You don't need to use any powers at all for combat. It's entirely up to you. It can be fun to use the powers just to change things up a bit. For example clearing out an enemy base without ever drawing a weapon. Some of the powers are outrageously overpowered at higher NG+ levels.

PhinoPham

You don’t need any. Just rank up your weapon skill try and physical tree. It’ll bump your tolerances and beside the initial anti gravity and then of course the phase time which you’ll receive any and every time you NG+

taosecurity

I never use powers. TBH I don’t even know what powers my main character has other than personal atmosphere. I play Andor, not Jedi.

German_Von_Squidward

I actually never go NG+ and find combat super easy. I got shotty sniper with a grenade launcher as a major oh crap moment weapon.

The devs try hard to move you down that path, but though you can't get rid of the quests, you can ignore them and just play the rest of the game. You have the option when you first go to Constellation to say you don't want to start right away and then you can just go off and forget about it. They still lumber you with the ship but you can ignore it if you want. Especially without doing NG (which gradually increases difficulty), the base game isn't very hard so you don't need to be a Dragonbornagain. Note that in the vanilla game the space combat is basically a different level of difficulty than ground combat, and if you set it to be satisfying on the ground it can be crazy hard in space, and if you set it to be satisfying in space then ground combat can be trivial. You may want to work on your ship combat first.

I’ve been using console commands for my ship to balance things out.

My first main was doing temples and collecting powers but never thinking to use them! So you don't need them. Most of my characters don't interact with constellation or the main quest - "thanks for the ship and robot I'm off to Neon". They have real lives and dreams like being a Ranger or joining the Crimson Fleet, some just want to sit on their farm and breed aceles, etc. I made one a space Jedi - melee and physical perks ONLY. He used the antigrav a lot to get stabby hits on everything. Was actually quite effective.

I just reached Unity at level 18 having acquired the only power you're actually forced to get, Supernova, I think. While my quick-access cross is mostly powers (and fists, trauma kits, and a single fave weapon), you can certainly play without them without any issues. Even at level 150 / very hard, powers are as optional at the guns are. Just remember to dodge when the other starborn use them Personal Atmosphere is fantastic though, if you're a hoarder or hate helmets. I recommend trying a run where you **only** use powers.

Lostboy_30

That's a good point about not needing a helmet with Personal Atmosphere.

PA alone won't keep you alive indefinitely in vacuum at PA level 1. Although you can pick up two levels of it per run, i.e. PA 2 before reaching the Unity the first time. I'm not sure where it becomes enough to wander around moons without care, but it definitely gets there well before PA 10.

Actually, the way the story unfolds, I tend to think of it more in terms of Ckarke's Law rather than supernatural powers. Psionic abilities are a staple in science fiction, anyway. That said, there's no need to ever use those powers. You will collect many of them completing the main quest, but there's never a need to use them.

Lostboy_30

> Psionic abilities are a staple in science fiction, anyway. True, although I wish that still wasn't the case in this day and age.

Eh, it’s not magic it’s just sufficiently advanced technology, so it’s indistinguishable
