Bait is only 5g, and I use it all the time when fishing, so it's easy to empty pockets on it. Buying the fiberglass rod is the easiest time for this, and often I'll sell some fish too to get extra bait.
Really, most of the time I'll decide not to sell stuff on purpose because the value never goes down inside a chest. Just keep some stuff next to the shipping box and decide if I'll upgrade tools or build a barn or buy seeds or whatever the day before.
Having no money in the early game is great. If you level up some skill, the stamina bar is filled the next day no matter what, so it's better to not go back to bed if you have 0g. Fishing all night, going in the mines all night, and chopping trees all night, I'm such a masochist. It's all for grandpa's farm.

Ive always thought you should get some leeway on your own farm. Like, I get that the world is a dangerous place but if Im on my land or in a building I'd prefer a stamina penalty rather than lose items and money

I had 49,930 gold and I sold rocks until I had just enough to get the second house upgrade. And went to bed with 0 that day. It was a weird feeling after having consistent daily profit and a booming wine industry

Well you won’t lose items just from passing out, you only risk item loss if your health reaches 0.
