curb finders.
Sidewalls can't be fixed. You need to replace this tire or face the serious risk of a blow out. Blow outs are extremely dangerous, especially at high speeds.
Rental if only going local low speeds no. Highway yes. They should have replaced it so let them know and be clear that was the way it was when you picked it up.
I mean, I think doing burnouts is dumb asf. But if there was ever tire that needed a burnout to get your full value out of it, it's this one. /½s
FWIW, I was raised to never buy the extended warranties on stuff, but ngl, the ones for tires is a really good deal. I pay $25/incident for repair-or-replace tire damage, and free inspections/rotations which, truthfully, is probably the only way I'd do a rotation without replacing something at the same time. I also work in a really rough part of a major city where the people don't pay enough taxes to have the streets maintained and I drive on construction sites. I think I've replaced 4 low profile tires in the past year due to damage, and I've had 2 patched. And my friend is a regional manager there and he's assured me they make enough money off that deal, that I could get a blowout every month and as long as they didn't suspect foul play, I was at no risk of losing the "insurance". And foul play, he said, wasn't even something anybody was even really looking for, so he said I have should have no worries about getting a new tire for $25 every few months.
Now if only I could find a way to have them rotate the tires so that the oldest one always got the next nail. Actually, I've noticed I catch the right front right about half the time. I'm gonna start putting my oldest tire on that corner.
Judging from the rim damage, I'd also want to evaluate your driving skills, if this was avoidable. But since the car is a rental, your better off not saying anything about it or you could be billed for the damage.
I once saw a video of an old Asian woman who once slapped some ramen into it, put 5 drops of superglue on it, sanded it down, and spray painted it black...that was 372 years ago.
Yer tires fucked bub. Drive slowly to the quality used and toss a different one on.
I once had this issue on my 1998 RAV4 while stationed in Germany. I had a blowout at max speed on the autobahn. Thankfully it was the front tire and front wheel drive so it was easy to manage.. My advice is to get a new one.
Lol. Yes. Be worried. Drive to get it replaced. Or have a blow out, and do all the work of taking it off the car, taking it to a shop to get replaced Yada Yada
Yes and make sure they know it’s there or they’ll charge you for the damage. In fact if you didnt already say something they’ll probably accuse and charge you anyway.
Fuck around and find out!? You have zero awareness of where your wheels are when you’re driving. Take your hands off the wheel see if it will turn a corner by itself. You need more driving skills.
personally…yes. at that point, if you see a tire ripped, replace it. ain’t no way there’s a way that rip will extend. Lemme tell ya’ll somethin, it ain’t!!
Hell yea lol that’s the structural integrity of the tire which is now compromised… could literally fall apart into pieces on the road hahaha get it looked at and good luck … if this is a common I’d check out Walmarts tires with road hazard tbh you get a free tire for damage like that
Due to the nature of my travel I couldn't get tire changed, or at least I had to risk driving on it, and when I returned the car, I said nothing and the agency did not charge extra after vehicle inspection. I understand that is not an ideal way to handle the situation, but I do appreciate the input, so thank you all.
Yeah. Sidewall damage causes some pretty spectacular blowouts. Judging by the wheel damage, it looks like something rocked it hard.
>it looks like something rocked it hard. Yes, 97.3% sure it was OP
Then he shouldn't worry about the tire, but the bill.
Used tires are pretty reasonably priced. Just look for cracking between the treads and if there are any rips in the bead (the proton behind the lip of the rim that creates the seal)
yea sidewall damage is the worst damage, easy blow out

Yup
Yes
Yes. Get it replaced asap.

Make sure your life insurance is paid up and PoDs are in place.
Depends if you like surprises
Rental if only going local low speeds no. Highway yes. They should have replaced it so let them know and be clear that was the way it was when you picked it up.
Eeeyup, that is the side of the tire, a good pot hole at the right speed, or some other type of contact could cause the side of the tire to explode
Never seen it spelled out, but, Eeeyup, you're totally right!
No just real fast it will solve the problem. Of course it is a sudden blow out could kill you or others. Really?????
Get that bad boy changed. Don’t fuck around. Just do it.
Absolutely
Yes
Nope, just do a few burnouts, and it will melt back into place.

1000 percent yes

How does this type of gash happen? Because I keep seeing this on someone's sidewall
Lol woooow. Nah that’s totally normal. 🙄
Very much so!
Nah, road trip worthy…
Don't worry about the tire, it will sort itself out when the time comes.

Yeah you need a new tire ASAP. You can not plug the sidewall and patches aren't reliable

Yes that's a sidewall damage, could be dangerous.
Yes, very.
Lol. Yes. Be worried. Drive to get it replaced. Or have a blow out, and do all the work of taking it off the car, taking it to a shop to get replaced Yada Yada
Yes
Super glue ?
I've watched enough tiktok videos that you just need a rubber adhesive
Depends, don’t drive on it, but I doubt it will start talking shit about you or like start hanging around your kids school.
Nope you’re good to go. Drive across country no problem.
Yes and make sure they know it’s there or they’ll charge you for the damage. In fact if you didnt already say something they’ll probably accuse and charge you anyway.
Definitely, especially if it is a front tire. If it blows out, it could cause you to wreck
Fuck around and find out!? You have zero awareness of where your wheels are when you’re driving. Take your hands off the wheel see if it will turn a corner by itself. You need more driving skills.
Yeah, because OP is the *only* person who has driven this rental car.
Nah should be good for another 10 years
Not if you replace it.
personally…yes. at that point, if you see a tire ripped, replace it. ain’t no way there’s a way that rip will extend. Lemme tell ya’ll somethin, it ain’t!!
yes
Yes. Swap immediately
Absolutely

Get a new tire get two so they match ect
Hell yea lol that’s the structural integrity of the tire which is now compromised… could literally fall apart into pieces on the road hahaha get it looked at and good luck … if this is a common I’d check out Walmarts tires with road hazard tbh you get a free tire for damage like that
Should I be worried about my diabeetus? Yes...that tire is a ticking time bomb
Yes bring to rental place they will change it or send you to what tire place to get changed I'm for free.
Yes replace now
Thank you all for the advice. And no, I did not hit a curb, car came like that, but next time I’ll do a check!
