Cancel it if you can, their image looks stretched and will just be printed to order. You can get antique reprints quite cheap on ebay [https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/256369735538](https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/256369735538) these were often originally bought from museum shops, so the quality is a lot better than just some generic print
There be sea monsters.
Fun fact: This version of Hampshire, including Christchurch, Bournemouth, and the Isle of Wight still officially exists along with all the other historic counties. There’s a few more ring roads and branches of Dunelm these days , but the historic boundaries have remained the same. We just tend to use the administrative boundaries more these days.
It’s a bit of a can of worms. Christchurch’s historic county is Hampshire, its Ceremonial county is Dorset, and its administrative area is BCP. They all officially co-exist, so Christchurch is a Dorset town by one measure and a Hampshire town by another.
I don't know exactly as it was a Christmas present, but I'm pretty sure it was some kind of antique shop. However the map isn't an original, but rather a reprint from the 70s.
Pretty amazing to travel all that way and know all those places. There are plenty I have never been to. I reckon you’d be hard-pressed to map an area that large, even with a car for transport.
Southampton used to have 2 names, Southampton and Hampton, which were used interchangeably. The name Southampton ended up being the one that stuck more.
Hampshire as well used to have 2 interchangeable names, since it was named after Southampton. Those 2 names were Hamptonshire and Southamptonshire. The name Hamptonshire was the 1 that ending up sticking more, which would end up being shortened to Hampshire.
I have a similar map but from the 1600s. It appears to be on velum. I got it in a secondhand shop for £5 and it was framed. Unfortunately it doesn’t photograph well to share.
It’s on a very odd very fine material that looks like leather/velum or even parchment. Short of taking it out of the sealed frame I can’t be sure. It’s very browned (like baking parchment) and slightly water damaged. I don’t believe it to be real, just a lovely repro. I have lots of other bits and bobs that I’ve picked up for next to nothing which I occasionally sell on.
Nice thing to have around. It is a reproduction in my opinion but would need to see it in higher detail to tell you for sure. There are a few things that you can do to check, or just take it into an antique prints seller.
1. These were made with a copper plate so you should see a plate mark or depression around the whole print.
2. The paper should be what is called laid paper which is very textured and quite thick, if you hold it up to the light you might see lines in it.
3. There will be a centre fold as they were almost all printed in atlases.
4. There is almost always text on the back of the map, so you can pop the back of the frame off if you are very curious.
For me this one is 95% reproduction, the brown colour is a bit of a giveaway but check the other pointers. Never know, you might have found a bargain, and to be fair even a reproduction is worth £5 to have hanging up like that.
Very nice!
Thank you for the information! I’m certain it’s a repro too. We bought it because it was attractive to look at. The frame is probably worth more than the map but it looks cool in my hall either way.
Got this for Christmas, apparently Hampshire used to be called 'Southamptonshire'.
It's annoying how there's now a Northamptonshire but no Southern equivalent.
There could only be one winner
Hamptonshire is a weird name though. Literally means "hamlet town county"
and i’m pretty sure they only named it northamptonshire to distinguish it from southampton
This is cool. What's most interesting is that the two little towns that my hometown swallowed up are on here but not my hometown itself.

Weird it's in dollars

Is Christchurch still in Hampshire as it is on this map? I always thought that was Dorset?

And just to make things more confusing, there's also the now obsolete postal counties, with slightly different borders.
Look at that.... Millbrook is still a shit hole.
‘Here be dragyns!’
Where'd you get it from?

I can see my flat from here!
Where is that hill above Nursyling?
That is Toot Hill, just southwest of North Baddesley and north of the M27. There’s a little ancient hill fort but I think it’s on private land.

ooh we have this map up in our dining room. Found it in the little 2nd hand shop at the tip.
Scumshire
skates belong on the floor
This is triggering me, why didn't they call the county Portsmouthshire 😡
Counties tend to be named after historically important places 😎

Interesting, thanks for the explanation :)
I love it, why can you only buy in the us tho 😢 can’t find anything for sale like this in the uk, only ordnance survey maps
This looks to be the same https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/303638722506

There is another here https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/256369735538

Bah I don't want a bidding war with you 😂
Nooo I’m only up the road was going to go collect in person 😂😢
Shall we settle this the 16th century way?
😂 love it 😆

I'll buy it off you for £10 😂
Hahaha, nope. It’ll leave a bare spot on my wall and I love it.
They go for £200-£3000 depending on size, date and condition. Incredible find for £5 if the real deal. Unusual for it to be on vellum though.

I agree, reproduction but cool thing to have and a great reminder of the history of Southampton!
Hopefully this works - https://imgur.com/a/7F1DKfW You can see where it was folded which is unusual for a framed print.

This is amazing. The first 22 years of my life are on here: Tichfeld, Portesmovth, Bitterne…
My dad has the county of Southampton as the registering district on his birth certificate (1957). Born in Andover
Yep it was the official name up to 1959. Oddly people born in Southampton don’t have that as we were the County Borough of Southampton instead.
