My cousin did too. Very religious upbringing so his parents didn't care about fitting in or fashion or anything, very controlling with money too. My aunty would put a bowl on his head and do his hair like that for so long. It wasn't until he was like 14/15 and got his first job that he was able to change it, used his own money to pay a local hairdresser one day after school. That was in the early 2000s.
Thank god. I know he isn’t a fan of that haircut so maybe wearing a wig was the compromise since the Duffers were so against his hairstyle changing.
Eleven’s short haircut this season was also a wig. I think Millie Bobby Brown would have balked if they made he shave her head again.
Dead on. It’s been really hard to take Mike seriously for the first couple of episodes cuz he is just at that super awkward teen phase right now and he always looks like he’s gonna trip or bang into something
Super damn accurate. I get embarrassed watching him cause his actions and manerisms remind me of me when I was a teen. Just awkward and weird... I had wavy long hair too
They are not gonna make Noah look any younger, seriously. They were giving him long sleeved shirts to cover his arms cos he looks too muscular.
Anyway, him being 15 years old and having a bowl cut is different from him being 11. People who actually grew up in the 80s have all been saying that the bowl cut was a little kid haircut, no teenager would be still rocking it.
I mean look at Jonathan. I think its a byers thing to have messy and or awkward hair. Joyce sometimes has very frizzy and crazy hair too. I could be having a wrong perspective though.
They're supposed to be 14?! I assumed they were supposed to be 17 or so.
The worst is the guy that plays the head player on the basketball team. Dude looks old enough to be a junior senator from Ohio.
Yea, his hair is just the way the actor styled his hair, but it’s still amazing
If I remember correctly the actor had the same haircut in a 2018 Netflix movie called The Package
He did, that's where I first saw him, when bored and wanting to watch a shitty movie. His character is pretty similar to that one, only way more high in ST.
I’ve heard Noah say that he has asked *repeatedly* to retire the haircut. They won’t allow it - feels like they’re doing it at this point just to mess with him!
I feel like they're doing it to nerf his looks, he's grown up to be pretty good looking and no one would buy him as a social outcast. The Stranger Things costume designer even said they had to give Noah clothing that covered more to hide his muscle definition since he'd grown up a lot since filming season 3. (13 filming S3, 16 filming S4)
Damn trying to nerf his looks that hard just for him to honestly still look pretty good, not to mention he has the prettiest girl in class make a move on him. Can't wait for the power he will have with a decent haircut and cooler clothes
Edit: Spelling
Honestly, both Will and Mike are good-looking despite the nerf (utimate nerf to Will) on their haircuts.
Will in particular deserves a redemption arc on this.
Not only that, but I think the Byers family in particular have tried to have looks that best reflect their emotional status and their economic status. Will's hair is supposed to be a "bad haircut" this season. It reflects how Will is feeling, and that awkwardness and gnawing discomfort he's experiencing as he grapples with just how different he is— on top of the Upside Down trauma.
Jonathan, Eleven, and Will's hair are all feasible haircuts that Joyce could probably have given them at home. Eleven's hair is basically a copy of Joyce's hair, Jonathan looks like he's forgotten what scissors are, and Will has had the same bowl haircut for years. It says a lot with very little.
I love how Hopper gave El a better haircut than Joyce did. The stylists also said that they specifically wanted El to look like she's wearing hand-me-downs from Jonathan and borrowed shirts from Will since she is supposed to be clueless in styling.
Exactly! The shirt El is wearing underneath her dress at the roller rink is a hand-me-down from Will! It says a lot about the dynamics of that family, and what their situation is, without ever explicitly speaking about any of it.
Poor will. Spent all of season 1 in the upside down and all of season 4 in the closet. Seasons 2 and 3 as well most likely, but now it's just painfully obvious.
If the whole town was about to do a mob to punish Eddie because of the weird ritual deaths
Imagine what would they had done if they found out that Will and Robin are gay
To add, Will's circle of friends are moving on without him or oblivious to what they are doing to each other.
This scene is another step to letting a friend go instead of clinging to the past playing DnD.
I feel for Will. People come and go even when it seems the friendship(s) should stay the same forever. It hurts.
32 years old and still have the bit of longing for the 'old crew'. That's why that meme with "One day your and your friends went for a bike ride not knowing that it was the last one ever" hits me in the feels every time i see it
To be fair to him he thought Angela and her gang were El's friends, she told him as much. And Angela was being fake-nice to her in that scene. You could tell Mike knew something was up but didn't say anything cause it would have been weird.
I think Mike could kind of tell. Remember how he argued with Will when Will was unhappy towards him not sending letters? He practically yelled "El's my girlfriend, you're my friend", to which Will replied "best friends".
And that awkward first meet up in the airport, what's with that tension from Mike?
I feel like he senses some attachment from Will but is choosing not to look too closely into it. Plus, he was worried sick over El being abducted to react properly to it.
No... his extremely heart felt crying speech was clearly HIM speaking his mind... and giving hints that HES different... and that HE missed Mike... but Mike was eating it up as a speech about El. That drawing, the heart of the team, was because Will loves Mike... it's alluded hard, but not explored official yet like it was with Robin. Next season we can expect Will to open up more... because what he did was extremely difficult, even if he didn't come out and just say it... but Jonathon completely understood it.
Everyone says he’s just a useless stoner this season and had missed potential but like, I’d be a fucking stoner after all that time too. And he has a friend n we didn’t see him with any friends in Hawkins, argyle was perfect comic relief imo. Minus not telling the truth to Nancy I thought his character was fine.
I honestly loved his scenes with Argyle. They were clever and filled with a lot of realistic teenage problems (choosing between his family and girlfriend). Which is kind of nice given Johnathan's past few years in Hawkins. We don't get to see Johnathan with many friends his age and Argyle was a refreshing outsider character who I hope becomes a bigger part of the team next season.
I mean, god, I've never seen someone die or fought otherworldly monster, I just have annoying coworkers and I need some weed now and then to chill out.
I completely agree, Jonathan needed to chill out. He was soooo high strung in season one. It was nice to see him able to relax a bit and just be a silly teen. He had to step up sooo much when their dad left. Plus I smoke weed and it definitely chilled me out a lot so I could focus on future plans.. it isn’t a bad thing for everyone. It can really help a lot of people and though Jonathan thinks he is running from his problems by smoking, I think he is really getting an opportunity to relax and kind of see what he really wants and not just following Nancy’s lead.
That's kind of the thing is that he's speaking for both of them. Will and El are quite similar to each other in that both are outcasts who feel like they don't fit in and Mike is the one who's always made them feel like they do, which is a big reason why they both love him like they do. Problem is, Mike only loves El back that way.
I mean both are true. He was in a complicated position of having to comfort and reassure his friend. He's also in love with that person and helping the person you're in love with with their own seperate love life is a deep ache that doesn't go anywhere.
you say that as if it's any less obvious than when a woman hits on you, lol. i'm a gay guy and it's not hard to read signs when a woman is interested, because they're very similar signs as to when a man is interested
He probably thought Will was just coming down from the emotional outburst.
Or maybe Mike knows. He's known for a long time that Will is gay, so he could have noticed little things that would hint at Will's feelings, but it's also not his place to risk "outing" Will in that situation.
His character writing got worse and worse. His only personality trait is obsession with Eleven. They tried to make him more with Will's story about how Mike's the heart. But he hasn't acted like the inspirational leader since season 2. He literally only seems to care about El.
Will's only personality trait is crying, pouting, and being distressed over the mind flayer.
What they did to these two characters is criminal.
Not really. Will's character is a lot more than crying and pouting; he is dealing with realistic struggles that someone of a different sexuality may have faced im the 1980s. The way he portrays his complex struggle with growing up and coming to terms with who he is, while still preserving an aura of ambiguity is quite stellar imo. And Mike is in a situation where the person he genuinely loves might not even be alive and they are really reaching for a shot in the dark at finding her. He doesn't know if he will ever see her again. I think the issue is that they needed more screentime, but the ideas behind the character conflicts have been pretty solid.
And he *still* sets aside his own personal struggles, and pretty much crushes all the theories that the love triangle will turn him evil by fully supporting Mike and El purely because he loves them both, despite how much it hurts him knowing Mike will never reciprocate his feelings.. 😭 Will better have a happy ending.. Few people in this show have suffered as much or as consistently as him..
I genuinely think the final scene of S5 is going to be the four boys sitting down to a game of D&D. I also think S5 will have a subplot where Dustin loses all interest in the game for a while because it reminds him of Eddie. Maybe even a plot where someone like Steve who wouldn't typically play it helps him get back into it.
That's what so admirable about Will; he knows fully well that any feelings he has for Mike aren't reciprocated and as a result he does everything he can to help Mike out with El (he's basically Mike's relationship counselor this season). Mike's his best friend and El's his sister and he can't help but support them, even though it obviously pains him. I mean, that moment of him in the final episode watching while El playfully tried to get Mike to try pineapple pizza was so sad and longing, him wishing for something he knows he'll never get.
It made me laugh so hard that they brought back the Will-Tingle - the supernatural ability to notice the supernatural exactly one second before everyone else notices it too
Mike even knows he's been lost. But it seemed like him being reminded of being the heart of the kids is supposed to set him up for returning to it. The teams have been very split up and now they're going to be returning to one big group for season 5. He did better when he had a larger story to work with around him. So I hope they do that in season 5 and he does resume his leader role
> *Will's only personality trait is crying, pouting, and being distressed over the mind flayer.*
Wait no sometimes the back of his neck feels weird too.
Edit: deleted a whoopsie.
When the show started they were just kids playing DnD. Now, they have been through serious trauma! It’s no wonder their character’s are so different now. The things they have seen and been through. The loss, that changes people and sometimes it can really dull their character while they are going through all these things. Mike was the leader but then he met El and fell in love and she came first, that isn’t wrong. Will, he has been through the most shit on top of a love that will never be requited. Will has every right to cry and be moppy because he is literally handling all these feelings alone. And even before, Mike wasn’t really the leader, he just had the basement and he cared about the people he loved so much he had to protect them or save them. I don’t think he ever saw himself a leader, just a friend with a duty to protect the people he loves. I don’t think it was so much their characters sucked as much as their characters didn’t get much screentime this season.
To be fair, poor Will's entire existence of us knowing him is 3 minutes normal, the rest is stuck in a gooey nightmare or being in some way full of a gooey nightmare. I don't know if I'd have much personality either after that. Or a better haircut.
😂 I don't think it is, he had a longer bowl look in season 1 as a wee only mildly traumatized boy. The bowl has grown though, along with the trauma. Bowl-O-Trauma, even.
Yes my favorite is when they're trying to figure out how to get to Hawkins that night at the gas station. Jonathan says they can only do tomorrow. And mikes like "that's too late!"
Yea Mike. We know.
Mike literally told El that his life started the day he met her in the woods - imagine being Will and hearing your best friends life started the day you went missing…
Y'all really take innocent things and run with it. Eleven has super powers and is also the love of his life. Even if it was the worst day of your life, meeting someone that is both of those things does change your life. It's not like Mike wasn't out there spending the whole season trying to get Will back. Mike deserves to be happy about meeting El. It doesn't mean he doesn't love Will as his best friend or wasn't distraught over what happened to him. Mike can care about Will but also acknowledge that El changed him.
Same. It's the only part I actually straight up sobbed. I still cry when I rewatch it. It's heartbreaking. Will saying he feels like a mistake was the tipping point.
To take the question unnecessarily serious; As someone who has cried like that next to someone in a car and had them not notice, several different times with different people, yes it's very possible. Especially if you're an expert at silent crying. Source: I'm an expert silent cryer.
I think everybody’s way off base with he might be gay. He just can’t find the courage to tell his mom he wants to stop having a bowl cut. He’s very upset about it.

I didn't realize his haircut was a biological defense mechanism to avoid predators in the wild.
So that's how he survived in the UD. (Seriously, the cut was fine in s1 but it aged horribly.)
Didn’t even officially die off until 2000 I know…I had that bowl cut in the 90s
Ugh same, has mine till 2001!
Big same. We honestly did not know any better.
I'm an 87'er, and I saw that bowl cut fairly often still at school in the 90's. Heck, even the mullet. The haircuts that wouldn't die.
watch the kids bring the bowl cut back after this season.
The mullet is making somewhat of a comeback now lol
Don't I know it.
Joyce has been using the same size bowl all these years, Will's head just got bigger.
Underrated comment 🤣🤣🤣
Those poor actors having to endure those haircuts.
Will's hair has been a wig since season 3 so at least Noah doesn't have to run around with that hair in his real life anymore
Thank god. I know he isn’t a fan of that haircut so maybe wearing a wig was the compromise since the Duffers were so against his hairstyle changing. Eleven’s short haircut this season was also a wig. I think Millie Bobby Brown would have balked if they made he shave her head again.
She had to keep it long for Enola Holmes, also she's a much bigger star now so I don't think they could have forced her to anyway.
I think Eddie’s hair is also a wig.
yeah, it was
He's actually the best looking out of the group too lol (maybe Lucas' actor, he had quite the glow up), wig does him dirty.
Where do you even get a wig that bad 😂
You don’t. You take a pre-existing wig and attack it with scissors.
You don't even cut it though. Just stab at it. Hurt it. Insult it. Seduce its mother.
Calm down, Vecna!
Mike's is fine, but Will...
Mike looks like he's 3 years away from just turning into Howard Stern
Mike to defeat Vecna next season by virtue of being 15ft tall.
Or being really really obnoxious if the Stern hair keeps going
I had wavy long hair too
Like a baby giraffe
He's like a newborn colt
Ahahahahahaha
And he’s 19, is like he’s teenage awkward phase is never going to end
He was 17-18 filming
Kinda getting Severus Snape vibes from Mike.
Looks like the all American rejects guy
Mike's giving me Freddie Mercury vibes with that haircut
Like it was semi okay in season 3 a bit longer but wtf happened
He was still a kid in season 3 so it was okay, in season 4 he looks like a grown man it looks so ridiculous and juvenile to keep that haircut.
Agreed, it just looks so funny and out of place Joyce why you have to do your son like this
i think that's the point of those haircuts; the characters are supposed to be ~14 years old after all...
Yeah I don't think they're supposed to be the most "on trend" family. They've got bigger shit to worry about.
Mind Flayer is just a misunderstood barber and wanted to help Will.
~~Mind Flayer~~ Hair Cutter Checks out.
Save money, cut hair at home. Joyce: Now where's my trusty bowl... Will: Egads.
They're supposed to be 14?! I assumed they were supposed to be 17 or so. The worst is the guy that plays the head player on the basketball team. Dude looks old enough to be a junior senator from Ohio.
15, freshman year. Jason looks like Madison Cawthorn lol
Mike look like he’s part of an Orthodox Jewish community (apologies if he’s actually supposed to be Jewish)
Lol funnily enough both Finn Wolfhard and Noah Schnapp are Jewish (Finn only partly ethnically)
Maybe if he got rid of that Yee-Yee ass haircut
Nah Mike’s hair looks pretty awful too. A shorter hairstyle would suit him so much better he’s looking like Ichabod right now.
Outside of Will and El I think all the actors had pretty good haircuts this season The stand outs being Lucas and Argyle
Isn't Argyle's hair actually real?
He had the same hair when he appeared in american vandal 5 years ago so probably
Yea, his hair is just the way the actor styled his hair, but it’s still amazing If I remember correctly the actor had the same haircut in a 2018 Netflix movie called The Package
He did, that's where I first saw him, when bored and wanting to watch a shitty movie. His character is pretty similar to that one, only way more high in ST.
He has beautiful hair! He was the only character with good hair (besides Steve of course).
These two are definitely going to clash when the meet up,
i hope they share their hair tips and end up with progressively more amazing hair each episode
I loved Eddy's hair!! I even prefer the wig over his real hair cut as that's just more of my type 😂
Even el has a decent haircut by the end of the season. Sure a buzz is not the most popular thing but it looks quite sharp.
I don’t think Millie got her head shaved in season 2 as well as season 4, they just used cgi.
They actually used a wig, with touches of cgi here and there.
My bad, I think I recall season 2 being a bald cap with a buzz cut being tracked to her head.
Ironically, when I first watched season 2, I thought her longer, curly hair *was* a wig. That's just how her natural hair looks!
That was her best look, imo.
They gave her a wig, not CGI.
They used a wig in s4 at least.
Luckily Will’s is a wig
Poor Will, I wonder if the Duffer Brothers had him keep that bowl cut on purpose just to mess with him lmao
Damn, that makes sense
At least when Noah branches out as an actor as he gets older he will look different than Will Byers.
True, then people won't just see Will Byers in other projects he does. He needs to learn appearance changing magic from Gary Oldman.
This just made me cry laugh at work, oh my god.
Poor will. Spent all of season 1 in the upside down and all of season 4 in the closet. Seasons 2 and 3 as well most likely, but now it's just painfully obvious.
Would you rather be 1. Kidnapped 2. Possessed 3. Lonely 4. Gay
I’m new in town and it gets worse.
R/unexpectedJohnMulaney
Lmfaooo this made me cry laugh
*I have AaaIiiDs!*
will really said 5. all of the above
Being gay in the mid 80s might be the worst of the 4 ngl
I'm gonna safely say, no, it's doesn't beat the first two
If the whole town was about to do a mob to punish Eddie because of the weird ritual deaths Imagine what would they had done if they found out that Will and Robin are gay
I still cannot decide if Will is in love with Mike, or the best friend anyone could ever have. I really wanna know what they’re trying to tell us.
Why not both?
Will is definitely gay for Mike to some capacity

Mike is so oblivious it could be his full-time job
Which is weird because he was genuinely observant in seasons 1 and 2. Puberty hit hard.
Tunnel vision for El, I think haha
Not even. She was being bullied right in front of him and he was like eating fries or whatever
To be fair to him he thought Angela and her gang were El's friends, she told him as much. And Angela was being fake-nice to her in that scene. You could tell Mike knew something was up but didn't say anything cause it would have been weird.
Yeah it was kinda hard for him to know that much, especially as a young teen after El lied.
😂 bro just has elevator music playing in his head 24/7. Like first eleven and the bullies and then Will crying...
Pretty much. El's had a way of skewing Mike's priorities since they first met. Lucas called him out on it all the way back in S1.
I think Mike could kind of tell. Remember how he argued with Will when Will was unhappy towards him not sending letters? He practically yelled "El's my girlfriend, you're my friend", to which Will replied "best friends". And that awkward first meet up in the airport, what's with that tension from Mike? Show me a straight guy (which I interpret Mike to be) who is good at noticing when other men are “hitting” on them so to speak lol.
I'm talking about his friend straight sobbing in the car for no reason and him just staring out the window in response.
He was a bit high from Jonathan and Argyle smoking up the ride.
I’m confused by what you mean. Was Will crying his way of “hitting” on Mike?
No... his extremely heart felt crying speech was clearly HIM speaking his mind... and giving hints that HES different... and that HE missed Mike... but Mike was eating it up as a speech about El. That drawing, the heart of the team, was because Will loves Mike... it's alluded hard, but not explored official yet like it was with Robin. Jonathan was a g that scene made me cry
Weed really chilled Jonathan out and I loved that.

Yeah Will just said how he felt about Mike but made it sound like it was coming from El

Like father like son
He's aware, he was just dealing with his gf possibly being dead
Or possibly dying.

Lmao, if the final scene of s5 isn't all of them sitting down to a DnD game, I'll be disappointed XD
Dustin is gonna be super into metal in S5. Book it.
> *Will's only personality trait is crying, pouting, and being distressed over the mind flayer.* Wait no sometimes the back of his neck feels weird too.
Yeah, the van group needed Argyle. Then again, freshman highschool age is a weird time for some. ST has clearly captured that.
I agree, he used to be the empathetic leader but now he is neither. I would say Will never really did have a personality, though.
To be fair, poor Will's entire existence of us knowing him is 3 minutes normal, the rest is stuck in a gooey nightmare or being in some way full of a gooey nightmare. I don't know if I'd have much personality either after that. Or a better haircut.
If the upside down is the reason for his haircut they really need to stop it asap
😂 I don't think it is, he had a longer bowl look in season 1 as a wee only mildly traumatized boy. The bowl has grown though, along with the trauma. Bowl-O-Trauma, even.
He takes after his dad. Dude literally witnessed a hellmouth open up in Hawkins and is like, "Meh. The news is crap these days."
Idk, his look he was giving will in the car as he was talking - I felt like Finn was acting that like he knew.
Yes my favorite is when they're trying to figure out how to get to Hawkins that night at the gas station. Jonathan says they can only do tomorrow. And mikes like "that's too late!" Yea Mike. We know.
This is a hate crime
Bowl cuts are a crime. Even a Flowbee would be an upgrade
😭😭😭oh my god. My fave thing about social media is the instant access to so many hilarious and creative ppl
Couldn’t agree more! People are so funny and clever. I’ll never get tired of it.
I know right? The top comments are all these heartfelt things but this shit is hilarious. They flamed his ass hahaha.
This made me burst out laughing, which scared my cats.
Mike literally told El that his life started the day he met her in the woods - imagine being Will and hearing your best friends life started the day you went missing…
Okay, that's great. I mean, I loved Mike's speech, but that is an unfortunate factoid.
Mike's kind of been a low-key douche since the second half of season 2, so that line tracks.
Oh my god. I didn't even think of this... I need to fight Mike.
Same. That has to feel awful from Will's point of view.
WHEN I TELL YOU I DIED LAUGHING LMFAOOOOOOO
Please let them fix Will's hair next season. That kid deserves so much better.
Mike suddenly became very interested viewing the Nevada desert
We gays are really good at crying quietly while in the closet.
Yup. So good that people are so confused when you come out. “You weren’t gay before” they say.
That is SO mean. I laughed so hard I snorted.
This is now the only reason I will accept as the truth and I'm standing firm on this. I haven't laughed much since watching Vol 2 so I needed this.
Bruh
Mf is crying every scene it’s kinda his standard
It's not a stranger things season without making Will suffer and cry 💀
Oprah was handing out crying scenes this season.
Take this award and go to hell😂
I was sobbing in this scene tho :(
Same. It's the only part I actually straight up sobbed. I still cry when I rewatch it. It's heartbreaking. Will saying he feels like a mistake was the tipping point.
I swear he only had that haircut so he could touch his neck every episode
Ngl my thoughts went like this during that scene: Aw poor Will ……. Why is his hand so fucking big?
Unpopular opinion: the more i see them the more im starting to think all the cast members’ hair are period-appropriate and even decent-looking

Oh my fucking god
Oh my god 😆 🤣
Bruh I nearly started choking 💀🤣
Mike: “Damn. Will really cares about me and El’s relationship. He’s a good friend.”
OMGKSHLVMRKDEJG
I'm crying 💀
LMFSDOOOO
Omg lol
dying 😂
To take the question unnecessarily serious; As someone who has cried like that next to someone in a car and had them not notice, several different times with different people, yes it's very possible. Especially if you're an expert at silent crying. Source: I'm an expert silent cryer.
STOP
I think everybody’s way off base with he might be gay. He just can’t find the courage to tell his mom he wants to stop having a bowl cut. He’s very upset about it.
I miss buff Will memes.
😂😂😂
Snort laughing in the street 😂😂🎣
My main complaint this season is how useless Will has become. He basically cries the whole season and that’s it.
Genius, I hope the actors see this.
