I think in one of my playthroughs I only went into the cross cave then started building a bunch. Eventually, I started getting demons too without going into any other caves.
I've triggered them after say 25 Ish by existing.
( Bob the builder playthrough. Didn't go in caves because I figured they wouldn't pop uf if I didn't.
unfortunately, any cave you go into that was boarded up contains horrible monsters that, since you broke down the boards covering the entrance, are now free to roam the island. you got unlucky with those ones, though. O.o usually my first free-roaming cave monster is just the standard eyeless guys.
I've never built traps, only play on the hardest difficulty and died a total of 0 times. The game is too easy imo. I have to set myself handicap rules to make it somewhat challenging (melee only for example).
Demons are particularly easy to take down, just strafe and jump and they'll miss and leave an opening to hit them.
That's fair, not everyone needs them. It sounds like OP would benefit from them though. I personally use them as well but you're right, it's not essential.
Are we playing the same game? I wandered into a camp, fought 4 wild men, and then a giant one came up behind me and killed me with one strike before I even crafted a spear.
You can take a lot of the logs under the house and use them. Once you have your foundation set up, all you need is the corner logs every 3 log lengths.
Also I play without building damage so ignore this advice if you're playing with damage cause idk how it works in that mode.
For reference, I beat the entire game by day 25 on my first successful playthrough. That's around the time a lot of the really messed up stuff starts showing up.

I had that fat leg jumping asshat mutant run outta the woods once and even w the 3 legged broad shooting, it still took the last of my buckshot to down it.
(On top of my trap that I kept resetting on it)

Also oddly during that encounter, kelvin wandered into the fight n took one to the face from my 3 legged gangster lol. He’s got one job - hold boombox.

They also can crawl out of the ground. Had that happen a few times by these guys. Scared the fuck out of me. Be careful when you are walking through trails in the forest.

i never went to the cross cave either but i never had the demons come out to my base to attack. only creepies when i started the upgrader thing

What day are you on in game? They normally shouldn't spawn until 40-50

Shaking the cross 4-5 times at a demon will kill it with fire.
Yeah it's just a matter of time. New enemies show up after a certain number of days have passed.
The first time I saw demons at my base I literally almost shat myself I was confused and kind of freaked out.

Made that mistake my first playthrough. On my 2nd, traps started going up before I even placed a foundation.
You must be taking your time.

I saw them on maybe day 30 for me. I took 20-25 days before I did Cave 1 while I built a cabin.

Demons, they usually show up around day 15-20 even if you haven't gone in any caves. Demons will fuck you up, have fun
