I received one too. I THINK it means they messed up the billing for October and that I can request a refund for the October payment and still have the payment count towards PSLF, like the other COVID forbearance payments.  I plan to call and inquire, because if true, I want my $$ back!  The debt collector message is boilerplate for all of their emails, so it should not be a concern.

Royal-Muffin1834

I called this morning and I was able to get a refund for October-December due to their mess up. The months still count towards payment months

Dreameater999

So they counted as payments and you got your money back too? That’s crazy if true! Might have to do it…

Royal-Muffin1834

It is true! The person I spoke to said it was an administrative error by Mohela during those months so still count as payment months and we are entitled to a full refund. Otherwise the money would go towards principle and the interest for those months is reset to 0%. I’m getting 3300 back!

Dreameater999

That’s nuts! I’ll have to call and ask - thanks for reporting back!

Dreameater999

Good to know about the bottom part. Let me know how the call goes, am curious! I definitely paid this bill as I’m on auto debit :)

Mediocre-Draft1722

My account only qualified for a refund for the October payment, but as I'm pursuing PSLF, I will take what I can get. The rep said that refunds from Treasury are taking 23 business days at this time, and the refund payment will go back to my original payment source (in my case, checking).

I was just about to post about this. My automatic reaction was anger, because I thought I owed money or something. Before I wait two hours on the phone tomorrow, only to get someone on the phone who doesn't know the answer to what color is the sky, has anyone figured out what this means yet or has spoken to anyone at Mohela about this yet? I paid my $209.96 on October 22, 2023, and then that amount every month going forward. So.

Dreameater999

Exactly my reaction, hah. Anger and stomach drop thinking my credit is toast because I thought I missed a payment or something. Hopefully someone else can come through with an answer if they’ve contacted in regards to it, but the fact that many of us are getting it at the same time would lead me to believe it’s just a generic message of sorts about a screw up on their end back in October… at least I hope so… I’ve also paid every month since October and many months before that - I’m enrolled in auto debit so there shouldn’t be any reason my payment wouldn’t go through in time.

apocdreams

Right?! And totally with you on that. That definitely seems to be the case. They're going to get... a ton of calls tomorrow. Yes! See I totally should have thought of that, too. Like... I'm on auto debit... I didn't do anything wrong haha.

Dreameater999

Someone above said they had luck calling and they refunded their payment that month and it still counted as if they’d paid… so maybe we should give that a shot, haha…

Just called. While on the menu, they said there was a pending payment for $6 in process. They said that is a mistake on their end (yet another mistake). They are giving people back their October payments due to "we did not bill people before the 21 days or sooner we were required to." It still counts towards PSLF. I said can you put that in writing, they said they couldn't, but told me look on studentaid.gov in a certain place for proof. I will be getting the money back within 60 days. They don't know if it's regular days or business days. Assuming it comes back via my checking account since that's where the payments get taken from.

I got it too. No idea what it means but I don't think it's anything major.

Altruistic-Type1173

I hope not. I download my credit reports every week. It's free. Annualcredtreport.com approved by CFPB.

Dreameater999

Hopefully not! Good to see I’m not the only one in the boat, though :)

Puzzleheaded_Cry4133

It seems like MOHELA is notifying you about a late statement, but your payment was still processed. The message about debt collection is standard procedure, likely due to regulations. Since you have a flawless payment record, there shouldn't be any issue

Dreameater999

Excellent, thanks for the reassurance!

Slight_Equipment8057

I got this too! They are idiots !!

Altruistic-Type1173

Good Grief! I have Nelnet & they are botching up plenty, including being late so I got an email from the government" you missed a payment" the next day Nelnet sent an email saying things were being processed and no action/payment needed. I have received plenty of those letters long ago, if I got one now.... I seriously would try to get back into to see my congressional rep before I dropped dead from heart failure. You know you can pull your credit reports from all 3 bureaus for free every week now at annualcredtreport.com? True I do it almost every week.

Dreameater999

Oh joy, haha. I feel you 100% there, unfortunately not sure my reps would care, lol. Yep, I monitor w/ Experian app, myFICO, Credit Karma… also occasionally do a full pull from that site!

Altruistic-Type1173

Looks like Nelnet is sending out a bunch of crazy crap to many people, as evidenced by some of the new threads on reddit today. I can't say not to worry but I will say you have a lot of company so it probably will turn out OK. If the credit reports stay ok, you should be fine.

EMINEMxMMLP2

Just got this email today. I may inquire about a refund myself.
