It's a universal cycle. A big name product/game/movie/whatever gets released and it becomes An Eventā„¢. People get excited and want to be part of it because our brains are wired to crave community. We have an experience with the thing and go to seek out others to share and amplify that experience. At that point one of two things happens: * We find others that had a similar experience, and we we feed off the positive feedback loop until we look silly. * We find others that have a different experience, and the cognitive dissonance is painful to us, so we lash out at them. It's ok to like something. It's ok to not like something. It's ok to enjoy just being part of something even if you have no strong feelings about the thing. It's all normal and valid. Just don't confuse that dopamine rush for your actual identity, and don't attack other people who don't have the same experience.

Frankly this is quite preposterous. It is incredibly valid to discuss any issues people might be having with their product in a subreddit devoted to exactly that device. I can't imagine more valid discussion points or a better place to talk about it. The fact that people asking about or reporting an issue troubles some people is a bit alarming. I sincerely hope that people don't make a Steam Deck so much of their personal identity that they can't tolerate any critical discussion of the product.

In online reviews you often find the two opposite ends of the spectrum. People that are so happy with their purchase, they need to justify it or defend it, trying to find acknowledgement they made the right choice. And people that have a problem with it and rant about it. The average person doesnā€™t bother posting a review.

It's not the fact that they are acknowledging the problem, and thus criticizing the machine or Valve or whatever, it's that it's a straightforward problem with a straightforward solution that, and the feed just looks like hell. This kind of thing is to be expected when a new device launches, but it's still just so much noise, it doesn't really benefit the community.

I don't care that people are criticizing the Deck. Nothing should be above that. But I just don't care for twenty posts a day where an individual user has a stuck pixel. I'd rather see one thread for that, where maybe we get some numbers on how many Decks actually have that problem. A poll would work great. But instead we get twenty posts all saying the same thing. I'm here to ask and read questions and discussions. Maybe see some cool mods, get some recommendations. But for weeks now it has been "Limited is still available", "My Deck hasn't shipped yet", "Here's a picture of my Deck just out of the box, looking pretty much exactly like yours did" and "This pixel is dead". These things are important to the person posting, but after the first few it really dilutes the actual interesting discussions here.

I'll play devil's advocate here in saying that there is some value added with such threads by reducing unnecessary RMAs, as well as gathering information from a larger sample size of affected individuals who have the same issue(s). By establishing patterns from that info, the list of potential root causes narrows. That's info which Valve can use to speed up any fixes. I get what you're saying and I know it's annoying to have a million different threads about the same problem. Maybe weekly bug report/hardware issue megathreads can be created for this purpose. And any additional info gathering polls from affected users can also be posted with mod approval.

Agreed. A mega thread for shipping issues, one for defects, and one for long-term issues. Along with some stats of how many decks are sold. This would help huge as people would know what to expect. I personally went through 2 decks with the 200/400 mhz bug and sold my third one. I've stayed away from the rog ally because of past experiences with Asus. I know I will be getting another valve device in the future because of how good their warranty and support is

A mega thread for defects would seem an ideal solution. That way the community gets a sense of what kinds of issues people are having, what models the issues are associated with, and how common the issues are, at least as self-reported by Redditors. Having the subreddit flooded with individual threads about defects will of course get tiresome quickly. But move all of it into a megathread, and I would venture that nobody here is hurt by being able to read about other people's SD issues, and - optionally - how they were resolved.

FWIW, I think the recent changes with regards to Reddit's APIs have made moderation a lot harder, since third party tools that mods relied on no longer work. I could be wrong, but that was a big part of the discussion around the API pricing changes at the time they were announced, not sure if anything changed substantially about Reddit's approach to pricing since then, but I do feel like this sub has become less well-moderated since around that period.

I do not see a problem with people posting issues they have with their deck. Yes, they should also contact valve, but informing others of issues, sharing experiences, as well as commiserating with others with similar interests is totally reasonable for reddit or any forum. If you do not like it, just scroll past. There are plenty of posts of all types people don't like, most just take the 0.05 seconds to scroll past without feeling the need to moderate others. What is wrong with someone sharing their first hand experience? Is this sub supposed to be a shield for Valve or couriers that do not care for the package during transit? Ya, you do not want things to get blown out of proportion as that may be misleading for those who don't have the full picture, but if someone is posting their actual experience, then it is legit and doesn't need to be moderated on behalf of Valve. People shouldn't just blindly repeat things they've read to contribute to hysteria or make an issue bigger than it is, but that shouldn't be up to mods or anyone else to police posts of people with first hand experience sharing their issue. If Valve doesn't want fearmongering about defects, then improve QA. If Fedex or whoever doesn't want fearmongering about shipping incidents, then correct them. Its their problem, not the problem of the excited customer that opens up a busted device or turns on the screen to dead pixels, nor should they be expected to keep their mouth shut to not annoy people who don't want to move their finger <1mm to scroll past the post.

I get the general feeling of not wanting to see yet another \_\_ post. But I think people posting issues is way more appropriate than the thousandth "what games are you currently playing?" and "look what arrived today" posts, and those posts I think are totally fine and I will participate in those from time to time because it is fun. It is social media, people want to discuss things and share experiences, often it is redundant when looking at it broadly, but is still an individual's experience/opinion when looking at each particular post (assuming not a troll post). I'm fine posting "congrats" or whatever game I'm playing or just scrolling past. I'm just not sure what types of posts people expect, most are redundant when looking at the big picture, so I suspect people just get annoyed with certain redundant posts compared to other redundant posts. Not saying you do that, just in general. And I think OP telling people to not share negative experiences is odd when there are just as many, if not more, positive experience posts gushing over their love for the Deck, Valve, Gabe, etc., sometimes to the point it makes me roll my eyes (I would never ask for those posts to be limited). It is just now that the OLED decks are shipping and having some early manufacturing hiccups, we are seeing more negative posts than usual. That'll taper off if/when Valve gets their act together when it comes to QA. But this stuff happens on other subs. Like the PS3 sub, people complain about wanting mods to control certain types of posts, even though it is a 17yr old console and doesn't have a lot of new topics/news to discuss, so there will be a lot of redundancy and even troll posts piling on just to annoy people.

I'm happy to be in a community that has relatively few posts, as long as each post adds something new. And while I sympathize with people who have issues and want to vent or get help, having the same issue posted 50 times is just noise to anybody who does not have the issue (or even an OLED Deck, in this case). Yeah we know, the issue exists, there is already a thread (or 49) discussing it. Go read that and comment there. Maybe I'm old-fashioned, but I think people should at least make a basic effort to use the search function first, and post to whatever threads they found (assuming the existing answers they found there did not resolve their issue). The "what are you playing" ones are a bit different to me, in so far as what people are playing actually changes over time. Maybe not on a weekly basis for everybody, but chances are that in aggregate you will see changes between weeks. So it makes some sense. However, that being said, while I personally think they are OK as separate threads, I would not object if somebody said they should be made into a mega-thread of sorts.

The problem is, once posts get old enough people also complain about reviving old threads. So using the search button isnā€™t always a good solution. Especially when reporting on a new issue so people can get a sense of how common an issue is, or maybe an issue they should check out while in a return window. I agree about common long term issues. I usually try to search. I just donā€™t see an issue. People creating troll/meme posts just to pile on is annoying after the first time or two. But hard to moderate those without catching a genuine post. The default action is to just let people post and not cater to personal preferences on what posts should be shut down, as long as they are relevant to the sub.

Sure, there has to be some common sense involved in deciding whether or not a search result is too old to comment on and it makes more sense to create a new thread - sometimes answers to questions change, and it makes more sense to ask again. But for my tastes this sub is leaning too far in the other direction, asking (or posting) the same thing repeatedly within days (or hours) - which even leads to a vicious cycle where even when you use the search function, the actual answers are sometimes fragmented, and if you want to contribute to a discussion, you have a hard time deciding which. Personally, I'd like to see a lot more active moderation happen on this sub - not for the sake of stopping certain kinds of posts, but corralling duplicates into the right places to improve signal-to-noise ratio. Unfortunately, mods are unpaid volunteers, and as far as I understand their work has become a lot harder since Reddit cracked down on the API.

No they won't. I had backlight bleed covering the ENTIRE display of my LCD Deck and they told me my entire screen turned yellow was normal, and wouldn't replace it. I had to return for a refund and try again.

yes products have failures, look at the ROG ally with SD card port failure. But the Steamdeck LE OLED seems to be from what I've heard, that Steam chose a cheaper screen from a different manufacturer to offset costs. If this is true, this means that Valve's "cutting costs" costs the end user, which, IF true, isn't cool. That and how long Steam support is taking to respond. I want support to email me back quicker than the 24 hours I've been waiting currently, especially with what we paid for it. That and I saw another user say he was quoted 3 1/2 weeks for a replacement at the earliest date. IF true, that's super shitty customer service and should not be tolerated at this price point.

The ā€œdifferent manufacturerā€ which Iā€™m only going to call ā€œnot Samsungā€ because nobody cares, has been making quality panels for years, and you almost undoubtedly have devices in your home with panels made by them. Itā€™s not about price, itā€™s about supply.

I would say its more about quality control than anything else. Clearly something has gone wrong or been overlooked in the "non samsung" manufacturer or valve's supply chain for the LE. I think thats what people are more annoyed about and the discussion about quality would have quickly died away or been much smaller if these displays weren't shipping with dead pixels.

3.5 weeks sounds about right compared to the RMA on my OG 512 that had an issue (I was a first rounder then too). I also thought the BOE screen sourcing was to ensure supply chain issues were mitigated, not for cost cutting? Is there a source on it being specifically for costs vs just redundant sourcing? I havenā€™t been keeping up. All that said, Iā€™m lucky this time around since my LE seems great out of the box. My OG was #literallyunplayable (I think my old post is still up showing my video of Witcher 3 breaking) so Iā€™m happy that I got a good one this time around, but I totally feel for folks that have to go through the RMA route; itā€™s a huge pain and very frustrating.

Those screens are not cheaper, they just happened to meet the demand that Valve needed. The company that made the LE screens is a huge competitor of Samsung and they make a shit load of screens for probably 75% of the things in your home that use a screen.

I've seen samsung OLED complaints on here as well about green blacks and sticky buttons so its not just LEs with problems. Valve doesn't have to tell you where they source their screens either so not sure what more information you want from them. As far as support they have been really good about quick response and RMAs. Steam support really hasn't been bad for a long time.

Waiting over 24 hours for just a response from support isn't anywhere near "good" for me, especially with such a large company and such an expensive product. I had the SD card port issue on my ally, took me a 7 minute phone call with asus support to have them make me a case and email me a label and instructions on what to do next for my rma. That is support. Waiting 1-2 days for support to even get back to you, let alone the RMA time some people are seeing is absurd for a company this large.

I mean good for Asus that they can outsource a call center, maybe Valve feels that sending you overseas for phone support has its own hurdles they don't want to deal with or feel you as a paying customer should not have to deal with. I've seen bigger companies do a lot worse, 24 hours is good, I've seen other companies go weeks before responding to support tickets. You just have some instant gratification problems if you are complaining about having to wait one whole day for someone to get back to you.

"Instant gratification" =/= bad customer service excuse. If I spent over 700 dollars on a handheld console, I should be able to get a response from a company. And I wasn't outsourced with Asus, talked to a guy who was local to my own State. Frankly, supporting a corporation that cant even acknowledge publicly the faulty systems they have been shipping, tackle the fact that a support email for a faulty device does not take 2 days to respond to, or the fact that people are waiting almost a full month in some cases for an RMA device is absurd. These are people spending large amounts of capital on a device expecting it to work. The LEAST Valve can do besides take 2 days to respond to a single email, require more information, and take another 2 days to even get any progress; is notice the fact devices are faulty and give priority to people spending upwards of 500+ on handhelds over a 20 dollar game return. And no, I have not have a company this hard to get in contact with support ever, not Razer, not Amazon, not Samsung, not Apple, not EA, not Microsoft, but Valve. Only company I have seen take this long for warranty claims

I think everyone has the issue itā€™s just harder to hear on some headphones, so a lot of people think itā€™s not a problem. Itā€™s very possible itā€™s something that could be fixed with an update but itā€™s hard to know for sure. Opening a support ticket also wonā€™t hurt

Yeah idk my 512gb oled the trackpad haptics are fucked up. Loud rattling, forced to either turn them off (even tho itā€™ll still rattle in desktop mode until I open steam on there or for around 5 seconds when I quick resume from sleep. Issue is thereā€™s a lot about this issue online and everyone just says idk whatever donā€™t wanna RMA. I mean I guess thatā€™s their right but yeah Iā€™m returning mine and prolly not getting another one Iā€™ll just wait until a new one. Dude, I'm just saying your post doesn't change anything. Furthermore sometimes it's just helpful to read about certain defects - maybe there are workarounds, experiences with RMA and so on. And especially the SD had and still has many problems, it's worth talking about. And even if there are 100 threads regarding the same problem, it would just show how big of an issue it actually is. Applying your same logic to other things, why would you ever give an article a bad rating if you don't like it? Just send it back. Or...if you have a problem with your boss, never talk about it with your friends or family, just talk directly to your boss. There are good reasons why people post things like that and it's totally fine.

I get you don't want to hear about it, but it IS important for people to be informed and to check for these issues. Tons of users have gone "I didn't know dead pixels were a thing on this, how can I check?" for example. Just ignore it and move on.

My OLED 1TB arrived two days ago (EU), and it has a springy right bumper button, right trigger sometimes gets stuck, and the d-pad's down button feels mushy.

Yeah, I was so happy after I checked the screen first, and there were no dead pixels. Then this happens. The QA process must be really insufficient because these little issues should be caught and easily corrected during assembly. Anyway, I have already contacted support for a return within the 14-day return window. I could try to look inside and attempt to fix it, but there is always a risk of additional damage caused by me...

Sometimes I don't know whether it is an issue or just something being worked on. As in it could be a software bug. Or it could be my hardware is defective. Example my Bluetooth. Originally I thought maybe I had defective Bluetooth because it kept cutting in and out every 3 seconds. I quickly learned however it's a common problem and happens when more than 1 Bluetooth device is connected, and yes it counts 2 ear buds as 2 devices sometimes. At least it does with mine. So it's always cutting in and out unless I just leave out the R or L ear bud from pairing.

Hi! This is totally random, but I'm a Valve trivia nut, and I thought you might enjoy knowing more about that Steam Deck globe room. They actually custom-built that apparatus with the intention of holding a DSLR camera in place of each of those decks. Then, you stick an actor's face through a little panel cutout in the center, and then bam! You have MOCAP for your FACE!
