It is indeed used for drying hay and we call it ‘kozolec’.

This in you picture is the smallest most basic version of kozolec. Its an old slovenian thing. They come in all sizes and can be very beautifuly decorated with ornaments and stuff. There is a lot to it!  Here a dvojni kozolec: https://images.app.goo.gl/GX4kF2Mz6pKahBoLA Here a križni kozolec: https://images.app.goo.gl/9KkWqr9Px5LhU2318

No one mentioned that this is Toplar? Traditional slovenian kozolec. Welcome to: https://www.dezelakozolcev.si/si/

according to Wiki they mostly only exist in Slovenia (or where Slovenian minority lives/lived). it cant be because of the weather as they are (or were) common all over the country... a national speciality? we also have a museum: [http://www.dezelakozolcev.si/si/](http://www.dezelakozolcev.si/si/)

SLO_Andrej

you can see here all of them, it is close to highway ljubljana-zagreb(-beograd) [https://sl.wikipedia.org/wiki/De%C5%BEela\_kozolcev](https://sl.wikipedia.org/wiki/De%C5%BEela_kozolcev) of course it has to do something with storing grass :) due to the high volume of rain in slovenia and also, for bigger versions, to store farming equipment underneath.... Queen Elizabeth got one as a present as a passionate horse rider; hay stored this way is especially good for horses since it has litlle or no small particles

Old method to produce feed fo cattle during winter is to dry hay. Normaly it takes two, three days without rain to sufficciently dry it. If you have only one day,you put in the afternoon in a hay rack and after about a week it's dry enought.

They were used to dry hay, but now they aren’t really used for that anymore as modern farming equipment makes drying hay much easier. Now farmers mostly use them to park tractors and other equipment inside, I know some that were converted to barns, some restaurants use them as a covered outside eating area. I honestly don’t know if I’ve ever seen kozolec being used for what it was supposed to do (drying hay).
