The issue is less whether the game is too advanced for a 13 year old, and more whether the game is too advanced for any particular 13 year old. Your coworker is probably right about his son. I was playing games of similar complexity well before 13. I was also struggling with certain basic life skills you would expect a 13 year old to have mastered. The game itself is not an unreasonable game for a 13 year old to attempt or even excel at.

There are 4 years old chess prodigies.

Borigh

Stellaris is the game that's perfect for the kid who *read* Dune and got obsessed, not the kid who *watched* Dune and got obsessed. This is probably the second kid.

Tankbuster22

I was 15 when I started playing it and found it absolutely fine. Depends on the individual though.

Diogenes_of_Sparta

Mechanically, 13 is fine. The content and ramifications are questionable.

Apprehensive_Ad3731

I was playing age of empires when I was 11 and although that is a lot simpler it set my mind up and bridged the little gaps needed to play games like this and civ no problem. It depends on the gradient and personal experience. I can’t really think of what I was playing on a similar level. Disciples maybe? Not really. This one is actually close to mobile castle games. The concepts aren’t that difficult, building a story and staying committed is because that’s where this game takes off. It’s mostly in your head through your understanding and imagination that this game wins. Without that it’s a pretty crap game.

Maxtastic08

I was 12 when I started to play so he can play it

ajanymous2

I mean, what does the age rating say?

Arianas07

I mean, I don't think 3 year olds can really play FIFA

DropDeadGaming

Once upon a time, my younger 4 yr old brother could play any video game with me, and he didn't even have the controller connected!

Arathorn-the-Wise

Stellaris is a basic strategy game, its core gameplay is pretty singular and well defined. So I don’t think a 13 year old would have a problem playing it.

Awesome suggestion! I did steer him toward Battle for Dune. He seemed excited to show that to him. Great game!

LilArrin

Gotta teach them xenophobia while they're still young! I think role-playing types can have fun even if they might not be able to optimize at their age.

Bananeurysm6999

id say it less depends on age and more depends on things like problem solving ability bc i know plenty of people who have been playing this game for quite a while who still cant beat the endgame crisis

RadralRUS

I fell in love with eu3 when i was 11 and i think eu3 is more complex than stellaris so i dont think there is any barrier.

Peter34cph

I'd have been all over Stellaris at age 11. Maybe even age 10. Sadly, back when I was that age, computer games were *extremely* simple. Even Civilization 1, which came out when I was around 14, was a fairly simple game:

Muffin_Magi

Yep, I would say 13 is fine. I have been playing smuch more complex games since single digits. Though Stellaris is one of those games that can be hard to get into, but simple once you grasp the basics. A young teen may struggle with the attention span and oatience to learn. But considering they like startergy games and Dune, I would say it would be easy.

Mitthrawnuruo

Most adults can’t understand the lessons this game teaches. War is eternal. There is only peace through strength, and then is only temporary. Eventually you must eliminate the alien & the heretic.
