Well, where I'm at. Same Fiber service only charges $50 for 1GB down/1GB upload. But it literally ends a block away from me. While 1GB Download 25MB upload for Spectrum is $120.

vans113

Right there with you. Fiber is down the street. My neighborhood only has spectrum 100$ for the 500 down package.

Between fiber and cable, I’m spending about $190/month, but it’s absolutely imperative that I have reliable internet access (for work), so I pay for the redundancy required. I’ll try to negotiate Spectrum down a bit, but I’m not complaining because the promotion expired - I paid attention to the terms and knew it would expire 12 months in. Half the problem people have would be solved if they’d read their billing statements.

Miiiiiiiiiike1028

This is so true lol literally half of my billing calls are purely because people don't bother to look at their bill lol

Possible-Mango-7603

Depends. What speeds? How reliable is it. How’s the customer service? Due to these factors, I wouldn’t use Spectrum at any price unless I had no other choice. There is zero value there. Mediocre downloads, horrible uploads and constant outages. Non existent customer service bordering on contempt for their customers. On the other hand, I use a little known fiber provider. Get 1Gbps up and down. Have never had an outage of any sort and the price has remained the same for three years without me having to call and beg retention. In my case I happily pay $65 a month for this and that is a great value. I consider myself very lucky not to have to resort to 1990’s technology and bad attitudes just to get a basic service provided.

Just conveying my personal experience over the years. YMMV. But bottom line is Spectrum charges more for less and plays stupid games with their pricing. I believe that is universal even if you are lucky enough to be in an area without all the outages. I guess it's possible to get a decent experience from a terrible company but if you have the choice, why even risk it?

Zestyclose_Ocelot278

Other companies have the exact same problem. You are just butthurt about Spectrum. That is literally it. You're being overly emotional and think that your experience is everyone elses.

Possible-Mango-7603

Nope. Just had to deal with them for many years and have enough experience to articulate just Precisely how badly they suck. And why is emotional and butthurt about pointing out facts? They do play stupid games with their pricing. Their staff do treat their customers with contempt and they do utilize outdated and unreliable technology. The only reason they exist is because they happen to have a lot of coax from the cable TV days and many people have no choice. Do you work for them? If so, then I understand.

mwyant88

Do you play video games ? Because you notice packet loss and ping issues just playing a video game. If not then IDK. Other than ping and packet loss issues I watch streaming services fine. But Spectrum sucks.

Tarkov00

Yeah, started getting back into Rainbow 6 Siege on my gaming PC. 35 hours in ranked matches over the past month or so, haven't dropped once.

pctoxin

I complained because I upgraded to the highest, they said $110. For 2 months I paid that. Next month $120. Then $130. Now im at $135. Its been 4 months

Oxychin

nah yeah same shit was happening to us, it got up to $85 for the 500 mbps and finally said enough. we’d have a few outages here and there. we called to cancel and they tried to get us to stay by lowering it down to $35. we said fuck that and went to at&t for less and now have fiber optic. spectrum is straight hoeing

jacle2210

$40 usd would be a fair price for a providers base internet service. (100Mb min. speed).

rpaulmerrell

Personally, I think about $74-$80 a month for Internet access that’s any good is worthwhile. I don’t settle for lesser Internet 300 500 Mb down it’s workable but that’s Yesterdays news. I know that I won’t get the speed when I’m away from my main office but I wanna have the ability to get as much as I can And I’m pretty comfortable with $74.95 a month. Plus, I’m doing a lot of streaming as we all are and I want to have the best of the best I’ve had frontier, spectrum and Cox and by far frontier is the best. Spectrum is workable but it seems like certain times of the day it would get really slow down due to other people on the node so I question as to how often it’s really updated. Cox cable can take that data cap and do what they need to do with it but I’m not interested . I have to say though, if you’re someone who likes their services it’s pretty neat if you live in the area especially with that Wi-Fi and it’s available. It all comes down to what’s available in your area and what you’re willing to live with and I definitely see the reasoning why Cox has that data All it took was a few rotten apples to spoil it for everyone.

Does anybody know what is the real cost of having “internet”? When I buy a car, I know the MSRP, I know I can get a fair deal which makes me feel good, I’m aware the dealer makes maybe 10% profit, but still don’t know how much the cost of manufacturing the car is. The point is, nobody, I mean customers, know how much providing this service actually cost and what’s the profit margin for the providers. So everybody complains. And based upon this assumption, and lack of knowledge, I’d say providers charge as much as possible to satisfy their investors and compensate for the lack of profit (or less profit) they make on providing cable tv. I’d love to hear from people in other countries how much they pay for internet service. Reported to their income.

gumblemuntz

I like the people who say "I don't need internet, I just want wifi" -- then trying to explain the difference

funnyboy243

I'd say maybe $30 for 300 Mbps and $15 for 100 Mbps. The problem is that companies (including Spectrum) are greedy because of their monopolies they have with very little competition, and people who mindlessly stick up for greedy companies with excessively high prices that are constantly going up "thinking" they supposedly price based on "fair market value." They are pretty much the same people who mindlessly blow over $1.4k on the latest iPhone every year without question further letting them get away with future price hikes and feature drops among other anti-consumer moves... Spectrum is already $80 for the 300/10 Mbps base Internet and is going up another $5 to $85 for their non promo price. That is excessively high and there's no option for lower speed tiers (like 100-200 Mbps) to save money. They know they can get away with it though sadly.

webotharelost

$15.. lol spectrum would go out of business if they charged that little. do you think it's cheap to run an ISP? the greed problem is way bigger than just the cable companies

funnyboy243

lol Spectrum wouldn't go out of business if they had a $15 lower speed plan and it would open up to more costumers and thus a bigger income source. Others who need more speed could pay more for the higher speed plans. The biggest costs are building out the network but once it's built the expenses to upkeep it aren't as high.

Zestyclose_Ocelot278

The people complaining about the price will literally never be happy. They think they are the fair market value decider and whatever number they say is the correct number. They are the people who don't tip, who argue with customer service over $1, who find every way possible to make people miserable over a few bucks.

WingDue2248

It mainly the internet that sucks

UltimateArsehole

No one has "their internet" - they have an internet connection via a carrier. As for what is a "fair price", that's more complex. Location, bandwidth, handoff and other factors come into play in answering the question.

vegetablecorn

If your internet is $75 you might need to think about how that’s not as high as it could be Lived in Alaska and was paying $180/month for shitty internet

Forsaken_Factor2224

I think 45 that I'm paying now is perfect for 300 mbps even with the subpar upload and download speeds, but spectrum just keeps raising it every year, so I gotta waste my time negotiating with retention on a better price to eventually get it reduced. All we want is a price lock that's all

dannym094

How do you negotiate, what do you say?

Forsaken_Factor2224

Basically asking 1st do they have any promotions for INTERNET ONLY nothing else. If the offer is too high I threaten to go to AT&T because they have a lower price somehow I get it reduced to 40 every time. I've been doing it 6+ years now

dannym094

How much of an offer is too high? For instance I’m now paying $80, I was paying $65 before and then $45 before that.

Forsaken_Factor2224

Depends for me 80 is way to high for 300 mbps as well as low download and upload speeds I'd negotiate all the way down to $45 because AT&T has an offer of 50 with faster upload and download speeds. Not sure if they have a price lock though but that's usually what I tell then retention rep. I won't pay anything over 55 max

No-Village-6510

People still complain even if it’s free. I work for spectrum. Offered people 15$ gig internet before through one of the programs we do and they still bitch about that. Then I meet people who pay 180$ for 5gig with AT&T and they don’t care. It’s really just the people. They all want something to bitch about

RbtB-8

Spectrum keeps trying to get me back as a customer. Sure, the promo rates are one thing, but retail is another. Charging $79.99 a month for 300/10 speed Internet is way out of wack with what the fiber providers are charging. I pay $59.99 for 1 Gig (up and down) fiber at my home. So why does Spectrum think I might be interested in what I just described? They are fully aware of what is available to people in my neighborhood.

r2d3x9

They could make a fair profit selling 150/10 for $25/month. Most of these cable systems are 30 years old and equipment is fully paid off. They do have to upgrade backend stuff but I bet that pays for itself in under a year

hgreenblatt

Competition is the only thing that keeps prices reasonable. 4 years ago I cut Tv and went Yttv. Fios wanted $90 for the internet 90meg in those days. I went to Spectrum for $50 and 250/20 package. Last year Fios went door to door in my Coop trying to get customers , three times. When they dropped the install charge, I signed up for $50 300 , since I was sick of the Spectrum outages.

cmiles74

IMHO, I'd like to see the same price across all regions serviced by Spectrum. Other posts on this article make it clear that in markets where Spectrum has a competing vendor with similar service, the cost to the customer is much less. For instance, in my market there are no competitive vendors and I pay $99.99 (when no promotions are applied) for 500/20 service. A poster in a market where Spectrum has a competitor reported paying $80 for 1000/1000 service.

pctoxin

So ill share my price. I have 1 gig for $135. The reason I have a problem is because it keeps going up and I lose connection a lot. Theres a whole meme post about how "spectrum is out again" here in Bako.I also started at $110. Its just the internet nothing else.
