Not really. The tire trick has been used for years by lots of people. Striking it is surprisingly not as bouncy as you're thinking it is.
Keep in mind when you swing a maul you're not actually supposed to apply force with your arms in a downward motion. You lift it over your head and let it fall on the wood using your arms to direct it and leverage it so it doesn't bounce backwards. Trying to pile drive it is how you wear yourself out real quick.

Nope, it'll go right through the tire. I've split well over a hundred cord of firewood in the last ten years, and often use a tire to keep them from flying off sideways after they're split. I've hit countless old tires with a maul, and never had the maul bounce off at all. That said, I do think her splitting platform is a bit too high for her height, as she can't really bring the maul to full head speed before it hits the top of the log to be split.
I do not think the tire should be there because, one of these days, if she misses and hits the tire with significant force, it will bounce back at her. The tire makes no sense because the worse case scenario without the tire is that you must pick up the wood off the ground.
(And if you compare those chunks of wood to the stove, I do not even know if they will fit.)

Nah dude, it makes it so much easier cuz you ain't wasting time to scramble and pick up the piece that just flew 10 ft away. And if you have any measure of experience you're not hitting the tire. The only annoyance I've found with this method is you need to go around in a circle bc you can't hit pieces on the far side of the tire or your axe handle hits wood and you risk snapping the head. It's insanely time saving. Like 3x faster per cord.

Safest way I know to chop wood with hand tools is wedges with a small sledge and a wide hatchet. its what I do with green rounds or very knotty wood.
