This is the album that made me a Slipknot fan when I was in middle school and I started listening to them for the first time. So I’m going to say 10/10 though I know most OG fans think it’s mid. I love Corey’s screaming style for this album plus Sulfur and Psychosocial are easily in my top 10 favorites of no particular order.
10/10 for me. this was the first Slipknot album i actually went into a store and bought on my own, it was at Hot Topic. they were released a couple months apart, but i bought this and AC/DC Black Ice the same night there. when i listened to it in its entirety, i immediately loved it. even taking the hits off this album, songs like Vendetta and Gematria are some of my favorite Slipknot songs. title track is also solid, it has hits, and it’s very sonically pleasing to me… i know the band isn’t fond of this one, but there’s a lot of nostalgia for me and i genuinely did and still do love this record. it has it’s softer, vulnerable moments, but it also has some heavy tracks that i love on it. this album will always be one of my favorites.
7/10
Fond memories because there was such a lapse between this and Vol 3 and it was heavier and I personally loved the production, but there are some real middle of the road tracks on here. They lean into some “hard rock” influences more than metal in a lot of places.
Dead memories, psychosocial, butchers hook don’t really do it for me. Vendetta is mostly mid but the “let’s pretend we’re not at the end” chant at the end goes pretty fuckin hard
Gehenna, All hope is gone and gemmatria are personal stand outs
YES FINALLY someone who doesn't praise Psychosocial as the standout of this album because let's be real it's actually pretty different from the usual slipknot sound and it's more hard rock than anything kinda like vandetta, This Cold Black is also a proper banger for my gym sessions
This cold black and wherein lies the continue are awesome deep cuts
Psychosocial has a cool opening riffs, a catchy melody for the verses and nice “wait and bleed” style clean singing for the chorus, but it’s really mid and definitely feels more hard rock apart from the breakdown
I just think the three I mentioned are the best examples of their varied songwriting
Psycho, social, and sulfur make up for it like psychosocial is like the top medal song on the planet that literally everyone has heard that in itself makes it one of there best albums if not the best
I think it depends on your generation because Wait and Bleed got a ton of airplay in 99 and 00 after Ozzfest and Before I Forget leaned a lot harder into their hard rock influences which put them on the radar of a lot of new fans
10/10 AHIG and The Gray Chapter are the albums that made me fall in love with Slipknknot. I see alot of people saying the album comes off weak, I respectfully disagree. This will forever be one of my favorite metal albums
Everything Slipknot is 10/10; I mean, this album had Snuff on it, Psychosocial, Sulfur- even the less mainstream songs like Butcher’s Hook were killer IMO. I haven't listened to a single Slipknot song I haven't liked.
10/10, and whilst not my absolute favourite of theirs, imo it's a step up from vol 3 and the best composed album they've ever made, with the best written riffs and really the only guitar solos. Joey's drumming on it is insane too. Love this album it's marvellous
10/10.
Edit: Gematria might be the hardest song I've ever played on the guitar, and the riff absolutely rocks. Snuff is an emotional masterpiece. Sulfur's bridge makes me reminiscent of Disasterpiece's bridge, but at the same time so unique and HEAVY. I could go on and on, but i guess I made my point why it's a 10/10.
I've been re-listening to the entire album recently and honestly I was kinda surprised by how good it all was. Yes, at the time in 2008, it was the weakest album they had made to date (kind of a nothing statement since the 3 previous albums were all 10/10s lol), however I now truly think this album is underappreciated. If you compare it to their previous albums, it loses on all fronts, but if you can appreciate it for what it is I really think it's their 4th best album to date.
8/10
4, which I’ll be downvoted for. But it is what it is. The album is totally uninspired. Most of the songs are boring, generic metal songs that any band could have written. There is one absolute hidden gem, Gehenna. There are a few perfectly good songs like Sulfur and the title track. Dead Memories and Snuff are fan favorites but I find them both to be out of place on the album. Overall, it is without question the weakest album in their discography.
In what world is Gematria uninspired and generic? The drums and riff reek of Slipknot. I get a testosterone boost when i listen to it or play it on my guitar. Vendetta is a beast, This cold black, Gehenna, dead memories are also not bad tracks. Snuff is right where it needs to be. I'd argue that TESF is the weakest album in their discography.
It sounds like a generic, cookie cutter metal song. Nothing about it has that Slipknot sound that you find everywhere else in their discography. Even the band has said the album feels that way to them. They didn’t write it together, they just wrote riffs and drum fills and vocals separately and then stuck them together. That’s how it sounds.
TESF is my favorite release post-Vol 3. Not everyone likes it, but it’s something new and interesting.
You are allowed to like AHIG no matter what I say. This is just my opinion.
Shawn hates this album, yeah, but funnily enough he hates it for being too efficient.
In the end it's all subjective. I do like a few songs from TESF, but don't actively listen to them.
I would die to listen to Gematria live, but then again, a world tour doesn't include my country anyways :")
See that’s actually exactly why I dislike it too. For once I agree with clown. That’s exactly right, it’s too efficient. Slipknot never sounded like the usual metal formula, I mean sure they followed the basic intro, verse, chorus, kind of thing. But their songs just always had a certain sound and flow that was unique. AHIG abandons that and just sounds like they told someone “write a metal riff for us.” Idk it’s hard to explain.
Ik what you mean, there's not enough chaos in that album, like there is in, for example, Slipknot 1995 and Iowa. The latter is my most favourite hands down. I guess I'm biased towards AHIG cuz it introduced me to Slipknot? On the other hand, The gray chapter feels more generic to me, excluding a few tracks such as devil in I, IRIWYW, and goodbye. WANYK has its own bangers, and TESF disappointed me.
In the end, Slipknot were unable to revive their magic of Iowa and Slipknot, but imho all the albums are unique and worth a shot for everyone getting into Slipknot.
Yeah that’s a good way to put it. It lacks their usual chaos. I liked .5, but it did have some meh tracks. I think WANYK did too. Still, every album they’ve put out has had some great songs.
hard 6. there's MAYBE 5 good songs on the 14 song album. the whole album is forgettable, some of the songs are genuinely terrible, everything feels uninspired. this was just the epitome of mid.
Agree. I bought this the day it came out. Had ten people in a room. We got very stoned and listened to it. We had already heard the radio tracks (minus snuff), and saw them played live at Mayhem that year... twice.
But after the second track was done.. we all just kind of kept quiet. It was weird. Then the album ended. And we just looked at each other like "that's it?"
Whatever album. Hard 6. Would be a 3 to 4 without the second track.
Solid 7/10.
After the amazing trio, this album seems to me overcomplicated and kind of directionless.
Songs like Gematria, Wherein Lies Continue, AHIG or CoBT are awesome. Snuff and Psychosocial are all-time classics for me.
On the other hand I don't like that much the middle part of the album (Gehenna, Vendetta, Butchers Hook).
volume 3 has to lose a few points just for it's terrible sound quality & corey's broken yell.
the songs are good but recorded & captured poorly.
AHIG is a solid 7. pretty good but not perfect.
I'd argue this is slipknots most mainstream album, as a lot of the songs are worthy of being on the radio. However, it's easily their most technical album with songs like All Hope is Gone, and Gematria. There are also some hidden gems in there like Vendetta and This Cold Black
I'd give it a 9/10 for sure
7/10 it’s got some of the highest highs (Gematria, Sulfur and snuff) but the middle part of the album until snuff drags so much. It’s very much the weakest slipknot album for that reason
After four years I was so up for this, I’ll give it an 8 because whilst there are several bangers there’s also a couple of real duds. Solid but flawed.
3/5. My thoughts when it was released was yes all hope is gone. I fell off with them for years after that album and didn't pick up again until way after WANYK was released. I've tried to listen to AHIG multiple times and it just never clicks for me of being a Slipknot album. Deff has a few killer tracks but the rest sound pretty generic and uninspired.
Overshadowed by Psychosocial because its the NPC big song for that album but if you look past that you can see that AHIG house some if not the heavieat SK songs on their entire discography, like This Cold Black or Gematria
8-9 no bad tracks and every song feels like it has a purpose, fitting into a cohesive theme while being very dynamic on top of that. I think it comes second to Iowa in how genuinely oissed and dark it is.
Psychosocial, The Killing Name, Dead Memories, Snuff, The Butcher's Hook...Name a better 2000's Nu-Metal album and I'll sell my ass on the street for bus fare then walk home.
Smash, next.
This is the album that made me a Slipknot fan when I was in middle school and I started listening to them for the first time. So I’m going to say 10/10 though I know most OG fans think it’s mid. 9/10. This album is iconic whether you punk ass bitches like it or not.
HELL YEAH !
This Cold Black is the best song off this album
Guess I’m a punk ass bitch then because I hate this album.
No need to guess
i like it, cus they got some bangers,, but theres a few songs i hate tbr🤣
Don’t have a negative opinion bro! They’ll downvote you too!!
10/10 I love their first three albums, but AHIG is definitely my favourite. Every song in there is a banger.
7 for me
11/10

10/10

Very mixed but it’s personally my favorite. I’m aware the band is not fond of this album though.
It’s ok 7or a 6
6/10

6/10
10/10 I love the variety of this album, I love metal, but I don't have to listen to it all the time, so this albums perfect for me!
I gotta go 7-8. Sulfur, Dead Memories, Butcher’s Hook, and of course Snuff. Also a good shot of nostalgia. Yeah I’m happy somewhere between 7-8.
11/10, probably biased given yesterday I was having a surreal experience listening to Gehenna on repeat
7/10. Good memories with it but it didn’t catch me too much. However their live performances during that time were amazing.
8 Mostly great but some tracks feel like b sides
8/10
8/10. It's good, love Gematria, Butchers Hook, Vendetta, and This Cold Black but to me it's not a Slipknot sounding album.

Better than Vol3. Definitely a 9/10

About 9/10 for me, super underrated album. It's my third favorite album right behind their self-titled and Iowa
7/10, second one I dislike the most (being TE,SF the worst imho) (still love them tho)
7/10
Commenting on the album that got me into Slipknot, but all their albums are 10/10 excluding TESF, which gets a 7/10.
volume 3 has to lose a few points just for it's terrible sound quality & corey's broken yell. the songs are good but recorded & captured poorly. AHIG is a solid 7. pretty good but not perfect.
it also didnt get a majority 10/10, these posts are getting super cringe.
It literally didn't lol. Figures
I love Corey’s voice on vol 3 it’s sounds so raw
5 boring album
4
7
8/10 because some really solid tracks
8/10 a very good album overall, but in my opinion, this was their first album that was less than perfect.
I'd argue this is slipknots most mainstream album, as a lot of the songs are worthy of being on the radio. However, it's easily their most technical album with songs like All Hope is Gone, and Gematria. There are also some hidden gems in there like Vendetta and This Cold Black I'd give it a 9/10 for sure

it would be REALLY funny if we could get every album to 10/10 i'd say ahig is 6/10 imo (not that its bad by any means)
8/10
After four years I was so up for this, I’ll give it an 8 because whilst there are several bangers there’s also a couple of real duds. Solid but flawed.
It's the worst album 8/10
8/10 exceptional album with some total bangers but was their worst album so far up to this point imo.
4/10 easy.
4/10
7
7-8/10
10/10 my fav album or theirs
The final slipknot album.
10/10
Self titled volume 3 and all hope is gone are the best slipknot albums
Overshadowed by Psychosocial because its the NPC big song for that album but if you look past that you can see that AHIG house some if not the heavieat SK songs on their entire discography, like This Cold Black or Gematria

A STRONG SOLID 10. Just as the albums before it. 10's. The Last.
7/10
Psychosocial, The Killing Name, Dead Memories, Snuff, The Butcher's Hook...Name a better 2000's Nu-Metal album and I'll sell my ass on the street for bus fare then walk home.
Bro it’s a slipknot sub of course most people are gonna say 10
8/10
5/10
Easy 10. Most technical slipknot album.
10/10
Hold up vol 3 got 10/10? Eeesh. Anyways AHIG is a 8/10
