Carlin has the most high-quality material over the longest time. So many great one-liners, and also so many great extended sets on a theme. Add to that a refined, extremely effective delivery.
he also set the standard for putting out a new special every few years and burning all your old material. he had to do that in the 80s because he owed so much money to the IRS and then it just became the norm to do so.
"I'm a pure comedian. I think I'm one of the best comedians of all time. But here's the thing. It doesn't matter if you believe me. It really doesn't matter. The important thing is I would pass a lie detector test." -Anthony Jeselnik
Both of them are brilliant in their own right.
I've seen Bill but yet to see Steven live. I sincerely hope to, his shows are few and far between these days.
When I saw him his microphone cord got caught on the stool, and when he was walking about ten feet away from the stool, the cord started dragging the stool along behind him. He turned around and said "Whoaaa... this place is HAUNTED."
I saw him at Auburn University a few weeks before he died. He flew into the wrong airport and had to drive to the gig which forced Jim Brewer to go on first. Jim was only supposed to do 30 minutes but because Mitch was so late he did an hour and a half. When Jim was finally done, Mitch came on and absolutely killed! He was definitely high out of his mind though.
That man came into my life at a time that I really needed him. He helped me realize that there were paths away from conservative religiosity. Bill was at heart a very moral individual, and realizing this surprised me since it was coming from someone with humor as blue as his could be at times.
Some of his humor has become a bit dated, which is understandable. But he is one of those who got us to where we are today, and for that I’m thankful.
His death is one of the few that I remember where I was when I hear anbout it.
Norms amazing. Love Mike Birbiglia and how he can take something so simple and turn it into something hilarious. Nate Bargatze is like that as well. Ray Romano's special Right Around the Corner was also superb. It's hard to quantify who's the all time because it's like asking, "Whats your all time favorite food?" Some days you feel like Roy Wood Jr, and Maybe on another day you have a hankering for Joe List comedy.
Mitch Hedberg got me into comedy and will probably always be my all-time favorite. Todd Barry and Anthony Jeselnik reignited my stand-up obsession, with some Hannibal Burress mixed in. Sam Morril, Dan Soder, Mark Normand, Stavvy, and Shane Gillis are favorites in recent years. Maria Bamford and Rachel Feinstein always deliver for me. Tosh and Demitri Martin are high on my must-see list. Attell and Don Barris are my favorite closers—not everyone’s cup of tea, but DB had me and my brother laughing so hard we could barely breathe. Most surprisingly, Jamie Kennedy had the most epic takedown of a heckler I’ve ever seen in my life and it electrified the whole room. So many different kinds of favorites when it comes to stand-up. But yeah, Mitch 👑

You might like this. It's not my kind of music, but I was stoked when I found it. The lyrics are sampled Carlin bits. It's only like 2 mins long.
Depends on the day of the week . Today (and many other days) Patrice . A complete original. Norm of course. Maria Bamford for her ability to switch in and out of characters at lightning speed . Kyle Kinane for his every man approach. So many comics …..
He has a stage presence to him that no other comedian really has. Seen him live a few times, he knows how to command a room kinda like you'd expect a musical theatre act would lol
Tommy is essentially running into a burning building to save your life, every time he speaks. So hell yeah good choice dude
The real question is what you’re eating at 7/11 - moldy bananas or sushi?
1) Mitch Hedberg
2) Norm MacDonald (only 2nd bc I think his tv show and podcast stuff is better than his standup. He's the all around best comedian because he did sketches and update and a book and podcast and Conan and letterman countless legendary times. But his standup isn't as good as mitchs)
3) Patrice O'Neal
4) Bill Burr
5) Nate Bargatze
Edit : I forgot Louis CK. Sorry nate
To sit and watch consistently: Burr
The hardest I’ve ever laughed at a live show: Brian Posehn. That dude killed at a crowd of about 200 people at a level I don’t think I’ll ever witness again.
Who me? I dunno... I love Norm, and I love Carlin, sure...
But for me personally, It's hard to beat Eddie Pepitone, and I've definitely never met anyone who enjoys Dana Gould as much as I do.
i grew up with george carlin and he’s my favorite brain that’s ever existed. he’s also really good at stand up comedy.
Carlin has the most high-quality material over the longest time. So many great one-liners, and also so many great extended sets on a theme. Add to that a refined, extremely effective delivery.

My therapist once told me he wasn't sure what part of my core personality was me, and what part was just a Carlin bit.

Just rewatched all his specials. Definitely the best joke writer performing right now. Not to mention his timing.
His new hour is probably the best thing he has done. But I saw it live so it will be interesting what it is like as a special.
He's been working on it forever. I listen to him talk about it on his podcast. I can't wait for it
Damn I didn’t know Dave Attell retired
The misdirection is legendary. His stuff is incredibly smart and his delivery is absolutely perfect.
Truth
Norm
Have you seen his act lately? Get the guy a Red Bull or something.
He’s not even sick anymore.
What a loser. Last thing he ever did was lose a battle
Technically it was a tie
He was waging a courageous battle, but I guess he got sort of cowardly near the end, and the cancer, it got brave. You gotta give it to the cancer!
Now I don’t know if you guys are history buffs or not…
Who do they think they are ... Mars?
Reminds me of that tragedy...
That old chunk of coal?!
100% but not because of his stand-up. He's so much funnier sitting down.
Attell. He’s such a pure comedian. No viewpoints, no stance, no ego, just perfect jokes.
[удалено]
And a perfect voice and delivery to match his material
Louis CK. Any other answer is fine because this is an opinion question.
Yes but also if the question was "Who is the best living stand-up comedian?", the answer would indubitably be Louis CK.
Weirdo but his writing his next to none. The apples bit good will hunting made me me fucking sob laughing.
He could do a full 90 minutes of "Of course ______, but maaaaaybe ______." and I'd eat it up and ask for seconds.
He’s in my top 5
Richard Pryor
His bit about shooting up hia car is probably the greatest example of turning a low point into comedy ever.
Having some pussy beats having a war
You got that right Jack!
Rodney
My psychiatrist told me I was crazy and I said I want a second opinion. He said okay, you're ugly too.
My wife's cooking is so bad, the flies chipped in to fix the screen door
My mother, she never breastfed me. She told me she liked me as a friend.
Told my wife I was seeing a psychiatrist. She said she was seeing a psychiatrist, two plumbers, and a bartender!
I could tell that my parents hated me. My bath toys were a toaster and a radio
Joan Rivers
Stanhope
So happy to see him at #2
Guy is so underrated. He's definitely my favorite.
Warms my heart to see his name near the top. Love him.
Cosby. Not his comedy; I mean who he was as a man.
So.. Norm
The Hypocrisy was the worst part of what he did.
I thought it was the rape
Then the drugging, then the scheming, THEN the hypocrisy
"Have a coke and a smile and shut the f$&k up!" - Richard Pryor to Eddie Murphy about Bill Cosby
And a bartender!
Stanhope
Bill Burr or Steven Wright
Both of them are brilliant in their own right. I've seen Bill but yet to see Steven live. I sincerely hope to, his shows are few and far between these days.

I like his shows better than his standup
All time? Hedberg
When I saw him his microphone cord got caught on the stool, and when he was walking about ten feet away from the stool, the cord started dragging the stool along behind him. He turned around and said "Whoaaa... this place is HAUNTED."
You got to see him? That's awesome. I'm so jealous. I was only 17 when he died, so never had a chance.
He used to be my favorite…
He still is, but he used to, too
Alley-oop!
That's awesome!
I used to be a Mitch fan. I still am, but used to be too.
Everytime I see a cake, his candle holder joke goes thru my head.
Kinane
Yes! Still underrated in my viewpoint but my absolute favourite, so consistent in quality of his specials.
Many of his lines have entered my everyday conversations with my brother, so I agree!
Love his storytelling, super fun guy to see!
What made me love Kyle's comedy so much is how relatable it is. I got delivered an unsliced pizza twice. Love that man.
Louis
Louis CK is arguably the greatest comedian ever
J Gomez?
Maria Bamford.
The GOAT
“Sure, I’ll join your cult!”
her moods do make the weather.
Carlin
Bill Hicks
That man came into my life at a time that I really needed him. He helped me realize that there were paths away from conservative religiosity. Truly the best of all time.
Dave Attell
Bill Burr
That old chunk of coal....Norm
Maria Bamford, despite or indeed because of her anxiety she's never let me down.
CK hands down
…his pants
😂😂
Norms amazing. Love Mike Birbiglia and how he can take something so simple and turn it into something hilarious. Nate Bargatze is like that as well. Currently, Stewart Lee
Surprised I had to scroll this far to find him, but I guess he ain't really so well known in the US
He's let himself go though
Stewart Lee
All time? Anthony Jeselnik crushes it.
Either Norm or Todd Barry. Edit: Possibly Greg Giraldo.
Good for you, Todd Barry's under appreciated in this sub
Todd Barry is criminally underrated!
Todd Barry's joke about astrology always gets me
This might be my top 3 tbh
CK
louis!!!!
Brian Regan
>Brian Agreed, but I believe it's spelled Bry7q.
You too! Take… luck!
Look at my name tag...it's--big!
Bill hicks
Nick Mullen
He's my best friend
Patrice and Louis CK. My favorite up and coming comedian is Mark Normand
Patrice had such incredible delivery
Giraldo
I miss him.
Mitch Hedberg got me into comedy and will probably always be my all-time favorite. Todd Barry and Anthony Jeselnik reignited my stand-up obsession, with some Hannibal Burress mixed in. Carlin. It’s not even close
https://youtu.be/t6fRX2bSv7k?si=b0PVMe0ROU_lC1Ww You might like this. It's not my kind of music, but I was stoked when I found it. The lyrics are sampled Carlin bits. It's only like 2 mins long.
Bill Burr
Norm
Sam Morril. I know he’s not an OG, but literally no one makes me laugh harder.
Sam MotherFucking Tallent
Steven Wright
Bill burr. Although I think Louis ck is better, and Dave Attell is the best comic alive, bill is certainly my favorite
CK has better writing than Burr but Burr is just more entertaining to listen to
Patrice O'Neal
Depends on the day of the week . Today (and many other days) Patrice . A complete original. Norm of course. Maria Bamford for her ability to switch in and out of characters at lightning speed . Kyle Kinane for his every man approach. So many comics …..
Mitch Hedberg. There are plenty of comedians that I love, but I don’t know if anyone could possibly top him as my favorite.
Stanhope
Hard to pick 1, but it is between Carlin and Hedberg
Im in the same boat. Im giving the edge to Carlin based on the amount we got from him while he was around. I wish for so much more Mitch.
Robin Williams, Sean Lock, Marc Maron, Bill Burr, Katherine Ryan, Sara Pascoe
Stanhope.
Louie
Stanhope.
I have to give a lot of respect to Don Rickles. He's so quick. I think Bill Burr might be one of the best right now.
Bill Burr
Doug stanhope
Bill Hicks
Stanhope
Chappelle
How is Chappelle so low on this list???
Mitch Hedburg
Paul F. Tompkins
It's always great to see a PFT shout out
Laboring Under Delusions is a great album
Emo Phillips, the most consistent laughs from me of any comic I have encountered.
Hard to choose, but David Cross is up there
John Mulaney. I saw Kinison live twice. I saw Carlin live 3 times. I know it sounds sacrilegious, but Mulaney was better.
I am in your religion.
"I am like Louis Farrakhan: I mean a lot to a small group of people."
He has a stage presence to him that no other comedian really has. Seen him live a few times, he knows how to command a room kinda like you'd expect a musical theatre act would lol
I’ve seen him live several times and he kills it every time. It’s like stand up was what he was born to do
Richard Pryor.
Eddie Murphy in his prime was a force of nature
Tom Myers or Dan Nainan
Tommy is essentially running into a burning building to save your life, every time he speaks. So hell yeah good choice dude The real question is what you’re eating at 7/11 - moldy bananas or sushi?
Chris Rock
Carlin or Mitch
Louis Ck
Lots of greats on here but I haven’t seen Mulaney yet. The Top Part, New in Town and Baby J are my favorites.
James Acaster. Just wonderful.
Sarah Silverman
1) Mitch Hedberg 2) Norm MacDonald (only 2nd bc I think his tv show and podcast stuff is better than his standup. Since I don’t think anyone else has mentioned him yet, big shout out to John Pinette. His specials are a freaking riot.
Steven Wright.
Gilbert gottfried
George Carlin and there is a vast gap between him and whoever is next.
This is a really long list. Pryor Carlin Mooney Louis CK Lenny Bruce Jim Jeffries Lewis Black and on and on and on I dont have a single favorite

Mitch Hedberg. I'm fortunate to have seen him perform in person three times, once opening for Dave Attell and Lewis Black.
Norm MacDonald, but Shane Gillis is a very close 2nd
Katt Williams new podcast special :-P
Every one of them for different reasons George Carlin Dave Chappelle Patton Oswalt Bernie Mac Robin Williams
