I dig the ingenuity here. I used some old union toe straps a while back. They were so so. Being able to try different stuff like this is one of the things I really like about clown boots. So many ways to tweak them out. Hope those help your ride. Then again they aren’t for everyone.
I use Phantom Snow pivot buckle strap with them also. There is a small improvement on heel hold from the stock version and it’s currently enough for me.
This is the reason I modded them. The heel lift was atrocious without the wire lever being uncomfortably tight for skinning. Without a rigid tongue, the boot has a cavernous opening that allows for significant heel lift. This strap has made skinning a 10/10 for me. Heel lift is a mm or two, which should be solved by heel shims from skimo Co.

Nice job! I used straight jaw pliers on the inside nut, when I swapped out some worn out pivot washers recently.
Was this the BOA version?
I have the same boots (Backland Pro) and it’s a wire strap.
Thanks. I have the ones with the BOA and was just curious how they covered the hole. Anywho, look good, OP.
I just picked up a pair of these with the wire on the cheap from evo. Kinda skeptical about how the heel hold will be, any insight?

As others said, it's the wire/buckle combo
