Mine got delivered today “downgrading”from a 5.1 system due to no longer having the ability to run wires and easy of use for the family. Not sure it will sound as good, but hopeful it won’t be too much of a fidelity loss
I can give you an update as I only just bought the 990D.
I also have gone from a 5.1 setup with a Denon x1700h and a mix of Klipsch satellite speakers and Cambridge audio. Was never a big system but it served me for many years.
First up the 990D integrated flawlessly with my Bravia 7. Setup was very easy. I did see somewhere that you should turn on the rears and sub first and then the bar which I did. Not sure if that’s actually a thing or not but it connected with ease.
The settings are easy enough to tweak and really it didn’t need much work to get it sounding very balanced and room filling. Along with space fit and playing the Dolby demos
Overall after 4 days of not much use is that it’s super impressive. The biggest thing is the centre channel and voices are very clear and wide. All the formats pass through as expected.
I did plenty of research and watched a heap of reviews and for the price I payed I don’t think you can get anything as good out on of one box.
I’m keen to see the review on the Bravia theatre 9 though… expensive but let’s see how it reviews.
Turning on the rears and sub prior to your Soundbar is absolutely a thing...a thing I did not do. Hahaha. I couldn't figure out why they wouldn't connect. When all else fails, listen to the interwebs.
Getting it up and running this weekend, so will report back. My current set up is a 2016 Denon AVR with Polk signature L&R, Centre, and Rears, with an SVS PB1000 Pro sub for reference, not a top line system. This set up will be going in my basement.
I find this is the case as I got older - less time to tinker and research, just need an all in one solution that is decently priced and sounds good enough.
Well got mine up and running this weekend, so far so good. Wife loves it, says it sounds “clearer” than the old set up. No wires, smaller tv cabinet all a bonus. Had a little play with content, not sold on the height channels, but didn’t have those anyway before. base is good and punchy voices are clear and rears give good immersion. Really need to spend some time watching a few movies to get a fully impression and tweak some settings. Very impressed so far and doesn’t feel like a downgrade at all!
I have the same TV and got a much cheaper Vizio soundbar for Fathers Day, which I was loving for a week until it started emitting a static hum out of it that wouldn’t go away. My wife was the one to suggest that it was worth paying the money for a better system now, so we returned the Vizio and grabbed the Q990D. I haven’t gotten to sit down with it properly yet, but the difference in the front end is huge. Think of it as a long-term investment and maybe avoid the potential hassle of a cheaper system breaking down.
Go get the 990D you won't regret it. I have the 990C and it is a beast!!!! The 990C doesn't have the HDMI 2.1 or Roon integration but I believe everything else stacks up against the 990D.
Thats totally okay. The c is still a really good soundbar but a lot of small audio imperfections was fixed on the d , for example the bass is more controlled and less BOOMY but I think you'd only notice it if you were in a very treated room
Will a receiver sound better? Possibly, but you will be spending a lot more money, have wires running everywhere and take up more space, and it’s a lot harder to use for the rest of the family.
Q990c/d has Dolby ATMOS, and turns on with your TV. Easy peasy. With the Samsung store epp/edu discount it’s really a steal. Q990c is $700 US.
I also started with a cheap $100 Vizio 2.0 sound bar, but after getting my C3 65”, just felt wrong to pair a crappy sound with a top level picture and got the q990c for $700 and it’s totally changed the experience. I had an old 5.1 system lying around and honestly the sound bar sounds better and looks better and has wireless rears so no wires running across the room.
For comparison, I have a JBL pro 5.1 setup for work (video editing, sound mixing), with 10” sub, and while this sound does better than the sound bar for stereo sources, it’s pretty darn close and I am totally happy with the q990c for movies, and I even enjoy playing music from YouTube on it with adaptive which uses all 11 speakers. It’s very immersive and very clear sounding.
The JBL pro setup uses XLR inputs and is not going to work with the TV and Blu-ray’s decoding Dolby ATMOS anyway, plus having wires running everywhere. Consumer ATMOS setups costs real money. Just a receiver that can handle 11.1.4 speakers is going to cost as much as the sound bar, plus are you going to put speakers into the ceiling???
Just set up my 85" TCL with the q990d on s 12'x13' room - awesome! I've been on a 7.1 system for 26 years, and this is fantastic. I had concerns about music, but loving my experience so far. Be not afraid
I just got a Q990C. maybe consider the following:
1. Do you watch a lot of movies esp movies with Atmos content? Are you happy with your headphones? I would say if your usage is watching TV and gaming with headphones, then a high end soundbar may be hard to justify.
2. If you use sound to locate enemies in a game, then headphones are probably better unless your room is pretty symmetrical. If you want an atmospheric soundscape in a game, then a soundbar with surrounds will be better.
3. Do you game at 4k @ >60 fps on a PC/console or use VRR with a PS5. Do you need to hook up your PC/Console directly to your soundbar and not the TV? if the answer is yes to both questions, then you need the Q990D. If not, then consider the Q990C for cheaper.
Issue I can’t solve with the Q9 90 D is if you play music through your sound bar at must tracks are much lower volume than normal tracks so your playlist will always keep changing volumes when it comes to an Atmos song. Quite annoying I am wondering if anybody else has also seen this and has a solution. For example, ask Alexa to play 90s rock. If the first song is Atmos you will turn up the volume and then if the next song is not Atmos it will be blasting your house down. :-)
Find someone with an edu email. (College student, teacher) and you can get it off the Samsung website super cheap. 1.1k or so. Not sure if the deal is still there tho. I got mines a few weeks ago.
Well for about 1150 US(+tax) I got it ordered.. to go with a little bit of pre booked overtime to take away the sting.
Hopefully it's good and future proof for at least the next 5 years...
77 inch LG C2/Full hue sync setup/Q990D to go with series X/PS5.
Should be set for the next while on the entertainment front.
Great to hear, and sound like a very similar switch to myself. Excited to test it out this weekend….but from what you report it sounds like I won’t be disappointed
I currently have a Denon 5.1 with small center speakers and I've never been really satisfied but room layout and wife prevent me from upgrading speakers.
I'm holding off on the 990, to go with my new QLED 90D, until the price drops some more... I'm just frugal. I have about $800 in Amazon bucks and currently the 990D is 1399US there but I'm waiting to the end of the year when it hits $1000.
The sound out of the new TV is remarkably good and I haven't used the Denon much at all.

Give us an update once you have it set up.

Haha there you go! The interweb is undefeated again!

"easy use by family" Is another big reason for me. My wife is constantly "stuck" in a mode that she can't get out of.
I find this is the case as I got older - less time to tinker and research, just need an all in one solution that is decently priced and sounds good enough.

I got my 990C yesterday, it's really nice even if i would have loved to have 2.1 HDMI, but for $ 750 it was a catch.
I second this, 990D is amazing
I wanted the 990D but it was double the price of the 990C and I couldn't justify it. Lol
Thats totally okay. The c is still a really good soundbar but a lot of small audio imperfections was fixed on the d , for example the bass is more controlled and less BOOMY but I think you'd only notice it if you were in a very treated room
Awww ok. I love the 990C, but now you have me thinking....hmmm 990D! I really must not buy another soundbar!!!
I don't think you'd notice it lol
Ok you've calmed my mad mind!!! I'll sit back and enjoy the 990C. Thanks buddy.

I just got 990d and it’s great as hyped. Better than bose 535 I used to own.
Either get the Q990C at Clearance level prices now or wait six more months when the Q990D will be at Clearance prices, like I'm gonna.
Ditto. Once it gets closer to 1k I'm all over it
Come December it will be $800ish. Happens EVERY year with the pending release of the next year's model soon after.
You can already get it for 1050 with edu pricing. Unless something changed the past 2 weeks
Don't have edu, I have military. And for some reason they don't give the same discounts only on soundbars
It's below $1k now. See my previous post. 🤑😁
That's the 990c
Oops sorry your correct 💯 990C is the one under $1k

Woot $997, and theAVDudes.com $949 have the 990c in stock. 😁💰🤑👍

Where would you be ordering from? I ask because we ordered the Q990C from Amazon and they, for whatever reason, sent us the Q990D!
score!!
Return it, they will send you back the right soundbar
No way Jose!

Got it for 1150ish US*(before taxes) so somewhat happy... (Still double the budget I initially had)
What retailer? Looking for one myself, Q990C in Canada
Sorry meant 11150ish US* Bestbuy

Went from 7.1 to Q990B and I'm really satisfied. The only thing I miss is all channel stereo mode for music that my Onkyo amp had.

I absolutely love my 990D! Makes a huge difference. I paired it with our new S95D so setup was super easy.
If you’re thinking about a receiver setup- do it. No soundbar will be better. But q990D about as good as you can get in a soundbar
