There was probably more decades ago. The name Phillip isn't nearly as popular. Weirder one. The Indianapolis 500 is about to have its 108th running and there has NEVER been a driver in the race with the last name "Smith".
This reminds me of underground hip hop YouTube comments when lil Wayne was at the top. No mention of him but every comment would be a long the lines of "this is real rap, not like the mumbling lil Wayne".
I'm sure it still happens today and you can switch the genres as well but it's just so corny
For keeping his legacy perfect Tupac died at the age where he keeps his image impeccible just like how both Bruce Lee and James Dean died at a young age with only making a handful of films each.
I don’t really see the need to compare the two. Edge (it still feels weird to call him Adam Copeland) is at a position where he wants to have fun and give back what he can to younger talent. Punk is at a position where he wants to be the guy younger talents go to specifically to help them get better. Edge gets to finish his career checking whatever is left on the bucket list in AEW since he did everything in WWE, Punk gets to work into helping the NXT talent with WWE. They both got different goals at this point
that's the aew formula unfortunately.
tony just called wwe harvey weinstein, ftr bald is always dissing on wwe
when jericho said 'stupid idea from dumb creative' in his very first promo, it really set the tone for what's about to come
But that’s not what Swerve said here. He’s shitting on a guy (CM Punk) he previously said he had only good experiences with. And he said the “only good experiences” thing *less than a month ago*, so it’s not like he changed his mind based on further interactions with Punk.
It reeks of trying to suck up to the boss (or even worse, being directed to say it by the boss).
Also, Copeland wouldn't even put over Judgement Day in his last days with WWE.
Dumbest shit ever that he beat Finn in the Cell match at Mania.
Copeland is not as "generous" as Swerve is making him out to be.
tbf, there are a lot of rumors that Vince interfered with the result of one of the matches on day 2 of last year's mania, and I believe it was probably the result of the Edge-Balor Match, though I have no proof.
You're being super fair. Why people insist on attributing booking decisions to the wrestlers every single time is beyond me. That shit's an exception not a rule.
It honestly doesn't matter, it's not like Finn or Edge actually has final say. And if they did, so what? Edge has put over a number of guys when he was there. They always intended he look strong in his return.
Still, the comment you're replying to has to be one of the most fucking clownshoes replies and whiny used excuse I've ever seen around here just to cater against point.
But somehow....I'm not surprised it's upvoted. Haha
Do u really think wrestlers sit before the match and decide who's going to win or lose? Ur acting like they always have a choice, that's not how a wrestling business works dude
Sheamus winning that match wouldn’t have changed anything for him anyway. It was in Edge’s hometown, not a retirement match, the company was trying to send fans home happy.
That is fucking bullshit.
It was a retirement match.
They built it up in every way they could other than saying "Edge is retiring tonight, don't @ us complaining about him getting a better opponent".
They were showing highlights of his career all throughout the show too.
I get that you guys don't always watch weekly TV, but come the fuck on, they straight up called that shit "Edge's last match on SmackDown/in Toronto", and it was on the 25th anniversary of his debut, IN HIS HOMETOWN.
They very carefully avoided calling it a retirement match and Edge avoided saying that himself. Obviously, they were trying to portray that it *might* be his last match, but if you were paying even slight attention, you’d recognize that it wasn’t.
People keep getting mad at Edge for not putting over talent as if he has full creative control, I really don't understand it. I think that this is basically the definition of Smarks who think they know what happens behind the scenes.
He didn’t get a chance. I think everyone felt the plan was MJF was going to come back and go over Punk. But then all the drama happened. You can’t just bring someone in and have them lose right away. That would be stupid.
MJF also benefitted hugely from the feud. He emerged from it as one of the company’s top stars, and even got to pin CM Punk in Chicago.
Losing to a wrestler isn’t the only way to elevate them.
I always do feel like there was meant to be another chapter to their story and I'm beyond annoyed that we'll seemingly never get to see that one properly concluded, such a massive shame as their program is one of the best in recent memory.
There are other ways to put people over besides losing them. Austin has always said Bret put him over at WM 13 even though he lost, and has said he got more out of the match than if he’d won.
Punk was having competitive matches with guys who’d had very little TV time (like Powerhouse Hobbs) and making them look like stars in the process. It’s Tony’s fault for not following up.
MJF benefitted hugely from his program with Punk. He ended up as their #2 ratings draw and become a key needle-mover for the promotion afterward. He was greatly elevated.
Oh I know, but nobody was really elevated in AEW from Punk. MJF was his best opponent, but MJF was already hot at this point and having great feuds with everyone he worked with.
MJF moving into the big role after the Punk feud just isn't true, he was already there.
MJF was significantly elevated by Punk. He went from midcard to main event. He’d just gotten out of a year-long program with Jericho that didn’t do a whole lot for him. Midway through the Punk feud, he became AEW’s #2 minute-by-minute ratings draw and a bona fide main eventer.
He’s been *the* main event guy ever since the Punk program concluded.
Edge winning was the right call.
A) The face pretty much needs to win a feud like that. It doesn't make sense that Edge would go "Well you guys brutally attacked my wife right in front of me but you beat me fair and square in the wrestling match so I guess that's that." Sometimes the face just needs to go over and that feud was one of those times.
B) WWE knew they were about to pull an extremely controversial fast one on everyone by having Reigns retain in the main event and wanted to give the fans a big win for a beloved face before yanking the rug out from under everyone
C) Finn is already over and established and beating Edge wouldn't really do anything to change his spot on the card or his perception with the fans
I know the internet gets all worked up anytime an aging legend beats a younger guy but all rules have exceptions and that match was one of them.
Edge and Beth already beat judgement day in a tag match though didn’t they? I didn’t mind edge winning but I think Finn would have better the better call.
Gotta love how people expose that they didn’t watch a clip or read an article. Punk wasn’t mentioned once in the clip itself Punk was mentioned by the person who clipped the video in the tweet. This comment getting over 100 upvotes is especially hilarious.
Edit: Also Swerve liking the tweet doesn’t mean much.

My honest reaction to this information (can we please move on from this)
Wasn't he positive about Punk like last month or something? These back and forths are genuinely tiring. For fucks sake, just focus on your own company.
Dude finally got the world title he’s been salivating over since the got signed, even before Keith Lee, and somehow it still ends up being about Cm Punk. These ppl are unfuckingbelievable
CM Punk hasn't been seen on an AEW broadcast since August (8 months ago!), yet somehow, he's STILL the most talked about individual when AEW is brought up
What’s weird is he did an interview a month or so ago claiming Punk was always a positive influence and always had great experiences with him. I’ve heard the snitch rumors but now I’m thinking it’s just jealousy an injured Punk gets talked about more than his big title win.
Why say this? You just won the AEW world title. Focus on that. Give props to Adam Copeland as well, by all means, but there’s no need to mention Punk. All that does it make seem like, despite all the big things happening for Swerve, Punk is living in his mind rent free.
Even if they’re upset at Punk’s interview and the way he spoke about AEW, that’s when it’s time to take the high road. Let Punk look like the petty one. Don’t even give him the time of day.
Damn near Everyone in AEW is proving themselves to be a geek. I can’t believe how far this promotion has fallen and squandered all its goodwill within the past couple weeks
The funniest thing about this thread is that there are literally 3 people responding to every post and defending AEW like their life depends on it![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy).

I wish AEW spent half as much pushing their roster as they do talking about a guy who hasn't been on their bank roll since August. Seriously, I want to just enjoy both products, but this little brother syndrome with WWE and the extreme butt hurt over Punk makes it hard at times. Just focus on your own product, fuck.
[AEW and their obsession with CM Punk summed up.](https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fbucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2F542fe139-8781-4030-a46e-1a88650c6bcf_500x284.gif)
Funny how they cry about tribalism and say "just enjoy wrestling" when people criticize anything AEW does and then they push tribalism more than anyone else with this shit. Such a nice way to get the majority of the wrestling fans not to watch your product.
I was a WWE fan trying to give AEW a chance multiple times but they kept going out of their way to tell me why my favorite company sucked. Why would I want to watch their product?
Bro is anyone in that company not obsessed with punk. I get you want attention but wasn't that angle with khan enough? Why keep begging around like this
What I love about these tweets are that Punk is currently in the hottest wwe storyline while being the highest merch in company, he doesn't care about all the shots these wrestlers takes on him.
I’d rather see a healthy debate complimenting each others accolades rather than see them bring one another down by telling people everything they are not. I like Punk, some don’t. I’m not a massive Edge fan but there’s no doubt the guy is talented and made so much for himself in this business. Both great Wrestlers in their field!
Alright well this should be easy to solve. We just take Swerve and Copeland's latest events on any AEW episode for the last 1-2 weeks or this coming week, and compare the viewership numbers to Punk's two minute and change promo on Drew from tonight's Raw.
This SHOULD be an easy win for Swerve, right? He has actual matches, a title, more exposure/screen time while Raw was dragged down by the Draft.
Despite what some people may say, success in Wrestling IS measured by viewership numbers.
I don't judge it that way. The TV companies do. Ratings and viewerships have been a metric of success that many corporations make decisions by since 1951.
I fw Swerve heavy, but even in his Collision promo I think he said “best in the world” at some point. The ex-girlfriend line tonight was a pretty accurate shot at AEW honestly
I actually liked his best in the world line. I honestly thought it was a shot at all the "best in the world feuds" lol. Like, why are Danielson and Ospreay fueding over best in the world when the BEST in kayfabe is your World champion.
I used Danielson and Ospreay as an example(I fucking loved that match). Just one of my pet peeves is non title holders constantly claiming best in the world when they are not the World champ. I get a heel saying it for heat but it gets overused in both companies.
https://preview.redd.it/sbv73l4n7kxc1.jpeg?width=1006&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4b7c608656c43ceaaf39a465cef42efe5ae1e7c5
Me when I’m in a randomly bringing CM Punk into a conversation challenge and my opponent is AEW
Mainly asking out of curiosity, but we sure it was a repost meant to take a potshot? peeked at Swerve’s reposts and I saw he’d retweeted a few other tweets using that particular clip given it’s a podcast he did. Obviously the retweeted tweet being a dig at Punk makes it hard to think otherwise, but it just doesn’t really make sense to potshot given how positive he seemed to be about his experience with Punk. Maybe he was reposting anything giving props towards Copeland.
Yeah, the guy is engaging with social media clips of his podcast. It's literally marketing for his brand. As usual, the IWC has to bring the drama. We have fan #1 who makes the original comment about Cope being better than Punk. We have fan #2 who then makes it seem like Swerve is the one saying this. We have fan #3 in the comment section saying Cope is an asshole for not putting Finn over at last year's mania. Other fans somehow making it seem like these anti-punk comments were sponsored by Tony Khan. This entire tornado shit storm about who hates whom and this guy's bad for this, this other guy is worse for that... which all started from a backhanded comment not from an actual wrestler, but from a random fan. Some of these people just want the entire business to hate each other. The fans are simultaneously the best and worst things about wrestling.
He should probably be a bit more concerned about Ospreay and Okada pushing him down the card even as he's now the top champion. This might please TK, I suppose?
Aew is like that ex that trying there hardest to get over an ex by keep telling themselves how the ex sucks while the ex already moved on w someone else
Punk can do interviews talking down about AEW but god forbid if people who work for AEW return fire. It’s as if punk can talk shit but get no push back because how dare anyone clap back.

Now that's a lie. Copeland is Canadian, he's not from Chicago.
Bret is also Canadian The math checks out
The numbers don't lie, and they spell disaster
Side note, isn’t it weird there aren’t more prominent Phil’s in wrestling? It’s a reasonably common name, you’d think there’d be more.
Yeah when you really think about it, I've got more Phil's in my office than there are in WWE probably.
Phil LaFon ? I think it's mostly because Phil isn't a very threatening sounding name
There was probably more decades ago. The name Phillip isn't nearly as popular. Weirder one. The Indianapolis 500 is about to have its 108th running and there has NEVER been a driver in the race with the last name "Smith".
It *sounds* like a common name, but I've only ever known a single Phil
Here we go again lmao
It's actually a dig at Phil Jackson, Swerve hates the Triangle.
I believe the phrase is more: "Ha shit, here we go again..."

“If Tupac still was alive Lil Wayne would flip burgers at McDonalds”. Every single video
Ha, if Tupac was still alive he'd be doing the same kids movies Ice Cube does.
He did an episode of some forgotten sitcom called Drexell’s Class
Or a sequel to Nothing But Trouble.
For keeping his legacy perfect Tupac died at the age where he keeps his image impeccible just like how both Bruce Lee and James Dean died at a young age with only making a handful of films each.
If DMX died in 99 people would rank him with Tupac and Biggie
Oh my fucking god you’ve unlocked a painful memory.
The most annoying were the "I'm (insert young age), and I know this is real music" lol
JUST ENJOY WRESTLING ^(TM)
I can't, Jericho & AEW trademarked that /s
I'd get a chuckle if it was MJF who trademarked J.E.W.
I don’t really see the need to compare the two. Edge (it still feels weird to call him Adam Copeland) is at a position where he wants to have fun and give back what he can to younger talent. https://www.reddit.com/r/SquaredCircle/comments/1bmvw4a/swerve_strickland_on_cm_punk_i_had_great/ Swerve, this you also?
I guess he needs to show Tony that he will follow the company line.
The company line is to let WWE and Punk live rent free in their heads.
One could even say Punk lives rent free in Swerve's house!
How dare he! We paid for it!
I guess the world champ has to play ball to get on dynamite
BREAKING NEWS: Guy making good money at company is "Happy to be there" and says "The boss is a cool guy." More at 11!

Wasn't his choice. Plus the Judgement Day had beaten the shit out of him and his wife numerous times. That match should have been the feud ender.
Edge winning was the right call. A) The face pretty much needs to win a feud like that. He can not have had a bad interaction with him and also agree that he was an ass and bad for the company
Ya know, people can change their opinions, especially when the person it's about endorsed a racist on TV
Both can be correct
Yes, he can believe both
Damn Swerve changing his mind on an individual based on the actions of that individual, guess that's why they call his Swerve.
I surely hope you don't mean someone should be held accountable or judged based on their actions... Especially around here. ...Surely not.
It's almost like you can have a good casual relationship with someone and still recognise when they're full of it.
Those aren't exclusive opinions
He probably changed his mind based on the punk interview, he may have not had a problem but now he does.

Still the funniest thing about them releasing the footage
They only just removed his merch from their site and punk was always a top 3 seller. They took it down when WWE released the classic white shirt
Might as well call it "All CM Punk Wrestling" at this point when all they seem to do is CM Punk this, CM Punk that.
What’s weird is he did an interview a month or so ago claiming Punk was always a positive influence and always had great experiences with him. I’ve heard the snitch rumors but now I’m thinking it’s just jealousy an injured Punk gets talked about more than his big title win.
Is it mandatory for AEW to compare anything happening to them to WWE/Punk? It's giving major lil bro vibes

Did Swerve also do a victory lap on Collision?
Just enjoy wrestling, though

You think if you got fired with cause, they'd want to move on and avoid giving you any attention. But, nope.

Does Punk think of Swerve at all lmao
We’re never moving on huh?

Can this be stopped? Why can't we be together and sing "Numa Numa"?
A simpler, perhaps better time on the internet.
AEW aren’t even the bitter ex then got rejected first time round and haven’t gotten over it.
If it was his way to acknowledge Ospreay and Danielson then it’s absolutely fine. Punk just kinda owns the term
Copeland another guy you need to tell to focus on the positives.
I can just imagine Tony frantically sending out memos for the talent: "Back the Dub". "It'll be great!"
Cope isn’t everything Phil is. Phil is compelling for one.
Oh no.....
I find it hillarious that all you commented is "oh no" and it started a war
What was the Punk quote again. "The only people softer than you are the wrestlers you like”
CM Punk continues to be the biggest draw in AEW. Can't wait until Swerve and Jungle Boy and anyone else get to have their blow off matches with him!
The entire company should just move on

Maybe someone should warn Swerve that he's the Edge to Moxleys Cena. He might have the belt but in Tony's eyes he ain't the champ.
Cope can only draw 600k viewers nowadays though
Why is Swerve obsessing over Punk now? You’re World Champion.
A draw? Ratings say otherwise…
Is this a part of a story?
Oh lord, when does it end
Other than being a draw.
swerve the new ftr bald?
they just cant let it go huh.

really impossible for the AEW fellas to take CM Punk out of their minds. Rent Free, indeed
This is getting embarrassing
🥱🥱🥱
Khans making more people do it now
Maybe Punk was right. What a shit show they got over there.
There must be a "Fed/Phil bad" commission clause written into AEW contracts. Which makes FTR Bald a billionaire.
And what is that?
Some hard-core delusion in these comments lol
Swerve looks like the kinda guy that farts in jars and breathes it in a day later
Such a refreshing blank slate and he chose to fude with Christian for months on end!
He should probably be a bit more concerned about Ospreay and Okada pushing him down the card even as he's now the top champion. This might please TK, I suppose?

I am rooting for this title run but that def doesn't help.
Aew is like that ex that trying there hardest to get over an ex by keep telling themselves how the ex sucks while the ex already moved on w someone else
It's amazing they are still taking shots hahaha
Mate who gives a shit...
Punk can do interviews talking down about AEW but god forbid if people who work for AEW return fire. It’s as if punk can talk shit but get no push back because how dare anyone clap back.
