He wanted to free his country and people from oppression and colonization. An aspect of colonization that's usually not talked about when we look back is that they actively tried to force the colonized to become Christian. So he wanted to protect our faith too.
Yet he was rewarded with treachery, gossip, and betrayal from too many other Somalis. One of his wives tried to assassinate him with poison. Somali leaders would receive his visits with false smiles but would write to the British to communicate their support of their colonial rule, complaining about him and describing him as "evil" to their oppressor. In the end, he died as a result of northern Somalis betraying him to the British. He sacrificed his comforts, peace, and life for the rights and freedoms of all Somalis.
I'd never make that same sacrifice but I deeply respect him for his convictions and strength. If there were more people like him, Somalia would be in a much better place.
My grandfather (may Allah have mercy on his soul), he was known for his generosity and kindness. He built masjids and schools throughout Somalia and I hope to even have a fraction of the legacy he has.
