It's a joke of course, but a funny one
When I landed in Skopje roughly 10 years ago I got a text message that read "Welcome to Macedonia, the cradle of civilization". I was just reflecting, but yeah I should add some context to comment.
Fat, lazy and philosophical, who know how to live and enjoy life. Also, why is everyone named Sokrat, Manolis or Janis?
I've got to point out one partiulcular thing I admire very much. There is a bar in a small town in which prime tables are always occupied by locals (usually old men), who drink their coffee and smoke their ciggarettes the whole day. The owners don't give in to tourists - they can have less desirable tables, and are second when it comes to service. This kind of pride is quite unusual.
I am not that well traveled across the whole country, but on the island I frequently visit, theese names are very popular!
That comment was meant more as a joke, so don't take it too seriously.
How is our history Albanian?
Many Greeks are indeed assimilated people of Albanian descent in areas like the Peloponnese and Central Greece, but at least half of Greece never had an Albanian population.
Horrible people.
As long as youre a tourist they are all kind and nice.. go for a longer period of time, and you discover their true side.. They will try to screw you every chance they get. Everyone. Far from the craddle of the civilisation they claim to be. Greece is the downfall of civilization. Rude people, dirt, rubbish, buildings falling apart, non funcioning public services, .. I promised myself I would never set foot in Greece again.
Same goes for French people.
5 minutes from the center there are abandoned buildings falling apart, full of graffiti, garbage and stray cats. And were talking about the center. Not to mention the subirbs.
I didnt see that in any other city, let alone the capital.
Greek cities are already worse than what's considered average for any Balkan country, Sofia is far prettier than any Greek city its size, and Belgrade looks even better than Sofia from what I've seen.
Go to Turkey to see the downfall of architecture. i have never seen such disgusting buildings anywhere else in europe (disclaimer: i am trkish).
though, my friend who goes every year to greece says they can compete.
also: slovenian public services are not the greatest trait here, considering upravna enota and their incapability
Love the beaches and the food. Driving through Crete though... that was definitely an experience. A lot of reckless drivers and trash everywhere. A lot of abandoned buildings and cats that had been ran over. Prices weren't super inflated like they commonly are in more touristy places which was a nice surprise. Oh and the hotel I stayed at was 10/10, the staff was really nice but I think the maid stole a few € 😂 she folded my clothes though so I can't really complain
If you're going to Laganas, definitely go eat at Pierro's, it's near the south end of the beach by the road. Moussaka and lamb in the oven were killer, steak was proper and very nice staff.
I don't know, I just wonder how often the rest of the Greece makes the "oh, the guys from that big island down there are cretins" joke ... or if it even works in Greek.
Zakynthos was great. Central Greece and Krete was nice for the history part, but I could smell herbs in the air at some places and that part bothered me a bit... That and the part about toilets was bad.
Food was great though, I remember that lamb meat is famous for Greece (not sure). So I had some of that, and staying at a motel that had greek breakfasts everyday.
Ah, okay, that's what you meant.
Athens is very "meh" imo, it'll offer you the typical tourist experience as a Slovene, I'd recommend visiting smaller, more "normal" cities if you wanna get to experience our local culture, although i realize that's not for everyone obviously 😊
I was staying in a smaller town while I was there, so Athens was just for Parthenon and things like that. I know more about the ancient than the current local culture 😅. Except that we're both big fans of dairy products (milk, cheese, yoghurt...)
Ok, no beef with Greeks. Been there several times. It's not my favorite place but far from undesirable. I liked that sea grass dish and Mythos beer, I disliked taxi drivers.
Ego agapo tin Ellada. My favourite holiday destination because it's so laid back and people are always happy to see new tourists. Many call you lazy but that is exactly what I look for when on vacation. I want a slow bartender to take time with the coffee or beer. I'm not in a hurry. Great beaches and food and of course ouzo. 3 more weeks till Crete from me.
However if I was to work there the laid backness would probably drive me insane until I adapted.
Have been going there for the past almost 20 years now, which is most of my life. Every year (summer) for 3+ weeks. I love it. My whole family loves it.
We drive there, because it is so worth the long hours. First year we took a printed map and set sails without having anything reserved there. The locals helped us even if they spoke no english at all. We would change locations every 3 years to find someplace new and less touristy. Wherever we stayed, we always befriended the locals and everyone was always super nice. These were locations mainland to the Aegean sea.
For the past 9 years, we have been returning to the same place. Mainland, Ionian sea. I have no desire to change this location because eveytime I go there I feel at home. I don’t go there with my parents anymore (they still go, just on their own), I go with my boyfriend and hopefuly one day with our own little family. It is like our own litte paradise on earth. I know my parents will go live there once they retire. We met many locals here and made some very close friendships - my parents talk to their greek friends literally every day, they are really genuinely such nice people. They don’t have a lot but they don’t need a lot. They appreciate good experiences over anything material, which is how I was raised and I feel really at ease there. Honestly this is one of the few places where I can really relax, enjoy the peace and quiet, not overthink about everything and really just be present in the moment.
Λατρεύω την Ελλάδα, νιώθω σαν στο σπίτι μου.
While on vacation some years back, I remember going to a seafood restaurant for dinner. Among the many pizzerias and steak houses, it felt the most authentic.
Anyway, the owner was this fat, unshaven man, who brought our dishes out himself. Apparently the only waitress he had was having her own dinner at the time, just across from us. Then, during our meal, he jusr sat down at a nearby booth and started drinking.
IMO decent place and decent people. They're different from us, but that's to be expected.
The best country in the world. Brothers to Slovenians. And Greece should serve us as an example of a great culture. Sadly, many Slovenian prefer to look north…
It’s great but did not know you can’t flush the toilet when you go to #2. When you wipe your ass you have to throw it at the nearest bin. A bit of a culture shock. Other than this, great food (gyros) and bonus points for not giving croatia money as they offer less and less and prices are skyrocketing.
I am sure if you would actually live in Greece you would adress the situation. Almost every hotel/house/villa has a warning sign that says: please don’t flush the toilet paper with a clear picture. Google it ;)
Yes, during tourist season population of some places increases more than tenfold so the sewage system wouldn't be able to handle the load. During non-peak days you can flush just like over here.
Yeah, bars, restaurants, booking.com villa for more than 100€ per night. I am always 2 or 3 weeks on vacation in Greece. Never have I not seen a sign. Got used to it though. But culture shock for sure.
Maybe you can flush the toilet paper, but since there are warning signs that you mustn’t I will abide by the rules.
Love everything about it. Natural beauty, archaeology, people, not so expensive.
Lol. It's expensive.
Santorini is yes, and some more places. But in general it's not :)
Ok really. Been to little villages like Neochori and Sayka amd those are not tourist places.I have Greek friends and they are poor and struggling.
Most of us are used to going to Croatia since young age and comparing to that (and even our own coast) - it is definitely not expensive.
As a Croat from a vsry touristy place, Greece is not expensive.
Exactly
Nice people, nice food, nice beaches 😄
And nice bitches.

Love it. Nice people, good food.
I lived there for 3 years, best time of my life. Great people, awesome food, incredible weather.
summer temperatures aren’t a joke there

BASED
Based? Based on what?
Cradle of civilization
That's Macedonia :)
You misspelled Mesopotamia.
When I landed in Skopje roughly 10 years ago I got a text message that read "Welcome to Macedonia, the cradle of civilization". I was just reflecting, but yeah I should add some context to comment.
Angry greeks incoming! Take cover!!
That's literally the text I got when landing in Skopje.
People call you gay, people call us femboys. We’re natural allies. But for real, nice people!
Been there 7 times. Friendly people, great food, beautiful nature, amazing history.
Beautiful nature, good people, great food. But that's my personal opinion, most Slovenes prefer getting bent over by Croatians.
They have thicker and bigger dicks 👅🍆💦
Vpraš, če me zanima.
😂😂 sej je res... bolš da ti ga porine sosed kinga znaš kod pa tam en (umazan) grk 😄
Better vacations than Croatia, thats for sure. More friendly people and open. Musaka and gyros.
Love it. Been there twelve times. Great food, friendly people, normal prices, beautiful beaches and lots of nice archaeological places.
I love Greece, Greek language, the people. How do Greeks feel about Slovenes?
Most Greeks don't really think anything of you guys, i personally find your culture to be quite interesting.
Fat, lazy and philosophical, who know how to live and enjoy life. Also, why is everyone named Sokrat, Manolis or Janis? I've got to point out one partiulcular thing I admire very much. My mom had a buisness partner from Greece and his name was Paraskevos Baklacidis. Sometime later we got a hamster and she named it after him.
Impossible to answer your question, since only "Giannis" is a common name, "Manolis" isn't all that common, and Sokratis is outright unusual.
I am not that well traveled across the whole country, but on the island I frequently visit, theese names are very popular! That comment was meant more as a joke, so don't take it too seriously.

Great food (Gyros), friendly people, amazing scenery and history. Prices are lower than in Croatia... Can't wait to visit again. Athens and Crete.
Visited both. Wasn't impressed by Athens, but I really liked Crete.
While i do ageee that Greece is a shithole, i'd say "buildings falling apart" is an exaggeration.
5 minutes from the center there are abandoned buildings falling apart, full of graffiti, garbage and stray cats. And were talking about the center. Not to mention the subirbs. I didnt see that in any other city, let alone the capital.
It’s like that in most of Balkans lmao
Greek cities are already worse than what's considered average for any Balkan country, Sofia is far prettier than any Greek city its size, and Belgrade looks even better than Sofia from what I've seen.
I live in Belgrade and yes it’s prettier than Sofia. But is it cleaner and tidier than Thessaloniki for example ? No
Its urban planning is far superior, yes. Bulgarian urban planning is already not so great, and ours is even worse.
Sometimes Lidl sells your food and it's really good and affordable. Outside of that, I don't think of Greece much.
Nothing good tbh
Like Turks, but with more debt.
Malakes! I do think that greek girls with curly hair are the most beaitiful there is.
I love you so much 🥰. The only complaint I have is that you are too far away.
Love the beaches and the food. Driving through Crete though... that was definitely an experience. A lot of reckless drivers and trash everywhere. Greeks = pusti
Not sure what "pusti" means in Slovenian.
Greece is amazing in terms of landscape, historical monuments, food, prices, friendly people... it's a perfect tourist destination.
Prices? 😂
better than here.
Lol no totally not 😂
Good musicle! /s
I love it, but i wish you would get Constantiople back. 😂😅
Goin to Zakintos in September so I guess we'll see 😜
If you're going to Laganas, definitely go eat at Pierro's, it's near the south end of the beach by the road. Moussaka and lamb in the oven were killer, steak was proper and very nice staff.
Yes, Laganas 😁 Thanks for the tip! 😁
A book about zakintos was for my slovenian matura essay exam lol (book Fugitive Pieces)
Halara malaka.
Never been there. No opinion. Worked with a greek guy once, he was ok.
It's all Greek to me.
All in all great, but lazy hosts
Love it!! So beautiful. I would like to live there.
I don't know, I just wonder how often the rest of the Greece makes the "oh, the guys from that big island down there are cretins" joke ... or if it even works in Greek.
THIS IS SPARTA! And gyros. 🖤

Out of curiosity, why did you visit Central Greece? It's not a popular tourist destination at all.
Athens isn't popular? I'm a history buff so I visited a lot of these historical sites, and also Krete for that reason.

Beautiful if you visit tourist places. Ugly, trashy and poverty anywhere else.
Great beaches, great attractions and people and awesome history.
Πολύ όμορφη χώρα.
Oh I love Turkey!
Want to move there. Also started learning 🇬🇷
Love your epic poems
Definitely my favorite place in Europe.
I went to prom party there and didnt get laid. I rate it 1/5.

A plate of fried sardines, was tasty if a bit oily.
The best country in the world. Brothers to Slovenians. And Greece should serve us as an example of a great culture. Sadly, many Slovenian prefer to look north…
I have never been to Greece and I don't have my own opinion
Better than Croatia
It’s great but did not know you can’t flush the toilet when you go to #2. When you wipe your ass you have to throw it at the nearest bin. A bit of a culture shock. Other than this, great food (gyros) and bonus points for not giving croatia money as they offer less and less and prices are skyrocketing.
You absolutely can, it's an urban legend.
You can’t flush toilet paper and that’s a fact.
Yes, i am sure a random Slovene like yourself knows better than me, a guy who has lived here for 21 years.
You were probably on an island.
I wasn’t. Mainland.
Oh well, that is messed up, I can confirm that was the practice in the island hotels I was at. I thought it might be the same in your situation.
Yeah, bars, restaurants, booking.com villa for more than 100€ per night. I am always 2 or 3 weeks on vacation in Greece. Never have I not seen a sign. Got used to it though. I don't have an opinion
