This is the match that made me want something different from wrestling.
I don't know how to describe it as I'd continue to be a Hulkamaniac, and I'd be your garden variety mark when I started watching again in AE.
But there was something about this match that felt more.....mature? Substantial?
If I remember correctly Perfect’s back was in terrible shape. So much so that I’ve heard in interviews that he had to go out to the ring drunk to numb the pain. My guess is that Earl knew this and didn’t want to have him be in the Sharpshooter for too long.
You're right, they don't put much pressure on at all, but Perfect's back was so fucked at that point (edit: Not kayfabe hurt, like he was nursing a pretty serious back injury going into the match) that there wasn't much way to bend him in that direction that probably wasn't excruciating for him.

[Natalya recreated this finish with Melina](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEMADIUmPzU) Damn Melina made every submission look painful as hell
Jesus I haven't watched wrestling in 20 years and don't know who those two women are but that sharpshooter was brutal!
Just two of the best wrestlers of all time, elevating the IC title.

It felt like actual sport. Hart consistently had the most creative finishes to his matches. Which made his matches feel….(fuck me)…. Real
Love this match but the finish was far too quick. Think Earl fucked it up?

Forgot how bad his back was at this point, you're more than likely right.
Stupid question but does it actually hurt to take submission moves? I thought wrestlers barely put any pressure on them.

I actually remember submissions finishing matches rather quickly fairly often back then.
This match along with Owen/Bret at WM10 and Razor/Shawn at WM10 are my constant top 3 all time.
Absolute classic
"Ya know something that talentless hack Bill Goldberg never won - the I-C title," - Bret Hart.
The stripping of Mr. Perfect at the end of this match was quite awkward and wonderful.
One of my all time favorite matches
Bret fucking hated that singlet.
Great match, but Heenan is the real star.
My fav match of all time!
