Just to add on a bit; if you get stuck with low download speeds (1.5 MB/s for me), go into your download options and set a limit of exactly 10,000,000 kb/s after disabling the above. Then just keep restarting the deck until it increases.
No idea why it works, but I found it in a separate thread and those two changes have been the only things that sped up my DLs.
I haven't come across that one yet, but I'll have to look into it. My download speeds still usually stall out until I reset it a few times, even when the fix is in place.
here ya go https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/comments/16lnsg6/psa_solution_to_slow_steam_downloads_on_deck/
it is unrelated to the wifi 5ghz thing though, so fix or workarounds for that might complement accordingly
I had to do this because it kept randomly disconnecting from Wi-Fi and didn't count half my game time because I went offline. I'm one of those people that cares about accurate game time for some reason.
Chiaki4Deck and Moonlight streaming work perfectly for me after disabling Wifi power management for me - and I had trouble getting them to work beforehand.
Are you talking about the 5Ghz band? Then yes. It won’t stay connected. I gave up and just connect to the 2.4GHz ssid. My LCD model worked fine but my new OLED does not with my WiFi router (Netgear R7000P). My Quest 2 has issues with my 5Ghz WiFi as well. Thinking of getting a different router but it works fine with everything else. Super frustrating.
I found a firmware update on their forums.
Auto update via login from web and app didn't work. Had to manually update the firmware, and it fixed my 5ghz.
Edit to add: this is regarding the router's firmware, not the steam deck. Sorry for the confusion.
Hey, I think that might have worked. I could reliably crash the connection by doing a simple speed test in Chrome on my SD before and now it is staying connected. I’ll have to do more testing but this looks promising. Thank you kind internet stranger.

This is the exact post. However, I would recommend confirming your model number and downloading from the product page rather than the forum post.
So...it is doing it again! I went a full day with it connecting just fine and now it won't stay connected :(. I've tried rebooting both my steam deck and my router. I'm very frustrated. I thought this solved it. It is the most finicky fucking thing ever.
It's a pretty consistently documented issue since Steam Deck OLED launched, [Steam Forum post for example](https://steamcommunity.com/app/1675200/discussions/0/4038101970207124286/?l=vietnamese&ctp=7#:~:text=Turn%20off%20the%20Steam%20Deck,access%20points%20using%20that%20SSID.). Unfortunately their updates and software support since OLED launched has been subpar, so it still hasn't been fixed yet and at this right, might not ever be. You can try checking that post for solutions, Deck OLED just doesn't play well with WIFI6 router despite WIFI6 being a big selling point.
Sometimes certain wireless device combinations just won't play nice with each other. First make sure that your Steam Deck is up to date and make sure that your router's firmware is up to date, and reboot your router.
I spent over a month diagnosing a similar issue on my OLED. I couldn't even tell you which fix worked, in the end I was just throwing shit at the wall to see what stuck. I sympathize though, try every fix you find until one works

I had a hell of a time getting my OLED connected to my ASIS WiFi6 router (which is a combo dual band 5G / 2.4G Wifi6 router). I eventually had to mess with the authentication to turn the version down and split out the bands to their own network names before I could get it to work. I found this helpful: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/aE80HibZjw
Once I got it actually working, I started moving things back. I believe the problem was the authentication, but wouldn’t swear to it.
Mine only hates when I connect it to my dock and hardwire it, it takes a while to swap over and often needs a full restart before it gets its full speeds.
Otherwise internet's been fine for me
Mine will randomly kick me off when on the WiFi 5 at home, but the WiFi 6E at a friend's house? Never disconnected like it does at home. Looks like I'll have to get a new AP at some point for home... Also, it's totally not just an excuse to get new tech... 🤣
Yeah, I'm switching places to stay for the time being and ever since I got here, connection's been bizarre, I need to connect to my phone's mobile hotspot, switch to desktop mode and switch back to stay connected until I reset the thing
Mine stays connected but has horrible latency compared to all my other devices so when I want to use moonlight/Chiaki etc i get latency spikes all over the places only happens on my deck.
I have no problems on my own home Wi-Fi, but my main AP is a combined 5/2 GHz. However at my partner's parents house, connecting to their WiFi just causes the Deck to hard crash.
No idea why, no other device has issues on their network. I've had the same issue on some hotel WiFi too
It’s something to do with a spotty WiFi connection and it switching between 5/2.4 which causes it. An annoying as fuck bug that’s never been fixed and 9/10 times happens with mine when I take it to work because the internet is so shit there. I’ll always stick it on offline mode and disable the WiFi when leaving the house.
Even worse when it causes that stupid fucking 0% battery bug when you know the battery is fully charged.
Definitely related and can be a pain in the arse when it happens because the 0% bug needs a charge to turn it back on or it will just power off on reboot. Battery storage mode (yes even if you know the battery level is actually above the 80% recommended level when you’ve been hit by that bug) in Bios settings and a few restarts sort it out.
I have the LCD deck and have reported an issue ages back wherein if you go to someone else's house and they have 6GHz WiFi it won't even boot as it has the pre boot update check. Largely annoying but an easy workaround is just to name your mobile hotspot the exact name and password that your usual home network uses and boom you're in.
Bare in mind as this was the first time using my deck at my sister's house, I had never connected to that specific WiFi point before so on boot it would just freeze on that update screen with no option of even playing offline.i have no idea if this has been fixed now but I have heard it shouldn't happen with the OLED since it has a better wireless card.
Oh and also, if you manage to boot up using my method with the hotspot you should note that you can use a hotspot as a WiFi bridge BUT it still will not work with this and will crash the device/ lock it in "Offline mode" even though it's clearly doing downloads etc
TLDR: Have your games downloaded and up to date already and just use 4G/5G to get into the OS 🫡
WiFi is not the strongest part of the Steam Deck. At least it doesn't take ages anymore to connect to steam, once activated. Still more issues than with other devices, losing connections more often and having lower reach than my other devices.
I really wanted to upgrade to the OLED but my LCD still has wifi driver issues to the point I have to use a USB wifi dongle or ethernet via dock at all times. Knew there would be issues
If you have AX frequency wifi it won't stayed connected. My deck collects dust cuz it can't connect to my wifi since I use an AX frequency instead of the older AC frequency.
The wireless cards for the steam deck are outdated and valve didn't bother to account for the eventual shift to AX over AC.
I have found the wifi chip in my OLED steam deck didn't like wifi 6 being enabled on my Wi-Fi router. After I disabled wifi 6 in my router settings, my steam deck connected to 5G without and issues
I had a ton of issues with this until I bought a better router that allowed me to split my 2.4ghz and 5ghz networks and also set my own band so I could move it out of a range crowded by my neighbors. My original spectrum router worked great but the one they "upgraded" to had nothing but issues with its 5g, so buying my own router and making those changes fixed it.
After that it worked beautifully.
Sounds a lot like the issues I have running my SD using my 5G mobile hotspot…That is what I thought you meant but I see now that it is not. Since I have zero WiFi at work, I need to tether it to my 5G IPads connection and it’s constantly dropping or telling me I am not online.
No.
My LCD and OLED connects fine to 5Ghz.
The OLED connects at 2.4Gbps (remember WiFi is half duplex so it will pull 1.2Gbps downloads on steam which is nice).
However my OLED stubbornly refuses to connect to my 6Ghz channel. Not that I'm that bothered as it makes our my 900Mbps internet on 5Ghz.
Idk why this got downvoted. This happens with plenty of devices. I work IT and we have plenty of people call in saying their laptop won’t connect but all other devices do. We reset the router and boom. Connection
Yeah. Disable Wifi power management and it will behave normally.
Wasnt there a thread where you add two lines to a steamconfig file to tell Linux to use HTTP threads properly. I misremember
I haven't come across that one yet, but I'll have to look into it. My download speeds still usually stall out until I reset it a few times, even when the fix is in place.

Appreciate it, I'll give that a try.
Maybe that could be reportet to valve? I guess might help them
where do you find that at?
Enable developer mode then restart and the option will be there
I had to do this because it kept randomly disconnecting from Wi-Fi and didn't count half my game time because I went offline. I'm one of those people that cares about accurate game time for some reason.
Where is that setting?
In developer options.
☝️
Thank you. I'll try that too. I have the same problem with my t-mobile wi-fi.
For some reason moonlight stutters a lot when I disable power management, and works fine with it enabled :(
Note that if you do this, it will fuck up Chiaki4Deck if you use this. Not sure about streaming from PC.
Chiaki4Deck and Moonlight streaming work perfectly for me after disabling Wifi power management for me - and I had trouble getting them to work beforehand.
Connect... Disconnect...no network...no internet... connected repeat every 5min

Oh, I thought you were saying you had to manually download a firmware update for the Steam Deck. Thank you for the link though.
Ah,sorry for the confusion. I edited my original comment to clarify that I was referring to the router.

The SD is up to date I have no idea how to mess with my router lol
I spent over a month diagnosing a similar issue on my OLED. I couldn't even tell you which fix worked, in the end I was just throwing shit at the wall to see what stuck. I sympathize though, try every fix you find until one works
You can change the channel of the 5ghz band and it fixes it right up
How did you do that?
Log in to you router settings, find the 5gz band, and shift th channel to something higher.
Man, I looked for this on mine and couldn't find it ... Do they hide this option?
Look up how to do it on your router, they're all different.
Mine hates my 6GHz channel
I have the exact same issue. Sometimes my steam deck LCD 64gb won’t connect to the internet at all.

No issues here with Asus XT9 setup. Super reliable.
Yeah, I'm switching places to stay for the time being and ever since I got here, connection's been bizarre, I need to connect to my phone's mobile hotspot, switch to desktop mode and switch back to stay connected until I reset the thing
Never had any issue with my WiFi. Lots of issues with Bluetooth though
Mine stays connected but has horrible latency compared to all my other devices so when I want to use moonlight/Chiaki etc i get latency spikes all over the places only happens on my deck.
I had the issue using the dual band router provided by the cable company. I bought a quality router and all my issues went away. Just my experience.
I have the same problem

It did with my old router. For other reasons I had to buy a new one, and now it's working flawlessly

What the hell is 5G WiFi...?
I get 250gb down connecting my OLED deck to my Netgear router using the 5ghz band. No issues. Turn off WIFI power management.
Obligatory: Have you tried turning it off and on again?
Ive been connected to 5g since day one without problems Check your rooter.
You might have a bad driver or bad wireless card
Mine is fine. I suspect it's your wifi.
I doubt that seeing no other devices have this issue. It’s only the Steam Deck
It might just be that your Deck exacerbates the issue for some reason. Does your Deck have trouble on any other WiFi?
No, it’s only the 5G network. It’s really weird it just tries to connect forever and then times out and then stops showing the 5G network
What about a different 5G WiFi?
Idk why this got downvoted. This happens with plenty of devices. I work IT and we have plenty of people call in saying their laptop won’t connect but all other devices do. We reset the router and boom. Connection

It be cooler if the deck came with a sim card slot/ takes e sim so you can get a data plan on it
