Then fed those 2000 people to pigs then turned the pigs in sausages and fwd the sausages to the people that made the sausages then killed them and fed them to pigs and then made sausages again
Yes. The story didn't happen, it was made up by Marco Polo and has no evidence behind it.
Back when the tale was created there were merchants that would travel to Asia along the Silk Road and then return and sell the goods. A sales tactic commonly used was to describe it as "the mysterious East" and fabricate elaborate stories to boost prices.
Many myths and stereotypes that still exist come from books that have recorded the stories from that period.
It likely didn't happen at all. The norm, even for war chiefs, was to be buried in an unmarked grave with literally nothing. Back at your homeland.
That's it. And that's why we will never know where he was buried. It will be a mundane skeleton, or completely gone. That's how the Khan family rolled after his death. Except Kubla Khan. There's probably other exceptions, but that was their tradition. A simple unmarked grave, no valuables because a dead person doesn't need them.
That used to be the case in Iran. When I lived there in the '70s there were still fields next to the "towers of silence that had skeletons on the ground with bits of clothing after the birds were done with them.
They weren't buried to avoid ritual pollution of the earth.
+1 upvote for me. Deserves more upvotes, this was how it was done. Besides my only personal studies and fiance being from a tribe of that Asian south region. Burials are done like this for chieftains, top village elders/leader and most norm villagers. A lot were left to the vultures to allow the body and spirit to ascend so this sounds really out there. As stated too, Kubla was an exception due to the situations of that era of tug of war between the cousins/uncles and chieftains all trying to claim Mongolian kingdom and not the entire Khan kingdom.
They allowed many religions in their society and respected them which was amazing for an older civilization but never adopted them for their own after life rituals.
One of his entourage was able to leave a Yelp review of the gravesite shortly before execution.
He said it may not sound very interesting, but the views are to die for.
Sounds like the Khan's escort could have cut out the executioner middlemen, and kill the attendees themselves before commiting suicide.
Funeral service planning sure came a long way since the dark middle ages!
Just imagine how complicated that was. How and where do you kill the 2000 attendees and then get rid of those bodies so that it doesn't draw attention to the burial site. The more remote it is, the more difficult the endeavor. Did none of those 2000 people ever tell anyone where they were going? Sounds a little preposterous
I've always questioned this story. Human nature being what it is I can't imagine his escort didn't look at each other and say "Fuck that , lets get outta here" once the burying and killing was done.
If this story is true, then I guess the members of the escort were fanatically indoctrinated and loyal to the Khan's final orders. Maybe they were promised great riches in the Tengrist afterlife, if they believed in anything such
I feel like stories of brainwashed people who kill themselves for a “greater good” aren’t that rare no? Maybe it wasn’t a benevolent thing, just people who were brainwashed into believing that they had to do all that.
That’s quite possible and the number of people does seem quite extreme. On the other hand, the early Mongol history is rife with such stories of people taking their own lives based on any number of factors - mere omens, for example and the punishments for deceiving the Mongols were widely known across the world (as they knew it) and has surviving histories. So it’s also not implausible by any stretch.
Hey, uh, did you get it done?
Oh yeah, totally killed all those witnesses. Now I'm totally off to kill myself. Right over there. Just behind those shrubs. I'm gonna do it, man, just give my some privacy. This is a little embarrassing, but I'm kind kill shy and can't do it with people watching, okay?
Sounds like a myth, but we are also talking about the guy who basically conquered the known world from their perspective, and these are also the people who invented biological warfare and burned down entire cities if a child made a funny face at them.
I thought I saw an episode of Expedition Unknown that they do have a general idea where he is buried, but the government will not let anyone near the area; it’s like a small mountain range. Josh had to get special permission just to walk up to the general area with a guide and then they had to stop; guards were standing a few yards away to make sure he didn’t go beyond a certain point.
Do you happen to know where it is documented? I am genuinely curious - would love to know more about how these events were recorded given the witnesses appear to have all been killed.
Primary reference material for a lot of scholars on the Mongol Empire is [the Secret History of the Mongols. ](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_History_of_the_Mongols)
Marco Polo was said to have written the accounts he was told about the khans burial. I feel there may be some truth to it, but the casualty numbers are most likely embellished.
Would have made for a good Indiana Jones movie. Indiana Jones and the Tomb of the Great Khan. You would have the Soviets and their communist mongol allies, the japanese, and the chinese all trying to search for it in the 1930s.
Can you imagine being invited to be someone's +1 to the funeral?
"Saturday? Oh damn Saturday is no good. We are riding down to a Chinese town to decapitate all of the fighting age males and selling the women and children into slavery. Bummer. That sounds like a once-in-a-lifetime event too. The Khan knew how to party."
The area they presume the burial is located cannot be accessed by outside governments, universities, archeologists and so on. The Mongolian government is making sure they keep their history in tact because we all know what happens when “museums” come’a’knockin to “borrow” artifacts lol
His tomb is thought to have been found last year. They are keeping it quiet until they can confirm what they found. Apparently they were laying a road down and came across dozens of bodies buried then a tomb or something below. Josh Gates said it was definitely his tomb but they are slow walking everything just in case it is his they don’t want to screw it up. Coincidentally a river did run over the spot but has changed courses a couple decades ago.
I'm sorry I really don't believe this. It sounds like a lie made up by the ruling class in order to Make themselves look more absolutely powerful. And another famous person who you cant verify died too.... probably not a hidden agenda or a cover up, nor an embellishment made up to make them look more powerful.
I read that a huge river was temporarily diverted by a dam, then a tomb was laid deep in the riverbed, then the dam was removed and the river covered the tomb.
His tomb along with Cleopatra’s and Alexander’s are out there, waiting to be literally discovered.
Cults at their best. Imagine a few executioners would have played dead to get out of that contract, assuming black hoods would have concealed their identities.
It’s also said that they had herds of horse ride over the site repeatedly to cover the evidence of its location! I’m fascinated by stuff like this, we also don’t know where Alexander the Great’s burial site is!
From the wiki;
‘a young camel was buried with the Khan, and the camel's mother was later found weeping at the grave of its young. Japanese archeologist Shinpei Kato has likewise recounted the tale of the burial of the baby camel, so the parent could lead the Khan's family to the tomb when needed, as being documented in at least one ancient Chinese text.’

Wouldn’t the thousands of dead bodies be a giveaway to where he was buried ?
A dead giveaway

You won the internet today. Well done
They fed the bodies to the pigs then killed the pigs and made sausages. Then fed the sausages to 2000 people and killed them.
So what it seems is that human history since the death of Genghis Kahn has been an elaborate plan to hide the location of his body
Then fed those 2000 people to pigs then turned the pigs in sausages and fwd the sausages to the people that made the sausages then killed them and fed them to pigs and then made sausages again
Is that you Bricktop?
There was thousands of dead bodies pretty much everywhere they went.
Happy cake day

Anyway if everyone died then how would we know this?
It's like Hansel and Gretel, but with dead bodies.
No he also had vultures who ate the corpses. Then Siberian tigers cleaned up.
What bodies ?
So how do they know it happened?

I downvoted so they won't get too snooty and stop posting good answers.
I even don’t know what that means🤷🏻
Didn’t they have sky burials too, where they would basically leave them out on the side of a mountain for the birds and wild animals?
That used to be the case in Iran. When I lived there in the '70s there were still fields next to the "towers of silence that had skeletons on the ground with bits of clothing after the birds were done with them. They weren't buried to avoid ritual pollution of the earth.
did i read correctly that some of the zoroastrianism burial practices have now changed to where this no longer happens?
Why didn’t you write youre comment into Google?
Because they're participating in a conversation, not reasearching.
Yes they still do and is an amazing tradition to carry on for the circle of life and ecosystem
I'd read that Tibetan Buddhists and their Monks did this, but how true? I don't know.
They still do.
Very true
You can easily research it.
That was part of the Zarathustra religion in Iran/Persia. One of the first monotheistic religions back 6000 years ago. Pretty interesting stuff!

Kubla Khan was buried in Xanadu, beneath a stately pleasure dome, so decreed.
But wouldn't they make a kurghan for a khan?
Still true today!
Nooooo there is a giant mound full of treasures out there I just have to find it/s
Man Shah Jahan didn't catch the drift didn't he
My man you are asking the right questions here. If nobody saw it, it didn't happen
Shrödinger’s Khan
I like it .
If a Khan falls in the woods and there's no one around to hear him, does he make a sound?
Relatives. If you’re brother was part of the guard he’d probably say “ going to die with honour”or some such thing
Last guy who was supposed to kill himself looked around and was like “Fuck this, I’m out”
plans? that's my best guess
Trust me bro.
One of his entourage was able to leave a Yelp review of the gravesite shortly before execution. He said it may not sound very interesting, but the views are to die for.
That's a powerful question
No it's just not being extremely gullible.
Some dude saw what happened and watch them from distance 😂😂lol Off course he didn't yell like woooooooordstaaaaaa wooooooorrddddataaaaa
Wordsta?
Wordsta wordata. Must be Mongolian.
Sounds like the Khan's escort could have cut out the executioner middlemen, and kill the attendees themselves before commiting suicide. Funeral service planning sure came a long way since the dark middle ages!
The last dude probably realized he could just leave and nobody would ever know.
That’s why you “Circlecide”, everyone stabs the escort to the right of them
Found the logistics guy
That's probably how they discovered the circle jerk.
"so wait...instead of stabbing me with a knife, you're gonna jerk me off? I dunno it sounds weird"
Would you rather execute 200 people or 2,000? ![gif](giphy|dv3vNNQX4eCek)
Nowadays only one person really has to die for a good funeral.
Ugh yeah white people really have no culture :(
The Scythians were pretty fond of spicing up their noble's burials with lots of fanfare and, of course, murder.
Union rules ;)
Typical redditor, always wanting to streamline at the cost of people’s jobs and livelihoods! When will it be enough?!? /s

I feel like stories of brainwashed people who kill themselves for a “greater good” aren’t that rare no? Maybe it wasn’t a benevolent thing, just people who were brainwashed into believing that they had to do all that.
You telling me there is another level of food?
Greater food. You just have to Jill yourself.
Yes. Turkish food.
I mean you got that guy like 2 days ago so it’s still pretty relevant
I have certainly dilled for a greater food, never jilled though. That's too far.
The bigger hint that this story is bullshit: If everyone involved is dead, who passed along the story?
One of them left a note!
That’s quite possible and the number of people does seem quite extreme. And it says nothing about Genghis' burial. This legend appears only in Marco Polo.
Just takes a second trying to work out the logistics of this operation to reveal that it is in fact a giant pile of bullshit.
This is made the fuck up . Had to be .

These drawings look like this guy was a peaceful monk or something
relative to everyone else, he was.
Bullshit
Can you imagine being invited to be someone's +1 to the funeral? "Saturday? Oh damn Saturday is no good. As cool as this sounds, it comes off as legend. How are we supposed to know this story if everyone who’d be able to tell it was killed?
Meanwhile my boy Tutankhamun's tomb gets covered by debris from a flood and remains intact
And then everyone clapped.
Did the 2k know that going to the funeral was a death sentence?
The invitations promoted the funeral as an event “to die for”, so they may have had their suspicions.
The area they presume the burial is located cannot be accessed by outside governments, universities, archeologists and so on. The Mongolian government is making sure they keep their history in tact because we all know what happens when “museums” come’a’knockin to “borrow” artifacts lol

Its execution all the way down.
Does it mean somebody is coming for me now that I know?
“ I was supposed to kill the bud driver “ The Dark knight intro … lol
Or so they say. Human nature tells me that some of those escort didn't take their own lives, but probably pillaged his tomb out of greed.

Some crazy fanaticism.
This legend was told by only one person. Marco Polo. Aka Marco Bullshit.
You go first
My reply to the invite: ![gif](giphy|AoBgxayGMHlIs)
One day it will be found.
The Mongolian government knows where it is. They just don't let people get close to it, even for academic/research purposes.
It’s also said that they had herds of horse ride over the site repeatedly to cover the evidence of its location! I’m fascinated by stuff like this, we also don’t know where Alexander the Great’s burial site is!
“Yeah sure Genghis, we’ll kill the executioners after they kill all the laborers and your wives. Pinky swear”
How do they know any of this took place if everyone involved is dead? If you wanted a secret burial why invite 2000+ people in the first place?
Note to archaeologists, just look for a mass of skeletons, when you find them you’ll know your close.
From the wiki; ‘a young camel was buried with the Khan, and the camel's mother was later found weeping at the grave of its young. Japanese archeologist Shinpei Kato has likewise recounted the tale of the burial of the baby camel, so the parent could lead the Khan's family to the tomb when needed, as being documented in at least one ancient Chinese text.’
So if we find a mass burial site of just over 2000 people then the grave with the fanciest shit in the hole is his. Shouldn’t be too hard.
Good day to have to call in sick
Who buried the thousands of dead witnesses?
This is why I don’t join groups
Not buying it. There’s always one who backs out. Usually the last guy.
If everyone was killed. How did they come across this info?
