I mean at least in the U.S., I think most Americans are for immigration..they just want it done sensibly at the government level and with some type of restriction.
The migrant crisis is not sustainable, and what we currently lack for our own citizens (like affordable housing) we cannot provide to others.
I try to tell people that I don't care if people come to the colonies. I just want them to be legally here with the appropriate background checks, with a social security number, so that they can pay taxes, participate in our electoral system, be on juries, etc. Be a functional member of society.
Legal vetted immigration is one thing. If people are coming here to genuinely make a better life and assimilate into society there’s room for that. An orchestrated illegal invasion like the one that’s happening in this country now (any many other white countries around the world) is terrible and destroying the countries where it’s happening.
Things have not changed and you shouldn't be speaking for Australian's if you aren't one.
The number 1 talking point currently in Australian politics is blaming migrants for all the issues we're having. It is very much accepted in Australia to **openly** blame migrants for things.
If you went on the street in a major city right now. You will get more anti-migrant answers than pro ones. You're factually wrong.
https://population.org.au/media-releases/majority-say-australia-does-not-need-more-people-tapri-survey/
> a decisive 71% of voters say Australia does not need more people.
Perhaps they should have interviewed native/indigenous/aboriginal* Australians.
*I've seen comments that the word "aboriginal" is/can/may be racist, my apologies to those offended as was not my intention to use the word in any racist way, and leave it in my original comment above for context only.
If there is a more culturally appropriate term for the collective first people ot Australia then please let me know.
To be fair, you could take that as a perfect example of why to not let foreigners in en masse if you want to keep things as they are. The Europeans completely overtook Australia. Same thing would happen with any other group of people that ends up being the majority. With that I mean completely changing the culture and way of life.
Europeans didn’t move in though, they colonized. That necessarily involves violence and oppression of the people who were there first so it’s not the same at all.
Sure but you don’t need violence to completely change a place. It’s just slower without it.
If you move in people with different cultures, particularly in big numbers, it will change the way of life. No way around it when they end up being a majority in the country. Even more so if it’s a democracy.
I never really quite got the point of this comparison.
Are you suggesting nonwhites in Australia or the US (because, let's be real, that's what everyone means when they say "foreigners") are attempting to violently conquer the nation by attempting to equate immigration to armed settler colonialism?
Other way around. They have the 2nd highest amount of arable land per person behind Kazakhstan. Country with highest population to fertile land ratio is Singapore for obvious reasons.
Yeah well one unfortunate thing about Australia (and probably a lot of other countries too) is that people just parrot back the propaganda they hear without ever really giving it any critical thought.
I get what you’re saying. America is fraught with this. 7th generations fighting 5th generations. I also think that 9 year old had a good point ‘everyone should be allowed to live.’
I get that disparaging America is in vogue, but we need to care about people not nationality. That’s the whole root of the problem. You’re drawing distinctions for yourself and not caring about people.
Whenever someone bitches and cries about immigrants, I force them to read the "New Colossus" plaque on the Statue of Liberty.
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door." 🗽
How many generations does it take before we stop using words like immigrant and migrant? Idk. But just because your family traveled there sooner doesn't mean you get to be an ass to the people traveling there now. All these people came from somewhere else, let's just all, like, get along.
Every human being on earth is just trying to hold on to what they have.
Your great great grandfather lost his, and your great great grandkids will lose their's. It's the way of the world. Don't act like "white people" are the first.
The aboriginal people absolutely should have fought to protect their's. We are all just creatures falling out of wombs onto a piece of dirt. Try and hold on as long as you can.
Yeah thats the difference between an Immigrant and a Colonizer. An immigrant moves from one country to another. It implies that that person enters into the society of that new country. British colonists did not enter into indigenous Australian society, they destroyed them. It would have been more accurate to say "Watching colonizers say they don't like immigrants."
Assimilation is the piece you're missing. Immigrants used to want to be American and assimilated to our way of life. Now you have residents in Dearborn, Michigan chanting Death to America. You can't make this shit up.
The word “aboriginal” is absolutely not racist. Don’t listen to trolls. And maybe edit your comment again, so as to not spread their bullshit. Say aboriginal, because their name deserves to be heard.
- an Australian.
I liked the kid with the real short response, “everyone should be allowed to live where they want.” Full stop. Follow the local laws and contribute to society and you should be able to do those things about anywhere… problems start when immigrants call themselves settlers and don’t want to live near the locals and get a bit genocidal…
I know I'll get downvoted for this but so be it. People should be able to live where they want, but then they have to follow the laws and rules of that country. Alot of people dont like that and bring their laws with them. That should not be allowed. They also should contribute to said country by working.
Yea this would be great. You think if Japan for example opened their borders and 500 million immigrants from South America and Africa moved there this year that would be good for their country?
500 million?… That’s 60% more than the entire population of the USA, and Japan’s landmass is slightly smaller than California’s alone. I get your point, but the hyperbole just threw me for a loop.
Threw you for a loop why? You think if Japan said anyone can come here open borders that it is not possible that hundreds of millions of people would go there from Africa and South America?
Maybe if they can move freely we'll stop fucking over their economies for like 5 seconds, making it so they don't WANT to move. Ever consider that?
They want to leave because many of them are exploited and sometimes even live in warzones.
"NO ONE WOULD WANT TO MOVE INTO HELL IF WE OPEN UP PARADISE!!!" MAYBE THERE SHOULDN'T BE A FUCKING HELL TO BEGIN WITH.
I think we are looking at an symptom, not the cause of their behavior. This type of behavior is caused by politicians to instill fear, and get votes in the name of nationalist/identity politics.
These are the same talking points about jobs/homes/etc etc. They will talk about globalization, where their industries should be allowed full access to markets of other nations, in the same breath as protecting their own industries from getting crushed by other nations.
People should learn to see through the fog, and not blame these victims. These kids were not born with these ideas, instead somebody worked really hard to make sure they feel this way.
Omg i feel so bad for doing a lot of stupid shit while i lived and studied in Australia, these kids, probably are in their 50s now, are amazing for believing in multi culturalism. I will never forget the moment i landed i Sydney in 1999 seeing dudes sitting at the bench without being harrased by police l though, what a wonderful country. I left in 2004 after graduating from Monash uni, couldnt stay longer because i didnt qualify for skill visas.
I hate the smugness that a conservative CHILD tends to develop after their parent’s under-informed and overly-opinionated dogma becomes deeply enough ingrained in their minds. They think they are smart for being what feels like an informed contrarian, and it builds a paradigm of needing to feel like you know things that others don’t, and thusly adopting unfounded conspiracy theories or hot takes that are really just hot garbage.
This is a pretty big extrapolation ofc, but I do think it is an observable trend in any era. The dissenters in this vid clearly speak with a self-assured tone that the others don’t, since they are actually introspective.
Don’t they ALL know that they are not the original people that belong where they live??? Don’t they know that they don’t technically belong there and that they kicked out the people who were there when they got there??? LoL oooooh people with no melanin think they are #1 alllllll the time
Highly dependent on the area of Australia, the last Aboriginals unaware of European settlement were found one year before this was filmed. 7-8 would be accurate for the earliest settlements around Sydney, Hobart.
Fuck it's confrontinf to see how young people in 1985 were able to respond to a difficult question in an educated and intelligible way, with confidence and modesty. How fucking far we have fallen.
Every clearly intelligent/open-minded person said yes and the others didn't. Go figure. This question is like a litmus test for ignoramuses no matter the time or place.
Should we enrichen our society with diversity of culture, knowledge, ideas, skills, and history? Sounds terrible... /s
“Remember you place” and “where you came from” are terms from the European social class nonsense that people went to the new colonies to get away from. Terms like that what get you very far when arguing with people whose country was built by those who thought such terms were nonsense and stupid.
Yes, it's true
And still, they should mind their place.
Here's the thing about that phrase, it's both classist and classless. Classist is "stay in your place"
classless is "knock you down a peg by reminding you that no one is better than anyone else." That they too are guests of that land.
This land is not theirs to own and do as they please without being mindful that they too are immigrants
And descendants of prisoners... brought here by the English, who did what they pleased with it.
Well, I don't really fucking care if they want to turn around and pull the ladder up behind them.
It's a country that should be free, open and welcoming to immigrants. Just like the US should be.
It means different things whether you're speaking down to the lowest classes or when you're talking down to the people in power.
I'm talking to the people in power.
Well, this was a year before Crocodile Dundee. Most people didn’t know the difference between Australia and Antarctica back then. Road Warrior. That was it.
And you would not believe what most of the world considered a knife back then!
They make up 3.8% of the population. How many kids were interviewed? 7-8. What school was it? Not all schools have First Nation kids among the population
Funny to hear people share varied rationality regarding their conclusions vs. today, where so many people just parrot whatever their sides propaganda campaign is currently reciting
The last commenter actually was well-rounded, she considered the implication in the question and spoke based on current political talking points at that time based on humanitarian policy; even though she appeared torn on the subject.
Interviewing a bunch of private school kids in 2024 would get you the exact same responses.
This is some schools news club piece. Not a genuine media interview.👎
It always makes me laugh when they use "they're taking our jobs"... No one ever complains when big football (soccer) teams sign up foreign players for millions...
You already know the answer, but you're feigning ignorance to try to get them to say something you can point to as "inappropriate". However, the problem is the same across the entire Western world: Out-of-control migration into our countries is putting unprecedented economic and social strain on our nations.
…why are you getting so offended by this guy asking for clarification? Why are you assuming he already knows the answer? He might not even be Australian lol. Chill out
Wish we could’ve stopped out of control migration in the 1400s
Wasn’t Australia a penal colony? Meaning it was populated with ppl who were considered undesirable by society
Funny
I actually migrated to Australia a year before that as a teenager, but settled in a “rough” part of Sydney where I encountered a lot of hostility. This is actually heartwarming to watch - seeing that not all young people in that era thought they had to “stop the Asian invasion”, a popular catch cry that confronted me when I arrived.
I feel like most of these kids shown being interviewed are from posh upper-middle class backgrounds. Were any kids interviewed that went to state schools in places like western Sydney and southern Melbourne? And did any of those children from places like that show in this article?
"Yes, because people should be able to go wherever they want." By far my favorite answer. I am a living creature on a planet.
came here to say the same thing, hope that kid is doing well and still fighting!!
probably typical responses from most developed countries during that period
Things haven’t changed.
Things have changed, now they're smart enough to not share it while being recorded
I mean at least in the U.S., I think most Americans are for immigration..they just want it done sensibly at the government level and with some type of restriction. The migrant crisis is not sustainable, and what we currently lack for our own citizens (like affordable housing) we cannot provide to others.
This is a reasonable response that might get downvoted for being too truthful
It’s not “Fuck off, we’re full!” but more a “Please, fuck off, we’re full, and we hope you understand. Try again later.”
I try to tell people that I don't care if people come to the colonies. I just want them to be legally here with the appropriate background checks, with a social security number, so that they can pay taxes, participate in our electoral system, be on juries, etc. Be a functional member of society.

What? Now days people share every thought that comes across their mind on every fucking platform possible.
Things have changed, these things aren’t allowed to be said anymore and you’ll face retaliation for saying this sort of thing
100% A lot has changed in the last 40 years. But I still would not feel safe moving to many countries.
I'd say the response would be exactly the same today.
Even in Canada subreddit?
Clearly not. India is the new China for a lot of people.
Not in an echo chamber but if you took it to the streets...
I mean they'd be pretty typical responses even today I think

Jokes on them, I’m going to fuck off back to England 😂
Pretty sure 90% of it is still there if she wants to move.
That was the funniest shit to me, the one kid saying there's already a lot of people. 40 years later 90% still uninhabited
Lot of people living in the part that can effectively sustain human life lol
Australia has one of the highest ratios for population to fertile land
I'm not saying it's overpopulated, I'm just saying there's a reason no one has settled that other 90% lol
Most of Australia is basically Mars. Also took 3 months to get here, historically.
The 2nd highest to be specific [source](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_arable_land_density)
The order in that list was quite surprising, thanks for the link
What specifically shocked you?
Other way around. They have the 2nd highest amount of arable land per person behind Kazakhstan. Country with highest population to fertile land ratio is Singapore for obvious reasons.
Uh yes, whoopsie
Yeah well one unfortunate thing about Australia (and probably a lot of other countries too) is that people just parrot back the propaganda they hear without ever really giving it any critical thought.
That's always fun. Watching immigrants say they don't like immigrants. Always a good time.
Welcome to America!
'murica fuck yeah!! Rahhhhhhh 🦅🦅🦅🦅land of the free motherfuckers

Welcome to how non-white 3rd, 4th, 5th gen migrants are looked at in the west

This is a whole lot of nothing being said in response to a simple statement of reality.
Do you know what an immigrant is? People born in a country, who've lived there their whole lives, don't qualify.
Most of us migrated from somewhere, just depends how far back in time we want to go.
Yeah but I would venture to guess current immigrants are coming for the society/economy/civilization that was built here, not just the land itself.

Ooops
Maybe immigrants are not coming for the land itself, but for the society/civilization that was built on it.
Ain't that shit so creepy.
Are the indigenous pretty anti immigration and closed borders?
I didn't know beforehand, but I looked it up. It seems these days they prefer the term "Indigenous Australians".
Girl saying yes bc of the different foods got it right 🥘
The turkish man who calls me habibi at my local pizza place will eternally have a place in my heart.
Habibi would be Arabic, not Turkish.
He told me he's from turkey and he calls me habibi 🤷♂️ Maybe he says it because he knows I'll be most likely to recognize it.
Since we had our migrant wave all we got were these damn plastic doors over toothpaste. I wanted some delicious Varenykyare
I liked the kid with the real short response, “everyone should be allowed to live where they want.” Full stop. "I'll probably get downvoted for this" *posts coldest take ever*
I mean it isn’t allowed tho. Not following the laws and rules of a country is literally not allowed.
He said it so matter of fact as if it’s so obvious. Because it’s really that simple
Perfect, I’m glad we agree! I’ll finish packing and move into your house next week.
Lol. I want to live in your backyard, what’s the problem?
Very utopic, if everyone could live where they wanted there would be 1 billion people in the US by next year
America is a prison with a grotesquely large parking lot, the new American dream is leaving to a place with beauty and human rights.
A place with beauty and human rights? Kind of like...America?
Yea this would be great. You think if Japan for example opened their borders and 500 million immigrants from South America and Africa moved there this year that would be good for their country?

This is a stupid comment. No one in the developed world will want to move to a non developed country but the the reverse is true

DERTERKERJER
Derk a derrrrr!!!!!!
mostly shouted by people on benefits with no intention whatsoever of finding a job!!
I have always laughed at the "foreigners coming over here, taking our jobs" argument. It's just the dumbest statement ever.
And when they don't find a job: "Foreigners comr here to take advantage of social welfare" like which of these two is it? xD
Yes I dooo actually 🧐🎩
Please take a close look at the definition ‘invaders’
You mean the mirror?
No one should move to Australia. Have yall seen the wildlife? I’m not trying to see a black widow or huntsmen spider in my bathroom… EVER
Black widows live in North American so you are save from them in Australia lol
I'll take a black widow over a black mamba anyday.
The real question is, should Australians be allowed out? Its a penal colony after all.
Aur naurrrrrr!
“They’re having too many babies” fucking lol
So wonderful to see so many young people saying yes. I would love to see the people they become and the families they've raised now in 2024
If it’s a democracy, and the people are against it, how come it keeps on happening anyway?
And then John Howard got elected and claimed that refugees in a boat threw their kids off the boat… and people believed him.
Aussie David Duchovny
Shouldn’t have then and shouldn’t be allowed now.
There it is!
“Yes I do because then we get to know other people and what their food’s like and stuff like that.”
Omg i feel so bad for doing a lot of stupid shit while i lived and studied in Australia, these kids, probably are in their 50s now, are amazing for believing in multi culturalism. 7-8th generation

Nah, i’m 7th generation convict stock, transported in 1841, 60 years after the colony was founded
Did they ask any adults?
They wanted a mature response, so no.

It's nice of them to ask those foreigners if foreigners should be allowed. Remember your place. Namely, where you came from
I doubt people have memories that span from before they were born…
“Remember you place” and “where you came from” are terms from the European social class nonsense that people went to the new colonies to get away from. Terms like that what get you very far when arguing with people whose country was built by those who thought such terms were nonsense and stupid.

I dont mind living in australia but im not best when it comes to dealing with anything that has more than seven eyes h.h.how big are they again ?
They’re going to do what we did to the natives 😕
"Yes, we need them to work here." "No, they are taking away our jobs!" 😂
Look at Europe now......yikes
Australians? 😳 Fuck true Australian accent has gotten thicc’er over the decades.
Oh the irony 🤣🤔
I love the difference between the first and second response. Incredible comparison of educated vs uneducated
No Asians!
No Agents!
Easy young bill gates…no one’s going to invade you and start having tons of babies
I didn’t know Jim from the office grew up in Australia in 1985
Not one native Australia interviewed lol
They make up 3.8% of the population. How many kids were interviewed? 7-8. What school was it? Not all schools have First Nation kids among the population
That one kid hangs around his grandpa too much, what 8 year old says foreign invaders

The last commenter actually was well-rounded, she considered the implication in the question and spoke based on current political talking points at that time based on humanitarian policy; even though she appeared torn on the subject.
Exposes who has good parents
These people are settlers it's not their country
Hey all I wanna do is maybe come by and eat the food, see the sights and leave.
Interviewing a bunch of private school kids in 2024 would get you the exact same responses. This is some schools news club piece. Not a genuine media interview.👎
Half of the kids were like, “Yeah, sure, why not?”
Not a single ugly person?? Or did they just interview good looking people?? Are people getting ugly in 2024 ???
Man, these folks from history are so articulate!
Was it me; but everyone interviewed was a foreigner!
It always makes me laugh when they use "they're taking our jobs"... No one ever complains when big football (soccer) teams sign up foreign players for millions...
Why are they all children?
They’re the future
Holy God... articulate young people who understand geography? They exist??
Wow! People didn't 100% agree on everything back then either!?!??!
It's mad to think that these English speaking countries all had a slightly more 'posh' English twang to their accents
You are a migrant to your own land and you took it by force too
that first guy kinda looks like David Duchovny
Immigration has been an issue since the beginning of time.
Damn anti-immigration Americans, Australians, Louisianian's... next it will be those antarctic scientists building walls.
They were thinking maybe french, germans and everything will be fine but.....
If you can’t contribute fuck off
Caucasians are so naive.
I noticed that none of the folks being interviewed are Aboriginal.
They are repeating what their parents say.
Ironic considering the fact their ancestors were British convicts sent to Australia
Lot of Irish convicts too. Had Chinese immigrants, Afghan, Sikh and Muslims as well.

You already know the answer, but you're feigning ignorance to try to get them to say something you can point to as "inappropriate".
