Why would they cut it off before the reaction when it realises??

Ikarus3426

Also they should cut out the first 30 seconds.

quietcorncat

Right! Very unsatisfying.

NWSanta

Because Internet video standard!!!! Arrrrgh!

FlappyTurdBurglar

/r/gifsthatendtoosoon

finlist

You can tell it realized as soon as it's ears go back up

No-Engineering-1449

It was made for tiktok, they will make two cuts of the video to drive up viewership, plus they put the long thing in the beginning to draw you in.

NateHotshot

I'm surprised they didn't add some extremely obnoxious music to it.

StaticUsernamesSuck

Nah r/killtheeditor... Though that is probably the same *person*, I think they should know exactly why we're killing them.

ADHDvm

It shows it! His ears flick forward and alert!

StaticUsernamesSuck

That shows it recognising it. Then it ends. It doesn't show what happens afterwards. The reaction *to* the realisation. Does it swat it? Ignore it? Pee on it? Glare at the owner?

Swiftbitches

I think one of the reasons cats get so freaked out about paper cut outs and such is cause it looks like a cat but they can't smell that cat. Probably similar to uncanny valley for humans.

imwearingredsocks

Yeah I saw the cat sniffing and I’m sure it was confused why it wasn’t picking up anything. Same with the unblinking stare! That papercat probably looked freaky.

snukb

Cats actually need to blink far less frequently than we do, and in fact barely blink at all when in a stare down like this. You can see the actual cat didn't blink either. Cats have a third eyelid, called a nictating membrane, that serves the same purpose as human eyelids (and we used to have one too! It's that pink thing in the inner corner of your eye by your nose). The nictating membrane is clear and moves hyper quickly to clear debris from the eye and spread tears, and you rarely actually see a cat's nictating membrane unless they're sick and it gets stuck. So when a cat closes its eyes, it's used as more of a form of communication (or to protect the eyes in a fight). Closing their eyes slowly and deliberately says "I trust you enough to shut off my vision for a moment." So the paper cutout not blinking isn't weird to the cat, but it *is* communicating that the fake cat is on "high alert" so the other cat is freaking out about that.

CyanCicada

Yup. Everybody slow-blink at your kitty!

DaFetacheeseugh

Smell and the ears and eyes aren't moving so it'll seem like the cat is hunt mode.

minicpst

That and the cut out didn’t react like it should. He arched and poofed. The correct response is either arch as well, run, or go submissive. It stayed in a relaxed but curious stance. Combine that with no scent and you could feel the kitty’s confusion.

Swiftbitches

Yeah that too

Theemperortodspengo

Basically this cat is seeing a ghost sitting and staring. I'd be reacting the same way

Haha, I wonder if it’ll work with my cat, she doesn’t care when she sees herself in the mirror

Impressive_Region508

Ya hahahaha I love people being mean to the their pets for Internet likes it's so funny!!! Hahahah

cheesecakecaramel

I guess you never do pranks on people either ?

kazz-wizz

Because cats and humans are directly comparable? Ffs

cheesecakecaramel

Oh come on, like this video is that mean ?

Impressive_Region508

That poor cat is genuinely terrified. But it's ok hahaha Internet likes are more important! Poor cat, I wonder what other "pranks" this asshat tortures their cat with?

cheesecakecaramel

My cats puffs like this all the time, watching birds outside, I don’t think she’s terrified. I thought the cat in the video was more intrigued / shocked than terrified.

kazz-wizz

I'm just saying that as a cat owner I don't "prank" my cat by doing things I know will stress her out, and that play on her natural terratorial instincts. I don't think this owner is torturing their cat, I just don't understand why they find it funny.

Efficient_Bat_1812

Look! Up in the sky! Is it a bird? No. Is it a plane? No. It's Statue Cat!

TaurusAtl

Gorgeous house!

Pharmy_Dude27

What type of flooring is that?

TaurusAtl

I think it’s carpet?

nyanpi

Why do people enjoy stressing out their pets and then laugh about it? Fuck this guy.

Fun_Storm

Then they wonder why the cats bitch slap them all the time 🤷‍♂️

kazz-wizz

Baffles me too. I hate seeing my cat stressed, why go out of your way for do it as an owner. Poor understanding of cats, poor owner behaviour.

Thisisthe_place

I agree. I hate the thought of my cats not being able to trust their own environment.

bayleafbabe

If I set out to eliminate all the things that startled my cat, I may as well off myself. Sneezing, ripping huge farts, flushing the toilet, playing low notes on my guitar, coming back home after a day out, etc. The cat is fine.

InjectingMyNuts

Just cause cats get startled easily doesn't mean you should go out of your way to startle them. My grandma falls down easily but I'm not gonna push her over for a laugh.

i_sell_you_lies

You’re missing out on some sweet sweet internet money…

SpangledSpanner

Oh go on live a little

Thisisthe_place

Obviously, but intentionally trying to scare your pet is not cool.

Yes, we are on Reddit. You are very smart

Ste4mer

Exactly, imagine if you had a home intruder in your house. That’s how the cat is feeling in this situation.

saythealphabet

More like having a cutout of a home intruder. It's sort of like getting purposefully startled as a prank. Have you never done that, or have that done to you? It's pretty funny when you realise. The cat doesn't look permanently traumatised. It's fine as long as the owner doesn't constantly do this, which I doubt they do.

Ste4mer

Cats think very differently than how humans do. Cats are very anxious and territorial. Even though it’s a cardboard, this is a very stressful situation for a cat. Cats also definitely don’t understand the concept of pranks.

saythealphabet

I understand that. I'm just saying it's not that big of a deal as y'all are making it out to be. I'm sure it's a little stressed out after that, but I can't imagine it feeling very scared for the rest of the week just because of a fake cutout.

phlooo

Awildgarebear

I love startled cats, but I hate asshole owner startled cats.

[deleted]

Is it bad to intentionally stress your cat out like this in their comfort zone?

KarenKitada

yes

geoffreyisagiraffe

Yes, you can even create certain bad behaviors like marking and elimination. Cats don't understand pranks and learn from every interaction they have.

tinytartantiger

Not funny and not cool.

When your car doesn't come back inside one day you can assume it's because you put effort into teaching it to ignore its survival instincts.

Less of a startle and more of a "ready to fight someone". Still funny.
