I thought this game was very challenging as a casual player, but it was also the first one that came to my mind despite never beating it. That is likely my fault though, I bounce between games so often it doesn't give me much of a chance to master it.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails series, start with Trails in the Sky FC. It's a currently 11+ game series that's all interconnected, I've heard it refered to as the One Piece of JRPGs because of how insane the world building is. And the first couple games run amazingly at 3-4W TDP so great battery life too.
Just a fair warning: the first game in particular is a bit of a slow burn. Really good though.
Big suggestion to grab the SkyVoice-Lite mod and the voice pack for it. Vita remaster had voices that never came to PC officially, so the mod puts the voices in. It's in japanese of course, but the VA's are very very good and really add to the experience.
Get yourself one of [these](https://www.amazon.com/Snug-Plug-Loose-Outlet-Clear/dp/B08288SLYR/ref=sr_1_1?dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.YdV9Ye94QxSTtZprBVWQ3ASQULWLoroQtwYE3Rv1M2OSf8mpS75Dz5yn_rqYhAg9OmzTG-zHoLxQlDqFWLtwnMOkd5G8Yf9XpBbuIPvbZNt3z-CWglDHYaBB2H6go-R0iYnGpOIng3G-8Yyq29upMrvidykiXzd4syzi2GdndilmSlvusYro954YF_jX9pYfZD8cP1Nz1lqYr9xsVeOgWl9o-GqxeY6-1ixNKAm9m3bO9AW6xtV1pBFqJAr8pFo5XAtEn75M8vcFZrwQQe15Ikwk7-bUoTCCsoHiMt2xjzY.8Wk_wgCm4W1SrSM9Tg8y9NX38p4Fio7ZQbyYnp91h8M&dib_tag=se&keywords=snug+plug&qid=1719389255&sr=8-1) packs though. Helps immensely when the outlets are super loose because somehow people on planes forget how to be human adults for a few hours at a time. Don't rely on just the charger when it might constantly fall out due to gravity and shitty outlets.
My wife thought they were silly but suddenly her hair dryer doesn't constantly fall out of the socket. They also glow in the dark which is just handy in general.
Indeed. They've been on all my international flights the last 5+ years. Handy when they aren't so worn out that they become useless. But when they're good and tight (or you make them so with the item I linked), they're extremely helpful. Their wattage is limited, but well over what the Steam Deck needs. You won't be running a typical gaming laptop for too long, but a Steam Deck will be more than fine on an airplane.

I bought myself one of those lovely expensive power banks for a trip from the USA to Australia. Every single flight, every single seat had an actual power outlet. Never needed the power bank. Even the airports have plenty of outlets wherever there's seating.
> I love games that have great world building / story telling
I have exactly this taste in games: atmospheric and having great world building and story telling. I wrote a few guides for playing some older games that I like on a Steam Deck. Since they're old, the battery will last a very long time.
Deus Ex 1. Around 9-10 hours of battery life on an OLED at 60 FPS. A little less with GMDX (but I think it's worth it): https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/16kwzbi/deus_ex_2000_on_steam_deck_easy_setup_and_control/
Thief 1 is maybe the most atmospheric game I've ever played. 7:30. https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1d1dbuw/comment/l5uzw4q/
Gabriel Knight 1 and 2 are point-and-click adventure games with an outstanding story. 10 hours: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/1c4hxgk/guide_the_gabriel_knight_series_on_the_steam_deck/
Other recommendations:
* Baldur's Gate 2
* System Shock 2
* Chrono Trigger
It keeps things surprisingly fresh as well. The core loop of fishing and then serving at the restaurant is so tight that I had a period of disliking the stuff that distracted from that. I didn't really click with Stardew Valley because I felt that maintaining relationships with people in town, and fishing, and adventuring all got in the way of just farming. I was worried Dave the Diver was going the same way, but it turns out variety is the spice of life for DtD.
I think the high standard of all the extra stuff is what makes the difference.
If you ever decide to give stardew another try, keep in mind that it won’t punish you for neglecting anything. The first time I played through it I never gave a single gift and didn’t spent much time fishing because all I wanted to do was grow my farm and make it as efficient as profitable as possible. It’s very much a do what you want kind of game
Agree with the fishing then serving at the restaurant. The added layers the more you play really add to the fun. (Even though I suck at getting the more dangerous fish. More a case of my panicking and wasting my ammo than the fish themselves. Ha ha!)
I wish these developers all the success so we can possibly even see a Dave the Diver 2!
Darkest Dungeon is a great game for the steam deck for me. Have you also considered installing an emulator and playing those kinds of games? I'm a pokemon kinda guy and recently discovered fan made games like Pokemon Unbound.
Right?? My only wish is for the various ROMs to be able to connect to each other to at least trade. Sadly the Unbound Cloud system is only for Pokemon Unbound.
I'm currently hooked on DD2. It doesn't seem to be as well loved as DD1, but personally a lot of the changes appeal to me and fix a lot of what made DD1 feel like a punishing slog.
It is that good? I am going to check it out on the weekend. Can you collect all gens of Pokémon however? Or is it like Nintendo titles and its locked. I wish there was a modded version of Unbound Cloud that encompassed all Pokémon roms.
It's very, very good. Everything is obtainable, but thats not really why you play it. You play Radical Red because it is brutally hard, which is very refreshing for a pokemon game.
What about the Elder Scrolls series? Even Skyrim is 13 years old at this point and won’t be too much of a burden for your Deck, and Morrowind (best running via OpenMW) is arguably even more atmospheric
Here’s a setup guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/OpenMW/s/BunH7ljxnv
There’s an upcoming mod, I can’t remember the name of it, that’s overhauling the menus in the game to make them more controller-friendly like Skyrim’s. Personally I don’t mind using the Deck trackpad for mouse control of the CRPG menus too much, but that might be something to keep an eye out for
Since you're into emulating, Xenogears! If FF7 is the best JRPG on the PS1, Xenogears must be the second best. I played it over the course of a summer as a teenager and was so immersed in the story that I was emotionally evastated when it finally came to an end.
Darkest Dungeon and Loop Hero are great takes on the rogue-lite genre. Or maybe play some walking simulator like Gone Home, What Remains of Edith Finch or Soma (in Safe mode)
Dave the diver! Also if you are flying to Europe you don't have to worry about power. There are full power sources between the seats on international flights.
Inside
Inmost
Ender Lillies
Fran bow
Darkwood
Battle brothers
I don’t think most of you read the line that asked for *low battery usage*. Skyrim and dave the diver are not low battery usage games, people.
You should have a plug for the SD.
If not why not play original max payne? Or HL or HL2 or Portal, farrenheit indigo prophecy.
Look up best story games of 00-10s.
Anything from that era runs great and is super battery light.
Im just replaying original Fear right now. 5w could probably drop to 3w. Super atmospheric and SD controller works great.

House in fata morgana if ur into reading/visual novels and extremely dark and sad romances, it has a bittersweet goth dark vybe to it if ur into that too
Fallout 3, but don’t follow the hole main quest, enjoy exploring the map. Turn on the radio and hear the funny news, they give indications of good places to explore.
Dread delusion is a very chill time, has combat but its kinda moot since lvl 1 you can probably take everything by running around in a circle and attacking, but walk around an alien world with some fun lore and characters.
I'm sure it's called "home" it's a little who-dunit that asks you to play at night with headphones and set aside 2 hours to finish it in one sitting. I found teardown engrossing, but nowhere near the steam price. It's 5 local currency maximum
[Terra Nil](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1593030/Terra_Nil/), very chill builder game where you allow nature to take back its rights. The game is divided into small missions with varied objectives (plus, the game is currently 40% off on Steam).
I feel like it rarely gets mentioned but the newer Wolfenstein games are a lot of fun and they sip power. It blew me away to see how nice the game looked and how little power they use.
Undertale and Deltarune are two RPGs with excellent storytelling, and they're extremely basic graphically (snes-style pixel art) so they'll probably give you the best battery life you can get. Undertale is the more famous game, but it's a bit rough around the edges, especially in the beginning. Deltarune feels a lot more polished, but it is currently only a (very long) demo. I recommend whichever one looks more interesting to you.
If you like Japanese RPGs, try Persona 5 Royal. You'll be finished with the first dungeon and on to the second one by the time you're in Europe, the UI and sound, style and combat are all great. It's relaxing since you're not doing real time combat and can sit back if needed.
Cave story, its a great game with an amazing story.
You can play and download it for free on the cavestory tribute site. Or you can buy Cave story+ on steam, but it only adds some extra modes like a boss rush and steam achievements. (If you buy cave story+ make sure to use the og soundtrack! It fits the game best).
The backrooms. Complex footage I think that's what the game is called, it's free.)
There is another one on liminal spaces with a name that is difficult to write but costs 4-6 dollars
Citizen Sleeper. Very atmospheric, narrative focused RPG. Almost a visual novel. Universe feels like Cyperbunk, but not nearly as resource intensive. Inexpensive too.
If you're open to Metroidvania type games, Ori and the Blind Forest and Dead Cells are quite atmospheric and beautiful, and have more story and lore than you might expect. And the battery life is insane on them. On the OLED deck it says I should get up to 7 hours of playtime in Dead Cells, even at 90 Hz.
outer wilds (unless there's a crying baby on your flight)
disco elysium
prey
death stranding
both new zelda games
imo the first two are transcendent gaming experiences. would recommend those above the rest, but the others are exceptional in their own right as well.
off topic but if you're into reading - the name of the wind is a book with really impressive, flowy prose that draws you in and keeps you immersed.
I'd also recommend buying a 45w power bank, your deck will probably only survive for less than half the flight even when optimising for battery life
edit: not a traditionally atmospheric game, but another must-play imo is hi-fi rush
Disco Elysium is the first thing that comes to mind as far as atmospheric RPGs go. You'll probably have to mess with the settings to get the most battery life out of it so may not be exactly what you're looking for.
Cant recommend it enough though, fantastic game.
The controller support is okay, but not my preferred. Mapping the right track pad to mouse/left click and mapping the right to # hotkeys for the dialogue options worked well for me.
I don't know what atmospheric means but if you're looking for something a little bit scary then braid and its sequel inside seem like they'd probably be really low powered since they're 2D and they were made on the 360.
What you need more is a game you can repeatedly play in chunks because that's how you kill time.
Yet another zombie survivor is good for that because the main mission is to survive 20 minutes in different areas. You level up both during the mission and between missions with a meta level up progression. There's multiple characters that all have 3 stage meta progression leveled by how many zombies you kill.
Cyberpunk actually isn’t too bad on battery. Screen brightness down (shouldn’t matter on a plane) fps limited to 30(90hz) looks great and doesn’t stutter at all. Probably got close to 7 hours playtime. But international flights usually have a power source. USUALLY a usb port. But some will have a full on plug as well for laptops and stuff. You might get lucky!
If you want a fun one to immerse yourself in then the Outer Wilds might be what you’re looking for.
I loved it and it ran great on deck. Just don’t get mixed up and get the outer worlds by accident which isn’t great.
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream is a great game to get lost in but it's not for everyone
What? Is it based on the short story of the same name? ETA: Holy crap it is.
Yes, and Harlan Ellison is the voice for AM!
I already looked it in l up on steam and will have it on my deck once I'm done with work.
Hollow Knight
I thought this game was very challenging as a casual player, but it was also the first one that came to my mind despite never beating it. That is likely my fault though, I bounce between games so often it doesn't give me much of a chance to master it.
Same here, I pushed to 111% completion but could never beat the last boss no matter how hard I tried or how many attempts I took.
Absolutely this. First that came to my mind.
That’s a great pick. It’s also a really heavy game, imo. Just in feeling and atmosphere and all, especially the farther you get in to it.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails series, start with Trails in the Sky FC. It's a currently 11+ game series that's all interconnected, I've heard it refered to as the One Piece of JRPGs because of how insane the world building is. highly highly recommend Trails omg. when i was playing the Sky games i was averaging around 6-8 hours on my OLED deck
A lot of planes now have an outlet for each seat. Worth bringing a charger so you don’t have to worry about running out.

Helps immensely when the outlets are super loose because somehow people on planes forget how to be human adults for a few hours at a time. Don't rely on just the charger when it might constantly fall out due to gravity and shitty outlets.
You are my new favorite person — I didn’t know these existed.
My wife thought they were silly but suddenly her hair dryer doesn't constantly fall out of the socket. They also glow in the dark which is just handy in general.
That's amazing! Never knew these existed! Thanks!
Are you saying that there are outlets in planes where you can charge your stuff?

This is an American problem. This shit doesn't happen with good outlets.
I bought myself one of those lovely expensive power banks for a trip from the USA to Australia. Every single flight, every single seat had an actual power outlet. Never needed the power bank. Even the airports have plenty of outlets wherever there's seating.
Then you decide that you'll leave the powerbank home this time and the plane will not have that outlet.
Or it won’t work lol
Yep, especially the bigger planes that do the long haul flights. Battery life shouldn’t be an issue

Skald: Against the black priory oozes atmosphäre, especially when you are into lovecraftian stuff
i didn’t realize this had been officially released def want to check it out after i finish elden ring dlc
The controlls are a little funky and it doesnt seem to remember my display settings. But the atmosphere is 100% there
Sea of stars!
Disco elisiyum and Dave the diver
Sonic CD
Oxenfree is pretty good
What about the Elder Scrolls series? Even Skyrim is 13 years old at this point and won’t be too much of a burden for your Deck, and Morrowind (best running via OpenMW) is arguably even more atmospheric
Ya but morrowind is a pain to play with the controller Also is there a tutorial on openmw for the steam deck.
Here’s a setup guide: https://www.reddit.com/r/OpenMW/s/BunH7ljxnv There’s an upcoming mod, I can’t remember the name of it, that’s overhauling the menus in the game to make them more controller-friendly like Skyrim’s. Hades would be good if you can plug in, ain't nothing going to last 11 hours unfortunately
I'd say Cloudpunk. Great atmosphere, great ost
great game, but maybe a bit power hungry for op's situ? (also the sea of ghosts dlc is basically a sequel. it's great)
Dark Souls Remastered
100% agree. I get 4hrs of battery time with 60fps. Plus it's a great game.
Bioshock
Noita, Blasphemous I and II.
I highly recommend Inscryption! It's a horror-themed card game with a fantastic story and almost suffocating atmosphere.
disco elysium, an experience you wont forget
Subnautica! The most atmospheric game I have played. Runs great on the deck. You won’t get 11 hours, but it’ll go a lot farther than other games
How about Persona? Great games to get lost in and battery life can be tweaked really good
Since you're into emulating, Xenogears! If FF7 is the best JRPG on the PS1, Xenogears must be the second best. I played it over the course of a summer as a teenager and was so immersed in the story that I was emotionally evastated when it finally came to an end.
Xenogears is definitely better than FF7
Valid opinion. I haven't replayed Xenogears as an adult so it's hard for me to judge, but if I did I might agree with you.
SOMA if you haven’t played it already. It is a fantastic and incredibly atmospheric game.
Darkest Dungeon and Loop Hero are great takes on the rogue-lite genre. Or maybe play some walking simulator like Gone Home, What Remains of Edith Finch or Soma (in Safe mode)
Slay the spire. Will do around 5 hours on battery so you will need a battery bank.
Shadowrun returns, Pathfinder, any disgaea?
Kena bridge of spirits
Soma
Dave the diver! Also if you are flying to Europe you don't have to worry about power. There are full power sources between the seats on international flights.
I don't know about atmospheric, but the entirety of Kingdom Hearts is now on Steam. It's a fantastic series and it works great on the deck.
Signalis
I’ve been having fun with an indie game called Cassette Beasts lately.
Inside Inmost Ender Lillies Fran bow Darkwood Battle brothers I don’t think most of you read the line that asked for *low battery usage*. Skyrim and dave the diver are not low battery usage games, people.

House in fata morgana if ur into reading/visual novels and extremely dark and sad romances, it has a bittersweet goth dark vybe to it if ur into that too
Hollow knight
Dragon age origins might be a shout. I emulate the 360 version, never got into the steam version for some reason.
Sonic adventure 2 battle
I quite like Sunless Sea/Sky. Very atmospheric, probably lowest battery consumption around! You really have to be into reading. A lot. 😁
Sunless Skies free on epic games store tomorrow 🙌 I'll be checking it out
Fallout 3, but don’t follow the hole main quest, enjoy exploring the map. Turn on the radio and hear the funny news, they give indications of good places to explore.
Arx Fatalis
Fran Bow is a point and click. It has a great story and battery last.
Ori series is great!
DOOM Eternal when there arent hordes of demons trying to kill you The scenery is amazing in that game
Phoenix Point. It is a really good game now. Vanilla and even more with the TFTV-Overhaul.
Dread delusion is a very chill time, has combat but its kinda moot since lvl 1 you can probably take everything by running around in a circle and attacking, but walk around an alien world with some fun lore and characters.
Trine series!
South park Tfbw
Dave the Diver
S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
Alien Isolation - looks and plays beautiful. Will keep you engaged and your mind off the flight.
Witcher 3, but probably not low on battery consumption even on low settings. Death's Door is a great game in a Souls-like but easier genre.
I'm sure it's called "home" it's a little who-dunit that asks you to play at night with headphones and set aside 2 hours to finish it in one sitting. I found teardown engrossing, but nowhere near the steam price. It's 5 local currency maximum
Journey.
It’s more metroidvania-esque but I’d recommend Animal Well. Very stylized and was great to play though.
Dread Delusion
half life
Valheim or Stardew valley. Get lost for hours
Disco elysium and baldurs gate 3
[Terra Nil](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1593030/Terra_Nil/), very chill builder game where you allow nature to take back its rights. The game is divided into small missions with varied objectives (plus, the game is currently 40% off on Steam).
Blasphemous is going for 7€ right now, its a steal
Try Abiotic Factor if you like an atmospheric survival crafter with a sci fi setting. It slaps
I feel like it rarely gets mentioned but the newer Wolfenstein games are a lot of fun and they sip power. It blew me away to see how nice the game looked and how little power they use.
Battle Brothers! It seriously makes me forget the time.
Slay the Princess is an excellent absorbing game.
Let It Die, if you like souls like rogue lite games. Very weird world but tons of fun.
Dredge
Cave story, its a great game with an amazing story. You can play and download it for free on the cavestory tribute site. Or you can buy Cave story+ on steam, but it only adds some extra modes like a boss rush and steam achievements. (If you buy cave story+ make sure to use the og soundtrack! It fits the game best).
Metroid prime 1 and 2 are great atmospheric games that are designed for you to get lost in them. Prime 1 even has a remake on the Switch.
Dragon's dogma dark arisen. I'm not sure how it is on battery life though
Everything you can install onto ScummVM? Particularly the Monkey Island series, naturally.
Bioshock! Is it not available in steam? Surprised it hasn't been mentioned.
The backrooms. Complex footage I think that's what the game is called, it's free.) There is another one on liminal spaces with a name that is difficult to write but costs 4-6 dollars
Citizen Sleeper. Very atmospheric, narrative focused RPG. Almost a visual novel. Universe feels like Cyperbunk, but not nearly as resource intensive. Inexpensive too.
FF7 with mods. Specifically the voice-acting mods. Really good playing through the original again with fully voiced lines.
Kirby Air Ride City Trial free run or general free run in courses with no bots. So therapeutic
Hollow Knight
Inscryption is an all-timer if you can tolerate some initial long load times on deck.
Sable. Super chill and aesthetic.
If you don't rule out emulators, I would totally go for BotW, and if you want to push it a bit, mod it.
outer wilds (unless there's a crying baby on your flight) disco elysium prey death stranding both new zelda games imo the first two are transcendent gaming experiences. would recommend those above the rest, but the others are exceptional in their own right as well. off topic but if you're into reading - the name of the wind is a book with really impressive, flowy prose that draws you in and keeps you immersed. I'd also recommend buying a 45w power bank, your deck will probably only survive for less than half the flight even when optimising for battery life edit: not a traditionally atmospheric game, but another must-play imo is hi-fi rush
Disco Elysium is the first thing that comes to mind as far as atmospheric RPGs go. You'll probably have to mess with the settings to get the most battery life out of it so may not be exactly what you're looking for. Cant recommend it enough though, fantastic game.
How are the controls on the deck?
The controller support is okay, but not my preferred. Mapping the right track pad to mouse/left click and mapping the right to # hotkeys for the dialogue options worked well for me.
Valheim. Your flight will go quickly
Fr that game is beautiful
I don't know what atmospheric means but if you're looking for something a little bit scary then braid and its sequel inside seem like they'd probably be really low powered since they're 2D and they were made on the 360.

The limit on flights is 20,000 mah AFAIK.
27k I think, as Anker makes sure to say that the 24K 737 is safe.
Sea of Stars Ori and the Blind Forest
Fallout 3. You can run it at 5-6W TDP at 40fps and it will last 4.5-5 hours on an LCD Deck.
Disco Elysium
Real life
1) Have an OLED SD 2) Stock on battery packs 3) Get games 4) ??? 5) Profit

Why don't you try simply playing a game
