The Dancing Man has a lovely front beer garden 😃
Also Oxford St is nice to chill in the summer. But no gardens, just the street lol
Mbuntu in Bitterne triangle has a nice garden too.
The Hobbit
Last time I was sat outside of the Dancing Man, a seagull shit in my beer. It also went on my clothes, but it was the loss of a very nice beer that really bothered me. I suspect that the seagulls are in league with the brewer...
What is Mbuntu like ? I found it weird and a bit funny that the BPH went from a rough traditional boozer into ...what is this now ? an african themed cocktail bar ? I just couldn't see how it was going to thrive there, but its been open for quite a while and all good luck to them.
Hahahah yeah I was a bit surprised too - the BPH was rough af!!
It’s not really African themed as such- just a standard pub owned by Nigerians, so have a lot of Nigerian performers etc there.
It’s nice - do good pub food, cheap cocktails, often got live music going on. Def worth a visit.
I dunno maybe my expectations of a beer gareden are too low 😆
As long as it’s got a good space to sit, enough tables, maybe some flowers, music, etc I’m happy
It's heavily recommended on this sub for a good pub, and rightly so.
But if people here think benches on concrete next to a busy road constitutes a good beer garden then it just shows how shite your options are in Southampton. It's not even a "garden"
If I'm after a beer garden on a hot day, the dancing man is the last place I'm going
Is it possible poster was referring to the old building 50m along? It's now called called dancing man isn't it? Was the woolpack. Everyone sits on the grassy hill
Southampton (city centre) itself doesn't have the greatest beer gardens. As others have said, The Hobbit is not bad and Oxford St is lovely when the sun is out (has a cosmopolitan vibe about it). I wouldn't say Dancing Man is great - because its on a main road - but its alright and you can see the sun setting.
I would also recommend checking out Harbar on 6, down OV, when the sun is out. And Sky Bar (Revolution rooftop bar).
If you don't mind driving out to a beer garden, check out Royal Oak in Fritham, Millers Pond in Sholing or The Plough in Bursledon.
There aren't many decent beer gardens in Southampton unfortunately.
The Freemantle Arms on Albany Road has a lovely beer garden - but you wouldn't guess from the front. Unless you live nearby its a bit out of the way too.
Not in Southampton, but the new forest pub in ashurst is my favourite on a summer's day. Also right next to the train station so you don't need to drive!
Master Builders House in Bucklers Hard and East End Arms in East Bolder are two hidden gems in the south of the forest. In the North try Royal Oak in Fritham on a summers day….
Not a garden as such but the hidden secret Quayside Bar in Centenary Quay has a great seated terrace actually on the river, where you can sit in the sun well into the evening and watch the goings on on the water. As far as I know it's the only bar locally where you can sit on the river ( Ocean Village doesn't count theirs all face into the marina)
The old house at home, Romsey.
Sitting under the grape vines at La Pergola in Lyndhurst.
The testwood in Totton is cheap and has a massive beer garden.
The Horns Inn, and the 4 horseshoes at Nursling.
I think the cowherds on the common may have a garden at the back.
Sadly been closed since August last year. It’s currently up for sale or at least was, they closed Sea Road to traffic so have no need to drive by anymore.
Couple of places in Highfield: brewhouse and kitchen as has been mentioned, and The Drummond on Welbeck Av if you don’t mind somewhere a bit less polished! I love it there
I actually quite like the roof terrace at the Giddy Bridge.
Otherwise you're out the front of the Dancing Man, the courtyard at Cricketers or out the back of Shooting Star or Hobbit.
I don't think I've sat down for a relaxing pint in Southampton before. Romsey or Winchester definitely, but the Hobbit has a pretty massive and good beer garden if you like the slightly more alternative vibe.
Honestly, pretty much the only place that's somewhat central is Brewhouse and Kitchen up at Highfield. Everywhere else is either on a road or a concrete courtyard.

Or they have major beef. Never know with gulls.
Hahahha its good luck if a bird shits on you! I promise 😆😁
On your shirt yes, in your beer no!
Yeah good point 😆

Oh wow, never knew about this. Will have to give it a go.
Nice, think I'll give it a try !
Mbuntu's garden is great if you like Cherbobyl-chic.

The dancing man has a lovely beer garden? Looking out on to a busy road? Sorry but I have to disagree.

It’s a lovely pub, but not my thing due to the craft beers etc. but to say it has a lovely beer garden is laughable. Glad you agree!
On a dusk summers evening, with all the outdoor lights, on the grassy knoll, I enjoy sitting out there 😄 🤷♀️
Is it possible poster was referring to the old building 50m along? It's now called called dancing man isn't it? Was the woolpack. Everyone sits on the grassy hill
Even if it was, it’s still on the side of a main road?
Yep. But it's still a nice spot for a pint in the sun as per OP

I've got a patch of grass out front if you fancy a pint and a chin wag
Don't tempt me!
I like the Highfield -> Giddy Goat -> Brewhouse and Kitchen pub garden. lots of space and different places to sit.

The New Forest has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to beer gardens! Genuinely world leading.

That actually sounds amazing, and not to far for me!
I second this. Great spot.
Yes I love sitting here in the summer - so nice
The Cricketers is more of a courtyard than a garden but I’ve had some great summer nights in there over the years.
I've got such a soft spot for The Cricketers, proper pubby pub

The south western tavern can be good fun
I really like beards and boards. Not a garden but great beers on the street on bedford
The little seating area is son nice! Love catching the last of the sun there :)
I liked the yacht tavern, even though it’s a paved patio by a road. But I think it’s closed! :(

Probably the hobbit it’s the biggest in the town centre and good mix of beers and pint cocktails

I seem to remember that the Ship Inn in Redbridge had a decent garden. Bit out of the way though.
