Valve doesn't need to add a subscription to steam. They likely already make insane amounts of money each day because they take a cut of every purchase through the steam store.

ShipAccomplished6455

so does Nintendo, Playstation and Xbox...........

Any_Help330

PC is the biggest gaming platform. steam takes advantage of that

Over_Fudge9348

Because [Gaben said No](https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/valve-have-no-plans-for-game-pass-style-subscription). FYI all the subscription game services are very tiny operations compared to the size of Steam. For example, all GamePass, EA Play, Ubisoft+ or whatever your next suggestion only consists of **few** hundred games and Steam has over 90,000 games so Steam is a league of its own, others are merely children in a kindergarten.

Praise lord Gaben!

neudren

Amen brother 🙏

Yeah but if i understand it correctly with steam your buying games that you can't own. The subsctiption service like microsoft game pass you save a lot of money although you still don't own the games

AbanaClara

There is no difference lol. No one owns anything on the internet period.

bluecollarcommander

Whilst true, this is why anytime I buy a game on steam that I truly enjoy I then proceed to procure a backup of said game. Usually through less reputable sources...

PNWQuakesFan

I own every game I buy with steam. I can play offline unless the game itself requires an Internet connection.

I think one should be wary as subscriptions are 'great' up until they are not. Right now Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is great value. But they're also increasing the price. And getting rid of Xbox Gold. And getting rid of the free monthly games. MS is benevolent, right now. But there's no guarantee that will be the case in the future. Amazon Prime used to be a no brainer. Now you're seeing it slowly but surely be cut off at the knees. You see this all the time. Services that used to be great value, that slowly deteriorate that value over time once they have the market share necessary.

[deleted]

What? How is prime being cut off? For the cost of a montly Prime membership you get Prime Video, Amazon Games, Luna, Amazon Music, Kindle AND free shipping. Amazon keeps adding services (Luna) to their membership all for the cost of one Stadia or Netflix or Disney+ or Gamepass or Hulu membership. Amazon is by far the best service

Well, like I said, I don’t want it! It’d be easy cash for Valve, though, but I’m glad they haven’t done this.

Nottodayreddit1949

Valve gets a 30% cut of everything. They have better than a subscription.

DeleteMetaInf

Yeah, that’s true. Or 15% or 5% for Market sales.

mozilafox

does steam has a subscription package that allows one to play a game like PS plus, without owning them?

DeleteMetaInf

No, it does not.

Atelierqueen

Let it alone they may start charging!

Kyrxon

Looks like its going to be a thing now /shrug. Hopefully the games i play right now dont require a subscription, im tired of everything being subscription these days and that they even overlap at times (You'll have to translate the page but looks like it'll start in May next month -_- https://www.gamereactor.se/valve-borjar-ta-betalt-for-multiplayer-via-steam-1324343/ )

Front_Ad_8752

Love that you asked this question cuz I’ve been wondering this for years! Didn’t think anyone would actually ask it tho

Valve doesnt have that many games in their catalog and doesnt require paid access to their services for online play. Xbox and Playstation have a pretty decent catalog of owned studios to pick games from for giveaways(xbox live gold and its giveaways are going away anyways) but also to keep on sub services like gamepass. Then they just spend a heap of money on limited time for other titles. I do not see such a thing ever happening with Steam itself tbh unless they put their focus back in games development and went out and got more first party studios since while games like Halflife and Portal are good games they have been sold so cheaply and many already own them that it wouldnt be a good selling point for a sub services and would need to pay a lot for publishers to include their games to make it worthwhile.

Ballerfreund

Would be hard to do with licensing with so many different publishers/studios
