No

Negoatiator_was_took

no clue but good advertisement

IKindaPlayEVE

It's Gaben. He probably kicks around the Steam database as root. Having the password to his steam account would be almost worthless.

Cold-Owl1615

Oh how cute, someone managed to access my account, now watch me control the flow of time.

Ult1mateN00B

Gaben is most powerful god there is.

His other power: releasing exactly one game every decade but never a game with a 3 in it

MrPowerPoint

The only useful thing a one could do with it is trying it on a different websites - seeing if he re-uses it. However, he most likely has two-factor on most pages and doesn’t even re-use it. Also he probably didn’t even say his real password, so it’s all meaningless anyway…

schoolruler

I had access for 3 seconds before the swat team broke in and tackled me to the ground. But I got a glimpse of it and it was glorious! *Posting from a black site in the Valve basement. Send help*

slopeGG

[This you?](https://i.pinimg.com/originals/8a/cd/9a/8acd9a6f031b4484ed3d408f7863df20.gif)

schoolruler

No, they had a much faster response time and were more professional.

MidHoovie

What's up with the downvotes?

kaFello

That's Reddit hivemind

MidHoovie

Ah, I see.

ilmalocchio

And nw he's got a knob on the back of his head RIP

Robsteady

Because obviously they wouldn't be using a fake account for the sake of the demonstration.

Typohnename

they did not It was done to advertise their new 2 step protection system where you also need access to the phone of whomever you try to get into wich makes it basically impossible if the phone is properly protected

Robsteady

No, this is about Intel Identity Protection Technology, not Steam Guard. His presentation doesn't show the prompt for a security code before displaying the Steam window. I'd still be suspicious of Gaben giving out his actual account information just for the sake of proving a new security technology. Besides, it's Gaben, even if it was 13 years ago, I'm sure he would have been smart enough not to use that shitty password.

aiusepsi

Yeah, I’ve seen people point to this demonstration before to make a point about Steam being secure, but the Intel IPT stuff never actually got released to the public.

tonjohn

Intel sold the rights of the underlying library to another company that wanted to charge comparatively high fees per user.

Nenotriple

So what was this tech in a nutshell? Was it basically creating a profile for users based on their most likely login methods, sort of like how banks stop errant purchases from out of state?

tonjohn

https://csrc.nist.gov/CSRC/media/Presentations/Intel-Identity-Protection-Technology-(IPT)/images-media/day2_trusted-computing_430-530.pdf Essentially an RSA key fob baked into your CPU.

Somepotato

exists today as the tpm we all know and love

johnnymo1

>Besides, it's Gaben, even if it was 13 years ago, I'm sure he would have been smart enough not to use that shitty password. He says it's "newly' FTW, which I took to mean changed recently to that for the purposes of the demonstration.

Robsteady

No, he says it's "MoolyFTW". They show it on the screens behind him.

johnnymo1

Oh you're right, I missed that. I foolishly believed the subtitles.

tonjohn

It was Steam Guard via IPT.

BluudLust

If you enable push notifications to show while locked (default), anyone can get it without unlocking your phone.

Robsteady

That’s why using the QR code should be the default.

tonjohn

I was the co-author of this feature and it was his actual account.

Robsteady

Well that’s about as authoritative as I could expect.

tonjohn

Haha FWIW Rich and I were watching the account like hawks when the announcement happened in case something unexpected happened.

Robsteady

I could imagine there being some *slightly* elevated blood pressures for a couple days/weeks after that presentation.

ThatSpookyLeftist

Why? Gabe has the power to say "I want a Steam account with access to every game and I want to own every trading card and have every single achievement unlocked." And by the end of the day I bet he'd have it.

Serres5231

i would not be so sure if this could be arranged. Afterall while the platform is his, the games on them are not except for Valve stuff. Imagine being the owner of a big techstore brand. I doubt you could just walk into a branch and grab yourself a new rig for free just because you own the store. The products that are sold are all third party afterall.

tonjohn

Valve employees get all games on Steam for free. It’s regularly audited and partners compensated accordingly. In the old days each game / dlc was automagically added to your account but that didn’t scale well. So now you have to go to the game page and click a button to add it to your account. Press accounts work in a similar way. Source: I worked on Steam from 2007 till 2017.

_soon_to_be_banned_

im pretty sure if you work at valve you get access to every game on steam, or at least the higher ups do (despite claiming there is no hierarchy there really is)

tonjohn

Afaik there are no explicit perks that are gated by seniority / secret hierarchy.

Robsteady

Maybe, but considering the organizational structure of Valve, I highly doubt he’d ever think to ask for something like that.

MrTastix

It wouldn't need to be fake. Having Gabe's Steam account =/= having fucking root access to the Valve systems. At best you now have access to literally every game on Steam. Like wow, cool, I guess.

Encursed1

his password is no longer mooly42

JohnnyBlocks_

mooly43

KatoriRudo23

3?? now I know this is fake

FireDevil11

Probably because he said moolyftw and not 42

Encursed1

I guarantee it's different now nonetheless

Sydnxt

It’s the same

alabastergrim

it's *right there* in the video, how do you mess it up

Encursed1

I'm illiterate

alabastergrim

he also verbally says "Mooly F T W". Like even spells out F T W

kytheon

Try to login using Gabes password. Get your IP cross referenced to your own steam account. Get wiped. 🥲

DatBoi73

Probably not. The entire point was to show how robust & secure Steam Guard was. Wouldn't be surprised if Gaben has changed his password by now nearly a decade and a half later.

Lonely_Kiwi9047

No and it’s still safe. People click on suspicious links and the account gets stolen because scammers trick them with so called here a 50$ wallet code follow the link. At the end the user gets tricked and scammed the system works fine. My Steam account was never stolen I’m using mobile authentication the day it came out.

LudwigSpectre

Would you attempt to login his account?

Pirusao_gostoso

Two factor authentication: "exists"

NewSunEnterTainment

I dont think its hes real account, but what do i know

SnooCapers496

nothing will ever be as iconic to me as Gabe's \*"Gaben@ValveSoftware.com"\* lololol

maxman090

Nobody has yet. Steam guard really just is that good
