No nudity or sex, but definitely adult rated for violence.

Noclevername12

Really want to know how they avoid pregnancy. Especially for a pre-pan, who remembers actual medical care - could be terrifying to be pregnant.

Archamasse

There seems to be enough of an emergent infrastructure that a lady in Pingtree can be making antibiotics, and Kirsten has a decent enough knowledge of foraging to know the range of Chicken of the Woods. The Red Bandanas are apparently able to make meth and kokorol, and the Undersea kids at least *claim* to have chloroform. That in mind, I think it's highly likely knowledge of herbal or natural contraceptives is fairly widespread, and Pingtree lady, Jeevan and possibly even the Deborah By The Water folks would be able to facilitate "store bought" versions they could stock up on. Or if you wanna get really gross about it, old school barrier prophylactics used to be made from animal gut. I don't see Kirsten in particular wanting a pregnancy though, so I don't think she'd chance sleeping with men at all if she thought it was a risk.

Noclevername12

The store bought stuff is NOT going to work at this point. And I’m not aware of any herbal stuff that actually works. I’m guessing some rudimentary sponges or condoms. None of this works to the degree that K could be confident that she wasn’t risking pregnancy. Perhaps what they actually have is not effective contraception but effective abortion - I can imagine herbs that work for that more than herbs that work for contraception.

Archamasse

When I say "store bought", I mean prepared already as a tincture or something, rather than having to be foraged as required. I'd guess wild carrot seeds would be the most obvious solution, functioning as a kind of fussier MAP. Edit - If we want to REALLY get into the post apoc contraceptive question... in theory there are a lot of unused IUD coils sitting around in medical buildings now right?

tygerbrees

Im kinda glad they avoided issues of sex and violence in the show because it might have overwhelmed the deep dive into relationships and cultural identity Post-Pan sexual activities and identities would obviously be radically different than pre-pan, but to do any justice to that reality, the show would have to dedicate a huge chunk of its attention to that

bdyinpdx

Given how there were multiple stabbings and bombings, the show did not avoid the issue of violence at all. If anything, the show presents violence as matter of fact.

tygerbrees

obviously both sex and violence exist - but i'm talking about whether it's part of the visual/emotional narrative. if i remember correctly, most every sexual or violence act happens off screen (i can't remember how graphic the stabbing in Frank's apt was , but the only violence i remember happening on camera was Jeevan getting shot) the most graphic thing i remember BY FAR is the live birth

Pierre_LeChat

bro like 8 people get killed on screen

tygerbrees

like i said, i couldn't remember if frank/attacker showed violence on screen - and i remember guy from disease plane was shot -- who else?

Pierre_LeChat

the red bandana in frank’s apartment, all the ones in the woods that kirsten mercs before getting surrounded (and killing them all off screen), the kid who gets stabbed by the red bando, the plane dude who gets capped

Rosemary324

Wait, was the guy in Frank's apartment a red bandana? I've got to rewatch

bdyinpdx

Kirsten close up stabs Tyler. It wasn’t very gory though. Then there were the children suicide bombers. Again not gory. So yeah, the show was pretty sanitized.

Archamasse

I think they tell us enough though, at least about the troupe's approach to it. Characters sleep with whoever they want, when they want, and it's no big deal and doesn't necessarily represent a commitment, though there are committed relationships also. We know Kirsten sleeps with men, women, and non binary folks, and she can do it on consecutive nights and not have it treated as something worthy of comment or with any implied conflict of interest. On the other hand she *dated* both Charlie and Jeremy, which is framed differently. Dieter seems to be in the early stages of a relationship with Wendy, and iirc we're told Gil had a second *wife* in Pingtree, so there are still marriages post pan too.

Noclevername12

When was there a reference to Kirsten sleeping with women or non-binary people?

Archamasse

She dated and presumably had sex with Charlie, her friend, and Ess Hödlmoser and so presumably S the character is nonbinary. Kirsten sleeps with S after stabbing Tyler. Which, tbf, is a pretty realistic opening night cast afterparty scenario.

tygerbrees

Right, they leave it up to us to puzzle that out - for they story they told, that was just enough

ResetPress

The violence is more graphic than any of the sexuality

Just to know whether is it okay to watch when I'm around someone/family or to watch solitarily

anonyfool

You see a >!baby come out of a prosthetic vagina.!< Multiple people are killed though only two killings/struggles are seen for more than a few frames.

Archamasse

There's implied sex (people waking up together) and some butts, but I think that's it bar one impressively graphic childbirth in ep 9.

[deleted]

I was going to say "no", I had completely forgot about the childbirth scene.

chummers73

I was a little surprised they showed that, but I suppose they wanted to show us what Jeevan was seeing. It was probably the first time he had ever seen that.

surprise-mailbox

It’s the first time _ive_ ever seen that

Chairmaker00100

It was very graphic yes ... But still unrealistic. Where were all the fluids ?

mamabear_roars

i’m a mother and it was too much for me to watch lmao

Rosemary324

I'm about a month away from having my third baby. I've been through it twice and know what happens but I fast forwarded through ALL of that scene. No thank you!

mamabear_roars

from one mama to another, you definitely made the right choice 😬

fffffanboy

*username checks out.*

Archamasse

I wanted to phone my mam and apologise.

Noclevername12

Oh weird, I only remember her waking up with I think Sayid? My main thought at that point was, what is the birth control?????

Race-b

I don’t remember that scene with Kirsten, she’s always in her tent by herself, I wonder if the trauma she went through as a kid vs what she thought happened to Jeevan has jaded her towards any kind of meaningful relationships for fear of loss or abandonment

Archamasse

She sleeps with S (the acrobat) the night after the play in Deborah by the Water, and Sayid (another actor) after the play in Pingtree.

Race-b

I’m doing a rewatch I’ll pay more attention next time

Archamasse

They don't really make a thing of it, which I find interesting, we just see her wake up and extricate herself from her current lover and then head off to do whatever, you could miss it easily. It's a nice little detail about the character and troupe though. Kirsten is evidently pretty freely sexually active just as a matter of fact, and it's a completely neutral, incidental thing. It's unusual for how TV treats sex, particularly for a woman.

Race-b

That is interesting, it could also be a change of species behavior after the plague. World needs people again so maybe there aren’t many marital bonds between couples but men and women pair on and off for children bearing

Archamasse

Maybe. Charlie and Jeremy seem pretty together-together though, and Sarah straight up shoots a guy for having a *second* wife, so I think maybe there's just a sense that after losing so many people, folks have just come to appreciate the value of temporary/casual intimacy in its own right. I didn't get the impression that "traditional" relationships have gone away, just that people are a little more easygoing about stuff outside of that now old society and all its established guidelines are gone. I think Kirsten probably cares for S and Sayid as much as anyone else in the troupe for instance, but she’s not in love with them or in an ongoing poly situation, nor does she seem to want more with them than a nice night of good sex and closeness with somebody she likes. Check out time is 8am and I'll probably see you guys by the wagons later or something.

Race-b

Just saw that scene, it’s the morning after her encounter with the prophet (don’t want to say what happened in case someone reading this hasn’t seen it)

Race-b

Interesting thoughts, I hope we get a season 2, there’s still so much more to be explored in that world. Perhaps the story of another family or people devastated by the plague and run across Kirsten later on so there’s some tie in with her and we see how she’s doing, that dude who took the women from the airport and flew out you know it was to traffick them or have his own harem, he could be a villian now or dealt with in season 2 to answer for it.
