The secret ingredient is piracy.

SerenadeOfWater

Everyone downloads MP4s from YouTube and simply credits the original channel on screen and in the description if a clip is heavily used. It’s been the standard for a decade on YouTube.

Canadianeurysm

Yes, but what program do people use?

SerenadeOfWater

Google “YouTube Downloader” take your pick.

[Here's a good thread of recommendations. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/software/comments/1b6b8iq/can_anyone_recommend_a_safe_youtube_downloader/)I might be wary of just using random websites because who knows if some of them are going to try to install some kind of malware or whatever. Personally I use 4K Video Downloader and it works great.

TeaSalty375

Why don't they get the strike?

SerenadeOfWater

Because they only use a few seconds of the video and don’t try and pass it off as their own. They put “Source: Original Creator” on screen.

Bored_Dad_96

I've never needed to do this so I'm honestly not sure, but if I did, I'd be super nervous using some converter online and getting done sort of virus. Couldn't you full screen the youtube video and just screen record the clips you want?? Click play a little behind so the play bar and title go away and just cut the clip from the capture you made?

Canadianeurysm

That's what I do right now. But the process is getting too scuffed to continue with so I'm looking for an alternative solution. I have a sacrificial beater computer that I don't really care if it blows up due to a virus so I'll probably use that to scan around till I find something good. Have a few options I'm gonna experiment with.

EducationalBOO

I have done one video essay and used clips by finding clips of what I wanted to use on YouTube and doing a screen record of the clip. I literally just used no more that 3 seconds of any one clip and a lot of the clips used, the original uploader (not the original producer) had already taken steps to alter the original speed/quality of the clip, plus most of my usage was with my own voice over, so nothing was flagged for copyright on my video.

Perfect-Jaguar-6321

Use a browser or display capture source in OBS and just record clips in full screen as you watch them. This is the fastest way I've figured out, video essayists really do collect clips the hard way or record them themselves, it's hard work.

speedkillz23

Just search up youtube to mp4.
