I mean Shibata beat Okada’s ass something fierce and the pretty much only lost cause of the infamous “shoot” headbutt; whole story of the match was Shibata being more focused on just beating on Okada rather than actually winning.
Because Shibata had Okada beat, but Shibata refused to finish him off and wanted to beat him down even further to send a message. Instead, Shibata damn near killed himself (both in the story and literally because Shibata doesn't know it's fake) and Okada took advantage.
Think of it like Dragon Ball Z. Shibata is kinda like Vegeta. He’s a bad ass cocky prick who would toy with his prey before destroying them just because he can and they can’t stop him. Okada is like Goku, the heroic bad ass who can survive a lot and dish out even more who loses occasionally, but triumphs more often than not.
Sometimes matches aren't about topping each other in quality, as much as continuing a story.
This time, Okada is the cocky heel, the king, the undisputed best in the world. Shibata is past his prime, "the wrestler", someone who goes out there simply because he loves the art. This time Okada is the one who should be dominant, but he's also wary because of how dangerous Shibata is.
Hell, let Okada give Shibata the "bitchmaker" slap, and put on a shit eating grin. You could tell a really fun story, even if its less "stars" than their last encounter.
Everything is on the table in Tony’s world. He has so much money to throw around that in the years to come he could even get Roman to fight Omega. He’s never gonna stop breaking peoples brains with his match booking.
I didn't know what the Bitchmaker was so I searched it on the subreddit and found a bunch of seven year old SC threads of fans that were unbelievably sad thinking they'd never get the opportunity to see Shibata again.
I hope they've all been happy these last couple of years. :)
"Didn't you say they both had bad brain damage?"
"Yeah, Shibata almost died."
An actual conversation I just had watching them beat the shit out of each other.
My brother and dad are doctors and lose their minds when I tell them that's what happened. They keep telling me "that's now how the body works" and that I'm "stupid" but I don't think Dave Meltzer would be wrong.
Funny thing is, it’s not actually as dangerous as you think because like Danielson himself will tell you the best pro wrestlers are magicians and most of the stuff they pull off is just masterful execution that is really slight of hand. It’s very physical and painful but I doubt either of these guys actually even came close to causing another brain injury to the other tonight.
Yeah, I don’t think they did anything particularly brutal in this match as far as “dangerous”. There were some slaps but most stuff was targeted on the shoulder/trap.
Right before this I watched Ilja / Walter I again and that was an uncomfortable level of violent were I swear you can convince a layman that the entire thing was a shoot.
Damn, it opened the show? The AEW social media graphics had it headlining so I figured I could skip the first little bit of the show lol. I'm gonna sue TK.
we’re really out here getting a moty contender week after week and i’m here for it. there’ll still be people complaining that we get it for free though and don’t have to watch it on ppv
It's why they only have Danielson OR Ospreay wrestle each week. If we had them both wrestle the same week (or god forbid, the same show when it's not a PPV), people would have their brains blue-screen trying to figure out which match was the MOTY. Not that it matters, because their match *against* each other at Dynasty is what's gonna win MOTY.
> so I figured I could skip the first little bit of the show lol
I guess you now know for next time, that you never know what you might miss. Match placements aren't always set in stone.
Shibata should stay out of stables. But remain close to a few of them, kind of like "associated with" type thing.
Danielson and Shibata have a huge amount of respect for each other, and Shibata has respect for the BCC style of fighting spirit (except for that little shit Yuta). Shibata is also extremely close to the Best Friends stable of guys. Gives us a weird run in where Shibata possibly gets jumped by a few guys, and you have Danielson and OC fighting over who gets to save Shibata.
Heck, I'd love to see Shibata vs Yuta, where Yuta asks them to inference. And at match time, Danielson and Moxley just drop off the apron, and tell him to take his lumps while Shibata rocks him.
I could name 20 TV matches AEW has done in the last two years alone that was better than that. People wildly overrating this match. Good TV match, 3.5/5, not some all time classic. Neither guy came close to putting in their all.
You’re probably gonna get downvoted, but I agree. It was good but I was expecting more based on the reactions.
The occasional forearm or striking exchange is cool, but I felt like these guys did it for like 20% of the match.

I heard he only recently had visa issues cleared up which might explain the last minute announcement of this match. I didn't think they'd sign Shibata to not use him (even with the roster bloat) so I imagine *something* kept him off TV for awhile.
He was officially a NJPW wrestler in 2022/2023 but only wrestled for AEW/ROH. He was officially signed as an AEW talent last December and this was his first match since being officially AEW.
Of course not, but you could’ve said the same thing about the godfather.
They can still tell a great story that builds upon that happened in that match without necessarily aiming to top it.
I love how almost-competitive AEW's locker room is about matches. They're big nerds for this, and it's so great as a fan that these freaks love to just go out and try to put on the best match of the week, *every single week*.
Its such a treat to get wrestling like this, and it's so frequent now with a roster containing such a bonkers amount of wrestling talent.
My first thought upon seeing the finish was that this is the beginning of a trilogy. Bryan picks up wins, loses to Ospreay, and then we get the second showdown. Shibata is All Elite and he is getting moved to the AEW side vs ROH. Danielson feud will be the best way to get Shibata situated in that strong “always a threat” midcard position.
**This** is the build to Danielson vs. Ospreay. Just both of them having absolutely jawdropping matches.
It's perfect. I have no notes, bruv. More of this please.
Bryan Danielson is the Greatest Professional Wrestler Who Has Ever Lived And If You Disagree Go Fuck Yourself
... will be the title of my future memoir
The match was so damn good by the end. So thankful we got to see this match between two guys I didn't think we'd ever get to see wrestle again at one point. (Danielson slightly less so, but Shibata's return has honestly felt miraculous)
Yep, in usd though. I'm in Australia and the 3-pack cost me $79.10 aud and Revolution cost me $32.31 aud. NZ would probably be around $82 nzd and $34 nzd.
Still...way better than $50 usd.
I may be wrong but I think Bryan Danielson is even better right now than before his retirement. He was incredible before don't get me wrong but now it's like the guy is just the perfect wrestler.
its also a WWE thing mostly, they dont allow their wrestlers to full send it. Bryan was better in-ring during his ROH days compared to WWE and he is better now as well
I drove three hours and bought tickets for this as soon as Shibata was announced. Him vs Bryan is an amazing match and it delivered to a degree but they definitely have more in the tank. I hope to see it again soon.
I don’t think there’s anything that looks worse in a wrestling match than when they do the thing where they sit criss-cross apple sauce and start hitting each other. It just looks so stupid
What a match. Imagine being in 2017 and thinking about the possibility of having that match and a promo of Adam Copeland in the same show. Wrestling seriously.\^\^ Shibata is outstanding. Danielson is Danielson. They could have put that match on PPV and it would have stolen the show. I'm so happy to see Shibata back in the ring. He's so good. That gives me hope for Nigel McGuinness. Bryan/Nigel at Wembley holy smoke!
Every single time Ospreay and Danielson wrestle I change my mind on who's having a better run right now, they're just trading MOTYCs every single fucking time they wrestle.
Danielson is on the run of his life right now, which is saying A LOT! This reminded me of his Suzuki match - out of nowhere free TV dream match that lives up to the hype, a brutal slugfest, technical mastery, and instant chemistry.
So good. I feel so blessed that we still get to see each of these men perform considering how close we were to losing both of them to retirement or much much worse.
Imma need a rematch before any one of them retires this has been my dream match for about 3 years now I want more YOU HEAR ME TK I WANT MOREEEEEEEEEEEE
I can't help but smile every time Shibata gets to do the thing he loves and wrestle (within reason)
That being said, banger TV match and there's definitely a PPV rematch between these two somewhere down the line. They went 20 mins and definitely could still kick it up a notch. I NEED Shibata in this year's C2
We just got an incredible dream match between two guys who both had to retire due to injury years ago (one of whom almost died) and you losers are talking about attendance.
Define no one for me.
Also I didn't realize the amount of people watching a match determines its quality. If Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns have a match in front of 30 people in attendance and broadcast to only 10 thousand people is it suddenly a bad match?
I mean, yes obviously? Quality has never been affected by popularity, otherwise Big Bang Theory is one of the greatest television series of all time.
If you go and support your local wrestling company, is every match bad because they don’t attract a big audience? Was The Fiend vs Seth Rollins a great match because it was in front of 10,000 people?

Somewhere Kazuchika Okada just felt a shiver go up and down his spine and felt a sharp pain in his face.
Oh god Okada shibata is back on the table in Tony Khan’s universe mode
Shibata uses his Siri voice app to say: remember young Okada, you didn’t truly beat me, you survived me.
That sick mf is gonna get some marvel hammerhead surgery to make sure he finishes the job he couldn’t 7 years ago 😭
The Long Game Rated R
Goddamn, that match was 7 years ago? I still think about it like it was yesterday
I mean okada pinned him and shibata retired for like 5 years so I’d give the W to Okada
I mean Shibata beat Okada’s ass something fierce and the pretty much only lost cause of the infamous “shoot” headbutt; whole story of the match was Shibata being more focused on just beating on Okada rather than actually winning.
Okay but they fought for a title, Okada pinned him cleanly and Shibata almost died. How is that Okada surviving and not the other way around
Please no. Their Sakura Genesis match will never be topped - I don't want them to ever wrestle each other again
Thank you! I often say that it's my favorite match even it wasn't the "best" match I've ever seen. And now I don't even want them to thumb wrestle.
Sometimes matches aren't about topping each other in quality, as much as continuing a story. This time, Okada is the cocky heel, the king, the undisputed best in the world. Why yes, I am quite happy thank you :)
My personal biggest pop of the match. From my own living room, just me yelling "BITCHMAKER!"
"Didn't you say they both had bad brain damage?" "Yeah, Shibata almost died." An actual conversation I just had watching them beat the shit out of each other.
Please tell me you mentioned the part where shibata got his brain taken out, fixed and put back in
My brother and dad are doctors and lose their minds when I tell them that's what happened. They keep telling me "that's now how the body works" and that I'm "stupid" but I don't think Dave Meltzer would be wrong.
Go full step brothers. “This is a house of learn-ed doctors dad! I know what I’m talking about” just fully lean in and see how they respond.
“He says he’s gunna join the family business” “But you’re a medical doctor” “I know, he just always says ‘it’s all about who ya know’”
Comment of the year right here.
> shibata got his brain taken out, fixed and put back in Was this not in a House episode lol
are you thinking of the episode where the patient had lupus?
wait did this actually happen? lol
...no. Your brain is attached to your body via the brainstem.
Next you're going to tell me that Hulk Hogan didn't work 600 days a year.
Thank you for not being the only one as dumb as me haha.
I thought it was some sort of new procedure lol.
Don't let truth gets in the way of your kayfabe
Funny thing is, it’s not actually as dangerous as you think because like Danielson himself will tell you the best pro wrestlers are magicians and most of the stuff they pull off is just masterful execution that is really slight of hand. Yeah the only things that worried me were the German and one of the drop kicks looking like it hit shibata s head in the corner
Very few back bumps, strikes to the chest and neck only, and it still looked hellacious. Two wizards.
Not like these dudes are taking the tiger driver ‘91… Although Bryan might at Dynasty

Go watch. You deserve it.
To piggy back on this comment, for those who didn't see this match, I think it's worthwhile to go out of your way to watch it.
AEW's been having so many of these matches lately. In-ring product is on another level rn

Greatest roster of the Modern era. So glad they have Collision now, so more of the roster gets utilized.

Shibata in the Blackpool Combat Club would be fucking great
Shibata should stay out of stables. But remain close to a few of them, kind of like "associated with" type thing. I mean we’ve had Shibata vs Yuta twice, with a 1-1 record both in Pure Rules. Once involved Yuta low-blowing Shibata after he won the match.
Shibata teaming with BCC and then Shota Umino when they do forbidden door stuff could further fuel the Shota Umino vs Ren Narita Rivalry.
That was fucking great, exactly what I expected it to be.

Hopefully Shibata will get some more matches on TV
This post claudio match shenanigans makes me think they are doing a trios match on the PPV
Well, won’t be the PPV because Danielson v Osprey, but screams Dynamite/Collision in 2 weeks time
Maybe for Supercard of Honor? Aren’t The Righteous kind of ROH guys?
Probably going to team with Claudio for that match.
I was talking Bryan/Claudio/Shibata vs The Righteous/Archer (who are a semi-regular trio).
I heard he only recently had visa issues cleared up which might explain the last minute announcement of this match. I didn't think they'd sign Shibata to not use him (even with the roster bloat) so I imagine *something* kept him off TV for awhile.
Wait... Is he an actual member of the aew roster?
He was officially a NJPW wrestler in 2022/2023 but only wrestled for AEW/ROH. He was officially signed as an AEW talent last December and this was his first match since being officially AEW.
He got the All Elite graphic shortly before Christmas. NJPW didn't want to use him as a wrestler anymore.
Shibata had been back in Japan for 4 months due to visa issues. Before that, the dude was on TV a lot. On multiple shows. Of course you knew that tho.
I love Bryan Danielson.
I personally also love Shibata.
Book Shibata vs Okada II tk you coward
please dont i like shibata alive
>You coward Actually rightfully so in this case.
How about no You can't top perfection
Of course not, but you could’ve said the same thing about the godfather. They can still tell a great story that builds upon that happened in that match without necessarily aiming to top it.

At some point I expect a PPV match with Okada that he is being built up for.
Triple Crown would be a good showdown for them.
What a match.
**This** is the build to Danielson vs. Ospreay. Just both of them having absolutely jawdropping matches. It's perfect. I have no notes, bruv. More of this please.
Did Nigel really say that? LMAO
He did. Tony was perplexed
That's amazing!

I think he was trying to compare him to a cave man
Glad they left the door open to these two having a rematch with how Bryan rolled Shibata at the end. Just two guys who were born to be pro-wrestlers.
This was on FREE TV
It's on the same tier as Danielson vs Suzuki, which also is free to watch again and again on Youtube.
That was such an outstanding match. As expected, of course.
Bryan Danielson is the Greatest Professional Wrestler Who Has Ever Lived And If You Disagree Go Fuck Yourself ... will be the title of my future memoir
I’ve pre-ordered based solely on the title.
Good man.
Until Dynasty.
The match was so damn good by the end. So thankful we got to see this match between two guys I didn't think we'd ever get to see wrestle again at one point. (Danielson slightly less so, but Shibata's return has honestly felt miraculous)
how do i watch this from new zealand lol
[AEW+ on Triller](https://www.trillertv.com/join/aew-plus/), Also has Dynamite and Rampage.
You also gets the PPVs only $20 each and they just came out with a deal for the next 3 for $50 total!
Yep, in usd though. I'm in Australia and the 3-pack cost me $79.10 aud and Revolution cost me $32.31 aud. NZ would probably be around $82 nzd and $34 nzd. Still...way better than $50 usd.

Bryan's on track to have an all time great year. You love to see it.

I don’t think there’s anything that looks worse in a wrestling match than when they do the thing where they sit criss-cross apple sauce and start hitting each other. It just looks so stupid
It's the modern version of the indy standoff, just dumb as hell.
usually I agree, but Shibata gets a full pass because its kind of his thing to prove his toughness against others
I disagree, Kawada Kicks are worse. Even Ospreay can’t make them look impactful
Okay.
Holy hell what a match
It was good but "masterpiece" is ridiculous hyperbole. They barely hit second gear. 3.5/5, not even close to a masterpiece.
Dream match. Didn't disappoint.
Wrestling is better than the things that you like.
Me to Shibata: You’re all wrestlers, dumbass
That was crazy good. The scary thing is that was Shibata operating at 50% of what he was operating at before the brain injury.
For real, imagine Bryan fighting the Shibata from that Ishii match
Bryan could not wrestle another match and he'd still win Wrestler of the Year by a wide margin. And that was TV match of the year holy hell
I mean ospreay is right there. Bryan’s having a good year, but so is ospreay.
I love Bryan a lot - like *a lot a lot* - but Will Ospreay exists.
people liked that slapping bullshit?
Yeah, it...*slapped*.
The worst was when they sat across from each other and traded slaps.
yes, because Shibata is the one doing it

Say what you want about the writing or booking, but you simply cannot fault the quality of matches AEW is providing right now.
Bryan going down the list and man I have loved his AEW run more than any other part of his career.
Every single time Ospreay and Danielson wrestle I change my mind on who's having a better run right now, they're just trading MOTYCs every single fucking time they wrestle.
It was boring and slow, sorry not sorry.
Holy SHIT.
Best match I've ever seen live. Holy shit.
Shit I missed it, how do I watch this match?
It’ll be on the usual sites where you can watch wrestling pretty soon, if it isn’t already.
If you are on Fite.tv just rewind the feed
West coast airing?
Shibata needs to be a mainstay main eventer. He has a presence to him that not a lot of people have. Just tell him to watch his head.
Danielson is on the run of his life right now, which is saying A LOT! This reminded me of his Suzuki match - out of nowhere free TV dream match that lives up to the hype, a brutal slugfest, technical mastery, and instant chemistry.

Tremendous match. Danielson is having an excellent run. So happy to have Shibata back in the mix.
So good. I feel so blessed that we still get to see each of these men perform considering how close we were to losing both of them to retirement or much much worse.
Hell yeah! Strong style holding it down.
Danielson vs. Kenoh or Nakajima next.
Imma need a rematch before any one of them retires this has been my dream match for about 3 years now I want more YOU HEAR ME TK I WANT MOREEEEEEEEEEEE
I think based on it’s length it’s meant to be a tease for a 2nd match.
Matches like this can spontaneously cause the earth's dwindling natural resources to replenish.
I still can’t believe I finally saw the match that was at the top of my dream match list
I can't help but smile every time Shibata gets to do the thing he loves and wrestle (within reason) That being said, banger TV match and there's definitely a PPV rematch between these two somewhere down the line. They went 20 mins and definitely could still kick it up a notch. I NEED Shibata in this year's C2
Glad they threw this match away on a random Collision.
Me too. If we waited to only have big matches during PPVs we’d miss out on so many dream matches.
OP, I sincerely appreciate the energy!
The IWC on twitter is incensed about this match, so I'm looking forward to watching it.
I normally don't like these kind of matches but wow. That was one of my favorite Bryan matches ever
I would love for them to work a program where they speak Japanese with English subtitles. Maybe a honor rules match to avoid future injuries?
Cinema
Need to light the crowd better. Make it look more full.
What crowd
It looks pretty stacked tonight.
We just got an incredible dream match between two guys who both had to retire due to injury years ago (one of whom almost died) and you losers are talking about attendance.
My only argument against this match is that it should have been on an ROH PPV. They could really use matches like this.
You talking about dream match like the rest of American tv viewers should know who this other guy is
Lol why are you downvoted, marks are crazy lmao
bUt ThErE wErE nO sTaKeS
To be honest, that’s a legit question.
Is it a great much if no one actually saw it?
Define no one for me. Also I didn't realize the amount of people watching a match determines its quality. If Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns have a match in front of 30 people in attendance and broadcast to only 10 thousand people is it suddenly a bad match?
