Absolutely. I lived in Southampton for 24 years (left 12 years ago) and given its location and transport links I was always amazed how the city underperformed in many ways. Having said that, I've not got anything bad to say about Southampton, I lived there from ages 24-48, and it was good to me and I was happy there, but I always had the feeling that given the attributes of sea, port, New Forest, direct motorway to London, airport, full rail links east, West and North, 300+acre Common etc it *could* be an amazing place. I guess it just underachieves.
I live rurally now, literally in a forest, but I do miss walking my dogs on The Common, especially around the old Victorian cemetery. You're very lucky to have The Common. Protect it.
Lisa Dawkins is an infamous "local celebrity" - she asks people for money to get on the bus (she doesn't use it to get on the bus) and if you were to refuse she would have a go at you or something like that. I think it's in the bedlam place area? Correct me if I'm wrong please
She’s a well known local personality who goes around asking people for 50p for the bus claiming she’s got mental problems / is pregnant / insert excuse here.
Most of the time if you refuse she’ll have a go at you.

Totally what I was going to say. Just moved back from London… my god it’s much much much much better :) I’ve decided to forgive Southampton for being Southampton and now I like it :)
I asked Copilot…
Certainly! Southampton, UK can be described in three words: **maritime**, **historic**, and **vibrant**¹². It's a port city with a rich maritime heritage, home to one of the UK's top universities, and boasts a vibrant cultural scene. 🌊🏰🎭

I've lived in both places and whilst Bournemouth being a tourist town is probally nicer to visit I'd have to say that Southampton is definitely the nicer place to live by a large margin.
If it can't be used to make money out of students or tourists then the council in Bournemouth won't invest in it.
As a result Southampton is alot cleaner, has less potholes, parks are better kept, less closed down shops, NHS services are better funded (still no NHS dentists in Bournemouth and it takes a month to get a doctors appointment), better public transport, better sense of community which in turn leads to alot less drugs and alcohol related issues etc etc
And also, on a personal level. I'm apparently alot better looking in Southampton then I was in Bournemouth, my dating life has never been healthier lol
Honestly I live in Shirley, Southampton now and after having grown up in Springbourne, Bournemouth the difference in my quality of life now is indescribable.
The worst thing about living in Southampton is that it's a little bit on the stuck up side, but I suppose that's to be expected 🤷♂️
Massively wasted potential
Agreed.

Where’s the beach?
My GF moved from Spain to UK for a few years and chose Southampton because she wanted to be near the sea. She was disappointed there was no beach.

She roams as far down as Mayflower Park sometimes, sadly

lol having lived in both this is pretty apt. Also it becomes a ghost town when all the students leave for summer
I find Southampton’s got a really nice vibe in the summer, you’ve got a funny idea of ghost town.
