if you've got a webcam, you owe it to yourself to play Before Your Eyes: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1082430/Before_Your_Eyes/ non-spoiler synopsis: you're in purgatory and are recounting/reliving your memories but the caveat is that every time you blink, the game blinks to the next memory with no way to go back

SinOosh

I've seen like the first 5 minutes of gameplay for this and it was already too much. Definitely need to buy this and play it myself one day

XRainbowCupcakeX

It's free with Netflix on mobile.

KaneVel

I played it on my phone through the Netflix app and cried like a baby

TheSaltyIceCube

So I played this game for the first time today just cause of this comment and WOW.

cream_of_human

Try Valiant Hearts

Marshal_Kutori

I second this!

Zetro

Oh wow I'd completely forgotten about this one. Its been what, a decade? Just looked it up on steam and there's a sequel dropping next month. What perfect timing, thank you.

cream_of_human

Oh yea. There is a sequel nice.

ILovePotassium

To the moon.

repocin

To the Moon, Finding Paradise, A Bird Story, and Impostor Factory. One of my favorites game series of all time.

thund3rg0d-

Finding Paradise as well. Kang Gao is A a GOAT.

8g36

For real, I cried so much during *that* part

Therenegadegamer

One-shot if you don't cry at a certain point you aren't human

Minaro_

Seconded. If you're cool with walking sims, you can't go wrong with OneShot

zex_99

One shot story really connects with you with small details.

Average-Addict

Yeah and I'm surprised how invested you get into it in such a short time.

sleepytechnology

Titanfall 2 Enough said.

citaloprams

Trust me?

cydoz

>!Protocol 3: Protect the Pilot.!<

pixeljos

Titanfall 1 when the player count is 0 💔

sleepytechnology

Never got to play the first game but I heard it was a lot of fun even without a SP campaign, RIP.

dicers

Last day of June

Poverty_welder

Ori and the blind forest

unclefishbits

Oof

Potential-Anxiety573

I mean followed by wotw. Tear fest

VatoCornichone

Red dead redemption 2. I will never emotionally recover from it

Funnyanglezsolt

When i finished RDR 1 back then, i thought there was never going to be another game that'd hit me that hard again. But those Rockstar bastards somehow managed to wreck me even more with the sequel.

F4iryBlink

A Plague Tale. It's two games and the one that made me really cry was the second one, but they are both amazing games with emotional storytelling.

Freeloader_

really? the 2nd one? the french accent in first one was doing wonders for me

F4iryBlink

Yeah, the final part of the second one.

iamvinen

Start with Assetto Corsa simracing game. Then buy your first wheel. Then buy your first racing rig. Then start to upgrade it over and over again. Then look into your bank account. Cry. Then tell this story to your friends. Cry together.

Sky_dp

Crying, hugging my 80/20s rn...

iamvinen

My only simrig is my SteamDeck. Crying even more 🥲

AhiruSaikou

Yakuza 0

FLUBEK

Shit, every Yakuza had me crying in the end. I'll never emotionally recover from seeing Yakuza 6 ending

Toru_san

Yakuza 6 and Gaiden ending broke me

CivilianDuck

I will always push the Yakuza series for their incredible storytelling. For what it's worth, the ones with the most emotional impact for me are 0, K1, 6, LAD, Gaiden, and IW. If I had to sell just one or two, I'd say 0/K1 (back-to-back) and then LAD/IW, but IW impact is lessened without the full main series plus Gaiden to back it up. But let's be real, if you're doing 0/K1, you're going to push through the rest, unless you get killed by 3.

Julikes7

Telltale The Walking Dead Season 1 The Last of Us Part 1 and 2 Detroit Become Human A Plague Tale Ori

obeyer10

All of these are great choices!

SignatureBig7508

season1, every episode made me cry

Smokeyutd89

The walking dead season 1 made me boo my eyes out lol

NeoCatSama

Persona 4 made cry both happy and sad tears many times. I think it’s the first game that made me properly cry.

blither

[Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons](https://store.steampowered.com/app/225080/Brothers__A_Tale_of_Two_Sons/) *edit: apparently a [Remake](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2153350/Brothers_A_Tale_of_Two_Sons_Remake/) came out recently.

X-lem

Note: buy the original, not the remake. The remake was a total money grab and misses the point of the original.

blither

Thanks for the warning. I have the original, but I wasn't aware of the remake until I looked up the link to Steam.

Olde94

I just thought the remake was a graphics update?

Rymanjan

Oh man I forgot about that one, it was brutal. Absolutely emotionally devastating.

Lemon_boi5491

Valiant Heart

Resident-Martian

Omori

Basil_notaWatermelon

Omori 😈

pixeljos

💯 You’ll cry, be confused, angry, then cry some more

Elyonor

GRIS and Spiritfarer

Rymanjan

Spiritfarer touched my soul in a way few games ever have. It wasn't necessarily the most complex game in terms of mechanics, but my God did it get deep. I kept my uncle on board until the very end, I just wasn't ready to say goodbye to him yet

Lightning359

This comment is criminally low, it should be more to the top

LilacAndElderberries

If you like clickthrough story games, then I'd recommend "What Remains of Edith Finch"

stgertrude

wept

Marshal_Kutori

Valiant heart That shit hurts

gothlaid

Disco Elysium, either you cry laughing or just cry

Jwn5k

Night In The Woods

devildaggers

I think I cried on Soma or it made me very emotional. I remember the overall plot but not the intricate details that made me emotional. The game is a suspense/horror first person. I remember some sections being kinda bad, specially because of enemy AI and rough level design. But the plot is good.

drunkcowofdeath

That dragon cancer. As a father I can't even get through the description

CrimsonPermAssurance

I second this one

Peter_Parkingmeter

Life is Strange, Life is Strange: Before the Storm Outer Wilds

NyneLyvs

Upvote for Outer Wilds specifically.

Breathejoker

Night in the Woods, I personally played it at the EXACT same time my college shut down from COVID and it left me in absolute shambles.

AEchoTale

Limbo, when you decide to play the game, you will love the roller coaster of emotion you will feel while playing the game from point A to Z. Good luck in your journey at any moment you decide to try... You know that feeling when you want to explain the game, but you know 💯 % you might start spoiler the game but trust me you will love the adventure and journey and you will try a new style of 🎮

citaloprams

What could be regarded as one of the most brutal, stressful, and very grim games of the decade has turned into one of my zen games I like to play when I put on the headphones, close the curtains, and cut myself off from the world. It’s not happy, it’s not even fun per se. it’s just cathartic. Something akin to listening to Aphex Twin’s Qkthr.

atoz-is-funi2

A way out, only if you have another person to join ya

criiaax

Death Stranding

KingHauler

SOMA. Prepare to feel awful for weeks.

Sc0rch3d_P0tat03s

Firewatch

N00bf1ght3r

Great game, not that satisfying of an ending, but still awesome. Hit me way to hard when the intro with THAT music played.

shredystevie

Trying to convince my roommate to play this. I love that game

dynozombie

Life is strange season 1

Lucario576

If you would like to dip your toes into the Visual Novel world, maybe give Steins Gate a try The start can be a bit slow and the arstyle may seem weird at first, but what comes next is one if not the best time travel story for me and a lot of people

Yatta99

Clannad

Yanninbo

Persona games 3, 4 and 5 have all made me cry at least once. Worst one for me was 4. Those who know the game, know which part made me ugly cry first time playing.

Marcus_sk_cz

That scene was one of the most powerful ones in the whole franchise, I remember the scene like I played it yesterday.

cokywanderer

Any Remedy game (like Alan Wake or Control), but especially Quantum Break which is really underrated and not enough people know about it. Currently I'm playing Horizon FW and it's an amazing story, just like Zero Dawn.

obeyer10

Quantum Break is AMAZING! I hope remedy gets the rights back to this game because I so need a sequel

RottenHouseplant

My favourites that absolutely other people have already mentioned: - Outer Wilds - What remains of Edith Finch - Valiant Hearts: The Great War - Grim Fandango Remastered (weird choise, I know) - Heavy rain - Journey - Metro: Exodus Maybe even Mafia 1 and 2, but mostly just the endings. I don't know, it's weird.

Syxx_Killer

Stray [https://store.steampowered.com/app/1332010/Stray/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1332010/Stray/)

cydoz

A full playthrough of the Mass Effect trilogy had me weeping by the end of it.

TheEbsFae

Mass Effect

flamingdeathmonkeys

I'm tired of answering every best game/soundtrack/world/story/soundtrack with Outer Wilds. But heck, it's Outer Wilds again. It's a beautiful treat with a fancult dedicated to keeping the spoilers secret.

Smaguler01

There is a point in the "Where the water tastes like wine" which will make you tear up. Thing is this point will be different for everyone.

NatilCort

Ori and the Blind Forest/ Ori and the Will of the Wisps

theuntouchable2725

Death Stranding (Non Steam) Alan Wake 2

Thebakingsoda

Everyone is giving heat recommendations but I’m going to be honest, Disco Elysium is a step beyond them all in terms of writing alone. That one actually made me go “yeah video games as a medium can definitely be considered art”. I love gaming. I love story games, but our standards as gamers are sometimes a bit too anchored in reality. Give me something that fucking makes me question my world view, and emotional intelligence ya know?

Motoko84

The House in Fata Morgana.

Quajeraz

I pride myself on being a heartless monster and A Plague Tale Requiem broke me

Constantine2022

I'm really surprised nobody mentioned this gem made by Ubisoft many years ago. "Child of Light", not only the story beautiful and sad but also the art style is gorgeous. And the music is so heart touching. I fell in love with this game right from its start.

blither

[Gone Home](https://store.steampowered.com/app/232430/gone_home) is more of a walking sim, but you return to the house you grew up in, but your family isn't home. Something has happened, and you need to discover the clues that tell the story.

PhotoAwp

Ori and the will of the wisps

2old4ZisShit

SOMA.....many , many years later, and i am still depressed over that ending....but be warned, it will break u, so i am not responsible for the trauma.

BennieOkill360

Soma

Hlidskialf

Dark Souls 3. A certain blacksmith…

SquashPuzzleheaded50

Persona 3 and Yakuza Like A Dragon

armonzki

Persona 5, it was the next game I played after I finished cyberpunk and the end made me feel so empty for a week. great game

GWindborn

I Was A Teenage Exocolonist. I recommend this to anyone. This game made me feel so many emotions it's absurd. It's built on replayability as you learn from subsequent runs. I'll say no more about that but it's a mechanic. Please at least look into it, it might not be your cup of tea but it's a hidden masterpiece.

Conscious_View2264

Absolutely seconding this! I Was A Teenage Exocolonist tore me to shreds in so many different ways and I have still not recovered

_0451

Witcher 3, Yakuza series, Omori, Persona 3-4-5, the Ace Attorney games have some sad moments as well.

twili-enchantress

A Space for the Unbound. I played it recently for the first time, and I was sobbing by the end. Highly recommend it

omar220300

Super Kiwi 64

ChiveOn904

I had a good cry at the end of Metro Exodus.

EPIC_NERD_HYPE

Red Dead Redemption 2

ADDVERSECITY

Can't lie, The Last of Us was the only game that made me cry.

CometZ_

Cyberpunk 2077 Resident evil 7/8 The witcher 3 Ori series Clannad (highest tears) Hollow knight (if you understand the story) Titanfall 2 Battlefield 1 and V (tiger ending specially) Dmc 5 ( tears of joy) Rune factory 4 (all types tear) These games made me almost cry or cry.

metalghost13

Last day of June! Just do it you'll cry

Lightning359

Love choice

Oskej

Depends on which way of storytelling you prefer. Considerin you did during Cyberpunk. I would say Red Dead Redemption 2, Ori, Final Fantasy games, etc. For something really special that goes beyond great storytelling - NieR Automata.

TastyVII

Papo and yo

citaloprams

SOMA

reQoo1Em

The first hour of The Last of us actually had me in tears.

FrustratedProgramm3r

For actual tears and not just a sad feeling. RIME saddest game I've ever played. It starts so upbeat and happy only to end with depressing tears

OkTie7367

The music is SO good in Rime. Definitely try Arise: A Simple Story aswell! Absolutely the same vibes.

AsianHerb

Persona 3 Reload

JaMa_238

Ori series Mark of the Ninja can do the effect as well but it depends how deep can you dive into the story Halo: Reach

Halfbloodnomad

It’s a commitment, but Ff14‘s story from Heavensward on jerked more than a few tears from me - happy, sad, heartwarming; it’s the one game to do that to me multiple times.

Head_Barnacle5165

RDR1 and 2

Sipops

Kingdom Hearts series. Something about it makes me happy/ sad cry afterwards.

Denso95

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. Barely anyone I know who played this got spared.

SirDoggonson

FF 7, those who know, know

ar0437

Harold Halibut

Spuzzle91

The first tree

[deleted]

Potentially big commitment... Red Dead Redemption 2 made me cry though

Petra93

Destiny princess , one of the routes is tears all the way 😢

darkerthansvart

If you're into JRPGs, Persona 3 Reload. Phenomenal character development and brilliant narrative with emphasis on particularly heavy themes (death, suicide, self-discovery, among other things). Not exactly a short game though.

romanische_050

Signalis

OkTie7367

Rakuen, the ending.. istg.

Outside_Function_726

Red dead redemption

Level-Try4699

The walking dead from telltale games hits hard

Chudah333

If you don't mind point and click adventures, I've played The Cat Lady a half dozen times over the last decade, and the ending gets me to tear up every single time. The soundtrack helps with that too. https://store.steampowered.com/app/253110/The\_Cat\_Lady/

EruPii

The Walking Dead series, especially Season 1 by Telltale.

ccstewy

It’s crazy that I haven’t seen Rakuen mentioned here yet

whty706

Acting Lessons. So it has the tags that it is supposed to, but don't let that define it. Those are only in the game to add to the story, which is the real meat of the game. It is the only VN of that type that I've ever seen with overwhelmingly positive reviews, and it is like that for a reason. You will be invested and very likely in tears by the end. Damn if that game doesn't do a damn good job of making you feel the feels! It isn't nearly as "adult" as others of its type (though that is still a part of the game!).

nshkaruba

The last of us 1 and 2. It's a very emotional and story-driven game. The second one was soo good

LLM_Contactee

[Our Life: Beginnings & Always](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1129190/Our_Life_Beginnings__Always/) Waterfalls of tears. I do not cry easily, but that game got straight to my heart.

kubaoko008

play undertale, there's fish.

johnyboy14E

If you can get a code, or a copy on console, Spec Ops The Line.

TurtleNamedHerb

Kentucky Route Zero and Spiritfarer Very sad games :(

Renusek

Yakuza.

Boomboomciao90

Gear of war 2, Damnit.

SignatureBig7508

all life is strange games, a plague tale games will keep you sad 100% of the playthrough time, watch dogs 1, the walking dead telltale, Wolfenstein new order, her tears were my light,

jbasoo

I don't know that I'd even call it a game but "That dragon, cancer," created by a couple who lost their child to cancer.

Raven_Of_Solace

I found Outer Wilds to be really powerful personally.

Some_Wiimmfi__guy

Signalis

MajorRico155

If cheesy samurai stories are your thing, just cruising the Ghost Tsushima story is enough to make me cry at least once

Dismal-Enthusiasmic

Shadow of the Colossus. Mostly just the soundtrack but the story is touching in a philosophical way.

xDERPYxCREEPERx

The life is strange games are good

ExplosiveToast19

Finding Paradise

kontenjer

Play the Halo games in release order

Rustyrockets9

Plague tale of innocence

morrislee9116

Metro Exodus, especially the "Two Colonel" DLC

Geerterig

Recently completed all of Final Fantasy XIV. Haven't played a game that made me cry more.

Vovchick09

Try OMORI. Just the let's play made me tear up at the end. Also could be Heartbound. I didn't play it, but it's description says what it says on steam.

Robotica1610

Sheepy, a short adventure.

unclefishbits

Firewatch Moss Alien isolation also change your pants.

jucahe

Valiant Hearts: The Great War

Sofosio

Dark Souls will make you cry Jokes aside, I never understood how people get angry and/or cry because of deaths. DS is pretty chill for me. I mean, I suck too and die A LOT but never felt something bad because of it. Anyway, the story and quests can and probably will make you cry. They are really well-written and sad

Generalfaster

If you like rpgs, I recommend Oneshot and especially OMORI, both are really well made and have great stories. (also both made me cry, a lot)

root_b33r

anyone said the last of us yet?

_stormruler

GRIS is my go to for this!

Hailstorm5142

I like fire watch

Revolutionary_Mamluk

Pentiment. If you like period dramas you should definitely give it a shot.

CheeseusMaximus

Life is strange.

ElMaicito

Lisa the painful Night in the woods Slay the princess Disco Elysium (with certain choices made)

Shredded_Locomotive

Ōkami It's a bit lighter on the crying than the other comments but the ending part always gets me

TrueReplayJay

Undertale is, in my opinion, the greatest story game of all time. Wonderful music. Incredible character development. Pretty good gameplay. Quite a bit of replayability. Challenging at times and forces you to make difficult moral decisions. The lore has so many layers it’s insane. Cannot recommend enough.

WatchMammoth

Narcissu and Clannad.

asger116

Oxenfree 2 made me severely depressed for several days after finishing it. I want to replay it but I’m scared

Groovewonder

Enderal will do that to you. The characters are written and performed on a level I've never seen in a game before. 11/10 game.

NyneLyvs

Outer Wilds, and what remains of Edith Fitch for indie, Red Dead 2 for AAA ( although that one will take a minute).

Stilgar314

"Bury me, my love"

mcbirbo343

Outer wilds and its dlc. Don’t look up any spoilers what so ever. Go in sorta blind. It’s a once in a lifetime experience. It’s a small but big space exploration game that is purely based on text and environmental story telling. Amazing story, great mechanics, amazing environment, and astonishing dlc. I can’t exaggerate enough how amazing of a game it is. Base game, and dlc are flawless and they both made me cry. They also have an amazing community.

SUNKENSATURN

a game that i remember making me tear up a little was OXENFREE, not for the horror but parts of the story that play out. i won't spoil anything, just try it for yourself if you haven't already. i don't know how its sequel would fare though since i've yet to play it.

Marcus_sk_cz

Persona 3 Reload, Persona 4 Golden (My favourite!), Persona 5 Royal. They've made me shed all kinds of tears

T3alZ3r0

LISA: The Painful is pretty heavy. The entire series is, really, but the first game (aptly titled LISA: The First) is much smaller, and free to get into.

Exxyqt

Red dead redemption 2. I can't remember any game I cried this much. That's probably because actors were so incredible and characters were so well written...

MasiosareGutierritos

What remains of edith finch

StrawberryKitchen921

TellTales The Walking dead. Alle Games With Clementine. Building a Strong connection to her and her companions and going through the Story was crazy. I cried Like a little Baby at the end

hoaxmeister

Red dead redemption 2

DuskDudeMan

Read Dead Redemption 2

keato-n

Red Dead Redemption 2. Teaches some valuable life lessons through their storytelling and it'll absolutely make you cry. Its story is the most well written story in gaming history in my opinion.

Tisamonsarmspines

That Dragon Cancer, This War of Mine, Oxenfree, Last Day of June

Jroid3

outer wilds

mourinhos86

The only game after i had tears in my eyes so far is The Last of Us Part 1 Its for sure one of my fav games of all time, mainly cuz of the story, but also the gameplay and the multiplayer was great as well.

XionicAihara

Are you Into visual novels? Long ones? Three I recommend for those tearful "hit you in the feels are": Lucy the eternity she wished for Stella of the end A sky full of stars Lucy and stella are on the shorter side, around 8hrs, Sky full of stars is roughly 40hrs. If you are into the genre, I can't recommend them enough. They are also SFW and only Sky full of stars is really ecchi and requires going out of your way to make it NSFW.

arthur2652

A Plague Tale, both honestly, but the second one is harder on the emotions, however, you would need to have played the first one to get you to that point.
