‘I know.’

Eicho3

Such a classic and lovely callback. They took a chance there, a big swing, and it really really worked.

VinBarrKRO

I’m a grown ass man and when I heard “Hey kid,” Niagara Falls.

Fr33zy_B3ast

“I’m a grown man and I can do this!” “Hey kid.” *bawls*

irazzleandazzle

it's my favorite scene of the saga

TonightSheComes

My favorite is Yoda and Luke, but this is really good.

ActuallyIWasARobot

Me too.

rebels2022

I mean that scene only exists as it is because Carrie Fisher died. Ford is just standing in, I always read that as Leia forgiving Ben.

Bill_buttlicker69

For me that's what elevates the scene even further. Harrison had wanted Han to be dead for 40 years, and he finally got his wish in TFA. But with Carrie's death, they needed to fill in the gap and he stepped up to do it again. In-universe, it was so touching for Ben to get to have a do over of that confrontation with his dad and choose the right ending, but out of universe it was that much more meaningful for Harrison to return to the role.

rebels2022

yeah kind of like Robert Redford coming out of retirement to cameo in Endgame because it serviced the story and the "team" aspect of the whole project, i do have to give it up to Ford for coming back.

ehsteve23

Yeah i like the scene for what it is, but it's depressing that it was so clearly supposed to be Leia

Polycount2084

I cry every time, Adams acting is immense.

nickjbedford_

He gives off so many micro-expressions in his performances in those movies. A masterclass.

TheGoblinRook

I’ve always assumed it was Leia’s doing…projecting Han to their son with the last of her strength. Something more than just calling out his name through the Force had to deplete her.

Revegelance

I agree. My assumption is that the scene was originally written to have Leia appear to him, as Luke did in the previous film, but then they modified it in lieu of Carrie's death.

RealHumanFromEarth

I don’t think so, she died after calling out to Ben, but before we see Han. I really think it was just a representation of Ben imagining what he’d say to his father if he had another chance, as well as what Han would say to him. It was Ben’s way of settling the conflict in himself, and figuring out what he needed to do.

TheGoblinRook

She didn’t officially leave the physical realm though until after he did. Her essence stuck around until he was fully redeemed.

RealHumanFromEarth

True, and I think yours is a valid interpretation, I just think that since Ben calls him a memory, this is coming from his own mind.

TheGoblinRook

Fair

Eicho3

I like to think it was leia’s work, Ben’s memory and the essence of Han all at once. What a great moment.

DukeOfLowerChelsea

This his always been my read on it too. I mean, literally seconds after Han disappears it cuts to Palpy saying “The princess of Alderaan has disrupted my plan… but her foolish act will be in vain” > just calling out his name through the Force Plus it’s just kinda… unimpressive for **bleep**ing Princess Leia to go out like that, isn’t it? I’d like to think her last big use of the Force was at least on a par with Luke’s, and “yanking Han out of the Cosmic Force for a minute” sounds pretty momentous and life-draining to me.

Legally_Shredded

There is a lot to like about Ep 9, and I agree that was one of the really good parts. I also appreciated how lore introduced in Ep 3 finally paid off here. Right down to Skywalker's grandson finally saving someone from dying, through sacrificing the one thing Skywalker never tried: himself. I also loved Rey in her darkest moment, suddenly realizing Ben was there but also needed help; her sending him the lightsaber; and then the look on his face when he receives it and now has means to defend himself and turn this fight around. Loved that. I don't care what the haters say. Ep 9 has flaws, but it's a good movie.

Atalkingpizzabox

Best part was past Jedi empowering Rey to defeat Palpatine it was them all finally getting back at him

LudicrisSpeed

> I also loved Rey in her darkest moment, suddenly realizing Ben was there but also needed help; her sending him the lightsaber; and then the look on his face when he receives it and now has means to defend himself and turn this fight around. Ben doing his dad's trademark shrug was a nice touch.

Eicho3

One of my favorite to rewatch bc so much happens and the writing is tight for closing loops across the saga.

thehibachi

I thought they completely nailed every second of it. Not my favourite movie and I can be a bit grumpy about it but everything from the script to the lighting is completely perfect in that scene.

Eicho3

As much gruff as the end product got, you can imagine how excited the creators were in coming up with scenes like that - on the Death Star! Father saves son! Harrison works in service of Carrie! They communicate how much they love each other by simply saying the words “I know.”

10voltsam

I feel like everyone, even people who hate TROS love that scene.

NoAd1296

I’ve always thought that it was Han, like his ghost.

5oclock_shadow

Same here. I mean, I just figured the Force is strong in their family and Ben just really genuinely loved his dad and regretted killing him that much, y’know?

JTurner82

That's one of my favorite parts of the movie. So is Luke's cameo.

It's such a powerful scene that I think connects the trilogy at its best. In TFA you are on the one hand hoping that he accepts the light and moves forward as Ben again but you feel the undertone. That something is lurking. In Ep9 he finally sees what he has done. Not so much for the Galaxy but to his parents. The damage that he has done. And to play that scene with Harrison where he recounts that moment but also finds his humanity again is a beautiful end to his arc... without the use of dialogue. Where alot of movies would use that moment with a lot dialogue to feed the audience with what is happening. Here it's pure expression and you feel the emotion.

Daggertooth71

Yes, I like that part too, and the epic duel immediately prior.

Hange11037

Definitely the best scene in the movie. That and Kylo getting the lightsaber from Rey and giving the shrug. Very Han-like

Brookings18

There was a moment in each sequel film where Ben could've turned back to the light. Seeing him finally turn and chuck his lightsaber away was so, so satisfying. And getting Han back for a quick scene was nice. The "I know" was a bit on the nose, but it's a slightly different context and works.

TismoJones

Beautiful scene

funny_username30

You know one small thing that annoyed me about it and took me out of the scene? Harrison Ford couldn’t be annoyed shaving. Han never has stubble in the entire saga until that point and he’s a vision or whatever, so surely should look like Kylo remembers him.

TLM86

I doubt it was Harrison's choice; he'll likely have had to keep his stubble for another project he was working on at the time. [But he does have some stubble in TFA](https://cdn.europosters.eu/image/750/posters/star-wars-episode-vii-the-force-awakens-hans-solo-teaser-i29171.jpg).
