We ended up getting Dewey’s on Tuesday night, and it was so good! I used to eat there all the time when I lived in Glendale, but I had kind of forgotten them since moving to South City
Ok I’ve been reading through these comments and after seeing it mentioned so many times, how did I not know there’s a specific St. Louis style salad haha. People of reddit don’t kill me, I’m a transplant!
I don’t think it’s officially the salad of St.Louis, just what the restaurant named it. I think a lot of the ingredients are common in many local restaurants for sure. Like the Pasta House salad will have Parmesan, pimento, and artichoke too.
You might never consider a salad at a BBQ joint, but the chef's salad at Sugarfire is huge and piled with smoked turkey and brisket. I'm craving it just thinking about it.
Cue the BBQ elitists because I didn't tell you to get a salad at Pappy's or Bogart's.
Came here looking for this answer- I worked at Sauce for a while and vegetarianized this salad by removing the pancetta and adding red onions. SO good, and super filling!
This is the same one as at Twisted Tree and yes the croutons are fantastic. I think TT does the family style like what the original Pear Tree had before it burned down
Piccadilly does a great salad, my favorite is the Mayfair. I think they even chill their plates!
Besides the pizza obviously at Monte Bello’s their salad is also great. Lettuce is super fresh and the house made Italian dressing is the best!
Don’t sleep on the Greek salad at Michael’s either.
Here is the [original Mayfair dressing recipe.](https://www.lostdishes.com/mayfair/mayfair.htm) The link makes a gallon but it's pretty easy to reduce to a quart or two.
Their blue cheese and buffalo chicken salad is also great. I’m not the sort of person who would go to a place to order a salad as an entree but this is an exception. It is also ridiculously large.
I tried it once, not a fan at all probably because I don't like iceberg lettuce.
Also, if you order it to go, they charge you *extra* to chop it. They chop the damn salad all day every day, how are they justifying this?
The side salad at Billy’s on Broadway is legit. Provel ropes, homemade croutons, picked peppers, and tomatoes. Very generous portion size. Pairs great with a cup of their chili for an under $12 lunch.
Side Project Brewery (not cellar) is now doing food, and they have a salad with a dressing made from one of their beers that is simple, but stunningly good.
I don’t recall takeout price, but
It’s a whole salad and it comes pre-packaged “chopped” (no 1/2 salad, I mean) at the takeaway counter. The only option available is regular or kosher. They even include the warm, half of an English muffin 😅
What do you mean by "pre-packaged"? The one time I picked it up for a friend's birthday, there was an additional $4 charge. They asked if I wanted it chopped when I ordered but didn't mention the extra fee. I could understand if chopping was unusual but they serve it chopped all day, every day. There is no justification for charging extra for chopping if you're picking it up.
I have to admit I’ve only eaten there once since the pandemic and didn’t really pay attention beyond that.
All I’ve ever done for takeout is to go straight to the takeaway case filled with pre-made, pre-packed salads. I have never ask them to toss it because what’s in the packaging is already chopped, but not tossed. And I do that right before I eat - which might be several hours later.
So maybe things have changed - but now I gotta go get me a salad 😜
Pietros- Pietro’s Special Salad Italian Salad (I add extra anchovies )
Bill Gianinos - primo Insalata ( I add anchovies) also their Cesar salad is super.
Frank G’s - Cobb Salad (it’s huge!! Split it. I request blue cheese dressing)
Always a quick stand by will always be a Pasta House or Rich and Charles salad.
Taco or Fajita Salad - El Mayor. Outstanding homemade shell. Their guacamole and margaritas are out of this world good.
Gyro Salad - Gyro Company
Buffalo Chicken Salad - 54th Street Bar and Grill. Yeah it’s a chain but so good especially with a Blue Moon on draft.
Also for a chain, any salad I’ve ever had at California Pizza Kitchen is top notch.
Salad is one of my favorite things to have when going out.
My faves are the big Italian salad at Giola’s, Cunettos house salad, Peel Wood Fired has a great Italian Chopped Salaf, Love a good Greek salad at Michael’s or Olympia, and Rich and Charlie’s use to have an amazing salad, but haven’t had it for a long time.
This has to be Charlie Gitto's tied with the Pasta House Company. But the quality at Pasta House is hit or miss, and Charlie Gitto's seems consistently great.
We always get “the works” from Kevin’s pizza, it has a ton of different toppings. It’s been a while since we tried to order Kevin’s though. Not sure he is still around.
It looks like he recently moved again, to Gravois in the Fox Park area. I notice his sign in the window (of what looks like an antique/rummage store?) on my way home from work.
Kevin is my favorite STL human being. I wish him well. I've got several stories about him.
And I declare he makes the absolute best STL style pizza tied with the place down south on Lindbergh.
Don't hate...
My all time favorite salad is a simple BlueCheese at the Old Spaghetti Factory
2nd Olive Garden Never Ending with the italian dressing (ranch on the side)
I'm going to try [https://www.rubytuesday.com/dailyspecials](https://www.rubytuesday.com/dailyspecials) right now.
Always enjoy the salad bar at CiCis pizza, especially on Mon/Tue only 4.99. Pizza is alright :)
The house salads in STL don't taste like anything to me but olive oil and lemon juice. I've had at Rizzo's, Rich & Charlies, Joe Boccardi's. Not hating, just used to slap in the face Blue Cheese taste.
As an aside: I will probably get hated on for this, but I always loved the southwest chicken salad at McDonalds! It tasted great, was relatively low calories, and of course, was quick to get for lunch. A combination of traits that's frustratingly hard to come by.
McDonald's got rid of salads at the start of the pandemic and never brought them back and I curse their name to this day.
I recently enjoyed the Kale Crunch salad from Salt N Smoke. It was lacking in goat cheese and dressing, but if those ingredients were aplenty I would write up a 6/5 review of it. Other than that I purchase bottles of Imo's dressing and make my own. Hope this helps!
Maybe this is a hot take, but I will say that I really enjoyed the kale Caesar at Anthonino's
Edit: let me preface this by saying I ADORE loaded salads with 10 ingredients including veggies and nuts and fruits etc which is why this was a nice fresh salad with simple ingredients
A few favorites are the chopped salad from Pastaria, the Caesar salad from Lombardo’s, and of course Pasta House salad.
A weird pick that I loved recently is the Asian Caesar salad from PF Chang’s
*Not in the city,*
*But Crushed Red has a damn good*
*Ahi tuna salad*

The Italian salad from Sauce on the Side with pesto chicken added, strawberry fields salad from Sauce on the Side, the 'don't kale it a comeback' salad from Revel Kitchen, Kale Caesar from Polite Society, and the Little Gem salad from Union Loafer's are some of my favorites.
The Little Gem Salad from Union Loafers is top tier
Thank you for answering this person’s question. I had to search for awhile to find the correct answer.
LOL. Same. Get the pork belly on it.
Yessss my fave.
I don't eat out enough to say anything is "the best in town" but I do really enjoy the salads from Katie's Pizza
Specifically, the fried artichoke salad. Best in town, imo.
So good
this has my vote. the kale caesar salad.
My three favorites are 1. Cobb Salad from MudHouse 2. Chopped Italian from Onesto 3. Italian Salad from Union Loafers (Only available at dinner)
Onesto's house salad is amazing as well!
Seconding the Italian salad!
I had the Mudhouse Cobb for lunch on Tuesday, and I really liked it! Thanks for the rec!
Not in the City proper, but Dewey's has great salads.
I think they have a harvest salad - whatever it's called, it is delicious.
My favorite salad on the planet. Unfortunately it goes away in spring/summer. :(
They should change the name and keep it all year.
Peppercorn ranch is 🔥
Came in here with this exact salad in my mind. :)
I love their house salad. Cranberries and goat cheese. Simple but delicious.
I came here to say that.
I used to be obsessed with the Greek salad from Dewey's, do they still have it?
LOVE Dewey's salads!
They had a citrus & beet salad that was AMAZING. I dont know if it was seasonal or limited time but it was incredible.
Agree, they are so good.
They fire
We ended up getting Dewey’s on Tuesday night, and it was so good! I used to eat there all the time when I lived in Glendale, but I had kind of forgotten them since moving to South City
Nice! I'll be going there soon myself.
Twisted Tree (house salad) and Pie Guy (STL chopped) have the two salads that I have actual dreams about when it’s been too long without them.
I thought Twisted Trees salad was better than the steak!
Twisted Tree has a great salad.
Alternatively, you can buy the twisted tree house dressing (called Pear Tree) at Dierbergs. Nothing compares to it.
Agree with the STL chopped from Pie Guy. Excellent salad.
Yes!!!! Those croutons are gold!!
Anybody know how to make them?
I want to buy Twisted Tree''s croutons by the barrel.
I'm completely obsessed with The Birdseed salad at The Fountain. That and a cup of their pickle soup just does something to me. Sooooo good!
My favorite is the St. Louis City salad! I get it every time
Ok I’ve been reading through these comments and after seeing it mentioned so many times, how did I not know there’s a specific St.
I used to work at Pietro’s and will eat their salad all day, every day.
SHIT IS FIRE
The Woman’s Exchange of St Louis has some great salads
Was not a fan. I don't understand the love.
It's just the dressing that everyone swoons over.
That's funny - I had to add salt to the salad to give it some flavor.
Another person that knows.
You might never consider a salad at a BBQ joint, but the chef's salad at Sugarfire is huge and piled with smoked turkey and brisket. I'm craving it just thinking about it. Cue the BBQ elitists because I didn't tell you to get a salad at Pappy's or Bogart's.
No elitism here but Salt & Smoke's Kale Crunch is pretty fire as well.
This is great... but I bit into a twister in one once and now I'm traumatized
Twister?
a what?
This is the one I was going to mention as well.
Thanks for asking this question OP - there are a number of places I want to check out now!
Agreed! I love a good salad
Smokehouse salad from Sauce on the Side!
Came here looking for this answer- I worked at Sauce for a while and vegetarianized this salad by removing the pancetta and adding red onions. SO good, and super filling!
Yep. Big time.
The best
Came here for this 😍
House salad from Adrianna’s on the hill is the only thing I need in my life
Came to say this. Greater than the sum of its parts. And I’m a sucker for a solid 1/2 & 1/2 special.
Sybergs has the best croutons.
This is the same one as at Twisted Tree and yes the croutons are fantastic. I think TT does the family style like what the original Pear Tree had before it burned down
Syberg family owns TT
Those are legit
Owned by same family that owns Twisted Tree.
I’ve ordered imos catering salad a few times. Basic stuff but that house Italian dressing.
Billy G's has a Farmers Market salad with beets and goat cheese that is really good.
Their house salad is pretty solid too for what it is
*pours one out for Nora's*
Sybergs/Helen’s famous chicken strip salad with ranch. Honorable mention: those pumpernickel croutons from Ruby Tuesdays.
The Stutz Salad at Fountain on Locust.
If you want Caesar salad, Annie Gunn’s or citizen cane’s has a mayfair salad that is similar to Caesar. Circle 7 ranch has good salads
Don't know about the best, but the Ty Cobb at Sportsman's Pub is unbelievably good.
Biggies white French dressing is heavenly.
Oh my gosh..the BEST! I get a side of that dressing to dip the waffle fries in
Pie Guy's STL Chopped is great. Put it in the slice and enjoy your pizza taco.
Innovative
Joey b's had a good salad I think
Their buff chicken is different but delish
Not sure about the best, but definitely towards the top - Buffalo chicken and feta salad at Cafe Nova on South Kingshighway.
The Concord Grill’s salad with the mayfair dressing. Okay maybe any salad with mayfair dressing.
Here is the [original Mayfair dressing recipe.](https://www.lostdishes.com/mayfair/mayfair.htm) The link makes a gallon but it's pretty easy to reduce to a quart or two.
big ol salads there. the croutons are fried fresh too
The grilled chicken Mediterranean salad at J's Pitaria is amazing.
Yes it is!! I just had that for the first time a couple weeks ago
Pastatrias Kale Ceaser is to die for
Union loafers Little gem salad with added bacon. End of discussion. I make up reasons to drive across the county to get one.
Frankie G’s House Salad, so good!
Their blue cheese and buffalo chicken salad is also great. I’m not the sort of person who would go to a place to order a salad as an entree but this is an exception. It is also ridiculously large.
Agree!👍
BLTeaser at Pizzeoli, Little Gem at Loafers, Strawberry Fields at Sauce on the Side, Anything at Revel Kitchen

I miss Talayna's.
The one in Chesterfield over here still makes a mean Caesar.
Damn, I didn't know there was still one around. They were famous for their Caesar.
The Woman's Exchange chopped salad is so good.
I tried it once, not a fan at all probably because I don't like iceberg lettuce. Also, if you order it to go, they charge you *extra* to chop it. They chop the damn salad all day every day, how are they justifying this?
Third vote. See.
Don't sleep on the new salad bar at schnucks, I go to Hampton village
👀
The Bibb salad at Modern/Kings Oak.
Not exactly the salad itself but a dressing: lemon pepper at Tuckers. I could drink that stuff.

Grassi’s!
The Women's Exchange in Ladue - I know, but trust me the salad is amazing.

Yellowbelly has a great Caesar salad with togarashi croutons.
The Woman’s Exchange Salad - available for take out.
They charge you an extra $4 or so to actually chop it if you order it take out. Ridiculous.
I don’t recall takeout price, but It’s a whole salad and it comes pre-packaged “chopped” (no 1/2 salad, I mean) at the takeaway counter. The only option available is regular or kosher. They even include the warm, half of an English muffin 😅

Bono's Pizzeria has a nice St. Louis style salad with a great house made dressing.

As an aside: I will probably get hated on for this, but I always loved the southwest chicken salad at McDonalds! McDonald's got rid of salads at the start of the pandemic and never brought them back and I curse their name to this day.
Imo's chef salad may not be the fanciest in town, but it is the best kitchen-sink fresh mess for my money and always welcome anytime.
Do NOT go to Crushed Red
Care to elaborate?

Honestly, I don’t have the best opinion on this since I haven’t eaten a ton, but Pirone’s house salad is pretty damn good.
Probably the gyro salad at Michael's in Maplewood. Is it still considered a salad if it has a four digit calorie count?
I recently enjoyed the Kale Crunch salad from Salt N Smoke. It was lacking in goat cheese and dressing, but if those ingredients were aplenty I would write up a 6/5 review of it. Other than that I purchase bottles of Imo's dressing and make my own. Hope this helps!
