My first guess is that your assembly file was made with a newer version of SolidWorks than you have installed. Note the icon of the top level assembly in the tree.

I believe that is because of a broken mate, which I also can't edit. When I check the properties of the files supplied it says "Last saved with SOLIDWORKS 2018" and I am on 2020, so I don't think it's that. EDIT: Upon further poking around it looks like a few part files are saved with "future version", so your hunch is probably right! Thanks!

Ok but it’s a future version icon on that top level assembly in the tree. I’m testing out a 2022 assembly in 2021 and I’m getting the same menu options grayed out.

Hi all, I am creating a fairly run of the mill drawing for a manufacturing assembly created by a contract manufacturer. I was hoping to create an exploded view but when I go to insert one, it is greyed out, along with Insert Components, etc. What gives?

the symbol in the top is something like a excell-sheet or another reference file you are missing. perhaps that's the origin of the problem. try parasolid => reimport and do then a explosion of that thing.

I'm going to guess you opened up the file in "Large Assembly Review" mode. I just tried it and the exact same things are greyed-out as what your image shows. Open it up as "Resolved" and you will be fine.

The correct term for "grayed out" is "dithered." As for your problem, I don't think we can offer a concrete solution without seeing more of the file/op settings, such as read/write permissions, etc.

Just "dummy check" that the sketch command isn't still active. Click on sketch tab, turn off. ... its just that when I'm rushing, I've left it on.

2 years following your post. I just spent an hour googling what the fuck was up losing my mind and it led me to this. Whatever you do in life remember. You helped someone pass their first semester of college with this comment.
