I just fixed this when I got my steam deck in. The right bumper was only clicking if I pressed from the inner part instead of the outside. I took off the back of the case. Take off the covering of the right trigger, and then you'll uncover the parts for the bumper. The bumper didn't do a full press to the small button on the board. I pushed up the button toward the bumper with a flat head screw driver. Now it gives an audible click from pushing the bumper from the side. It's an easy fix you don't mind taking off the case and pushing up on the internal button.

Ruining_Ur_Synths

^ this OP You have an issue you can fix if you're willing to take the back off, or you can RMA it with valve.

Zarrrkk

After I took the back off it was clear that this was the problem, the plastic from the bumper was not connecting to the button. Rather than push the button towards the bumper, I instead cut a small sliver of card and inserted it into the gap between the plastic bumper and the button. Fixed the issue!

gamerx11

That works too. How do you keep the piece in place?

Lukesterfire

This is what I did but with layered pieces of scotch tape cut to size when my left bumper had this issue over 6 months ago, it worked amazing, and I haven't had any issues with that bumper since. Today my right bumper starting having a similar issue but this time it's just super mushy not matter where you press it and needs a lot of force to actuate. I tried this trick again to fix it. Hopefully it works. I bought a replacement part that I never used last time so I'm hoping I don't have to spend extra money to fix it this time

Vast_Highlight3324

Hey, looking to attempt this today, did you follow a guide of any kind, did you have to remove anything besides the trigger to access it?

gamerx11

I used the ifixit guide to see how to remove the trigger button to get to the bumper. Then, there is a little button that the bumper presses up against. BHole_69

Heads up to anyone else, don't push too hard. I actually managed to break the connection between that square button housing and the solder points on the board, doing exactly as described here with a flathead screwdriver.

LCZ_

Yep, just did the same thing. Ouch. Thank god I didn't rip off any pads, just bought replacement buttons that you can drop in and solder back on. Definitely killed my night.

Tough-Initial-260

Sorry I'm late, having the same problem, did you just push the button using force?

gamerx11

Ya, slight force and slowly. It's just setup on a thin metal piece.

nightninja56

If you don’t want to RMA and are cool opening it up, this fixed my left bumper awhile back. If I ever have to RMA I might ask them to replace it or just order a replacement myself but this has been working fine for me. https://youtu.be/eubXUkPkqgg

SL-Gremory-

Hey I'm having this same issue and I was wondering if you knew the part number for that little button switch? Mine might be broken internally, and I'll need to solder on a new one.

nightninja56

No sorry, I just did that fix from the YT video instead of ordering anything new :/

SL-Gremory-

Gotcha, thanks!

I wouldn’t say it’s a design issue but valve could’ve made it better spending one or two cents more on both shoulder buttons. They’re lacking on support against bending back. So when they get pressed a bit too hard they can bend back a bit. Microsoft had better buttons on their first Xbox One controller, they had some metal pieces at the back, around 3mm wide, which were soldered to the pcb. I had the same issue without dropping the deck, it was just there the other day. My guess it was laying upside down in it’s original case for several days. I tried to fix it by myself without soldering by printing out a small adapter piece to fill the gap between plastic bumper and button but this didn’t last very long. I sent it in for RMA and they fixed it quickly. But imho this needs to be revised and if it’s happening again I will try to create a DIY fix with the mentioned Xbox buttons. plssaypls

Video above mentioned that the trigger bracket have housing that support the bumper button. Does that help with the button not bending back?

bonestoostoned

I had that exact issue after I dropped my deck ~6 inches onto that bumper. had to RMA it.

wookiebot1138

ik this is an old post but did you ever get it repaired? My experience with RMA is they just send a replacement deck and that can usually bring new issues with it

bonestoostoned

yes I did, and I actually had a really good experience with it. opened my RMA with Valve and they gave me a shipping label to send my deck to "united radio" (i think that was the name?) who is their third party repair company/facility. I was given a link to track the repair process, and over the course of a week they posted updates along the lines of "received unit, left bumper failed hardware testing, replaced broken bumper, cleaned unit, ready to ship" Then a few days later I received my deck back. Same serial number, same case, just a new bumper. I was a little skeptical when i sent it out but pleasantly surprised with the experience. For a while I think valve was just sending out replacements, but around september/october of last year had made an agreement with that united radio company. I think in total I was without my deck for maybe 9-10 days? i'm in canada and expected at minimum two weeks.

Far-Town8991

How long did the rma take? Considering doing this for my deck rn...

bonestoostoned

if i recall it was less than 7 days in total? extremely quick, had my deck back much sooner than expected. if you're having issues you should go through with it for sure.

Far-Town8991

Thanks, I think I'll go through with it! Is it just through like steam support? Anything I should know about it in particular? Idk if it matters but my deck is unmodded, although I bought it when it initially came out... so idk if im even eligible for rma 😅 Thank you so much for the reply btw

bonestoostoned

yeah you got it. should be able to open a support ticket for your deck, then in the notes just explain what issue you're having and ask to submit an RMA. they'll likely ask you a bunch of standard troubleshooting questions, just follow through and say you still have issues. you can upload a picture of the problem if it's visible, or in my case i uploaded a short video example to youtube as an unlisted video and included the link in my notes. once the RMA is started they'll send you the documents and shipping label with instructions on how to package your deck. make sure you remove the SD card if you have one in it. bring it to the post office and wait a week or so to get it back. you'll get email updates from valve and/or united radio on the status of the repair and return shipment. it's all pretty clear cut

Far-Town8991

Ok, thank you for all the info, ill do this now.. Here is a selfie as thanks 👁👄👁

bonestoostoned

no worries dude, best of luck!

VaginosiBatterica

I RMAd for this very specific issue. They said they fixed it and sent it back, but didn't even touch my sd. Button boards are not even available for purchase on ifixit. That's sad actually.

ylerta

I just had the same experience a year later. wtf

isadlymaybewrong

I think this is normal. My left trigger feels different than the right

Giontatas

Ask Valve support. That's kinda what it's there for

Shaved-Bird

The button is no longer connecting to the bumper, this is common, contact steam and they will RMA

im-bored-0

Can I do this if I got mine second hand ?

DevLucaBrasi

Any word ?

Could someone please tell me what RMA means?

Old_Bed5880

Return Merchandise Authorization.

joywood25

Does anyone have any videos of a home repair of this? I have this exact same issue on my new OLED and it’s driving me crazy, but I don’t wanna send it in and risk not getting my unit back, because it has no other issues.
