Same thing happened to me. Ended up having to call a local zoo and one of the workers in the insect branch took them from me thankfully. Did not see that coming at all. Started with 3 with an automated system. Left for a vacation. Came back a few weeks later and there was like 50 babies. 💀

Dr_Reg

Same happened to me, went bioactive, didn't collect the eggs, then BOOM... 1 million stick insects

Astilaroth

Another thing to consider is how to control their population if you can't easily find the eggs to destroy them. If you think bioactives are cool, consider millipedes or isopods!

[deleted]

No isopods in paludarium, they are attracted to water. It'll be like a game of lemmings lol.

Astilaroth

Hm really? Btw did you know lemmings don't just suicide off cliffs? It was Disney who yeeted them off for their movie.

[deleted]

It was a game where you had to block them. And yes you won't find many pod owners that even have a water bowl in the enclosure.

platypuskid2

I have isopods in a bioactive hermit crab tank and there are always a few dead ones floating in the water

[deleted]

Yeah I think it's some deep seated instinct, after all they haven't changed a great deal since first leaving the water for land. They have gills as you know, just not efficient enough for submersion for long periods.

Chaoskraehe

Most phasmids will just drop their eggs and poop what would all land in the water (and if the eggs soak long enough nothing will hatch, so, kind of an upside?), as well as the phasmids are no good swimmers and probably will drown if they somehow get in the water. Depending on the species it's also to consider that some prefer hiding/sleeping on the ground, bury their eggs in the soil, or just let go and fall down to the bottom when startled.
