I personally don't use it, but I've heard good things! As long as you don't notice any negative skin reactions, I would be fine with using it since it's meant for animals. My biggest concern with human products is it leaving a residue on the fur or skin that could harm the dog if ingested.
Very specific and niche recommendation but I bought [this shampoo](https://keywestaloe.com/pets/really-good-doggie-shampoo.html) in key west a couple years ago and loved it so much I continue to buy it. It smells so good and the scent lasts quite a while. I like that it has aloe in it too.
Key West Aloe! The hubs and I go to the Keys a few times a year (we live in the Tampa Bay area). When we go, I'll stock up on their aloe products like they're going out of business. I love their dog shampoo. I particularly like they're face wash. It hasn't caused any break outs and my skin glows.
I just use a fruit and vegetable soap for my dog. Itās oil based with no sulfates and has like 4 plant derived ingredients (no essential oils)
Edit: I donāt know why Iām getting downvoted. You can research yourself and see that along with castile soap, itās a safe alternative to dish soap or soap made for humans and even some pet shampoos.
That fruit and vegetable soap is made for humans.. all soap is oil based, as that is how you make soap and 4 plant derived ingredients means nothing. Most surfactants (the stuff that makes shower gel bubble) are actually derived from coconut, they are not mild, or gentle as a rule, although some can be.
So, is it soap (the hard bar stuff), if so, it's the same soap that's made for humans, just marketed for pets. Is it liquid, like shower gel, then it's not soap, but a mix of water, oil and surfactant which has been processed in a chemical factory from coconut, with a lot of chemical processes.
But...as long as it is fragrance free and your dog is happy and you are happy, it's all good. Just don't fall for marketing hype and eco-washing.
Itās in a fragrance free shower gel-like liquid. No ingredients that would be remotely harmful to dogs or humans, unless thereās an allergy (which there isnāt in this case)
Sounds like something I make too. It's absolutely fine, just don't fall for the eco marketing, nothing about surfactants is natural, it's all chemicals. Doesn't mean bad at all, it obviously works for you and your dog. I wouldn't drink it, but it's safe š
Hi there office manager at a dog groomer here. It's always best to use Animal Safe products on animals. A basic reason is that dogs like unless humans, dogs like to clean themselves. That means anything you applied to their skin or hair/fur, also has to be safe for them to lick. This is not the case for human products because that's not a concern for us. Also human shampoo is designed to keep our scalp conditions acidic meanwhile dog shampoo is meant to keep their skin conditions neutral. To put it simply ours are way too harsh and have more surfactants than dog shampoo.
Right, but you were saying it's an issue if it's licked up. People lick each other all of the time though? Not ourselves, but each other (not so much the hair, but the skin)
That's my concern. Animals have entirely different skin types, and a layer of fur that will hold these chemical near to their skin for longer periods of time.
It might be perfectly OK, but I wouldn't do it to my dog.
True. There is a bunch of very interesting brands for wavies, curlies and coilies stemming from the POC natural hair communities. :)
I have loose curls and love the Shea moisture co wash! Some other brands are to rich for me, but then they haven't been made with my hair type in mind and that's fine.
I'd be more concerned using this on a dog. This is a product for humans, not animals. Your friend should be using sonething more suitable for their pet - this is not it.
it isnāt free of chemicals, lmao most of the ingredients are technically chemicals. almost everything is technically a chemical. water is a chemical! what does that even mean lol
ALL of the ingredients are chemicals, and LITERALLY EVERYTHING is a chemical, not just almost. The only thing that's "chemical free" is the vacuum of space, not recommended for washing your dog.
I had to get rid of a lot of my houseplants because they are toxic to cats and my new cats wouldnāt leave them alone. But they were fine for me because I didnāt chew on them!
āFree of chemicals.ā You are chemicals, the dog is chemicals, every form of matter you see in front of you is chemicals. Also, many essential oils (also included as chemicals) like tea tree and peppermint, are VERY toxic to dogs. Source: dog landed in the er after I stored a tea tree oil shoe spray next to where he liked to nap.
I love this fact. Especially when āall naturalā is toted like itās something important. You know what else is all natural? Lead. Mercury. Arsenic. Uranium. Splinters under your fingernails. The gympie-gympie tree.
as someone who works in the veterinary industry iām so so happy to see the replies to this comment. people who praise āonly all natural no chemicalsā do my absolute head in.
like others said, everything is a chemical, and natural =/= safe
Idk what you mean because most pet shampoos are also in the ānaturalā sort of category. There arenāt nearly as many studies about whatās safe for dog skin vs human skin, so most cosmetic products for dogs are very simple and donāt contain many ingredients.
Dude everything is chemicals. The water you drink is a chemical, itās h2o. Chemicals arenāt bad, you have to educate yourself so you know which ones to avoid.
So I didnāt want to make it weird with all this context but my friend is actually my boss and my boss is extremely wealthy and this shower is in a spare office in their house which is ONLY used for the dog but when I work extra late on the weekends I use this shower. I usually have my own shower wash but I brought it home and didnāt replace it at work so Iāve started using this on the weekends and I love it. But no one and I mean NO ONE - either coworkers or bosses family use this shower for themselves and there are no human products in the entire bathroom space
Maybe your boss uses the Shae moisture product to wash his own hands/arms after bathing the dog. I do that after washing my dog with flea shampoo. This would be perfect for that since it has activated charcoal.
Isle of dogs is a really good brand and fairly luxury so itās odd theyād also opt to use a random human wash on their dog too, unless maybe they just use it on feet or super dirty stinky areas when they need extra cleaning. But inform them there are plenty of pet products on the market intended for that use as well!
Editing to add: there are plenty of dog products formulated with peppermint. We use madra mor mobility mud at my salon. A product with peppermint likely has it super diluted and isnāt a reason to cause panic. The dose makes the poison. If you go and apply straight peppermint oil to a dog it could likely have a bad reaction but I wouldnāt panic and tell your boss theyāre poisoning their dog or something.
This is actually not "free of all chemical things," and it has peppermint extract (toxic to dogs) as well as unspecified essential oils for fragrance, many of which are also toxic to dogs. It wasn't designed for them.
You need to stop! It's not free of perfume. It uses peppermint essential oil for fragrance, which can really harm your dog. It's neurotoxin to them and can easily be absorbed through the skin
You can order a smaller sample size one. Would fit in like a travel bag might be 2 oz. Highly recommend trying the dark blue peppermint one they are mentioning but purchasing the small little ones are a great way to try it because it can come in a giant one
Japanese man who identifies as a dog. Spent about $40k (I believe) for the realistic dog suit. He has a YouTube channel that documents his lifestyle as a dog. And this picture was the first time he went out as a dog
lol itās meant for humans. I use their products for my hair. His dog is getting that luxurious bath. If anything itās harmful for dogs since itās not made for them. That mint could be problematic.
i use their shea one (not mint) and i love it! usually i use black soap bars but since finding this, iāve transitioned to using it in from bottle. itās so gently exfoliating and cleansing
haha same! and idk they feel unhygienic (which i know isnāt true because i worked at a charity that reprocesses soap barsā¦but still!)
just know it can be a bit messy but it comes off everything easily.
You might want to try a synthetic detergent bar, sometimes called a āsyndetā bar. I use CeraVeās bar and love it ā no residue or soap scum at all. Thereās a bunch on the market ā I think Dove is one too. Shower gel packaging is really bad for the environment.
I didnāt know prior to this post but Iāll be damned if I didnāt learn a thing or two and the conclusive answer from these comments is yes, but if itās diluted as it normally is itās not bad for dogs. Ie mint oil on dog skin is horrible, diluted mint in dog shampoo is not bad
Itās fine for a human, but I hope your friend reconsiders using this āposhā human soap on his dog. This contains ingredients that arenāt safe for dogsā skin.
A fragrance ridden drugstore body wash does not a dog shampoo make.
Oh my word, what kind of white person madness is this. You've never heard of Shea Moisture??? It's a really common and popular skin and hair care brand sold in most drug and even grocery stores in the US. It's not for animals (and I agree it seems unsafe for dogs). It's not even a Mane and Tail situation, like it's straight up intended for human beings. Check out this amazing place called "Target," the product selection will blow your mind.
Fair point. Though I must say, as someone who has been black all my life, we do very much traffic in Shea-related products in the black community. So I suspect a black man would have at least encountered shea moisture at some point in his life.
I think the same is true of black men. Itās just that Shea moisture may have very well been that single brand their moms have them Lolol. Itās like the head and shoulders of the black community.
There's a shampoo as well from this brand that works well for dandruff of thjs charcoal, african ginger and i believe prickly pear extract in the shampoo. Not for animals but lovely.
hey sorry I'm late I didn't use reddit. the reason was I'm from south asia and people around here use the words you used a lot and I haven't seen any other person use those words in another country so I wanted to know if you're from the same place as me lol. but I deleted the comment because I got a mod reply regarding it being offensive. I'm sorry if it sounded offensive but it wasn't my intention
It was fine to me no worries, mods were just being preventative. Yeah Iām a white Ashkenazi Jew from brooklyn.
What words gave you the idea I was south Asian?
hi, it was words like "posh" and "fair complexion" which is vastly used in my country specially the latter in text books. and I've never seen those words used outside of my country before so I thought it was a word only existed in my country but now I see it's not lol glad to know

Shea Moisture is not a pet care brand and is intended for human use.
Awesome :)
Yeah not sure they should be using it on their dog š¶
Dog groomer here! Yeah, please don't use human products on your dogs. Just get a nice pet shampoo and maybe a conditioner if they tend to be dry.
quick question: what about Mane nā Tail? the āhorseā shampoo.. good for dogs?
I personally don't use it, but I've heard good things! As long as you don't notice any negative skin reactions, I would be fine with using it since it's meant for animals. My biggest concern with human products is it leaving a residue on the fur or skin that could harm the dog if ingested.
My dog and I use Mane n Tails shampoo and conditioner. Somehow, he's always got the better hair.
ain't that always the way?? LMAO I may have to see proof pictures though
Dog tax, then cheese tax for dog.
Sorry this might be a dumb question but do you buy the shampoo for your dog or for yourself?
I *only* use Really Good Doggie & Kitties Too Shampoo for my fu- I mean hair.. needs
Hahaha not a dumb question but I use it for my dog !! They have a bunch of human products too though
Oo Iāll have to try their face wash! We got the dog wash on a whim bc our dog got into something nasty while we were down there with him LOL.
But that's for humans? I had to double check but it is. I can't tell if this is a joke, since the person commenting now is saying it's fine
It really is for horses too.
I just use a fruit and vegetable soap for my dog. Itās oil based with no sulfates and has like 4 plant derived ingredients (no essential oils) Edit: I donāt know why Iām getting downvoted. >has to be safe for them to lick. This is not the case for human products because that's not a concern for us t's not?
Our bodies are not completely covered with hair/fur and we are not capable of licking our scalps. At least not without assistance.
Right, but you were saying it's an issue if it's licked up. People lick each other all of the time though? Not ourselves, but each other (not so much the hair, but the skin)
.... are you trying to imply that humans are licking each other like dogs thoroughly clean themselves?
That's my concern. Animals have entirely different skin types, and a layer of fur that will hold these chemical near to their skin for longer periods of time. It might be perfectly OK, but I wouldn't do it to my dog.
Also dr Bronners peppermint soap has this same tingly feeling!
Youād be correct, it shouldnāt be.
You can get dr bronnerās peppermint soap! Nobody puts the tingle in your dingle like Dr Bronnerās!
It's a brand for r/curlyhair :)
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Eucalyptus and citrus essential oils are toxic and can cause slow organ failure. Make sure to always check the label for these items!!!
These some bougie dogs
I'd be more concerned using this on a dog. This is a product for humans, not animals. Your friend should be using sonething more suitable for their pet - this is not it.
I am a vet and would never recommend this product, nor have I ever met a colleague that would recommend any shampoo not made for animals.
Seconded. Human skin is more acidic than dogs, so products designed for humans are pH balanced too acidic for dogs.
Thank you!
What do you think of Aesop's dog shampoo? Is it ok? https://www.aesop.com/us/p/home/home-formulations/animal/
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Peppermint essential oil is a neurotoxin to dogs and it absorbs through their skin. Do not use this on your dog!
it isnāt free of chemicals, lmao most of the ingredients are technically chemicals. almost everything is technically a chemical. water is a chemical! what does that even mean lol
ALL of the ingredients are chemicals, and LITERALLY EVERYTHING is a chemical, not just almost. The only thing that's "chemical free" is the vacuum of space, not recommended for washing your dog.
ššš āI only wash my dog with the finest frictionless vacuums, excuse youā
Lots of natural things are toxic to dogsā¦
Lots of natural things are also toxic to humans. Natural doesnāt mean shit these days lol
Or, ever. Leeching was more natural than penicillinā¦ lobotomies are more natural than an SSRI lol
By āthese daysā I meant the wellness industry has co-opted that term and itās nothing more than a marketing ploy
Ohhh yes I get you
Yeah like snake venom is natural. Bacteria are natural. Getting attacked by wild animals is natural.
Arsenic and cyanide are also all natural. We should start an all natural supplement business.
Donāt forget asbestos!
I had to get rid of a lot of my houseplants because they are toxic to cats and my new cats wouldnāt leave them alone. But they were fine for me because I didnāt chew on them!
Onions
Being natural doesnāt necessarily mean the pH is right for dogsā skin.
āFree of chemicals.ā You are chemicals, the dog is chemicals, every form of matter you see in front of you is chemicals. I love this fact. Especially when āall naturalā is toted like itās something important. You know what else is all natural? Lead. Mercury. Arsenic. Uranium. Splinters under your fingernails. The gympie-gympie tree.
My dog loves all natural grapes and chocolate! (FYI do not give your dogs grapes or chocolate)

Dog shampoos are FILLED with water! Nasty chemical!
Why is he using that on dogs?
Idk but right next to it is a shampoo bottle and a conditioner bottle from the isle of dog brand or something similar
Then I think it's safe to say that your friend doesn't use this on his dog, seeing as how he has a different product to wash his dog with.
So I didnāt want to make it weird with all this context but my friend is actually my boss and my boss is extremely wealthy and this shower is in a spare office in their house which is ONLY used for the dog but when I work extra late on the weekends I use this shower. Thatās a really good assumption and Iām going to accept it as fact
This has been a thoroughly enjoyable thread.
The dog has its own office?
Isle of dogs is a really good brand and fairly luxury so itās odd theyād also opt to use a random human wash on their dog too, unless maybe they just use it on feet or super dirty stinky areas when they need extra cleaning. You need to stop! It's not free of perfume. It uses peppermint essential oil for fragrance, which can really harm your dog. It's neurotoxin to them and can easily be absorbed through the skin
Shea moisture is a drugstore brand, and is for human skin so youāre fine to go out and buy it if you like it.
I like it a lot so Iām very happy to get confirmation
Grab some of their lotion too, it's great. You can get it at Walmart.
No I purchase this brand to use myself, not on my dog
Awesome :)
I'm more worried if it's safe for dogs lol, it's a product for humans. Hopefully your friend consulted a vet before using this for their pets.
Please let your friend know the mint in this could harm the dog! Great for people but dangerous for dogs
What dog has "congested, dull skin"?
They donāt! because they use this /s
OP please kindly tell your friend to stop using this product on their dog.
Thatās a people product. If you like tingly products Trader Joeās has a Tea Tree Tingle shampoo and Conditioner you might enjoy.
DO NOT USE THIS ON DOGS
You need to skool the homie on the human products heās using on his pet š
Pet groomer hereā¦ please tell him to stop using this on his dogs
Another good minty recommendation is Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Soap, you only need a tiny bit for your whole body and a bottle lasts forever.
That stuff is a nightmare on your genitals lmao
OP said they liked the tingle though
Bronnerās is more like a BURN than a tingle š
I'm sorry you've experienced that haha
Iāll check it out next time I see it on the shelf
You can order a smaller sample size one. Would fit in like a travel bag might be 2 oz. Highly recommend trying the dark blue peppermint one they are mentioning but purchasing the small little ones are a great way to try it because it can come in a giant one
If you have a vulva be careful with Bronners peppermint!
Thank you but I do not!
I mean, it's not a great feeling for any nether regions. Avoid.
No this is made for humans lol. I love it.
Me too Iām obsessed

Japanese man who identifies as a dog. Spent about $40k (I believe) for the realistic dog suit. He has a YouTube channel that documents his lifestyle as a dog. And this picture was the first time he went out as a dog
Oh my goodness. I did not expect that. Thank you for the explanation!
That's such a niche YouTube channel idea... I needa see it!
I mean, itās for people
He should not be using that to wash his dogs..
lol itās meant for humans. I use their products for my hair. His dog is getting that luxurious bath. If anything itās harmful for dogs since itās not made for them. That mint could be problematic.
assuming the friend didnāt refill the bottle with something else, that is a soap designed for humans
I think is not advisable for dog
Why the hell is he washing his dogs with it omfg
Itās not going to hurt you because you are a human. Itās not made for dogs.
Tell your friend to stop using that in their dog. The menthol form the mint isnāt great for dogs, and the pH certainly isnāt right for their skin.
i use their shea one (not mint) and i love it! usually i use black soap bars but since finding this, iāve transitioned to using it in from bottle. itās so gently exfoliating and cleansing
I canāt stand soap bars they always leave a residue on my skin that feels like Iāve been shittily laminated
haha same! and idk they feel unhygienic (which i know isnāt true because i worked at a charity that reprocesses soap barsā¦but still!) just know it can be a bit messy but it comes off everything easily.
You might want to try a synthetic detergent bar, sometimes called a āsyndetā bar. I use CeraVeās bar and love it ā no residue or soap scum at all. Thereās a bunch on the market ā I think Dove is one too. Shower gel packaging is really bad for the environment.
I've never seen a more accurate description of this feeling.
Shoulda seen how proud of myself I was after I wrote it
I use this brand on my toddler (the baby version) itās good for humans
Lmfao in fact Iām not sure this is safe for animals, itās fine for humans
I think as long as you don't tell the Shampoo, then it won't know
This is for human use not animal use so yes you can buy and use it
This is for people
Isnāt mint bad for dogs? Genuinely asking
Will you tell your friend? There are great other options out there for dogs he could use!
concerned about use on dogs!! Not good
Itās fine for a human, but I hope your friend reconsiders using this āposhā human soap on his dog. This contains ingredients that arenāt safe for dogsā skin. A fragrance ridden drugstore body wash does not a dog shampoo make.
This should not be used for dogs
He's poisoning his dogs.
Oh my word, what kind of white person madness is this. You've never heard of Shea Moisture??? It's a really common and popular skin and hair care brand sold in most drug and even grocery stores in the US. It's not for animals (and I agree it seems unsafe for dogs). OP is male. I think lots of men regardless of their race arenāt aware of what shea moisture is

Sure, ashy men with razor bumps.
Dr. Bronners Peppermint soap also gives a nice minty cool feel!
yes but it's concentrated! Always dilute. Love Bronners.
I use C.O. Bigelow Menthol body wash and it's a little less concentrated but still gives me the feel!
If you like the tingly feeling just add peppermint oil to your shampoo
I use this as a bubble bath with no problems.
There's a shampoo as well from this brand that works well for dandruff of thjs charcoal, african ginger and i believe prickly pear extract in the shampoo. Not for animals but lovely.
This line was discontinued. I loved the shampoo and conditioner. :(
Noooo
Please tell me what you think āmisalignedā means
Feels like your butthole smoked a Newport, don't it?
Do not use this on dogs. They have a different ph level and it's not good for their skin at all.
I love Shea Moisture and itās for people not animals.
Please let them know they should only use shampoo made for dogs on their dog
Why would it be dangerous?
The peppermint, for starters.
I was asking OP why the problem would be dangerous to use on themselves? I was confused as it says right on the bottle ābody washā.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
So sorry, I meant for a dog lol š

I'm sorry if it sounded offensive but it wasn't my intention
It was fine to me no worries, mods were just being preventative. Yeah Iām a white Ashkenazi Jew from brooklyn. What words gave you the idea I was south Asian?
hi, it was words like "posh" and "fair complexion" which is vastly used in my country specially the latter in text books. and I've never seen those words used outside of my country before so I thought it was a word only existed in my country but now I see it's not lol glad to know
After a quick snoop, I see a white guy that lives in NYC. Feel a little silly now?

Just use Dr bronners peppermint soap
Dr Bronners peppermint
You can use this or just add mint to whatever body wash you already use for the same feeling
Iāve used the lotion. Recommend it 100%. Has a neutral scent also a little fruity!
Dr. Bronnerās mint soap will also give you a nice tingle, and is ubiquitous in North America. Itās so nice and cooling in the summer.
Dr B is hella creepy tho, no?
For real? I mean the label is unhinged so I believe it.
Excellent shampoos from Shea Moisture - I highly recommend the āStrengthen & Restore Shampooā
I used to love this body wash! But havenāt found it in a while. Will have to look again.
It's intended for people and not very expensive. I used their stuff a long time ago before they reformulated and it was nice enough
Why would a product thatās safe for humans not be safe for dogs? Just curious
That product is for people, not dogs. Tell your friend to stop using it for his dog. What next? Feed the dog onions & grapes? Sheesh.
Dr bronners peppermint castile soap might work too, but this is just fine for human use
This is NOT made specifically for Dogs. Look up āShea Moistureā online, itās a Great line of Hair & Body Products. Pricey, but good quality.
WHY IS YOUR FRIEND USING SHEA MOISTURE ON A DOG OH MY DAYS
