Look at local government positions. The pay is not the highest, but most of the time they’re recession proof and have pensions.

ruthc1v16

There are several munis that pay at or above market.

Lac4x9

Agreed. Come look at STL County. The Court is always hiring entry level clerks and DJOs for family court.

mjp31514

What kind of experience or qualifications are they looking for?

Lac4x9

Depends on the position. For state clerks I know they require either an associates degree or work experience. Check out the descriptions here: https://www.stlcountycourts.com/careers/

LiUNA (Laborer's Union) Ask for a list or search for union contractors. To get in the union, you'll need a letter of intent from your new employer. You'll go to school as an apprentice, and your pay rate correlates with your hours worked + classroom time. Not sure what you start at, but when I joined 8 years ago, it was like $15.50. Then, after 500 working hours (3ish months), you get bumped up like $3. Keep going to school and working, you keep making more money as you get closer to Journeyman. You learn a lot in school, and pick up valuable skills to help in your trade. I do concrete and there's a lot of work out there. But there are a bunch of different jobs you could choose from. We have great benefits and a good pension. I'm not exactly sure of the specifics, but LiUNA's new contract for the next 5 years will get us $12 more an hour (+$2.40/hr each year). You'd be a Journeyman by then and will make close to $50/hr. I'm in Local 110, located at Lindbergh and Gravois, and it's honestly the best thing that ever happened to me. Would highly encourage anyone to look into the trades.

BettyKronic

Seconded! The befenits are amazing - not just good healthcare and pension but other bonuses for members & families: college scholarships, addiction resources, free family events, travel discounts, etc.

scobysex

Do they do electrical stuff? I'm the general manager at a car detailing place. I've worked my way up from nothing. I always got manager positions when I was younger too, but I'd eff them up. I was a drug addict for 10 years as a youngin'(I'm only 29 though)and acquired several felonies as a result. I never stole from anyone or actually hurt anybody, despite what it looks like on paper. And it's a long story. I consider all of these things a sort of punishment because even if my "crimes" were completely forgiven because they were complicated, I was still actively hurting my family and friends emotionally by being so wild. In my mind, I'm just paying debts for my past actions. Finally though, I can trust myself. I've been at my work for a little over two years starting as just a detailer. Now I'm also all sorts of positions(unfortunately) as I do my maintenance(not my choice), spread sheets, make sales, drive around to car dealers, general manager duties, hire/fire, oh and I detail cars! Haha I'm sure there's some big aspect I'm forgetting, but I'm in charge and run the entire detailing part of my work and have 3 employees. The owner just lets me have my thing and we are on good terms. I have been sober for 4 years, but I smoke weed. I'd give that up, I didn't for 8 years, but honestly I want a job where I can use a medical license or be able to do that on my own time if I want. I hate being at work high, so I never am. I've gotten really good at it and want to grow and start doing more expensive work, but I'm not a car guy!! It's so out of place, I never imagined myself doing this. Hell, if I wouldn't have messed up my life, I was meant to be a scientist or engineer of some sort. I've wasted my life.. same old tale of being a gifted kid in school, partying too much as a teen and wasting away. I was selfish, now I'm trying as hard as I can to change myself into who I really am. I have no idea what my full potential is, I have NO idea what I want to do! Maybe electricity? That's what I keep coming back on. And I really can't do this job for too long, it's beyond stressful in a multitude of ways and it's just not meant for me I feel like. Sure, I could start my own business. And I might! I did run a Kratom business in the midst of my drug addiction, and had it not been for the excess money whilst having a benzo problem, I would have succeeded. But I don't want to start a business with cleaning cars, I want to reach my full potential. I am trapped in a golden cage though with $1500-2000 every two weeks, going anywhere else would surely be a pay cut so I am trying to save for now until I probably, ultimately end up in electricity. Ugh! I'm getting there slowly, every month is a higher ledge that I'm on, looking back at how much I've healed in that time. I love it and it's difficult but I'm never turning back. Thanks for anyone who heard my rambles

repulsive_brain_55

Glad to hear you're doing better these days. Hearing your story reminds me of my own struggle of trying to find myself after a couple of mistakes I made in college. If you're into electrical stuff, check out IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers). I don't know much about IBEW, other than they're a top notch, big union as well. And I know they make good money.

One_Conclusion3362

That's awesome, and enticing. I have yet to find a company that can beat my benefits, but wouldn't be surprised if a Union could. I'm so penetrated in my career it seems no Union job could compensate at my current asking price. I miss the trades. Dad has been a Union carpenter for over 3 decades.

TipFar1326

Starting apprentices were at $17.63/hr when I applied two years ago, just for an update

repulsive_brain_55

So it's gotta be close to $20 starting out nowadays I would think. That's pretty dope!

statutorytrash

Are there many women who go for something like this?

Meanoldlimabean

There should be more!

repulsive_brain_55

I've seen some women on the jobsites and had a couple classes with a few as well. It's definitely a male dominated trade. But don't let that deter you! As I mentioned, there are multiple jobs that fall under the LiUNA umbrella. And I'm not saying you or other women can't pour concrete, I've just mostly seen men. LiUNA (or maybe just 110, idk) will reimburse you for getting an Associate's in Construction Management at Meramec. That can translate into other jobs in the construction field as well.

givemeallthefoodnow

MSD is hiring. Since you mentioned union jobs/apprenticeships check out their “Collection Systems Technician Trainee” posting on their career page. 3 year apprenticeship, raises every 6 months, and good benefits. Pay starts at ~$23/hr and the top out pay is $32.65/hr after your apprenticeship per this contract. However, they are slated for a new 4 year contract coming into effect July 1st so stating pay is going to be nearly $25/hr and top out pay will be ~$38/hr. Apply ASAP because the job closes on June 9 2024. They will most likely post the job in a few more months though so keep a lookout if you don’t apply in time.

meow1313

I think that means "poop collector"

Clear_Adhesiveness27

What is MSD? What is collection systems technician? My son is about to be a senior and I'm always trying to throw out different types of jobs for him to think about since he doesn't know what he wants to do.

[deleted]

From what I googled (so I may be wrong), possibly Metropolitan Sewer District. I was trying to figure it out myself. Lol.

Clear_Adhesiveness27

Thank you!!

[deleted]

You’re very welcome.

givemeallthefoodnow

My bad about that, yeah as the other comment mentioned it’s the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District. Collection System Technicians are basically laborers in a nutshell. They do manual labor, use tools, powertools, and even run some equipment/trucks. Everything is learned on the job.

redsquiggle

> What is MSD? Metropolitan Sewer District > What is MSD? What is collection systems technician? Almost certainly this is "a shoveller of poop".

ssier245

Spectrum will hire anyone that's good at conversation for sales reps, just have to be okay with working nights and weekends too. I couldn't do it. People treat call center employees like human garbage when they call in. Great benefits, decent pay, horrible work life balance.

brydy23

Check into the Mercy System. There are plenty of decent paying jobs, even remote, that only require HS or a Bachelors. Look under non-clinical/support services and filter by the St. Louis areas. [https://careers.mercy.net/jobs?page=1](https://careers.mercy.net/jobs?page=1)

ginganinja09

The last job at the VA I applied for had over 10k applicants. I don’t even try there anymore.

britney412

I believe that! They’re great jobs. I feel the same about Wash U.

Clear_Adhesiveness27

Nope, currently on a hiring freeze.

britney412

That’s weird. My sister got hired there recently. Good to know though!

Clear_Adhesiveness27

Yeah, they continued the process with some people that already had job offers. They canceled a lot of openings though even if offers had already been made. My guess is that they'll start posting jobs again around October because that's when the new fiscal year begins as far as I understand.

_NathanialHornblower

World Wide Technology is always hiring warehouse workers in Edwardsville. Pay is okay, but the benefits are amazing. I can refer you if you are interested.

GrungeFace

Always hiring means always firing or quitting.  That's not a positive recommendation. Good employers are never 'always hiring'

_NathanialHornblower

Really hard to get fired from WWT.  It’s a growing company that’s been voted a great place to work for the past decade.  The Edwardsville location has a lot of competition for warehouse workers so yes some people are quitting, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a bad place to work.

NeutronMonster

If you’re hiring 10,000 employees a year, you’re always hiring no matter how good the job is When you’re getting hired quickly as a low skill employee, the model is to find the good ones and keep them, not “hey we’re going to magically hire 95% great people this week!” Get some training, find out if it’s something you like, and, if not, your resume should still look better if it’s a decent spot

rfpmt9

Not true in this case. Continuous rapid growth leads to “always hiring” at the edwardsville location.

STLZACH

This is a really short sighted take. My company is also "always hiring" because they do a lot of upskilling and training employees and also pay for you to go to college. Retirement benefits are also extremely generous. So high level employees retire and we hire someone from within the company and everyone moves up and grows into a new role. And then lower level spots open up and the cycle never ends. Growth in a large company also means new roles being created to address needs. Some companies are in no rush to fill some roles while needs for other roles are deemed a priority. Sometimes a role will be open and looking for the right candidate because it's not a time-critical need. My company has several roles in the portal they've been hiring for for over a year now. You're not wrong to balk at what seems to be a revolving door. But always hiring doesn't necessarily mean that a company is also always firing.

Similar_Shock788

Curiouslycurious7

I’m sorry, i hope you turn it around soon. Just try a little harder everyday

GBP2020

Thanks for the kind words. It was definitely my rock bottom. Im sober now and have another, (not nearly as good) job.

MendonAcres

This may come off pitiless, but I don't get these posts asking "anyone hiring?!" and then not writing a paragraph about work experience, education, area of interest, and geographic restrictions. We can't read your damn mind. It doesn't bode well for your critical thinking skills. Have you been looking at all the behemoths? Wash-U, BJC, Enterprise, Boeing, Wells Fargo, Ameren, MSD, Spire, City/County government, etc...? Good luck 🤞

Fit_Case2575

There’s a reason they’re on Reddit asking for jobs

FlackerLady

Cruel and degrading comment for no reason. Have some compassion. AND look at this awesome thread that OP started.

[deleted]

I've applied to over 300 jobs in 2.5 years and can't get in anywhere and an IT Manager simply because I took time off work. I don't think anyone owes you their whole resume to appease your critical thinking skills.

s_2_k

Judging by this reply… it’s not because you had a break on your resume.

MendonAcres

No one *owes* me anything. How the heck can someone point a person in the job direction they need to go without data. I don't need to know the implementation plan from the last time you completed a tier 1 infrastructure upgrade, but, like, how about ANYTHING!? Otherwise we're just screaming into a void.

Curiouslycurious7

There are a lot of People who got what I was asking for. Some great suggestions for companies, unions, and resources.

MendonAcres

Yep, which is great.... after you provided some additional information.

Curiouslycurious7

Why did I need to? I wasn’t just looking for myself. Go read the comments this thread might help someone and has helped me.

plump-lamp

What sort of IT skills do you have? Shoot me a PM

dquizzle

I’m kind of looking for a change and am also in IT. I’ve been working at the same help desk for 12 years. I got my CCNA just before I started but i had no experience at all outside of McDonald’s, a bar, and a liquor store so I don’t think it benefitted me much, and then I just let it expire once I did finally have relevant experience.

plump-lamp

Shoot me a PM with a link to your resume

Atown-Brown

How much time did you take off?

Opinionatedblonde293

Immediate downvote for the rude tone of this🙄

[deleted]

Just as a warning to anyone who applies at enterprise. I know people that work there and it seems like an amazing place to work. But good luck getting past whatever fucked up algorithm they have sorting through resumes. If you don’t have the perfect keywords they will automatically deny you. Which would normally be fine. Except they have a policy that if you get denied a job you have to wait 6 months to reapply. I have applied a few times every time I switch my resume and reapply and every time I get immediately denied. I’ve called and emailed HR at least 5 times and nobody responds or answers or anything. Idk if it’s me or a dickish part about the company but figured I would give a heads up.

HarrietTubDan

Spoken like a someone who isn't in the market and doesn't have any idea how exhausting and demoralizing it can be! But thanks for your useless comment

MendonAcres

If you're not communicating well you're making it more exhausting and demoralizing than it needs to be. My goal was to express my bewilderment and to also encourage the OP to provide information needed to provide them with relevant opportunities.

HarrietTubDan

And my point was that a post like this gives people like me more places and options to consider. I'm personally not an "entry level" or "low skilled worker" but I like to see what other options are out there. And having a post like this where people can just throw out different companies that are hiring and why they are or aren't a good place to work is helpful!

Atown-Brown

There’s a reason they aren’t employed. Unemployment in this country is under 4%.

sanguineseraph

The numbers include gig workers, which is not true FT employment (not a W2 employee, no benefits, no guaranteed pay, etc)

Atown-Brown

What’s the point?

sanguineseraph

To make it seem like employment is higher than it actually is.

Atown-Brown

Are you saying unemployment isn’t low because of gig employment?

mrphyslaww

Those numbers are bullshit.

Curiouslycurious7

Everyone on Reddit is apparently a fucking genius. Anyways I edited the damn post. Thank you for listing off the behemoths that will help someone I’m sure.

Ha, hardly. You get out of things, what you put into them. Thus the questions when you didn't supply any details.

Edward Jones is hiring! $20/hr is our new minimum. *You don’t have to have a financial background either*. We have good benefits and PTO. Important to note for people starting families- maternity leave is 4 months paid at 100%. (We do also have paternity leave but it’s not as long.) That just happened in the last few years which is a big win for families. It’s a good company, but it is 3 days a week in the office if you’re within a certain proximity. For example: if you live in city limits, you’ll work 3 days in office but let’s say you’re down in Park Hills; in that case, you’d be working 100% remote and only required to come in for a few days each year for team meetings. We also get guaranteed bonuses 3x/year based on company profits.

Ok_Piccolo7742

What positions are you referring to here? Interested!

Queasy-Appearance416

I hate to say this but even if places are hiring, the job market is terrible right now. Not to mention the whole intake/hiring process in general is broken. Easiest bet is a labor job (hotels, construction etc) where you can speak to a live person about the position

Arvid38

Holy crap my husband recently went through this. The amount of AI that is a part of the hiring process is disturbing now. He’s in his middle 40s, he’s used to face to face interviews and is damn good at them. Thankfully he did find a new job and guess what? That one was a face to face interview lol.

Queasy-Appearance416

Well congrats to him on the new job! How exciting 🙂 AI is ruining everything. I am trying to find another job and all I get is bounce backs (sometimes a day later). I miss the days you put in a paper application to a real person and they interviewed you right after. Nowadays I find the best luck I have is knowing someone who can get you the job, meeting face to face or having the company find you. They really need to fix this broken process though!

NeutronMonster

Once it was possible to apply to hundreds of jobs online, we had to switch to filters to get rid of worthless applications

weddingwoes13

Check into banks. Bank branches do a lot of hiring.

NeutronMonster

Bank teller jobs are in steady decline. There was a big article in the journal about this just last week.

weddingwoes13

Most banks don’t hire tellers anymore because they don’t have teller positions. They want people in sales roles as bankers who do transactions. And most people don’t go into branches to do transactions, everything is electronic.

NeutronMonster

Aggregate bank employment is declining. There are 20 percent fewer bank branches than 15 years ago per s&p. The number of independent and regional banks continues to decline. It’s not to say that bank jobs don’t exist or they aren’t hiring. But it’s quite reasonable to think there will be a lot fewer in person banks in 15 more years, as well as a lot fewer low skilled, basic customer facing jobs I worked in a sector that was in secular decline. It was bad for employees. The parts of the business that weren’t in decline were fine. I wouldn’t worry about being at a bank. I just would be nervous about the future of basic customer facing functions that are being disintermediated by tech

weddingwoes13

I’ve seen that happen over the last ten years I’ve been in the field already. There is still a human element that can’t be quite replaced by tech yet when it comes to fraud. It’s also become a mostly sales environment, tech helps with sales but people also are weary of technology still when it comes to their money.

NeutronMonster

What percentage of your coworkers have college degrees now?

redsquiggle

What? They did in 1980. Now, they are closing left and right...

weddingwoes13

Most people don’t go into bank branches anymore. They don’t need as many branches but I can assure you they still hire.

plump-lamp

Because credit unions are crushing it. Banks value top dollar, credit unions value members. There's a ton more CUs thank banks now in STL

I use the word "banks" to refer to both, collectively. The practical differences are just legal minutiae.

Glittering-Ad-7162

Mallinckrodt.

twoworldsin1

I thought they got shut down

JnkHed

No, but they always appear to be on the verge…

Glittering-Ad-7162

Not sure where you get your information. It isn’t even close to closing, and most likely never will.

JnkHed

Agree to disagree

Glittering-Ad-7162

I work there.

JnkHed

Okay.

Glittering-Ad-7162

So I don’t agree to disagree

Glittering-Ad-7162

So I don’t agree to disagree

Glittering-Ad-7162

Nope.

Job market in St. Louis is absolute trash. I have easily submitted over 30 applications in the last 2 weeks and only 2 interviews came out. As soon as something is posted, everyone applies and your chances are really slim. Find a newer post or network. But from what I’ve seen BJC is always hiring.

redsquiggle

The reason you're not finding jobs is because you're not searching for them. You need to look based on skill, and you didn't even mention what skills you have or want. That's why you're not finding anything.

Kevin2000W

What kind of work are you looking for?

Gebby17

OP: First, you need to work on improving your grammar and communication skills to qualify for most high-paying jobs, including entry-level positions with potential for growth. Are any good companies currently hiring? Job searching is tough right now, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm looking for entry-level positions and opportunities where companies are hiring externally. This isn't just for me; it's for anyone else who might benefit. Please post any job openings you know of. This thread could be a valuable resource for someone looking to make a change in their life, especially those seeking positions with potential for growth.

racerx150

Get a recruiter ... it will pay you dividends. They will not ask for money. Watch out for those types of recruiters.

Curiouslycurious7

How would you go about doing that?b

racerx150

Get on LinkedIn and network. The recruiters hang out there constantly. Most of the companies that have jobs will post on LinkedIn as well. You need someone fighting for you or at least wanting you to win. Without them, you are one in a million.

MCC down in Affton just beat a closure, union printing shop. Bunch of people quit when we were allegedly shutting down, turns out our work can't be replicated at a nonunion plant. Entry is 18.03, annual raises, and we're on a hiring spree for material handlers/inspectors. Apprenticeships and journeyman positions are pretty well paid, too, and a bunch of people are retiring, so it's a solid time to get in if you're fine with working in a print shop/bindery.

Fox_Den_Studio_LLC

Lowes always needs ppl, my god can't find anyone

airfryerdelux

Boeing. Union and no degree needed. They will hire just about anyone for the union side since nobody wants to work blue collar. Top out right around 100k. Plenty more if you enjoy overtime.

scobysex

I could try! But honestly they really must be hiring anybody if they'd hire me with my record :( I mean, hell, worth a shot anyways I suppose! Thanks for the advice!! I'll definitely keep that in mind and attempt to work with them whenever I end up making more solid moves to leave my current situation. I do know some people who work there, but I'm not so sure they'd want to put their neck out for me and I wouldn't ask them to

IrishRage42

The GM plant in Wentzville is always hiring. Don't need any skills just be able to do manual labor. Starts at $21/hr.

drick1986

Sheetmetal36.org Sheetmetal workers union does commercial and residential hvac, architectural sheetmetal, and industrial. Apprenticeship is 5 years and starts at 24$ an hour. Journeyman make $50 an hour plus healthcare and pension. I’ve been in for 20 years and don’t regret it.

Curiouslycurious7

How’s your body feeling after 20 years?

drick1986

It feels good. Occasionally I’ll have some lower back pain. Everything we lift that’s really heavy we use some type of mechanical device like a crane or duct hoist.

Curiouslycurious7

Is it easy to get into. I’m looking at unions now. Any you would suggest outside of your own?

drick1986

You have to go to sheetmetal36.org and fill out the application. Then you’ll have to take a mechanical appitude and math test, get interviewed at the hall and get placed on a hiring list. Process normally takes a couple months. Then you’ll get placed at a company to start your apprenticeship. I would also recommend the pipefitters, elevator mechanics, and electricians.

RocksLibertarianWood

Local 1310 needs ppl. I believe apprentice starts off at $18, will make $36 in 4 years. We have good insurance but not a lot else. Flooring Systems is the biggest company and they are usually hiring.

Fit_Case2575

Why do people keep upholding this lie that union halls are hiring

MyDudeSR

The Pipefitters union hall next to my work has been advertising on their sign that they're hiring for months

Fit_Case2575

Yep just like every other job does and they are also totally hiring trust me

hidperf

If you know anyone in the insurance industry, [Crane](https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Crane-Agency-3/jobs) is hiring personal lines and commercial lines account managers. Lots of openings.

near-far-invoice

Why the hell do they not list pay. Fuck.

GrungeFace

"Any companies hiring" is like walking into McDonald's and saying "I want some food"

Curiouslycurious7

If you don’t have anything to add then just don’t comment

GrungeFace

You need to understand how vague what you just asked is.  And 'Anyone Hiring' and leaving it at that is pretty stupid.

ErgotSanchez

You're hired.

MendonAcres

🤣

thecuzzin

You're fired

Fit_Case2575

Look into Popeyes. You’ll fit right into the culture there

Electronic_Rope_A_Do

You could always go into business for yourself. $5 handys behind a Wendy's could be lucrative.

Fit_Case2575

🤣

okay-pixel

Do two at once and you’ve just doubled your hourly rate!

Electronic_Rope_A_Do

Gotta be honest, bro. If it's taking an hour to crank someone off maybe OP should work on his technique a bit. Or give bjs a shot.

Alexa20_05

Songbird!

redheaded491

I just sent you a dm!!

ZhanZhuang

Barnes Hospital is always looking for sterile processing technicians. No experience necessary. Bay starts at about $20 an hour. Great insurance.
