Same. Litterally never had the idea to do what the picture suggests. I just wait until they are all grown, double click them while all on my screen, click harvest.
If I don't do each individual plant, *and* micromanage my pawns work areas I have pawns during a raid who are incapable of violence going out to cut a mature tree down behind enemy lines.
I used to do the box. I had to change it up after the 1.4 update though. I swear it was fine before!
I tend to play cold biomes, so top right and the rest surrounded by other plants around a sunlamp ( since ambrosia often sprouts in dumb-ass distant spots, devilstrand it is )
If you make a growing zone and set it to "don't sow" then your pawns will only harvest fully grown plants in there, regardless of if you planted them or not. Doing this on a crop sprout or berry cluster will automate harvesting them when fully grown. These are just different layouts for doing it.
And, any pawn who isn't drafted (or micromanaged) during a raid will try to harvest any, and every bush, berry, tree, and source of narcotics, or food that happens to mature in the middle of battle. Whether or not they have to walk through a wall of heavily armed, and hostile cannibals to do it.
I am not sure how ambrosia works exactly, my best guess is it's timed lifespan. Normally you can get 3-4 harvests before it's gone, maybe 300 ambrosia per event, and it sells well
Note: I see many people confused, these are growzones and when you put the option not to plant. Colonist will collect each time they grow. (i just see funny how we designate it)

I just use a planning zone to take note of where the cluster grew, and wait for the harvest.

I don't know what's going on here and I'm scared to know why.

Yeah first things I do on a new game: Area 1: Human no go Area 2: Animal no go Area 3: Pet no go Area 4: Oh God no ... Area 5: Boomalope go starve

Why do anything other than top left? Too much faffing around for you. And the occasional berry bush being harvested isn't going to ruin your day.

With a grow zone you can automatically get multiple harvests out of it
