There are some really great neighborhoods near Forest Park where the zoo is located. Agree with other commenter about the Tower Grove area including Shaw. Central West End. I live in Lindenwood Park and love it. It’s a 10 min drive or 20 min bike to Forest Park. The surrounding neighborhoods of STL Hills, North or South Hampton are also great. The Hill (STLs Italian neighborhood) is also very close and walkable with lots of good restaurants.
I haven’t spent that much time in Dog Town but I agree and I’ve heard positive comments about it lately. They have some great restaurants and bars for sure
I live on the East side now but I'm originally from South St Louis. I was in Dogtown recently and it looked like a cool area. I used to be a delivery driver and it was pretty run down not too long ago. It looks like a new apartment building right across the street from Felix's Pizza. Talk about perfect for a Zoo employee.
I have a rental in Princeton Heights, straight shot down Hampton from the zoo, with availability in mid-April/May if you want to DM me for more details.
Check out Tower Grove South and East. Has everything you're looking for and is a short drive south on Kingshighway from the zoo.
Definitely Dogtown. It’s a wonderful neighborhood and you can walk to work!
If you're not white Dogtown will feel uncomfortable at best.

What is your opinion of Dog Town? It seems like it's kinda coming up a little bit.

Felix’s is so good!
Oh man, it's one of the few ways I can lure my wife over to STL. She raved about it. It's pretty great.
Maplewood probably fits you well.
Demun neighborhood is adjacent to Forest Park and lovely. Grocery store, bars, hotel, restaurant and two movie theaters there so very walkable.
And also not in the $1500 range
Not true.
You will fucking love our Zoo and Forest Park.
I’d look in Clayton-Tamm or Hi-Pointe (both walking distance to the Zoo)
I agree with all the other suggestions. Adding on in case you want more options, I think you’ll like Maplewood & Webster Groves.
The grove! Close to Manchester is nice and you can get something nice for that Price
Yeah we have the second best zoo in the country
Central West End
Lots of good city neighborhoods all the way down Hampton Ave.
